Emberfoot sat next to the camp entrance, staring at the apprentice's den from afar. She watched as all the many mentors, her friends, gathered their apprentices and running out of the clan walls happily discussing what they will be teaching or learning for the day. She watched as apprentices waiting for their mentors played together and rolled in the cold dirt and snow patches. Her heart wrenched with pain knowing that she was so close to having an apprentice... so close to proving she could accomplish what her brothers and sister, to her mother, that she could do things that help the clan. But she couldn't even protect her apprentice the same day she got one... poor Gladepaw didn't deserve it. "It should have been me..." she whispered to herself as her shoulders shook with sorrow and remorse.

Nestled in the heart of a long-forgotten forest, the ever-bare limbs of the bowing trees stand stark against the gray sky. A silent swamp, lilypads and moss covering the surface of the deceptively deep water. A thick layer of fog that never seems to dissipate. The Badlands. Nothing here seems to thrive; a heavy scent of death clings to all, even the clan of feral felines that call it home. Descendants of witches' familiars, all that remains of a coven lost to time centuries ago.

Magic runs through the blood of the cats of the Badlands; or so it is rumored. The spiteful, greedy, isolated felines care little of others, and their effigies crafted of rodent bones ensure no one enters their territory, lest they bring a curse upon themselves.

The cats found in the Badlands are creatures of habit and rituals. Everything they do is done only after heavy consultation with their ancestors, the constellations and the very forest itself. The matriarch, the most in tune with the magicks of the woods, is almost always in heavy meditation, communing with the nature under her paws, deciphering every sign as either a blessing or an omen. Whatever she speaks is regarded as absolute. A litter newly born may be just as quickly discarded if a warrior returns with only a serpent as caught prey.

The hierarchy of the Badlands also functions on rituals. Every coming of age or promotion is regarded as a sacred time and each ritual must be performed perfectly or it is perceived as a poor omen for things to come. The ceremony that sees a cat become a warrior is one of the most important, after their birth. They are to leave the marked territory of their home and venture out into the remains of a collapsed tunnel, where they will meditate in complete darkness and silence; this is where they will learn their true name and their purpose in the clan.

The clan worships two deities, the Spider Queen (associated with all-knowledge, the hunt, and success) and the Serpent Tyrant (associated with mischief, deceit, death, and failure). The Spider Queen is believed to have once been the familiar of the most powerful witch and was, in turn, just as powerful. She is believed to have been able to take the form of any animal. Any cat born blind is smiled upon as the Spider Queen was known to use her power to see without true sight; black fur is also regarded as a blessing. The Serpent Tyrant is not so much worshiped as he is loathed and acknowledged by the clan. He is believed to have been a child of the forest who deceived and murdered the Spider Queen; many cats of the clan also believe he still resides in the forest and some claim it is his voice they hear during their warrior ceremony. His rituals are forbidden and dangerous as they require the sacrifice of another cat; these rituals are oft performed to ensure the failure of an enemy. White pelts accompanied by green eyes are considered bad luck as they are associated with the Serpent Tyrant.

The hushed chirps of the crickets and morning birds may have fallen on deaf ears, but every haphazard note sung by the creatures of the forest was analyzed by the young felid who sat, motionless, among the dead leaves. Behind her, her tail flicked thoughtfully, mirroring her concentration. The sun had risen and it had fallen, and the stars now dappled the twilight sky, but time was lost on Wolfsbane.

"Speak to me, Spider Queen."

No answer. The crickets and the sparrows continued their singing. She was not deterred. Wolfsbane remained sitting, listening, taking in the earth under her paws and the cool damp air against her whiskers. There would be a sign, she could feel it pulsing through her like her own heartbeat.

The foliage around her rustled. Pale blue eyes darted open, jolting to the brush beside her. A tiny mouse, half of it's body out of the shrub, looking as though it knew it had been spotted, its little ribcage heaving with hurried breaths. It fled, disappearing under the brush once more, running back in the direction it had just come. Wolfsbane wasted no time in chasing.

It was late afternoon when Weaselstar heard the tell tale call of the crow. His ears shot up and his head lifted from his paws. He jumped down from his ledge and hurried out of his den. As he rounded the corner of his building and was met with two cats on either side of the headstone. The leader’s whiskers twitched in amusement. The bird must have taken a liking to whoever’s grave that was, as it was resting in the same position as when he had been led to the camp. The two cat’s gaze shifted from each other to Weaselstar. The tom straightened his back and stood proudly. He took a few steps forward until he got close enough to be heard. “Welcome,” He meowed firmly “My name is Weaselstar, leader of RavenClan. I trust that one of you is the shaman I asked the spirits for?” The crow chirped hopping closer to the ginger tom, picking a small piece of leaf from his ear fur. The tom flicked the ear and took a bold step forward. “My name is Droserathorn.” He bowed his head in greeting “I’m sorry for the delay, but I came from the other side of the two-leg territory and it took a few days to cross it.” Weaselstar smiled warmly at the new shaman. He turned his head to face the brown she-cat that came with him. “And you are?” He meowed amiably, but cautious. The she-cat swallowed and looked at the ginger tom. Droserathorn nodded with a smile. “My name is Kitewhisker. I met Droserathorn in the city.” She introduced “He told me that he was going to join a group of cats and I asked him if I could tag along.” She paused and looked over Weaselstar’s shoulder “Though, I don’t see many other cats.” Weaselstar shuffled his paws and looked at the stone floor sheepishly. “Yes, well, sorry to disappoint, but you two are technically the first members of RavenClan.” Droserathorn raised an eyebrow. “Really?” he meowed, his curious expression soon turned into one of excitement “That’s awesome! Gives me time to build up a medicine supply before someone gets injured.” He nodded respectfully to the crow and the bird flapped away. The shaman joined his leader on the platform. “So the bird told me that you have assigned dens for us?” Weaselstar blinked in surprise. How did it know? And, more importantly, how did it communicate with Droserathorn? He shook his head subtly and then smiled at the shaman. “Yes, I have.” He confirmed “Follow me, I’ll give you two a tour of camp.” Kitewhisker smiled and hopped up on the platform, following her new leader to the first building.

As the sun set, the cats dispersed, going to their separate dens. Droserathorn had been very grateful for his section of Weaselstar’s building. The shaman had bounced around like a small kit, examining each section of carved out wall to determine which herb would go where. He decided that the small room off of the main den would be his storage, and the den will remain reserved for nesting any sick cats. Weaselstar figured he should make sure Kitewhisker had made herself a good nest before heading to his own. He stepped out into the moonlight and crossed the clearing swiftly. He cleared his throat before entering, so he didn’t scare the jumpy she-cat. Kitewhisker turned to see who was at the entrance and smiled through a bundle of moss. She had chosen the middle cave on the second of three levels. Weaselstar entered and made his way over to the right wall. She paused for a moment and laid down in her new sleeping area. “Hey.” The leader purred “Just checking in on your progress.” Kitewhisker sighed with a small laugh. “Yea, thanks. I had a bit of trouble at first, but I think I’ve got the weaving process down!” Weaselstar tilted his head. “Weaving?” He pondered. The warrior nodded and moved over so the leader could stand beside her. He bunched his muscles and jumped into the cave. He examined the nest. Kitewhisker lifted a paw and touched the nest. “See? I got reeds from the riverbed and wove them into a little bowl.” She explained. Flattening the moss that cushioned the reed nest, she stepped into her spot, curling up and tucking in her paws. The nest was the perfect size and she fit snugly into the shape. Weaselstar smiled and nodded in approval. “I’m impressed!” He purred “You’ll have to teach the rest of the cats who join. It looks very sturdy.” He pressed his paw against the hardened outside, confirming his observation. She blushed and shrugged. “Just a little trick I learned during my time on the streets.” She meowed softly. Weaselstar blinked. “We should exchange stories tomorrow, but for now, get some rest. We have a lot to do in the morning.” He meowed. Leaping down from the ledge, he nodded a farewell to the warrior and retreated to his own den.

Blazing Fate looked up at the stars peeking from the canopies above him, feeling the cooling breeze whisper in his ear as it ruffles his fur and beckons him forward, his eyes shutting, a soft sigh leaving his jaws before he finally heeded nature's command and sat, tail stilling. He focused his senses on the whispers in his ears and spoke to them in a soft whisper, any other cat watching him would have thought he had been driven mad with the new-found leadership responsibilities, but this was simply his faith in his ancestors. Finally, the forest was silent, and he and The Fates had struck a deal, a compromise if you will, and he learned his night would not end after this wishing.

Blazing Fate then rose to his paws as the wind ceased completely, before he started trotting back on his path, tail held high, pride flowing through his veins as he re-scented his borders and rubbed his frame along the trees, soft purrs rumbling in his throat before his stomach decided to join in the noise, and his ears flattened. He looked down at his paws and flexed his claws slowly, before a sharp hiss of annoyance left his mouth, turning tail and stalking back into his forest to hunt.

"You don't seem to understand the situation, Raptorstar." Starry eyes stared at him, not blinking. Not that Raptorstar really expected them to; they were dead, after all. Despite the scolding he was getting, he could only resist the temptation to roll his eyes. This discussion was pointless.

"I understand that you're frustrated with me," the leader responded, keeping his gaze locked on his ancestor's. He wasn't going to look away and let her know she was above him. Never. "But I am doing the best with what I have been given."

"Ignoring a beehive that could harm your clan, ignoring your deputy, appointing a cat your hardly know another leadership position! On top of all that, you still have not found your second leader. We will take away your lives and leave you with no support if you do not do what we have asked of you in two moons. That is all we will give you."

Raptorstar dipped his head, barely repressing the retort that grew in his mouth before he was able to fade away, back to the real world.

It was all so stupid. His clan was growing, yet Starclan only saw that he was barely sustaining his clan, despite it being Leafbare. New cats joined every moon, yet Starclan only noticed that not the right cat joined, that he still hadn't found another leader. He was surviving in a world that told these cats they shouldn't be, and yet Starclan could offer no praise. Raptorstar was still fuming when Fallencrow padded up to Raptor's monster, scuffing a pebble on the ground to let the leader know he was there.

"Enter," Raptorstar growled, trying and failing to keep his temper down. Fallencrow was used to it, paying the tone no mind.

"We found a young cat on the border, Raptorstar," the soldier said, dutifully giving his report. "Longbranch and I were exploring and found her. I think she'd be a great addition."

Raptorstar twitched his ear, peering out of the window of his den. The she-cat waiting outside, ears alert as she gazed around the abandoned monster highway that Chaosclan called home. "How young is young?" He asked, a bit disgruntled at just how small the cat looked.

Fallencrow tilted his head, thinking. "Probably six moons."

Whatever. It wasn't like they needed to turn her away. She looked capable. "I'll take her on as my apprentice and let her stay if she isn't afraid of me," Raptorstar said, jumping off the seat of the monster and stalking outside, shaking off his pelt to get rid of the lingering anger he had towards Starclan.

Raptorstar kept a brisk pace as he made it to the young cat, though she didn't flinch as he approached, only appraising him with her eyes. She didn't betray any hint of fear. "What is your name?" Raptorstar grumbled, upset that he hadn't gotten a reaction out of her. He could have blew off a bit more steam if he had been able to get the satisfaction of scaring her. Curse this new world, hardening cats' personalities.

"I don't have one," she stated, looking into Raptorstar's good eye. "But I would like to join your clan, and receive one, if you would have me."

"Whatever," Raptorstar grunted, looking at Fallencrow beside him. "You will be known as Crowpaw. If you're expecting a proper introduction to the clan, you aren't getting one. Figure it out yourself. You'll be my apprentice, and I expect you to be ready to train as the sun is rising."

The frazzled leader turned back to his monster, leaving Fallencrow and Crowpaw to deal with each other. Maybe Starclan was right. He was falling apart as the only leader, unsure of what to do, only pushing off anger towards other cats.

The world feels at peace. It has slowed down. Man seemed to never stop, always striving towards something original, something extra. Animals however, know how to enjoy the little things and be content with their lives. The days became brighter with the sun rays shining off the deep, blue waters that covered the old, grey streets. The nights, darker, but more beautiful as street lights and smog no longer block the stars.
A large proportion of the planet has been flooded, reducing human population to a minimum. With increased vigour flora started to overtake the concrete lands and ruined buildings, creating new habitats for the fauna, which is quickly adjusting to this modern reality.
