sunkit squealed as cloverkit toppled her over, slamming her into the soft moss bedding. “come on, then!” cloverkit mewed, tail flicking teasingly. “you try!”

“oh, i’ll try alright!” sunkit boasted, watching her sister with narrowed eyes. she dove for cloverkit’s legs, knocking the she-kit over on her side. the nursery silence was interrupted by cloverkit’s dramatic sobs.

“that wasn’t fair!” she bit back, stomping back to their nest. sunkit rolled her eyes as she followed her sister.

“oh, you can’t just give up now, cloverkit!” but cloverkit was already giving her sister the silent treatment as she curled up into a ball. sunkit sighed with annoyance as she left cloverkit on her own. there were more important things to be done this afternoon, like bringing back some lunch!

sunkit made her way out of the nursery. the scent of warm squirrel lead her to the fresh-kill pile, where she was nearly smashed by an incoming mapleheart. her muffled squeaks were the only indicator to mapleheart that he had done something wrong. “ah, geez! sorry, sunkit.” the large ginger tom mewed his apology, chuckling awkwardly. his gaze momentarily focused on the nursery, wondering if willowtail would come out to scold the young warrior.

“oh, that’s fine.” sunkit laughed, pawing at his foreleg. “i’m going to get something for me and cloverkit!” she told him confidently, a yellowing grin apparent on the she-kit’s muzzle.

mapleheart smiled kindly back. “is your mother out?” he asked, confused as to why the young kit would have to run food herself. she shook her head, telling him about her daily nap. “oh, i wish i could indulge like she can.” he chuckled, leaning over to snag the tail of a mouse. “well, see you!” he sauntered off towards the river, carefully maneuvering over the rocks. sunkit watched him leave with a disappointed expression. she would’ve followed him, but willowtail told her that she and cloverkit had to stay in the front of the camp. sunkit slunked back towards the nursery, dragging a squirrel beside her.

Leafbare has come to a close and snow has begun to melt. Rain is more common which may lead to floods in water-based or low-lying territories. Prey is only just beginning to return although kittings will run smoother and the chances of queens or kits dying during birth will begin to drop. Loners, too, are beginning to explore clan territories which makes the odds of finding new cats higher than it otherwise would be.

This Moon
Lemonstar tucked her tail under her paws, wrinkling her nose as she gazed out from her den. She flattened her ears as a trickle of water ran down her muzzle and got to her feet. Foggyprance was just emerging from the warriors' den, closely followed by a whining Sedgewatcher: Lemonstar noted the fur around his paws was spiky and wet. She guessed that den must have leaked a little. Foggyprance ignored the rain, and she decided he had it better off than both her and Sedgewatcher, his fur was short! But he seemed to be doing well, and called into the warriors' den.

"Littledusk! Berrytoes, Lightningpelt and Dappledhowl! You'll be coming with me on a border patrol." The named warriors emerged from the den slowly, but Lemonstar smiled with a laugh as she saw they were all short-furred, Foggyprance must be planning to visit the river border. Rain always fell harder there. Lightningpelt bounced around eagerly, her bright ginger fur barely moving as she ran about. Berrytoes was less enthusiastic, sending a longing gaze towards the nursery. Lemonstar thought they must be wanting to spend time with their mate, Koipuddle - he was just about a moon away from kitting now. But they turned to face Foggyprance again and dipped their head with a pleasant smile. "Good morning."

Dappledhowl yawned sleepily, turning to her Clanmate. The rosetted she-cat had blended nicely into the Clan, as though there was a space she'd always belonged. "So, Berrytoes. What pronouns are you using today?" Berrytoes sent her a grateful look, Dappledhowl had quickly become one of the warriors' most helpful friends. "They or them, thanks for asking." Littledusk followed, flanked by his mate Patchedslip, who Foggyprance pounced upon. "You'll be in a hunting patrol! Crowcloud can lead it, fetch him." Patchedslip nodded and turned back to the den. "Crowcloud! Wake up, we're on hunting."

As the fluffy black tom emerged from the den, Lemonstar noticed with surprise that both Heatherpelt and Goldenwing had approached Foggyprance from behind. Heatherpelt was practically dragging her denmate by the scruff, and Lemonstar wondered with alarm if Briarkit had done something more to their child. She peered anxiously over at the nursery, but saw with relief both Moorkit and Briarkit sitting in the entrance. Almost as though they were friends! And Heatherpelt's quiet voice wafted towards her. "Goldenwing and I would like to join a patrol," she said firmly. Goldenwing flinched at the idea: Lemonstar assumed moons of pampered nursery life in her old Clan must have spoilt the pretty golden molly.

"Are you sure-" Foggyprance began, only to break off as Goldenwing shook her head fiercely and Heatherpelt shot him 'a look'. "O-kay, you can go with Crowcloud." Heatherpelt nodded stiffly and padded along to join the tom and Patchedslip. Moorkit scampered out of the nursery, eyes wide with excitement. "I wanna come!" they squealed. Goldenwing's look of shock and horror kept Briarkit back by the nursery entrance, where Almondpaws came to sit beside her: Lemonstar felt a pang of pain for the tortie kit, despite being spoilt by her parents, being overprotected was never fun. "No, honey," Heatherpelt soothed. "Go and play with Briarkit, okay? I bet she's feeling lonely."

Moorkit sighed and ran off, their short tail streaming out behind them. "Hi, Briarkit! What do you think your warrior name will be?" they asked her happily, settling down between Almondpaws' feet. "We aren't even apprentices yet," Briarkit giggled. "Maybe... Briarwing? Like Momma!" Lemonstar smiled at the duo, glad they were making friends. She wouldn't want Briarkit to be left out- Moorkit was loved by the Clan, but Briarkit and her parents were still settling in from their over-the-top lifestyle before.

"Maplepaw will come with me on the border patrol," Foggyprance continued. "Hawkwhisker can bring Otterpaw on the hunting patrol, and Barkskip, Sedgewatcher; can you take Fernpaw and Spiderpaw to gather materials?" Sedgewatcher nodded, and after rousing Barkskip he headed to get up Spiderpaw. Barkskip followed, and Fernpaw soon emerged from the den. Maplepaw huffed grouchily as she crawled out of the den, eyes sticky with sleep. Foggyprance bustled his patrol out of camp, followed by Crowcloud's patrol and a few moments later Barkskip's.

Tansykit waggled his hindquarters, prancing towards his sister. He lashed his tail, bushing it out with a sharp intake of beath. "Look out!" the sandy-coloured kit yelled a heartbeat before his paws made contact. Daisykit awoke with a start, her crooked jaw curving into a smile. "Tansykit!" she squealed, hurling herself on him. Tansykit threw himself away with a giggle, rolling into Deertumble. The ginger-and-white queen pawed at her kits, dragging them away from the exit of the den. "Come on, now, children. Don't mess about." Tansykit whined, "But we wanna go and explore!"

"Yeah, can't we?" Myrtlekit asked suddenly, sitting up from where Deertumble had been coaxing him to get to sleep. His tail twitched excitedly, and he peered out of the den. "Look! I see a grey cat.. n' a great fat one next t' him.." Deertumble flushed for her kits benefit at Tansykit and Daisykit crowded around their brother, squealing and scrambling. "Fine. Go and explore." With shrieks of delight, the three hyperactive kittens poured out of the nursery. "There's the great fat cat!" Myrtlekit yelled, rocketing towards Sedgewatcher and Foggyprance.

"Hi," Daisykit mewed, peering up at the deputy and his fluffy mate. Foggyprance narrowed his eyes, irritated. "Yes?" he asked calmly. Sedgewatcher made a kind of grunting noise, a clump of moss dangling from his maw and obscuring his ability to speak. Tansykit and Myrtlekit circled Barkskip's small patrol, Foggyprance had obviously come to meet them. "Who're you?" Myrtlekit demanded, looking up at the slim, grey-and-white molly standing next to Spiderpaw. She flushed anxiously, peering at her denmate for translation. Fernpaw always took a little longer than other cats to get used to new accents, and ThicketClan was full of accents. Even Spiderpaw's and his siblings' were hard to decipher at times. Myrtlekit blinked impatiently, his short tail fluffy up in irritation. "Hellooo?"

Spiderpaw stiffened in annoyance, glancing over the kit's heads to where Almondpaws and Junipermuzzle lay grooming each others' fur in the warm sun. Their tails gently rested on their bellies, and Spiderpaw wondered with a sigh how anyone could want to have kits. "She can't understand you: it's the accents," he explained with minimal snappiness. "Her name is Fernpaw." Fernpaw nodded enthusiastically, adding, "What're your names?"

"I'm Myrtlekit," the ginger tom announced. "That's my brother Tansykit, and the one with her tongue sticking out is Daisykit, my sister." Daisykit felt her ear tips heat at the description; even her brothers didn't always understand her crooked jaw. But she swallowed, determined to prove herself to their new Clan. "You don't have to talk for everyone, Myrtlekit!" she exclaimed, pouncing on her brother's tail.

Fernpaw's face melted as the three kits entered into a scuffle, and she murmured to Spiderpaw, "They're adorable!" Spiderpaw rolled his eyes and nudged his friend along. "Go see how Twigpaw is.. Junipermuzzle's due anytime, so Sparkgaze'll be busy: Twigpaw's probably feeling bored." Fernpaw shot a longing glance at the kits but nodded and turned towards the medicine den. Tansykit waved his tail at Fernpaw, "Adiós!" he called, and Daisykit and Myrtlekit scrambled off their brother. The two chorused their own "adiós"s. Fernpaw blinked anxiously and waved her own tail in goodbye, assuming that was what the cute little kits were saying.

Daisykit and Myrtlekit then yawned in unison, turning to Tansykit sleepily. Their brother nodded and began to trot towards the nursery. Deertumble arched her tail over the three kits and tucked them over her flank. Myrtlekit wheezed in annoyance and squeezed out of his mother's grasp. Instead, he curled up over her ginger and white paws. He squeezed his eyes shut tight. Daisykit settled in the curve of Deertumble's belly and sneezed once, twice before curling tighter to sleep. Tansykit draped himself over the queen's tail and fell asleep first.

"Duerme bien, chiquitos," Deertumble purred in her Spanish accent, nestling her nose in her paws. She closed her eyes gently, ears flicking sleepily. Soon the four cat family was fast asleep, Tansykit snoring heavily.

But it seemed like only a minute or so before Daisykit was shaken awake again. Deertumble pawed her hard, and she forced her heavy eyelids open to see her two ginger brothers half-hidden behind their mother's legs. "Junipermuzzle's kitting: get outside, quick!" Deertumble meowed sharply. Behind Daisykit, Sparkgaze's scent stormed the den: a mess of herbs and rainwater. Junipermuzzle shivered in the medicine cat's paws, and Daisykit charged out of the den. Tansykit and Myrtlekit came pelting after, and Deertumble followed. "C'mon, let's get something to eat," she purred. "Can we get something for Junipermuzzle's new kits, too?" Myrtlekit begged. Deertumble stifled an amused purr, and shook her head. "No, they won't be able to eat prey for a few moons yet. Get something for Junipermuzzle herself."

Junipermuzzle whimpered as the spasms stopped and she began to relax. Almondpaws curled around the queen and licked her ear as Sparkgaze nosed the kits. Junipermuzzle straightened shakily and stretched her neck towards the medicine cat. "I want to see them," she whispered. Sparkgaze turned and placed one kit at her belly. "One tom." Junipermuzzle licked the kit's fur gently and Almondpaws watched Sparkgaze. "Any more?" Sparkgaze showed them the kit's limp form, her gaze shadowed. "She was born weak. I'm afraid she hunts with StarClan now."

"But- but kits can't hunt!" Junipermuzzle squeaked out. Almondpaws pressed against her mate and focused on the living kit. "Let's name him," she purred. "And the other one," Junipermuzzle demanded. She rolled the kit's corpse to her side so it could nuzzle its brother. Almondpaws padded round to examine the two kits as Sparkgaze exited the den, her eyes flicking to Junipermuzzle's own eyes glowing in the dark. "That's what we'll name him," she said simply, nudging the tom. "Glowingkit." Junipermuzzle nodded and recalled the bird calls she'd heard that morning, "Can we call this one Birdkit?" Almondpaws' face softened and nodded, "Of course. Perfect."

Glowingkit stretched his tiny paws and pushed at Junipermuzzle's belly, yawning sleepily. She curled her bristly tail around the kitten and flicked her ears towards their dead kit. Almondpaws nodded wordlessly and carried the corpse into the clearing. Her eyelids were heavy with grief and across the camp, Deertumble's own green eyes widened with shock at the still tortoishell body. Her kits were collapsed in a heap, scraps of mouse dangling from their maws, but she pushed them up and forced them to sit and bow their heads. Sparkgaze and Twigpaw watched silently from their den, Fernpaw curling her tail up at the scent of death that sifted through her scent glands. Almondpaws laid the kit's still form in the hollow sandy middle of the camp.

Foggyprance and Sedgewatcher watched in horror as the Clan gathered around the kit's carcass. They joined their clanmates sitting by Birdkit and Junipermuzzle sat next to Almondpaws, their newborn kit settled between them, mouth wide opened in a yawn. Moorkit and Briarkit sat with their heads ducked, Heatherpelt and Goldenwing silently sweeping their tongues over each of their kits' ears. Tansykit and Myrtlekit curled around Deertumble's paws; eyes down and Daisykit draped herself over her mother's fluffy tail, ears flat. Maplepaw bit her lip, eyes flicking towards her brothers. Otterpaw and Spiderpaw curled their tails tight around their flank, Patchedslip and Littledusk pressed closed together as well.

Almondpaws and Junipermuzzle pressed their muzzle to the kit's body, sitting vigil for the poor thing. Slowly the rest of the Clan began to disperse, padding to their respective dens for bedtime. Foggyprance rounded up Lemonstar and explained that they were leading a patrol to drive out the badger. Maplepaw approached the leader and her deputy, head bowed. "Can - Can I come?" she begged. Lemonstar began to shake her head but Foggyprance opened his maw to jump in with, "I think she could come. She's close enough to being a warrior." Maplepaw pricked her ears and Lemonstar asked her, "Why do you want to go?" Inhaling, Maplepaw explained, "I want to get my mind of the dead kit.. I don't like the thought. If I ever have kits what if one of them dies? I won't be able to stand that." She closed her eyes for a moment then added, "The vigor of a battle will take my mind of it."

Lemonstar nodded. "Fine. You may come." Foggyprance signalled to Crowcloud, who was watching Dappledhowl across the camp. The black warrior bounded towards his fellow tom and Dappledhowl followed as Lemonstar called for her. The two cats cocked their heads at Lemonstar, who began to lead them out of camp. "We're going to hunt down the badger Barkskip scented," she told them. Maplepaw hung at the back, tail lashing excitedly. Dappledhowl shot her a look but decided to believe in Foggyprance's judgement. Crowblaze was not so wise and spoke up. "Why is an apprentice coming?"

"I said she could," Lemonstar said firmly. They'd reached the edge of the badger's so-called 'territory', and Crowblaze bounded towards the den. Dappledhowl scrambled after him, squeaking out a "Be careful!" Maplepaw followed more cautiously, and Lemonstar crouched next to Foggyprance, ready to charge into battle. A rumbling growl startled the patrol and Maplepaw spun around. A hulking beast of a badger lurked in the forest, green eyes glaring at them.

Crowblaze's matching green gaze smouldered like chips of melting glass. He tensed his hind legs and flew over the patrol, landing with a huff on the badger's huge shoulders. Dappledhowl clamped her jaw shut, refusing to call out to her friend. Instead, she wove behind the badger and, as it began to shake Crowblaze off, slashed its flank with unsheathed paws. As it hollered, she slid underneath the badger and lashed its hind legs as well. It crumpled for a moment, allowing Crowblaze to leap off, and Maplepaw braced her hind paws to dive at the badger. She clawed its ear, and Foggyprance followed, pushing her away into safety and slicing its side. Crowblaze let out a screech of pain, and Lemonstar's green eyes widened as the badger shook the black warrior to and fro.

She spun back around and went for it, but Foggyprance was faster and slipped in between its slashing claws. He winced slightly as they hit his back but he whapped the badger's muzzle with two flailing paws. Crowblaze fell with a thump to the ground and Dappledhowl dragged him aside, as Lemonstar skidded through and nipped the badger's hind legs.

It fled from the patrol, lips drawn back in a snarl. Maplepaw came pounding through the bracken, and yowled: "Don't kill her! She's a mother!" Lemonstar circled the distraught apprentice, and soothed her with a calming purr, "We didn't. She'll move her cubs someplace else." Maplepaw licked her chest self-consciously, and Foggyprance interrupted the two with an alarmed mew. "Crowblaze's injured! We need to get him back to Sparkgaze."

Lemonstar turned to Dappledhowl, who was beside Crowblaze. The warrior was leaning heavily on his denmate, blood trickling down from a nasty shoulder gash. Foggyprance also had partly dried blood caking parts of his short fur. Lemonstar had a scratch on her flank and a couple more along her back. Maplepaw followed the rest of the patrol back home, every fur on her pelt prickling with nerves.

"What. Happened?!" Sparkgaze demanded, staring at the blood pooling inbetween Crowblaze's paws. Dappledhowl's blue-green eyes were filled with anxiety for the tom, but she said: "We took a patrol to hunt down that badger. Lemonstar and Foggyprance are injured too." Sparkgaze squinted in irritation and spun round. "Twigpaw! Wake up!" The apprentice rolled onto her back and yawned, blinking her eyes open. "Wha...?" "Fetch horsetail," her mentor ordered. Twigpaw nodded sleepily and snatched up the bundle of herbs, still mostly fresh.

Sparkgaze snapped them up and began to chew them into a poultice as Twigpaw circled the patrol to check no one else was injured. Maplepaw flexed her claws, green eyes dull with anxiety, and Twigpaw scent her straight to bed. "No more patrols for you today!" Dappledhowl stepped away as Twigpaw approached her. "I'm not leaving him. He's injured." The apprentice ducked her head in acceptance and backed away, escorting Lemonstar to her den. "You'll be fine, just a bit of rest." "And Foggyprance?" Lemonstar demanded, fluffy tail whisking over the grass.

"He's just got a bit of blood, only Crowblaze is really at risk: shoulder wounds have to be looked after because they're on a joint: it might get infected though." Lemonstar nodded and entered her den, angling her tail in a good night to Twigpaw. Twigpaw's amber optics darted to the shadowy regions of the den, where Heatherpelt crouched, Moorkit snoring softly by her side. She'd been waiting for the patrol to get back out of worry for her mate. Twigpaw padded away as shuffling noises came from within the den and whispered sweet murmurings met her ears. The soft rasp of Heatherpelt's tongue soothing her leader's scratches followed her across the camp as she approached her mentor. Sparkgaze was just dismissing Foggyprance with a "Take it easy, but feel free to patrol."

"I'm worried about them," she said abruptly as Twigpaw settled down beside her. "Who?" the apprentice asked. "Hawkwhisker and Goldenwing." Sparkgaze flicked her tail towards the couple, still seated with their heads bowed next to Junipermuzzle and Almondpaws' kit's body. Glowingkit was huddled by Briarkit, both fast asleep. But Hawkwhisker sat stiffly beside his mate, who's golden body was hunched over. Twigpaw tilted her head, confused. "Why are they there? It's not their kit who died." Sparkgaze sighed. "I have no idea. But I'm sending them to bed, especially the poor kits." Twigpaw watched, eyes half-closed with exhaustion, as her mentor padded towards the two families. She eventually turned away and stumbled into the medicine den. Crowblaze was in the nearest nest, Twigpaw realised with irritation it was her mentor's. Didn't patients know that they had half the den and Sparkgaze had the other? And Dappledhowl was there too, fast asleep next to the injured warrior. Twigpaw left the medicine den and scrambled onto her nest in the apprentices' den.

"Why are you still sitting vigil for her?" Sparkgaze asked gently, stopping by the small vigil party. Junipermuzzle and Almondpaw's looked up, eyes blurred with sleep, Glowingkit mewling gently in his sleep and pawing at his mothers' paws. "Get your kit to bed," Sparkgaze snapped, placing a paw on the tortie kitten's fur. It was chilly, and Almondpaws picked him up by the scruff. Junipermuzzle led her mate and kit to the nursery, but Goldenwing stubbornly refused to move. "We can't let the kit pass to the Sky alone," she insisted. Sparkgaze ducked her head to lift the still kit's body. "Her spirit won't pass on until we bury her tomorrow morning." Goldenwing screwed up her face and pinned her ears back. "But Maplekit didn't," she whispered.

"Maplekit?" Sparkgaze whispered, placing the kit's corpse down again. Hawkwhisker's own whiskers twitched. "Our kit. He was stillborn." Goldenwing swallowed hard. "I've never seen his spirit. I don't know if he made it," she whimpered. Sparkgaze's crystal blue gaze softened with sympathy. "I'm sorry. I never knew but I do know one thing. He made it." The queen's eyes lit up with hope as Hawkwhisker shook Briarkit awake. "Have you seen her?" Goldenwing demanded. Sparkgaze bowed her head. "Not personally." Goldenwing closed her eyes with a miserable whine. "But I can! I will!" Hawkwhisker gazed seriously at the medicine cat. "You have to promise. I already let her down. I won't let you do it as well." Sparkgaze nodded. "I promise I'll try to contact your deceased kit, Maplekit, if you take Briarkit and go to sleep now."

Hawkwhisker and Goldenwing decided that was good enough and carried Briarkit into the nursery. Sparkgaze soon picked up Hawkwhisker's defined snoring, probably waking up Glowingkit. "Goodnight," she meowed, breaking off in a yawn. Stretching each of her legs, she headed into the den and was soon snoozing beside her apprentice.

Maplepaw rolled in her nest, unable to sleep. Everything had gone wrong. A beautiful moment - the birthing of new blood - had turned into a premature death. She closed her eyes and tried to fall into a slumber. But Otterpaw's bizarre sleep talking was making it worse. Her brother had even been recorded to arise and sleep walk! She rolled onto her side and twitched her tail tip miserably. Kits. Kittens. Mates. Children. She squished her eyes tighter shut and tried to block the days events out of her rambling mind.

Then there was the badger. The mother badger. Had she got out of the territory with her babies? Had her clanmates injured her too much? Would she die and leave her cubs to fend for themselves? Maplepaw sighed to herself. If she had kits would they die? What if- what if she died? She jerked upwards at a movement from beside her. Otterpaw had straightened up and was walking smoothly out of the den.

Maplepaw groaned inwardly as other denmates began to stretch and awaken. Twigpaw's jaws gaped wide in a yawn. "Is he okay?" she mewed, far too loudly. "Aye, I'll follow him," Maplepaw muttered. She crept after her littermate, who had paused by the fresh kill pile. Otterpaw stumbled out of Camp, eyes wide and staring. He stopped at the crest of a hill, grass stems crawling over his spotted pelt. Maplepaw herself crawled to the edge and sat next to her brother, head bowed. The tom's eyes were glazed in sleep.

Closing her own green orbs, she felt her heart clench. This was it. The world was ending. It'd been one of the worst days of her life and now she'd have to follow Otterpaw around the territory for half the night. She had just curled her tail like a baby fern curled up, sinking further into her existential fears, when a voice shocked her out of the nauseous feeling. "Maplepaw!" Otterpaw exclaimed. "Hasn't it been a wonderful night? I feel so refreshed!!"

Maplepaw whipped her tail around her optics in disbelief. Naturally Otterpaw was on one of his post sleep walking highs. "No," she choked out. "It's been an awful night." Otterpaw looked at her. "Why? I'm having a wonderful time!" Maplepaw felt herself flush angrily. "I just feel so terrible. Birdkit died seconds after birth, I don't want to die and leave my Kits, I don't want my future kits to die, and the badger had cubs!" she wailed. Otterpaw sprang up and aimed a scornful glare at his sister. "Blah, Blah, blah. You're boring, Maplepaw! I'm gonna go have fun!"

"Well- well serves you right," Maplepaw sobbed. Otterpaw dissappeared over the hill and she hunched over, eyes prickling with tears. Her ears pinned back, she wept freely and heavily until two soft voices interrupted her crying. "Maplepaw," the first one whispered. "Please, don't be sad," the second one murmured in her ear. Maplepaw tensed anxiously and snapped her head up. "Wh- who is it?"

"My name is Maplekit," the second, warmer voice purred. "I am Birdkit," the first, crisper and matter of fact mew added. "But I'm Maplepaw," she meowed. "And Birdkit' s dead!" She blinked her sticky eyes open and gazed around the hill top. "Hello? Come out!" "We are here," the voices chorused just ahead of her. She lifted a paw and rubbed her eyes hard. As she opened them again, Maplepaw observed a shimmering of the air. A tortoishell form began to appear, little and kit-like. Their friend began to take shape as well, a fluffy ginger cat.

"I am Birdkit," the tortie repeated. Maplepaw's eyes widened in amazement. "Are you- are you from the sky?" Maplekit nodded. "Hello," they mewed, stars glimmering at their paws. "Can I- can I tell Fernpaw and Twigpaw 'bout this?" Maplepaw gasped, fluffy ears flicking. "Of course." Maplepaw paused. "Please do address me as they however and Birdkit here uses he." Birdkit nodded quickly. "Why are you here?" Maplepaw asked. "To tell you not to be afraid. You don't have to have kits and if you do? Have confidence in yourself and what you can do. Find love on your own, don't force it. We'll always watch you."

Last Moon

Frostfur gives a small grumble as she awakens, shimmying a little bit closer to Bearfang in her drowsy morning haze, only to scrunch up her nose and blink open her eyes at the lack of a figure next to her. Slowly the white molly gets to her feet, looking around the now familiar little den to try and find her friend.

She slowly made her way out into the clearing, and any complaint she had on her tongue died off. She watches for a few moments, taking in how soft the bigger molly looks talking with Minnowpaw. Watches the way her sad looking face gains a bit of a happier look to it as she talks to the apprentice; the way her movements are slow and clearly trusting even when Minnowpaw jumps around and bats at Bearfang every so often while he tells her whatever tale he's spun up this time.

Eventually, Frostfur decides to approach the pair. Minnowpaw lights up at seeing her, and easily changes his little loop to include her in it as she comes over to sit next to Bearfang.

"Oh, Frostfur!! I was just telling Bearfang about the dream I had last night! I was, like, a bird? I don't know what kind, but I was soaring over the camp and ate a bunch of fish!" His excitement makes Frostfur huff out a small laugh, and she knocks her shoulder against Bearfang's. They share a fond look, and then Frostfur gets back to her feet and bats at Minnowpaw's ear the next time he gets close enough.

"Alright, little bird. Since you're so experienced with hunting now thanks to your dream, how about we see how well you do as yourself."

Swanstar makes her way through the bushes on the main shore, picking through to find decent bramble to bring back to the island. When she puts her face into one bush, however, she is startled and stumbles back a few steps.

A little ginger tabby kitten lunges out at her, fur puffed up as it darts forward to bat at her paws playfully. Swanstar goes to say something, when suddenly two other kittens come stumbling out, followed by who she's assuming is the mother.

Swanstar dips her head a bit, doing her best to not seem like she's a threat to her or her kits. She watches out of the corner of her eyes as the molly makes her way closer, the kits all happily heading back to weave their way around her paws.

"Who are you?" the stranger questions quietly, and Swanstar raises her head again to offer her a hopefully trustworthy expression.

"Ah, my name is Swanstar, and you are?"

The molly visibly relaxes at her name, and tilts her head. "You're a Leader of a Clan? Where is it? And, ah. I'm Amberlight, and these are Redkit, Poppykit, and Lionkit. We come from SnowClan, and have traveled a long way to get here." she glances down at her kits, her eyes soft and fond, before looking back up to Swanstar. "If it isn't too much too ask, I'd appreciate it if we could stay. Even just for a few days."

Swanstar gives a small chuckle, her gaze focused mostly on the kits. "I'm the leader of IslandClan, which is located, as the name suggests, on a little island in the middle of the lake just a little ways from here. I'm not sure how good your kits are at swimming, but there is a shallow enough path that it shouldn't be too much of an issue to carry them there, if you're alright with that." she then takes a better look at Amberlight, and gives a small frown.

"Is there, something the matter with your leg?" she questions, and almost regrets it when she sees how Amberlight flinches at the question. When Swanstar is properly paying attention, it's easy to see how the molly doesn't seem to be putting a lot of weight onto one of her back legs. She also had a bit of a limp coming out of the bushes, but Swanstar hadn't paid that much attention at first.

Amberlight ducks her head, looking a bit embarrassed, before admitting "back in SnowClan, I had a nasty slip, and pulled something. It's not broken, or anything like that, just a bit sore to walk on at the moment. I'm sure it's fine." Swanstar hears what's unspoken there. She is fine, but probably won't be good for getting across to the island with her kits.

Swanstar gives a nod, before turning and heading towards the water. "It's just this way, and if you're fine with waiting a little bit, I could get some others to come help with bringing your kits across?" she offers, not waiting for a response before she picks up the bramble she had found before and setting off.

It takes a good while before she gets back to the island, drops off the bramble, and then gets back with Spiderwhisker and Bearfang to help Amberlight bring her kits to the island, but overall they make it there safely, and Swanstar is very thankful for it.

Spiderwhisker hums gently to himself as he shakes off, take a few steps into the woods. He's out here to gather some herbs, and is pretty confident he can find something good around here.

He gives a nod to Bearfang when she also gets out of the water, and watches for a few moments as she heads off to try and hunt in the woods. Swanstar has been gathering fish, but she's sure they're going to need some other kinds of prey, and is secretly grateful for the black molly and her dedication to getting other things to eat.

So, with that in mind, he heads into the bushes just off the shore, hoping to find something useful to stock up on. He knows there's a lot of good herbs that grow near the water, and is hoping to find some good, fresh herbs in the damp soil.

- W E A T H E R -

Newleaf- A queen raises her head, huffing and shaking her head to get rid of the droplets of water that had fallen on her muzzle. She narrowed her eyes and looked up, frowning when she saw some of the branches still had some stubborn ice clinging onto it. With an annoyed grunt, she hauled herself to her paws and stepped over her playing kits as she made her way out of the nursery to report the bits of ice to the Clan deputy. The floods have started to go away, but still seem to be a bit of a problem. The Leafbare ices are still clinging to certain territories but it'll definitely all melt by the time Greenleaf rears its head at the Clans.

Swiftstar welcomed Willowcreek with a warm smile and nudge to the muzzle. "Finally, a Herald for EvergreenClan! I'm been waiting so long to see you." Swiftstar said ecstatically. "Swiftstar, it is an honor to be in your clan. But we must gather food and herbs." Willowcreek was visibly nervous. "Why is that, Willowcreek?" Swfitstar was confused by Willowcreek's sudden turn of disposition. Willowcreek looked away from her leader for a few moments, before saying "Something is coming. I don't know what, but it's coming.".

Swiftstar goes on a patrol and catches food, Willowcreek gathers herbs.

"Thank you for agreeing to walk with me," Pinefeather said, lazily leaning into his mate as Roseclaw smiled, touching his nose to the other tom's forehead. Moonlight streamed down through the trees, turning his mate's dark brown fur into liquid chocolate, cascading over his smooth pelt and making it ripple over strong, agile muscles as they strolled toward the lakeside. Roseclaw gave him a fond smile.
"You don't have to thank me for that," he said, "I wanted to. I always want to. Whenever you're not around, I feel at a loss. Like I've lost some fundamental part of myself and I don't know how to get it back..." Roseclaw stared dramatically into the distance as Pinefeather cackled with laughter, shaking his head good-naturedly.
"You've already won me over, you know," he purred, "all those moons ago, out on the moors, where you'd tell me scary stories all the way out to the secluded locations we went to in order to court one another undisturbed, so that I'd cuddle up to your side by moonlight when I felt afraid."
"In my defense, scary stories were about all Russetwing and I learned," he said with a laugh, "and as I recall, it didn't work out so well for me. You were always more hardy than I was, and I was the one constantly on edge, thinking about my scary stories, while you would plow ahead straight down to the water's edge even after I told you stories about Swansong and her tendency to kidnap those who meandered too close to her domain." Pinefeather purred, snuggling against the taller tom.
"I was only unafraid because I knew you were full of it, all of you," Pinefeather's smile faltered for a little bit, "I didn't know him for very long, but it was clear you all got it from your father." Roseclaw smiled gently, touching his nose to his mate's cheek.
"He would be proud of me, for who I ended up loving. And he would have loved our kits. My mother... well, you knew her. She was stauncher, like Lionheart is now. It would have taken her a while since you were an outsider, but she would have come around. She'd have tolerated less of Eveningpaw's mischief, though." PInefeather laughed, eyes twinkling.
"You know, when he was my apprentice, Midnightstream asked me if I ever felt lonely, not having known my parents, but the truth of the matter is since I never knew them, I never considered them family. And then I always had you- my wonderful knight, who swooped in to give me love, unconditional and sweet. You were every fairytale I could have ever dreamed- a little endearingly awkward, but fiercely loyal, and brave. There were times when I feared we would part on the battlefield, and the next time I saw you would be adorned in lavender, but..."
"I would always come back to you. Nothing could ever stop me."
"I know. I'm half convinced we'll go together, peacefully, in our sleep, because when your heart stops beating, mine will feel it acutely, and it will know to stop beating too, so that we can walk the path to Silverpelt together." Roseclaw's laugh was gentle as he nuzzled against his mate.
"You are a romantic, but this topic is depressing. Lets pick something else."
"Spoil sport," Pinefeather purred, "but I've got one, about a lake monster-"
"No!" Roseclaw shoulder-checked his mate, sending the smaller tom stumbling with a lilting laugh. "Absolutely not! No monster stories, no ghost stories, no scary stories full stop!"
"Alright, alright, no stories," Pinefeather smiled, twining their tails together as he leaned into Roseclaw. "Just walk with me, pretend it's back to the seaside cove where we used to shelter from the wind. I liked it there. It's where I knew I loved you for the first time."
"You never told me that," Roseclaw said, ducking his head to hide the quiet, pleased smile on his maw.
"Didn't I? Well, it was one night after we'd been speaking for a while, and we wandered down to the cove, and we were sitting there watching the moon over the ocean, and you said it made you feel at peace because if you ever forgot the beauty of the world in hard times, the water would reflect it back to you, and that made you calm, and made you strong. And I knew then- and it seemed so silly at the time- that you were the cat I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Someone who could look at something so small and find something so beautiful in it. You were perfect."
"You are perfect," Roseclaw said, leaning their foreheads together, "you always have been, to me. You always will be. I love you with all of my soul."
"And I, you." They shared a private, loving smile, as they continued on, the banks of the lagoon at the base of the waterfall drawing into view with greater clarity.

"Hey." Rivuletflight looked up to see Archibald looking down at him, black tom backlit by the light of the moon. A warm smile crossed his maw as, without waiting for further permission, Archie settled himself down by Rivuletflight's side. It had been a tough road to walk, befriending the prickly black tom. He was clearly embarrassed by the help he'd received from Fircloud and himself coming to GroveClan, and he'd stuck close by Novella for the first few moons. After that, it was roundabout teasing and cautious glances, but after the time they'd spent together helping Mousestone in EchoClan, Archie seemed more willing to be openly affectionate.
"Hey yourself," he purred, nudging his friend's shoulder, "taking a break from brooding tonight?"
"I don't brood," Archie snapped, glowering at Rivuletflight as he barely stifled a giggle. "Don't be antagonistic. I'll tell your dad."
"That's seriously kit level tactics. Besides, Dad would agree with me. You're very broody. It's your whole thing." Archie rolled his eyes, but he didn't say anything to that. Rivuletflight let the silence sit for a bit, following the one-eyed tom's gaze across the camp to where Mousestone was tussling with Dusklight, clearly keeping up on her combat training. A proud Novella sat close by, chest puffed out, her fur brushing Sedgefire's as the large molly whispered something to Wolverinejaw that made her laugh.
"Everything okay?" He asked, having realized Archie had slipped back into his furrowed-brow pout that meant he was thinking hard about something. The other tom jumped, before he shook his head with an amused smile.
"I'm fine yeah. Before you start, I was not brooding, I was just... thinking."
"Dangerous," Rivuletflight dodged a swat with a laugh, "seriously, though. What's on your mind?"
"Do you think it's too late for me?" Rivuletflight gave him a curious look. "I mean... when I came here I expected to be rejected for where I came from, after everything the Kingdom did to this clan. So I pushed everyone away, and I never bothered to make friends with anyone. You were stubborn, and Mousestone and I became friends by virtue of the fact that she's my sister's mate, but outside of you two... well. I wonder if I've willingly put my paw in a bear trap. I never thought Badgerstar would choose me to mentor an apprentice, and I'm constantly so afraid that I'm going to do something wrong, or do her a disservice. I feel... out of place, and I know it's my own fault, but... do you think it's too late to change it?" Rivuletflight's face softened.
"I don't think it's too late, Archie. I'm sure anyone with two braincells to rub together could understand why you were apprehensive about being here at first, after everything you endured. You've accomplished so much, and whatever your brain tells you, you've done a fantastic job with Lavenderpaw. She's going to be a great warrior, thanks to you. As for making friends and finding your place... that's something only you can do, but no one will hold it against you that it's taken you this long to heal. Everyone has their own time, and for what it's worth, I'll be standing at your shoulder the whole time."
"You really mean that?"
"Of course I do. You're special to me, Archie. I wouldn't dream of-"
"I meant... about being able to fit in," Archie wouldn't meet his eyes, looking embarrassed, but pleased. Rivuletflight's pelt grew hot as he let out a laugh at his blunder, turning his gaze toward the sky. "But... you're special to me too. I don't know if I make that clear enough, but... you mean a lot to me. You're... radiant."
"Oh?" Archie still wouldn't meet his eyes, but he gave a small nod. "The most handsome tom you've ever seen, am I? Shining brighter than all the stars of Silverpelt?" Archie let out a groan, shoving his friend with his paw and sending him into fits of laughter.
"You're alright," Archie said, after a moment, "but you fish for compliments too much."

A pair of golden paws crossed Frostbranch's field of vision, and he glanced up to see Sparkfur smiling at him. Clumsily, the ginger tom signed 'mind if I sit?'. Frostbranch shook his head, and nodded to the spot next to him. Gladly, Sparkfur sat, their shoulders pressed together in the warmth of Newleaf.
'What's up?' Frostbranch signed tilting his head curiously at Sparkfur. The ginger squinted at him for a moment, before his eyes lit up. Of all the cats Frostbranch had taught his signing to, Sparkfur had the hardest time picking it up. Dusklight was the most adept, mastering the need for precise movements early on. Flintburr retained the lessons better, but was a little clumsy until he picked it up. It troubled Sparkfur the most, but the little ginger seemed the most determined to get it right, even moreso beyond the medicine cats who insisted it would be useful if he were ever injured.
'Not a lot', Sparkfur signed back 'just wanted to talk'.
'Okay', Frostbranch signed back, 'what about?'.
'Nothing important or serious', Sparkfur responded, with a small, almost shy smile, 'I just like hanging out with you'.
'I like hanging out with you too,' after a brief moment, he added, 'even when I'm not teaching you signs. Which you are bad at by the way'. Sparkfur laughed, shaking his head good-naturedly as he beamed at Frostbranch.
'I know,' he signed, 'but it's worth it for you'. Frostbranch blinked at him in astonishment, and Sparkfur tilted his head curiously, signing something the white tom was no longer paying attention to. The moon that filtered down into the grove illuminated the small tom's fur and made him shine, backlit by the luminosity of the moon that made him look of StarClan. His curious eyes sparkled by starlight, and his ears pricked forward adorably. Frostbranch never thought he'd find someone's ears cute, and yet here he was, thinking about the petite build of the other tom, and how small his paws looked next to Frostbranch's own, and the way his nose twitched when he had something to say but didn't say it.
"Frostbranch?" He realized Sparkfur was saying his name, maw moving tentatively and slowly so that he could understand. Frostbranch smiled, lifting his eyes to the other's again.
'We don't have to talk about anything to hang out', he signed, 'share tongues with me'. Sparkfur look startled for a moment, and then overwhelmingly shy, as he gave a pleased nod and settled in close to Frostbranch, winding around him carefully as the white tom began to groom him, their bodies pressed tight together under the canopy of stars.

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"It was touch and go there for a minute," Maplefall breathed, tail curling around her swelling middle. Badgerstar gave his mate a small smile, pressing his nose against her cheek in a manner that made her rumble a pleased purr. From the nursery, Flowershine and Boulderflame shepherded their kits toward the Leader's Tree. Bramblekit's cough had cleared up over the last moon, and it was finally time to join his siblings as apprentices. Maplefall's relief was palpable: the idea of one of her own kits catching a cough, or even herself, was distressing to think about.
"What a lucky day this is for GroveClan," Badgerstar called, "finally, no more kits to cause trouble... but plenty of apprentices to cause supervised trouble." A ripple of laughter swept through the clan. "Thanks to the skill of our medicine cats, Bramblekit is finally ready to become an apprentice, and cause a whole world of trouble for some poor, unsuspecting mentor. Bramblekit, from this day forward until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Bramblepaw to symbolize the journey that StarClan will guide you on. Your mentor will be Avocetnose-" the black and white tom startled- "though he is young, Avocetnose has shown himself to be diligent, kind and thoughtful. He received excellent training from his mentor, Longriver, and I know that he will be just as fantastic a mentor to you. Congratulations." Bramblepaw gave a shy smile to his parents as the clan yowled for him, before he cautiously wandered across to touch noses with his new mentor.
"We have one more order of business before Lionheart assigns patrols. As some of you may know, Maplefall is making the move to the nursery as she is expecting our third litter of kits-" he paused as cheers and whoops went up around the clan, which made Maplefall laugh and mock-bow, "-so I will be assigning Cherrypaw a new mentor. I'm sure you'll miss Maplefall greatly, but in her place I am assigning you Fawnrunner. Fawnrunner is optimistic and sweet and a dear friend to Maplefall who I know will keep you updated on her progress. Thank you everyone for turning out, and have a fantastic day."
With Maplefall leaning on his shoulder, Badgerstar lead her toward the nursery, Starlingpaw falling in step on his other side, chatting amicably to Maplefall about what she would need in the nursery and if she would like to sit in on their training today. Badgerstar let out a pleased sigh, turning his face up to catch the warmth of the sun against his pelt. Something told him it was going to be a wonderful day.

"Everything okay?" Lavenderpaw looked up to find Archibald waiting for her. The rest of the patrol had vanished out of sight, Dusklight's booming laugh echoing faintly in the distance. Sedgefire was trying to talk over him, wherever they were, which meant that undoubtedly Novella and Wolverinejaw were with them. Just her and Archie.
Archie was a good mentor, a little shy and unsure of himself, but patient with her and his insecurity lead to him being relentlessly thorough so that Lavenderpaw was sure there was no way in the world she could have not understood his instructions. She trusted him, and he'd likely come back to check on her when he realized she wasn't following, but he'd let the rest of the patrol go on ahead, which meant she wouldn't be crowded. It would be safe to talk about with Archie.
"I'm okay," Lavenderpaw assured him, watching the way his shoulders relaxed, "I just... thought I caught a weird scent. At first I thought maybe it was just a weird Highgarden scent, but it was kind of familiar. Come smell." Archie moved closer, scenting the air as a confused look settled onto his face. He clearly agreed with her, unable to place it. But, as he stood next to her and the breeze wafted his scent toward her, she suddenly understood. She leaned closer and sniffed him again, as he gave her a puzzled look.
"Uh... Lavenderpaw? What are you doing?"
"It smells like you," she said, "well... not like you, as in it is you, because you and Novella both have GroveClan scent overlapping, but this is Highgarden scent overlapping with..."
"Kingdom scent," Archie said, barely suppressing a shudder. Lavenderpaw glanced at him worriedly, and he gave her a tight smile. "Good catch, squirt."
"Thanks," she paused, frowning at him a little, "you're okay, right?"
"I'm alright, yeah."
"It could be refugees," she said, "like you and Novella, seeking shelter in a different clan. Do you remember anyone else who wasn't so bad there?" Archie's brow furrowed and his frown deepened, as he thought back, and then shook his head a little, hunching his shoulders.
"After Novella was chased out, I didn't really make friends or bother getting to know the other cats. Spencer- the medicine cat, I guess- was okay. Neurotic, but nice enough." He didn't state the worrisome thing about Spencer, and what that could mean, deciding that Lavenderpaw was already worried enough for him without the potential prospect of Erasmus lurking over Spencer's shoulder like a shadow.
"Well..." Lavenderpaw said, "we should hold out hope, I think. Do we tell someone?" Archie thought for a moment, before he shook his head.
"No. We need more proof before we panic the clan like that. We'll keep an eye out, okay?"
"Well, you'll keep one out," Lavenderpaw said, and Archie gave her a confused look before she grinned, impishly, "I'll keep both out." She danced out of the way of his swat around the ears with a light laugh, before the two of them bounded away from the troubling scent to catch up with the patrol. The scent didn't leave Archie's mind, not even as the patrol passed the rest of the borders uneventfully, the Kingdom's scent replaced with a new, sweeter clan scent. Not as they made it back to camp, and Rivuletflight dragged him away to talk to Kererucall and Harepuddle. Not even as they climbed into a nest together, wrapping together tightly, not even as Rivuletflight's even breathing and handsome, calm, sleeping face lulled Archibald into blessedly dreamless sleep.

"You're awake early," Avocetnose turned to smile at Sandcatcher, as she pulled herself out of the warrior's den and padded across to him. Avocetnose touched his nose to her forehead as she pressed her own to his cheek.
"I was waiting for you," he admitted, with a shy smile. The ginger molly gave him a curious look, tilting her head.
"You were?"
"Uh-huh. I was wondering if you wanted to go for a walk with me, before patrol assignments are given out? Bramblepaw and I are still busy fixing up the warrior's den so I'm not sure if we'll get time later and there's... something I want to say to you." Sandcatcher blinked for a moment, before she gave him a warm smile.
"Okay then, let's go. But not too far, Lionheart was my mentor and she can and will have my ears if we're late for patrols." Avocetnose laughed, but he nodded, and the pair fell into step together as they headed out of the camp. The sun shone over head, morning breeze crisp, driving Sandcatcher close against Avocetnose's side in order to stave off the chill. The pair of them made their way over dewy ground, stepping lightly around debris on the ground, until they crested a rise, the shimmering surface of the lake visible in the distance.
"I always forget how beautiful it is out here," Avocetnose said, taking a deep breath in. Sandcatcher's eyes flitted to Avocetnose briefly, before she turned her gaze forward again to look out at the lake.
"I forget too," she said, "all that time weaving in amongst the trees makes you feel so small and the scope so narrow, but when we get up high like here and you can see the territory like this... I'm lucky that I came here. That my paws lead me this far. To GroveClan and... to you." Avocetnose smiled at her.
"I'm glad that whatever drove my mother had her come this way as well," he said, "she had more options, I think. Any clan would have gladly taken kits they could indoctrinate to their cause, but it could have been anywhere but GroveClan you know?
