Atarienis
Welcome to Atarienis, a watery haven of peace and... well, fish. The people of Atarienis are primarily merfolk, though they have never turned away any other water-dwelling species. The most common visitors are water nymphs (naiads) and selkies. Demigods and naga will occasionally show up as well, though they are relatively uncommon. Shifters are most uncommon, but that's mainly because many marine shifters only show up to sell their wares to the folks under the waves. It is most rare that a shifter stays in Atarienis, but they are highly respected if they do.
The people of Atarienis, though underwater, have a very rich farm-life. They use
ophiotaurus and manatees like humans use oxen, and they use kelpies and hippocampi like humans use horses. In Atarienis, kelpies only take the form of horses, and not humans, as stated in the traditional lore of the creature. Hippocampi may also be winged, though their wings do not give them the power of flight. They are purely aesthetic wings. Of course, ophiotaurus and manatees cannot breed, just as kelpies and hippocampi cannot breed, but it doesn't matter much to the Atariens. These animals serve their purpose, even if they aren't used to make baby animals.
In regards to dogs, cats, and birds, the Atariens have otters, catfish, and flying fish. Otters come in a variety of sizes in Atarienis, as dogs do up in the mortal realm. The Atariens primarily breed
giant otters, though some younger Atariens have been found raising sea otters to be personal companions. Catfish function like cats, though they must be kept away from the giant otters. Giant otters are notorious for eating catfish. Flying fish function like birds, and sometimes are even sent above the waves to scout out potential threats and allies.
Atariens breed Eastern dragons that resemble great turtles that bred with serpents. They are a hardy stock of dragons, though they are quite solitary and only like to be around their handler if they can help it.
Atariens eat fish (small, medium, and large, largest being sharks and the like) and marine flora like seaweed, algae (particularly species of algae that are named after mermaids, like mermaid's wine glass and mermaid's fan), money plants, and turtle grass. Atariens trade their wares for fruits and flowers (which are eaten like fruit), as they can not get those things from their farms alone.
Some common pests for the Atariens are octopi and squid, which are good food for their larger catfish.
