LAST MOON:
Noble heaved himself to his paws with a grunt. He hadn’t slept well the night before. He guessed it was because of the newfound clan at their border - MistClan he think he heard a passing patrol say. They had hidden themselves well.

Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, padding out of his den, steps heavy with tiredness. Almost immediately Civetfang races over to him, excitement blazing in his bright eyes.

Noble groaned. Civetfang always had his look in his eye when he boasted or fawned over and about his two kits. And Noble was really not in the mood to have his General brag about some kits.

But Civetfang either didn’t notice Noble’s posture or ignored it. Eyes shining, he puffed out his chest and made his grand announcement: “Duskkit and Aspenkit are ready to become a Cadet and Rookie!”

Noble huffed. “That time already?”

Civetfang’s chest deflated at Noble’s uninterested attitude.

“I....it means....they....you...” Civetfang trailed off the fragmented sentence. “Do I care? Only for their new blood.” Noble said with a tired flick of his tail. “I’ll call a meeting.”

With protesting muscles, Noble leaped onto leader’s ledge and let out a loud Yoel. All the cats save for the dawn patrol gathered below the ledge. Elmblood emerged from the nursery, kits following. Duskkit’s ever step screamed nervousness but his puffed out chest and high held tail also showed he was proud. Aspenkit was more quiet with her excitement, and if she was nervous, she didn’t show it. This gave Noble a fair idea of who he wanted to mentor them.

As Elmblood, Civetfang, and their kits took a place in the front of the crowd, Noble leaped of the ledge and landed softly in front of them.

Then Noble started the ceremony. “Duskkit And Aspenkit, you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to become a Cadet and Rookie respectively. Duskkit, you will now be known as Cadetdusk. Flareblood, you are ready for a Cadet. I hope you will use all of your skills to train Cadetdusk. Gods look upon this pairing and approve of it."

The Empire erupted into cheers, Cadetdusk's name becoming a chant among caterwauls of joy. But despite the noise, it only took a single flick of his tail for Noble to quiet the Empire.

"Aspenkit, you will now be known as Rookieaspen. Swantalon, you may be young, but you are ready for a Rookie. I hope you will use all of your skills to train Rookieaspen. Gods look upon this pairing and approve of it."

The black tom sat back on his haunches as his cats cheered again. Blinking tiredness out of his eyes, Noble turned to go back to his den when a cough interrupted him. "Uh...my lord?"

Neritevine. Noble swung around to glare at the she-cat. She was flanked by Spottedtooth, Wormwood, and Rogerfang. "What is it?" The Supreme Leader muttered without any of his usual spunk.

"Remember when we evaluated Cadetstag's assessment a few days ago? Isn't it time he became a soldier?"

Noble hissed at himself. He was so tired he forgot about the new blood. "Gods help me." He muttered under his breath. If Neritevine or her companions heard him, they said nothing. "What are your friends here for?" Noble asked.

Wormwood dipped his head. "We think that Cadetsyrinx, Auletris, Cadetduo, and of course your cadet, Cadetmidnight are ready to take their soldier assessment."

Noble was suddenly on the tips of his paws, fur bristling. "What about my daughters!?"

Rogerfang winced and Wormwood backed up, leaving the answer to Spottedtooth. "They've been slacking in their training. They've only learned two skills out of the five necessary that the rest of the twelve moons old habe learned."

Noble sank back down, tiredness crashing upon him again. "Ah. We'll assess the Cadets and Auletris later this moon. Neritevine, get your Cadet ready for his ceremony. And make sure Cadetfallen has no hard feelings - sibling rivalry does not always turn out the way you want it."

Noble was thrown back into his memories; Strike's snarling face, telling Noble he amounted to nothing, the yip of a fox, the crack of Strike's neck against the tree. Noble snapped back to the present, shivering. He may not have liked Strike much, but he did respect his older brother. The four cats he was facing wisely did not mention his shivering.

"As you wish." Neritevine said with a dip of her head, and she and the others walked away.

Cadetstag was almost jumping on his paws.

"Really!? I thought King Noble forgot!" he purred when Neritevine announced his soldier ceremony.

"I'm sure he did. Now let me clean your pelt - you probably have half the territory in it!"

Cadetstag purred at his adoptive mother's joke, but sat still for her. If he had to choose one thing he really cared about, it was this - the pride in Neritevine's eyes, the glittering amusement in Cadetfallen's - wait, wait, wait. "When did you get in here!?" Cadetstag yelped, jumping up as he saw his brother.

Cadetfallen snorted. "With you two yowling praise at each other, a deaf badger with the loudest snores could hear you!"

"Hey!" complained Cadetstag. Cadetfallen smiled, but sadly. "To bad I can't become a soldier with you."

As Neritevine finished grooming his pelt, Cadetstag touched noses with his brother. "You just came later than us. You'll be fine - you'll learn everything quickly then you can be with me!"

Cadetfallen nuzzled Cadetstag back when King Noble's yowl called the Empire to leader's ledge. Suddenly forgetting everything, Cadetstag was out in the clearing faster than Rogerfang. As soon as King Noble saw the Cadet, he began the ceremony.

"I Noble, leader of the Empire, proudly call on the all-powerful Gods and Goddesses to look down on this cat. He has learnt the ways of your mighty code and is ready to become a full soldier. Cadetstag, do you promise to uphold the Empiric Code, protect this Empire, it's members, and the faith of the Gods, even if you must give away your life?"

"I do."

"Then by the power invested in me, I present to you your warrior name. Cadetstag, from this moment on, you will be known as Staghorn, for your fierce readiness to spear any enemy with your claws, sharp as horns."

Noble raised his head to the sky and yowled, "Staghorn! Staghorn!" The rest of the Empire joined in, Neritevine and Cadetfallen loudest of all. Staghorn puffed his chest out, the model image of pride. This was something he could get used to.

Noble turned to go back to his den again after Staghorn's name had worn his Empire out, before remembering what Neritevine said about his daughters slacking earlier. He groaned and pulled himself towards the fresh kill pile, where his daughters were sitting, sharing a hare. "Rookieslate! Rookieice!" He called.

His daughters shot each other a look before standing to face him.

"Dad." They both said. Rookieslate looked serious and Rookieice, sheepish.

"I'm sure you know what I'm here about." Noble said. Silence. Then Rookieslate broke the tension with a sigh.

"I'm sorry dad. I didn't really think training would be this hard - or the consequences so harsh. Even Cadetduo bragging left and right is better then being held back a few moons."

"I'm sorry too." Rookieice whispered. "I'll try harder next time, I promise."

Noble sighed, rubbing his muzzle against his daughters'. "You two got so old, so fast. How I wish your mother was here to see you now."

Rookieslate looked up with a sad smile. "She's watching us from The Isles of the Blessed, I'm sure!"

Noble's small smile faded. "I hope so, my little rock. I hope so."

Immediately Ryepatch felt his fur spike up with apprehension when he had smelled the cat scent. Of course, Lemonfur had insisted on going into this strange territory anyways, and as her protector and lover Ryepatch followed. But now they had ended up facing off with two toms and three she-cats.

"What do you want," a gray tom, the leader of the patrol said, "And if it isn't anything good I would suggest getting your furry butts out of here!"

Lemonfur curled her lip. "Me and my protector here are looking for a place to stay. And if you puny cats are all this territory here has to offer, I'm sure we can handle you."

"Lemonfur..." Ryepatch warned.

The gray tom crouched onto his haunches, ready to pounce on Lemonfur but a tortoiseshell molly laid her tail on the gray tom's haunches. "Graystorm." She said softly.

Immediately Lemonfur's demeanor changed. "Graystorm? That's a clan name, right?"

The tom relaxed, obviously seeing Lemonfur's manner as no threat. "Not a clan name, an Empire name."

Lemonfur shrugged. "Sounds similar enough. Me and my friend Ryepatch here were looking for a place to stay, as I said earlier. Could you take us to your leader?"

Graystorm and the tortoiseshell she-cat shared a glance before Graystorm flicked his tail. "He seemed tired, but I guess I could."

Ryepatch flicked his tail uneasily but he trusted Lemonfur's judgement and followed her and the patrol in silence until they reached the pyramid. Something Ryepatch had only heard about in stories but here it was - real. Graystorm led them inside.

The air in what was obviously the camp was cool, but not stale - perfect. A beam of sunlight cut through the open top of the pyramid, and cats were sunning themselves there. A calico tom stood upon their arrival. "Who are they!?" He hissed.

"Stand down Staghorn." The tortoiseshell said, putting her tail on the tom's. "You're not on vigil 'till nighttime."

Staghorn sniffed unhappily with a rotten look at Lemonfur and Ryepatch. "I can take my duties as seriously as I want to slacker." He said with a sniff, turning back on his odd guard. The tortoiseshell, though obviously his senior, grinned with amusement at his insult and padded over to a den.

As she called inside, Ryepatch heard Graystorm whisper to Lemonfur, "That's Spottedtooth. She's rugged, completely loyal, and could probably best half of the clan by herself."

Ryepatch snorted and Graystorm shot him a look and Ryepatch shot him back an apologetic smile. Jokes were great 0 if you weren't going to like someone laughing at them, don't say them!

Then Spottedtooth came back with a black tom who had obviously been awoken from a nap.

"Yes." He said, scanning the former GraveClan cats. "New blood. Could be handy. What are your names?"

Lemonfur answered for herself and Ryepatch. "Lemonfur and Ryepatch. I'm the former, he's the latter."

The black cat's eyes sharpened with interest. "Those sound like clan names. What clan did you two come from?"

This time Ryepatch answered. "GraveClan. They disbanded."

The black tom let out a tsk noise. "As so many tend to do." He turned to Spottedtooth. "Tell Civetfang to watch over their work this mood. They may be handy." Ryepatch puffed out his chest at the half-praise. Then the black tom and Spottedtooth left, the rest of the patrol breaking up.

"So." Ryepatch said. "So." Answered Lemonfur.

Silence stretched between them before Ryepatch sighed. "That black tom seems just like Wiltedstar."

Lemonfur sighed. "I just hope this place is a better place to bring up kits."

Ryepatch was startled. Why was she talking about this now. "I...I thought you liked me only as a friend!"

Lemonfur shot him a surprised look, her face then curling into a sad smile. "I do. I mean...with a different tom. I know it breaks your heart to hear that...but our mateship would ruin our friendship. And..your a great tom friend."

Ryepatch was sure every cat anywhere could hear his heart shattering again. He and Lemonfur had had this coversation many times but it still broke his heart everytime. "It's ok." Ryepatch said, surprised his words could stay even. "We can't always get what we want."

After her nap, Peregrinefeather felt refreshed. She was glad to have left GraveClan and Wiltedstar once and for all, but she longed for the company of cats again. That was why, when she picked up the scent trail of two cats she had followed it. It led here, to what was definitely the border of something - a seemingly endless fence. And the she-cat knew she had to go over it.

"Flying." She muttured to herself. "Great."

With a grunt the she-cat pulled herself up the fence and dropped down on the otherside. She stood sniffing the air for a second before voices caught her ears. A black tom, looking invigorated, crested the hill in front of her, shortly followed by a slightly smaller tom. Then a white molly, a ginger cat she couldn't tell the gender of, and a brown tom. "Oi!" she called.

She knew they had seen her the moment they had crested the hill, but they acted surprised to their credit. Or at least, everyone but the larger black tom and the she-cat did.

"Who are you?" The smaller black tom reached Peregrinefeather first. "I - " she started, only to be tackled by the white molly. "What do you want and who are you?" she hissed, slashing Pereginefeather's nose.

The hurt she-cat hissed in pain, but little blood trickled out of the wound - it was not deep, had barely drawn blood - it was just painful.

"Alright Winterfang, Cadetmidnight, that's enough." The larger black tom said lazily. Peregrinefeather scrambled to her feet as the white molly relieved her weight. The larger black tom looked Peregrinefeather in the eye. "You smell like those newbies. Lemonpelt and Ryepatch, was it?"

Peregrinefeather felt her pelt bristle in suprise. Ryepatch? She remembered him from GraveClan, leaving with Lemonfur! That must be Lemonpelt, only the black tom had got her name wrong.

"I believe we come from the same clan, GraveClan, yes." Peregrinefeather said, hesitant to tell these strange cats more.

The ginger cat's eyes - Peregrinefeather could now tell he was a tom - sharpened with interest. "Are all you GraveClan cats so strong and grumpy?"

The brown cat wacked the ginger with his tail and Winterfang snorted with annoyance, pushing them apart. The large black tom shot them all a look. "New blood." He said looking back at Peregrinefeather.

"The Empire needs to grow if we are to be feared, and strong cats add to the image. I think I shall invite you to join The Empire of the Gods...what is your name?"

"Peregrinefeather."

"Great, too long, I don't care. Your new name is Falconfeather. Got it, now follow me."

And that was the end of conversation. Peregrinefeather - no Falconfeather was now stuck with some sort of clan she had never even agreed to join.

THIS MOON:

Nettlesting settle down in the shadows of a corner of the camp, Tawnyfall following. Her little rebellion, minus Roamingthunder. Nettlesting frowned. This rebellion had to grow if it was to be successful.

"What are we going to do now?" Tawnyfall asked, her yellow eyes glittering.

Nettlesting felt a grin creep across her face. "I'll tell you in a moment. And, pass this first bit of info over to Roamingthunder: we need more cats in the rebellion."

Tawnyfall's face fell. "You're not talking about the rogue scent you found a few days back, are you?"

Nettlesting nodded. "They could be substantial for the big fight, but I want to wait a moon to make sure they stay nearby. If they leave, they're to restless to stay and wait for the plan to go through. If they stay - they'll wait."

"And what makes you convinced they'll follow your plans?"

"Power. Offer them a place in our new clan, a clan after the Empire."

Nettlesting could tell Tawnyfall wasn't happy about this comment, but she continued on anyways. "Anycats you could see who would be willing to join us?"

Tawnyfall thought for a moment. "Those new GraveClan cats. And Rogerfang."

Nettlesting mulled that over. "Lemonfur's an immediate no. She wants kits, and she seems to be getting along with Graystorm swell - and he's a pretty big follower of Noble and his ideals. Ryepatch is just sad because he likes her and she doesn't share the feeling. Falconfeather on the other paw....she would probably join us. Same goes for Rogerfanf. I'll ask them next moon after the rogues make their decision."

Tawnyfall nodded. A look of cunning and excitement was creeping back onto her face now. "I can tell you're planning something for the rebellion Nettlesting. What is it?"

"Murders. Murders of Noble's followers."

Tawnyfall's face went slack and Nettlesting got the feeling her smile wouldn't come back. "M - murders!? Nettlesting, that's going pretty far, even for you!"

Nettlesting glared at her accomplice. "We can't get anything done if all these mini-Nobles stand in the way! Besides, the less vicious the cats in our new clan after the rebellion wins, the better."

"I - you - no." Tawnyfall choked out. Nettlesting was on her paws immediately. "How would you like me to tell Noble about you organizing this rebellion and dragging me and Roamingthunder into it, hmmm?"

"But I - that was you!"

Nettlesting shot Tawnyfall a look full of victory. "But Noble doesn't know that, does he?"

Silence. "Fine. I'll do what you need me to do."

Good. Thought Nettlesting. She is scared for her own safety.

The red-brown she-cat smirked. "Our first target is Blazelion."

Tawnyfall was bristling again. "But he's a father! Hi kits are barely two moons old!

"Which is exactly why he would make a perfect target. He couldn't train his kits to be Noble-lovers, and Mantasting can't do that either, as she is a perma-queen."

Tawnyfall took a deep, shaky breath. "Fine." She said. "Fine. But don't you think I will defend you if the blame falls on you."

As the tortoiseshell stalked away, Nettlesting called after her with a sing-song voice, "Remember I can tell Noble about the rebellion you started any time!"

Snowclaw stepped over Cranekit and Aspkit, who were wrestling in front of the nursery. "Move." She said to Woodkit, who was blocking the nursery entrance, grooming himself. "Sorry, Snowclaw, m'am!" He yelped, scrambling out of the way.

Snowclaw rolled her eyes. What have I gotten into? She wondered as Oakface's mind swam in her head. She didn't like him, not one bit, but they were trying for kits for the sake of their clans, not love. But it's forbidden love! Her mind sang. Snowclaw snorted at herself. Since when did King Noble care about forbidden relationships? His adopted kits were half clan!

As she entered the cool nursery cave, Snowclaw stopped for a moment to let her eyes adjust to the calm darkness. "Snowclaw?" Mantasting asked, surprised, her white pelt glowing in the dark.

"Hmph." Snowclaw answered. Mantasting purred, pushing herself to her paws. "Who is the lucky tom?"

"Er -" Snowclaw wondered how the queens would react to her knews that she was trying for kits with a MistClan tom. "No one yet. I was just thinking of trying for kits."

"With who?" That was Cleopatra's teasing voice now. Every cat with a brain cell in the Empire knew Cleopatra's flirty personality and affinity to have affairs with other toms. Maybe she would be okay to talk to about a MistClan-Empire relationship, as her mate was a tom from some unheard of clan.

"Er...fine. Oakface of MistClan." Snowclaw spat the words out, worried about something for once, even if it was her own safety. Silence. Then, Cleopatra. "Oh."

Fernlight, the newest queen to the clan, shrugged. "I'd be no help here. I'll go check on the kits." The tabby queen squeezed between Snowclaw and the tunnel entrance and padded away, pawsteps echoing.

Cleopatra gave a minute shrug. "You love him, try for kits. You just want kits, do it. Just want to help the Empire - even better. Just do it. Either way, you'l end of loving your kits." At this last sentence, fondness creeped into Cleopatra's voice.

Mantasting snorted. "I'd say only do it if you love him. No love is a sad, sad thing."

This time, both Snowclaw and Cleopatra snorted. "I don't love Redstar, and Snowclaw's as hard as a rock - I doubt she loves this Oakface either. Do you?" Asked Cleopatra. Snowclaw didn't have to hesitate on her answer.

"Not really no."

Mantasting tossed her head in exasperation. "Well why are you going to try for kits? Do you just...want them?"

"I...yes." Sighed Snowclaw. Admitting that seemed to relieve a weight of her shoulders. "Then do it! And leave us alone, good riddance." Snapped Mantasting, obviously still annoyed at Snowclaw not liking Oakface.

"It's not like he likes me back." the general muttered under her breath as she left the nursery.

Cranekit untangled themself from Aspkit's claws once again. "Why are you so good at fighting!?" They complained.

The molly just smirked back. "Because you're a bird brain!"

"Oi!" Cranekit said, tackling the younger kit. Aspkit cackled, pushing Cranekit off easily. "You'll have to try harder, little crane!"

Cranekit readied their body by crouching, scanning Aspkit for weakness when Rookiestream's voice cut into the game. "Aspkit, whya re you associating with this strange little kit."

"Hey!" Cranekit complained, standing up. Rookiestream ignored them.

"You sure Cranekit's indecision about his gender isn't going to rub off on you?" The rookie sneered.

Aspkit was bristling now. "Hey! Cranekit is a they no matter what you say! And no, we are both perfectly satisfied with our gender, thanks."

Rookiestream cocked her head...well cockily. "Are you sure - "

But Cranekit cut her off. "Why don't you, you insecure, disgraceful form of a Rookie go away and leave us alone! In case you didn't notice, everyone is happy until you come along, you....you insignificant fluffbutt! A mess of scratches!" They hissed, using Graystorm's signature insult.

The Rookie's eyes widened and she stood flexing her claws for a moment before hissing and taking a swipe at Cranekit's nose before stomping away, obviously wincing about their remarks about her scars from the training incident. Cranekit grinned from where they had ducked Rookiestream's blow. "You missed!" They called after her. To her credit, she didn't respond.

Blazelion was sitting besides Stormthrush, awaiting Civetfang to assign him to a patrol, when Tawnyfall came up to him. "Hey, uh, Blazelion, could we do a one-on-one patrol? I kinda want to talk about mentoring one of your kits." The tortoiseshell shot a furtive look back towards the nursery, where Nettlesting sat watching them. When she realized Blazelion had been looking, the young molly snapped her head away.

Blazelion sighed, looking towards Tawnyfall. "Did Nettlesting put you up to this? I know you're friends and all, but she's not going to get on my goodside with you being there."

Tawnyfall shook her head quickly. "No - I wanted to mentor one of your kits, and....and Nettlesting did to. But she was too scared to ask you herself - afraid you'd lash out or something."

Blazelion's mouth formed a small and silent 'oh' and he pushed through the crowd of cats surrounding Civetfang. "Civetfang, Tawnyfall and I are heading out on patrol." The gray tom nodded distractedly. "Alright, you do that."

Blazelion pushed back to Tawnyfall. "Let's go." He said with a flick of his tail. As they headed out of the camp, he started talking about his kits to Tawnyfall. "I think sweet Cranekit would be a perfect fit for you, they love strong she-cats..."

As Blazelion rambled on, Tawnyfall realized she would never feel as sorry as she would soon, when she would take Blazelion's life from his kits.

Noble's tiredness from earlier in the moon had evaporated. The black supreme leader stood at the sunhole at the top of camp, looking down at the tiny cats below them. A weird thought entered his head. They look like ants.

Shaking the kit-like thought off, Noble found his eyes drawn to a few cats in particular - Nettlesting, the cat he loathed and was sure to try to undermine him or leave the Empire soon. His daughters and son, practicing fighting near the fresh kill pile. And.....Barleyslash. Her beautiful white and ginger pelt. Her fierce personality and willingness to protect Noble. How her flirting had dissapeared quickly and the way she looked at him, like he was the sun. She loved him. And he....did he love her?

No, he couldn't - Midnight, Icenose, his two kits in HurricaneClan - all gone or far away from him. Anycat he loved seemed to have bad fortune. And besides, if he loved again, what would Icenose think, up in one of the afterlives?

All of a sudden Noble smelled her sweet scent and felt her fur brush his. But when he looked around, she wasn't there. It will be okay, my love. She seemed to whisper. Your love will last long and strong. And Barleyslash is a great cat, especially for you - and we will meet and have peace her with the Gods.

Noble felt Icenose fading away. "No, don't go!" He called to her invisible spirit, but the wind whipped the last trace of her sweet scent away. "Icenose....." Noble murmured.

He shook his head, eyes locked on Barleyslash as her form slipped out of his view, towards the camp entrance. The supreme leader turned and watched her head towards the forest. With a small grin, he allowed himself to love again.

Barleyslash trotted into the forest, some snow still sitting on the branches. The long-furred she-cat relished the chill - soon it would be greenleaf, and her pelt would burn off. Currently she was looking for a place to admit her love...to her supreme leader.

Yes, she knew Noble had a dead mate. Yes, she knew he had kits, even if they were adopted, from her. And yes, she knew he was just Noble - fierce, disagreeable, snappy, but also loyal, steadfast, and intelligent. And her love had won over her better judgement, and the molly was looking for the perfect place.

And then she found it. A young tree, who's leaves had not started blooming yet, with branches encased by ice, some having half-dripping frozen droplets. It would melt soon, yes, so Barleyslash needed to find her love. But first she would relish this moment - and the cold.

Tawnyfall had taken charge of the patrol, muttering mmmhmm, and sure, and yea, to whatever babbling about his kits the tom was still doing. She needed somewhere nice and quiet to - no, she couldn't think about it. Gods, forgive me for what I am about to do. She thought. Then, as soon as the reached the forest at the edge of Empire territory, the molly spun around to attack her clanmate.

Her claws dug into Blazelions side, and she slashed them down, causing Blazelion to howl with pain. But even, hurt, he was faster then Tawnyfall had expected. As he danced away, Blazelion's voice turned into a snarl. "You traitor!"

"I'm sorry, I have to!" Yelped Tawnyfall, dodging the tom's lunge. "No - you - don't!" The ginger tom said through breaths. He sliced open Tawnyfall's nose and the tortoiseshell yowled in pain. Blazelion took the chance to hare around her and sink his teeth into Tawnyfall's tail. Her yowl grew louder.

Tawnyfall wrenched her tail away from him with a hiss. The battle was real now, she dove under his belly before arching her back, sending her spine into his stomach. He grunted and fell to the side, winded. Tawnyfall raised a paw to deliver the killing blow, but Blazelion rolled to the side, Tawnyfall's claws only nicking the back of his neck.

"Gods above!" Tawnyfall hissed unhappily. Maybe the battle wasn't real. She didn't like the bloody task anymore then she did now.

Blazelion lunged into Tawnyfall's slide, claws barely piercing her skin. But his deed was done as Tawnyfall collapsed with an "Umph." on her side and the top lay all his wait on her muzzle, trying to deny her air.

Tawnyfall gasped into his stifling fur, hind claws scrabbling at his fur until a claw hit his stomach and he hissed in pain, leaping away.

Tawnyfall took her chance to lunge into Blazelion's side, knocking him down. Her head reeled from lack of air, and as Blazelion's paw came up to wack her in the temple, Tawnyfall's dizziness worsened and she knew she wouldn't stay consious much longer. But she had to kill him now....or she would be killed herself. "I'm sorry." She whispered. Her claws struck true and Blazelion's body went still. And then Tawnyfall's world faded to black.

Barleyslash had heard the yowls. She had ran as fast as her paws could carry her. And now, as she sat in surprise staring at the bodies of her two clanmates, the molly shook of her shock and padded tentatively over to them to see if they were alive. She saw the rising and falling of Tawnyfall's flank - good, she was alive - but Blazelion was still and his fur was going cold. Barleyslash blinked here eyes, praying the father of two moon old kits was not dead, but his state didn't change. Then Paisleyburner and Cadetpool burst into the clearing.

"What was the yowling? Barleyslash are you okay?" Pasileyburner demanded immediately. Cadetpool took in the scene first. "Oh." He said quietly, crouching down no sniff Blazelion's body. "Dead."

"Tawnyfall is still alive." Barleyslash said, turning away to go back to camp. She must tell Mantasting - Blazelion's mate - and his kits about his untimely demise.

"Barleyslash." Paisleyburner's voice was gentle. "You must go back to camp to tell Mantasting - " Barleyslash cut the Shaman off. "I know, I know."

The mostly white molly took her time on the way back to camp, but her paws led her to the inevetible. Almost as soon as she entered camp, Noble was by her side. "I have something to tell you." He purred, obviously not noticing her mood.

"Me to. Blazelion is dead." Barleyslash sighed. Noble's posture changed immediately. He was suddenly rigid, lips curled back in a snarl, tail lashing. "What!?"

Nettlesting, from where she had obviously been eavesdropping from a few feet over, leaped to her paws. "It must of been the rogues I scented earlier this moon! Tawnyfall was with him, right? How is she?"

Noble didn't give Barleyslash time to answer. "YOU SCENTED ROGUES AND DIDN'T TELL ME!?" Nettlesting looked shock by his outbursts. "I - I thought they would pass by, like any sensible rogue."

Noble was fuming. "You." He growled. "And me. Little talk later." Then he spun around without looking at Barleyslash and stalked into his den. For once, Nettlesting looked scared.

Cranekit and Sunkit were not scrambling up to Barleyslash. "Why was My Lord yowling?" Cranekit inquired, their small tail flicking worriedly. "Are you okay?" Sunkit also asked the same time. "Hush little ones." Barleyslash whispered. "Where is your mother?" The two kits pointed towards the nursery entrance, out of which Mantasting was hurrying. As she approached Cranekit, Sunkit, and Barleyslash, she looked at the molly worriedly. "What happened to make Our Lord so mad?"

Barleyslash gave a small sigh. "A rogue group Nettlesting didn't warn us about attacked Tawnyfall and Blazelion." Mantasting froze. "No." She whispered, catching on immediately. "Blazelion was dead when I found him, and Tawnyfall unconscious." Barleyslash continued. A pause. The quiet words that she knew would not console: "I'm sorry."

at the river, three cats turned into five. "who've we got here?" archshadow hummed. the sharp pain in his front left paw seared up into his shoulder; how would he explain this one?

"pearblossom, at your service," the she-cat hummed, coming to a comfortable position on her haunches.

"waspwing, sir," the smallest cat mewed, grinning happily at the long-haired tom. his grin faltered as his eyes landed on the blood soaked patch of fur just above the tom's paw. "you alright there?" at this, archshadow finally glanced down at the wound, thinking to himself. he slowly nodded his head.

"i'm alright, thanks," for a moment, everyone was silent. "what's next, coach?" cavernstar looked up from the blood-stained fur and grinned.

"we take our new members to camp and get them comfortable. we've got a lot to do to prepare for the highstreams." the tom nodded at the group around him and then headed towards the dens. it'd take them a bit of time to trek from the eastern border to the northwestern dens. the dens were located on the highest point in the camp, above water level and packed carefully into the side of the mountain to protect from the valley winds and predators. looking back, the leader paused. "you guys coming, or what?"

"yeah but, sir, er, cavernstar, what's a highstream? i've never heard of such a thing." waspwing stumbled forward, nearly tripping over his own paws as he caught up to his new leader. "why must we prepare for it?"

continuing towards the dens with his clan in tow, cavernstar hummed softly. "the base of our camp is the second lowest point in our camp, the first being that eastern border where the river is. during leafbare, when the snow falls, the highest parts of the mountains get the most snow and it lasts the longest because it gets colder the farther up you go," he paused, taking a moment to look back. "so the snow and the ice builds up, right? then during newleaf, when the air warms up, we dry out pretty fast down here and the river doesn't grow. however, the tops of the mountains begin to melt and we get more rain. the rain and the melting ice and snow combined create floodwaters that damage the camp and cause the river to creep up the bank and into camp."

for a moment, waspwing sputtered quietly to himself, before asking cavernstar another question. "yes, so it's the water from the sky and the mountains meeting? how do we prepare for that?" realistically, there wasn't much the clan could do to prepare for the highstreams.

"we have to carry the fresh kill from the center and bring it into the extra den above the healer's den. the dens are at a slight angle on the inside, right at the entrances, which prevents the waters from flowing up into the den. as you come to get used to the dens, you'll realize that they don't just jut into the mountain, they jut upwards and then inwards," cavernstar stopped again, gazing upwards at the mountain they were heading towards. "they're built this way to prevent the flooding. you'll see soon, waspwing, i promise."

little brother, open your eyes. look me in the face and show me your true colors. you and i are more alike that you think.

cavernstar woke with a jolt, eyes adjusting to the darkness of his den. a soft breeze just barely lifted the ferns at the entrance, creating a soft rustling sound that almost seemed to bring the young leader peace. a sigh fell from his jaws. as he stood, young joints crackled and stretched with each step towards the den entrance. peering out, cavernstar hummed softly into the breeze. upon exiting the den, the young tom caught sight of his deputy up above the dens, her eyes carefully scrounging the camp below her. with a huff, he leaped up onto the overhang.

"you're up mighty early." the she-cat kept her eyes trained on something in the distance, holding an unwavering gaze. the tom only nodded, attempting to follow her gaze.

"i could say the same for you, magpieflight. i am, perhaps, meant to be awake at nearly all times." his gaze fell to his paws as bits and pieces of his dream filtered into his memory. bucktrail had looked so real- so vivid that perhaps he could reach out and press their cheeks together in greeting.

"a penny for your thoughts?" magpieflight mewed, her once trained gaze now resting upon her leader. "we're meant to be able to trust each other, you know."

the tom nodded, "i know. telling others about things like... like this is going to prove to be difficult, magpieflight. sometimes stories like this feel better kept to oneself, you know?" for a long while, neither of the cats said anything. they had fallen into what felt like a comfortable silence before the she-cat broke it.

"i understand. but we're meant to be confidants, i'm sure of it, cavernstar." for a moment, the pair shared a knowing look. she was right, in a way. for once, magpieflight's hesitancy to speak up was nowhere to be found. in its place, a fierce loyalty that spoke louder than fear itself.

"i- i agree, magpieflight. so let me tell you something to start, and perhaps one day soon i'll get further into it, yeah?" the tom paused, gathering himself. "i wasn't always.. called cavernstar. of course, i had my traditional name, cavernfall, but for a long period of time, the cats that i surrounded myself with chose to ignore it." he stopped again, chuckling to himself at the cheesy nickname. "they called me rocky. i ran with a nomadic rogue pack back a few moons. it got really dangerous, being with them did, so i left and shortly after, i founded spruceclan. my point is, i have a lot of dreams about the pack. i have a lot of dreams about my brother, too, and i'm not sure what that means for us."

"what's your brother got to do with anything? what importance does he hold?"

"i'm not sure," he sighed. "i just know the dreams of bucktrail aren't good. i'll.. i'll tell you more about him soon, swear it." this was a promise, and he never broke promises.

"sometimes i question my power," magpieflight blurted, blinking rapidly. "i mean- sometimes i wonder why i was chosen to be your deputy. i don't have any experience and growing up they all told me i was too naive and too soft to make it this far." a confession. perhaps they truly were confidants.

"but here you are."

"but here i am."

once again, a comfortable silence fell between the two. for the first time since meeting, cavernstar and his deputy were given the privilege to call each other 'friend.'

✫✫✫✫

by the time the sun finally came up, the entire clan was awake. with the addition of raptorgaze, badgerbelly, and shrikethorn, it'd be safe to say that spruceclan was slowly but surely beginning to grow and thrive. the extra help was a plus, too, with the highstreams pouring down from the mountaintops and the hilly regions. their valley had become muddy and, well, wet. the process of drying out their dens was exhausting and diligent work. despite the dens being at an angle, the water always managed to seep into the dens and soak the ferns and moss. this meant that cats were tasked with finding new material to soften their dens with, each cat responsible for their own space. under cavernstar's careful watch, things ran smoothly among the spruceclan cats. soon, though, it was time for him to make his way to the great cave.

the trip to the great cave was never a pleasant one. cavernstar could tell he was getting close by the way the trees slowly began to look less and less alive. the great cave was tucked away in a small valley, where a hole had begun to crumble inwards on the side of the mountain. with deep caverns and a plethora of dead ends, the great cave was a force to be reckoned with. getting lost was no difficult feat, but cavernstar could feel the energy of the water, even from his den. the cats of starclan and their desire to meet with the young leader always presented themselves as an almost magnetic energy, determined to pull him directly to them.

he could tell that the pool was right around the corner with the gentle glow. the colors seemed to get brighter and brighter with each step closer, until the blues and the purples and the soft golds were almost blinding. with a deep breath, cavernstar entered the great cave, the lights immediately dimming once the entirety of his body was stood before the glistening water. the gentle sound of water dripping into the pool was the only noise as cavernstar came into contact with the ground. ripples formed around his right paw as he submerged it into the warm spring. the cave suddenly became still and silent.

Newleaf- An apprentice breaks away from the patrol and jumps over a log, letting out a startled screech when they land in water. The warriors hurry forward to see what the commotion is and are equally shocked to see that the apprentice is standing in water up to their belly. With the snow officially having melted away, all that is left behind is the water that will now flood the territories for most of Newleaf, if not the rest of it. The Clans will be more likely to find water-logged or drowned prey. It's not the freshest but it'll be something.

The distant mountain realm of The Cherry Empire is secluded and hidden from its neighbors. The cats of the Empire are noble, close-knit, and proud, but as unique, deep, and varied as the land in which they live. Mist falls like rain over the valley of The Empire, and in the trees and deepest grottos, the mist seems to whisper and sing as it sifts through the needles, and over the stones and high rocks which house an ancient order long preceding any living cat.

Over a hundred years ago the Empire met its end in a volcanic eruption, when the very mountains that protected them became their captor, condemning them to doom. A handful of scattered survivors - outside the valley when it happened - remained, and have kept the culture alive for generations: passed from parent to child as their heritage. Now a century later, a cat and her mate has resurrected this ancient order and restored its ways and traditions to the land.

Emperor or Emperess: The supreme leader of the empire. Only one, the direct heir of the former emperor, has nine lives. Their mate enjoys special responsibilities and a lot of respect.
Advisor: The second-in-command. Almost always previously a warrior, very skilled in the art of very and incredibly smart in terms of strategy and other such duties. Relied upon by the Emperor or Emperess to make sound decisions, but the Advisor will never become Emperor unless the current regent has no remaining heir or family members fit to inherit the throne.
Princes and Princesses: Heirs to the throne. Only the firstborn are considered eligible.
The High Council: Four cats that represent the very top of their class in The Empire’s culture. They are treated with respect and are directly in charge of assigning those they precede over to various tasks.
Shadows: A normal rank in the Empire. The scouts and sentries of the Elpire, they carry messages, act as envoys, and earn the Empire of danger, often running ahead of patrols to clear the way and sometimes sleeping in the forest to make sure the borders are secured even at night.
Tigers: The warriors of the clan, Tigers go to battle and fend off threats from the empire. Their training is entirely based off of strength and personal honor.
Rivers: The Empire’s Lore-keepers, wisefolk, and healers. Rivers are respected for their knowledge and wisdom, and the opinion of one may be valued above another cat of the same rank. They keep the culture, commune with spirits, and enforce tradition, all the while making sure the empire is healthy and happy.
Weasels: The Empire’s hunters. They must be nimble, quick, and fast on their feet, with being solely responsible for the food-gathering of the empire. They know which animals are scared and which are not, and often smell of the forest.
Apprentices: Normal clan hierarchy.
Queens: Normal clan hierarchy.
Kits: Normal clan hierarchy.
Elders: Normal clan hierarchy.

It's newleaf, and the snow is finally melting! Prey will be more plentiful, kittings will run smoother, and you'll have a higher chance of finding cats on patrol. However, the chance of flooding - especially in low territories or territories near water - is significantly higher.

The medicine cat's den felt crowded. Badgerstar had run hard to make it to EchoClan, and he'd run even harder on the way back. The black tom looked exhausted, hunched over and shaking as Maplefall pressed up against his shoulder and groomed his ears lovingly. Across from him, a worried looking Lionheart leaned on an equally concerned Ashenstrike. Goldleaf, Spidernose and Mousestone sat in a line, each looking tense, and a bleary-eyed Longriver faced off from them.
"Lionheart was right," Badgerstar said, sounding numb, "EchoClan is sick, very sick. I talked to Crowcloud- their medicine cat- for a short time before I came back. I can't help them any, but they need medical expertise. Raggedstar seems to be the only one who isn't affected by the illness in some way, but he's... he's not doing well. EchoClan is our oldest ally and we must help them, but I warn you, this disease is not one any of us have ever seen before."
"I'll go," Spidernose said, stepping forward, "it's dangerous, but I can do it. You need Goldleaf and Mousestone here, I-"
"No, absolutely not." Spidernose rounded on Goldleaf with a glower as she shook her head. "I have the experience, Goldleaf, and I've seen some unfortunate things. If anything happens... it won't be so great a loss."
"I don't know you, I don't trust you," the she-cat said, getting to her feet, "Mousestone will go. Don't argue with me on this one. She's the best choice. She's already shown that she can keep her head under pressure and if the disease is unidentified... then I know Mousestone can keep people calm, heal them and figure out how to cure this illness all at the same time. It's admirable that you're willing to sacrifice your life for this clan, but I can't trust you with something of this magnitude. Not yet."
"It's a discredit to the moons of service I have under my belt, Goldleaf," he snapped, taking a step closer as the cameo molly also closed in on him, "I was the sole medicine cat of my clan for a long time, and forgive me Mousestone because I'm sure you're capable, but she's still so young-"
"Young and a longstanding member of this clan," Goldleaf sighed, shaking her head, "Spidernose, this is final. Mousestone earned her warrior name for her capacity to act during a crisis, but that's not the only reason I want her to go. I haven't known you for long enough to feel confident in your abilities, and this is not the time for me to give you a trial by fire. For one, EchoClan territory is harsh and with your leg you'd be as much a hindrance as a help. On top of that, the cats of the clan don't know you. They know Mousestone. I know she can pick out a convoy that will follow her orders. I'm sorry, but this is final. Understood?" Spidernose looked away, glaring at the floor.
"Understood," he said, finally. Goldleaf nodded, glanced at Mousestone. "Good. Do you think you're up to this?"
"If it's shaken Badgerstar this much, then no. But I took an oath and I will do everything in my power to help EchoClan, I promise."
"That's my girl," Goldleaf gave Mousestone a fond look. Longriver piped up from his spot across from the medicine cat den. "After Badgerstar gives the apprentices their warrior names, he should announce your departure. You should take at least three warriors with you. From what I can tell, you're going to need assistance, but we shouldn't force a party. Let it be volunteers."
The group ducked out of the medicine cat den, and headed toward the Leader's Tree, where most of the clan was already gathered around Fawnrunner and Stonepatch's litter. Longriver felt a silent relief that the four of them had passed their assessments. With Mousestone taking warriors to EchoClan, it would be good to have GroveClan's own defenses bolstered, in the case of emergency. He jumped as he felt a pelt brushing his own, turning to find his mate pressing up against his side with a worried and curious look.
"Everything alright?" Harrierstreak asked. Longriver nodded. "I'm okay. You'll understand what's happening soon enough." Harrierstreak nodded, touching his nose to his cheek as they settled into the semi-circle together, tails wrapped around each other protectively.
"I, Badgerstar, Leader of GroveClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to see these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your code, and I could not be prouder to recommend them to you. First, Elkpaw, step forward. Do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and defend your clan even at the cost of your life?"
"I do!"
"Then from this day on, you will be known as Elkbounce for your unbridled energy. StarClan honours your optimism, your compassion and your quick wit. Congratulations, you are a full warrior of GroveClan. Thunderpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect your clan even at the cost of your life?"
"I do."
"Then you will be known as Thunderspark, for your fiery soul. StarClan honours your strength, your determination and your loyalty. Congratulations on becoming a full warrior of GroveClan. Mistpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect your clan at the cost of your life?"
"Yes, I do."
"Then I give you the name Mistcreek, for your grace and serenity. StarClan honours your logical mind, your patience and your gentleness. Welcome, as a full warrior of GroveClan. Deerpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect your clan, even if it should cost you your life?"
"I do." Badgerstar smiled, taking a deep breath. "Then you shall be known as Deerstripe, for your pelt that aides you in your camouflage. StarClan honours your creativity, your endless kindness and your ability to problem solve. I am proud to welcome you as a warrior of GroveClan- proud to welcome all of you as warriors of GroveClan, and I'm terribly sorry that you had to wait so long for your names." A laugh rippled around the clan, before the final cheer went up for the latest warrior. Badgerstar waited until it had died down, waited until the kits had returned to their parents, before his expression became more serious.
"You have had to wait for these names because tonight, I visited our allies in EchoClan. They are wracked by an illness, and we must go to them. At dawn, Mousestone will be heading to EchoClan to assist their medicine cat Crowcloud in trying to cure the illness. She will be taking a convoy of warriors with her. I won't lie to you, this will not be an easy journey. The sickness is devastating and leaves young kits without mothers. The cats are too sick to move the corpses. You will see horrors, so those who volunteer to aide Mousestone must be strong, because she will need your loyalty." He nodded to the small she-cat, who nodded back.
"Thank you, Badgerstar. I don't wish to force anyone to come with me on this mission, but Novella, I know you are with me, for better or for worse." The black and white molly smiled, pushing through the crowd from where she had already been on her paws. The two mollies touched noses, before Novella settled beside her. "And Stonepatch... this isn't fair to ask of you after your kits just became warriors, but you were part my mentor too."
"Mousestone, I am with you." Stonepatch stood, as Fawnrunner stood quickly beside him, seeming worried. "I swore to protect this clan with my life, and this clan cannot go on without you. I will stand at your side, and I will come home to you." He turned and touched his nose to Fawnrunner's, before he touched his nose to each of his kit's foreheads. He moved forward to sit next to Mousestone on the other side.
"I'm with you," Dusklight's voice rang out clear as he stepped forward to touch noses with Mousestone. The little she-cat let out a choked laugh. "No, my friend. You have to stay here. You have an apprentice to train, and a clan to watch over while I'm gone. This is an adventure you have to sit out."
"I'm not in the habit of doing that."
"I know," Mousestone pressed their foreheads together, "please, Dusklight. This one is not for you." The grey tom hesitated for a moment, before he nodded, and turned back to the group. The clan seemed to be silent for a bit, gazes shifting between them as family member, friend, asked each other whether or not they would go. A voice rang out, drawing attention.
"If Novella goes, I go too," Archibald shouldered through the crowd to stand across from Mousestone. Novella looked concerned. "Are you sure you're ready for that?" Mousestone mewed, "After everything you saw at the kingdom, I don't want to rush you. This journey will be hard and I need your unconditional support." Archibald nodded. "I promise you, Mousestone. My sister trusts you implicitly, and so do I. You healed her scars, and you've healed mine. If you're truly still concerned, I suggest you bring Rivuletflight as well." He turned, locking eyes with the tom. Archibald's smile was fond, as Rivuletflight looked slightly bewildered. "He grounds me."
"Rivuletflight?" Lionheart prompted. Rivuletflight's expression softened into a gentle smile, before he nodded. "I'm with you, Mousestone," he said, getting to his feet to stand next to Archibald, the group facing off against the rest of the clan. Lionheart's eyes slid sideways to Longriver. "What do you think?" She mewed. The blue tom watched them, before he nodded firmly. "It's a strong group. I'd give them the all clear."
"Alright then," Mousestone said with a sigh, "meet at the medicine den tomorrow morning before dawn. We have to get to EchoClan as quickly as possible. I'm going to collect the herbs I'll take." She got up from her seat, and vanished into the medicine den. An uneasy silence fell over the clan. Novella stared after her worriedly, getting to her paws at the same time Dusklight did. "Perhaps now is not the time to dwell," he said airily, "everyone will come home because StarClan will watch over them. For now, we should celebrate four new warriors. Although I do believe they're supposed to be silent now." An easy laugh rippled around the clan, and the mood lightened significantly. When Novella's eyes tracked back toward Dusklight, he was gone. She wandered after him, toward the medicine cat den.
"Mousestone," Dusklight's voice was gentle as Novella slipped into the den, "you're my dearest friend. You know you can talk to me about what you're feeling." Mousestone turned to smile at him, and then at Novella. "I know, Dusklight. I just... I don't want to worry you."
"You've already worried me. I told you, Novella, you and I were going to have our epic coming of age story in the mountains beyond EchoClan remember?" Mousestone laughed a little, turning and launching herself at Dusklight to press up against his side. Novella moved closer and pressed up against her on the other, sandwiching her between them. "I remember," she whispered, "I just... you know there's the possibility that I won't come home. Everyone knows it. I can't make you see that, Dusklight, I just can't."
"I'm not worried," he said, voice gentle, "you're brilliant, Mousestone. And you're going to come home to me, to Dawnblossom and to Goldleaf, because I know you won't accept anything less from yourself." Mousestone pulled back to press her forehead to his, blowing out a sigh. "I'm your homing beacon, sweetheart," he said, "if you ever need a guiding light, remember I'm here at home, waiting for you to come back."
"And I will come back," she whispered.
"I know," Dusklight whispered back.

"You can't sleep, huh?" Longriver startled, turning away from where he'd been staring at the camp entrance to see Harrierstreak moving toward him. "I... no. You know me. I worry." Harrierstreak nodded, settling next to his mate so that he could lean against him. "Mousestone will be fine. She's a smart molly. So will all the others." Longriver blew out a sigh. "You know, I kind of wish you'd be mad at me for saying it was a good idea to send your sister on this mission. At least then maybe I'd be able to convince myself that my fears were founded, instead of feeling stupid for being worried." Harrierstreak chuckled.
"Do you remember when we came here?"
"Of course I did. You were so disheveled, but I thought you were the most handsome tom in the world." Longriver smiled to himself, quietly. "Back then, I didn't think we'd ever be where we are now. I was just a gangly apprentice and you were a tired older brother trying to protect his sister. Now I'm acting deputy and your sister is scarier than you are." Harrierstreak laughed, nudging his shoulder a little.
"Mousestone was so afraid," Harrierstreak said, "I was trying to be so strong for her, but I was afraid too. We lost our home, our family. Maybe it wasn't such a loss for her because my mother had all but abandoned her at that point, but... she needed me to pretend things were alright. That things were going to be okay. You made it easier then, you know? Whenever you were around, I felt it. I genuinely believed that we were going to get through it."
"You've come a long way since then."
"Sometimes, I believe that," Harrierstreak said with a nod, "but the truth is, I'm afraid now. Goldleaf has helped Mousestone grow into the most... amazing molly in the world. I never thought I'd see my little sister as this rowdy, confident she-cat who could take the ears off of anyone who sassed her, who can heal anything, who can patch cats up in the middle of a battle without batting an eye. But that's who she is, and I couldn't be prouder. I know she doesn't need me to worry for her, but at the end of the day, she's still my little sister. And I do worry. But I know that's also not what she needs right now. She needs me to pretend that everything's alright, and that everything is okay. She needs it so she knows she's coming home. And so I'm strong for her. And I'm strong for you too, the love of my life. But I do fear for her, and that is not your fault."
"I hate when you make sense," Longriver leaned against his mate, "but you can always lean on me. Harrierstreak, I love you so much, and I'm here for you, no matter what. If you're strong for me, I'm strong for you too."
"I know," Harrierstreak said, pressing their foreheads together, "everything's going to be fine. You'll see."

𝕥𝕠𝕕𝕒𝕪,
"If you don't mind my saying so, Spidernose, you seem kind of sour today," the black tom glared at the pointed one, who was standing a few tail-lengths away from where he was harvesting herbs. "Most cats mind if you just outright insult their temperament," Spidernose snapped, which made Sootface chuckle. "Oh, terribly sorry then. That was my attempt at a lead in to an offer to share what's on your mind."
"Nothing."
"Well that seems awful as well," Sootface said, feigning shock, "I was lead to believe medicine cats were meant to be beacons of knowledge. Seems inefficient to have a medicine cat with nothing in his brain." Spidernose glowered at him again, forcing away the amusement that tried to bubble in his chest. "Are you always this annoying?"
"Yes," Sootface said with a nod, "I learned it from the best. And by the best, I mean Ashenstrike." When Spidernose didn't laugh, Sootface's smile didn't waver. It turned a little gentler, as he tilted his head. "Look... I get what it's like to be new to the clan, okay? Did anyone ever tell you how I came here?" Spidernose shook his head. "I didn't care to ask."
"Ashenstrike and I came from the same clan, originally. Only, there he was called Stormgaze. I guess you could say we were close, considering he was my mentor and all that... so. I felt like I knew him pretty well. Anyway, one day cats started dying under mysterious circumstances. It was pretty clear they were being murdered, but they were good at covering their tracks, until one night, one of their targets didn't die. Ashenstrike must have been getting suspicious, because the murderer started spending more and more time with him, trying to get him alone. When the target recovered, they gave us a name- Lynxtooth, Ashenstrike's brother. Someone said they'd seen them leaving the camp together. When the party found Lynxtooth... he was dead, and Ashenstrike was nowhere to be found."
"That's awful," Spidernose said, feeling his gut turn unhappily at the thought of murders. "It was. We assumed Lynxtooth had killed Ashenstrike, and he'd found somewhere peaceful to die. And then CragClan split apart. I found my way to GroveClan, and was surprised to find him there, going by a different name. I accidentally forced him to admit he thought he'd murdered his brother in cold blood, which effectively alienated him from the rest of the clan so... a great first impression, I'd say."
"How'd that get cleared up?" Spidernose asked, tilting his head. "The way most things do," Sootface stretched, "time. Some cats held grudges for a bit because they felt I'd hurt him, but we made our peace and we're okay now. It... took them a bit to acclimatize, but I guess my moral lesson for you, Spidernose, is that things won't change if you force yourself away from the clan. I heard what happened to you in your old one, but... GroveClan is like a family. We stick together. You don't want to ostracize yourself from that."
"Don't I?"
"I don't want you to." Spidernose felt his pelt heat as he ducked his head, looking away. "I just... Goldleaf. She's so difficult!"
"Yep," Sootface laughed, "that's our Goldleaf. I know it's probably odd to come here, used to having all the power but... you'll see. Goldleaf has a hard facade but she cares a lot. I know it feels like an insult, but she's right that Mousestone was the advantageous choice to send to EchoClan. Goldleaf cares about this clan implicitly. It'll take her time, but if you're willing to work hard and be open with her, she'll come to trust you. It's not an insult to your personal skill, I swear."
"She is... very talented." Spidernose grumbled. Sootface laughed, like tinkling bells. "There we go, buddy."
"Oh, we're friends, are we?" Sootface grinned at him. "Yeah. You seem like you could use one of those."

"She should be here," Midnightpaw turned from where he was staring across the western border. Surely, he wouldn't see Hornetpaw on the day of his warrior assessment, but Midnightpaw couldn't help but feeling as if Hornetpaw was growing distant from him. Normally, this wouldn't be such an issue, but considering Midnightpaw had realized perhaps a moon ago that his feelings for Hornetpaw went beyond 'friendship', it was quite troubling.
"Sorry?" He got to his paws, padding across to where his sister was standing. The pair of them had placed their stones in the basin already, but Juniperpaw had been staring into it balefully. "Twilightkit," Juniperpaw said, "she should have been here with us. It's not fair." Midnightpaw was silent for a long beat. "I know." He paused, and then looked around. "But she is with us, you know. We carry her in our hearts, and sometimes I think I hear her on the wind."
Juniperpaw watched as her brother scurried around the top of the cliff for a bit, before he dragged another dark stone from the riverbank. It was similar to his own, but with a splash of algae across it that looked almost like a star. "This one is hers," Midnightpaw said. Juniperpaw smiled at her brother, and nodded. He dropped it into the basin, and the siblings sat close together, in silence.
There was still time. Still time in the Newleaf day to catch the prey they needed to complete their warrior assessments. Somehow, the moment felt right, bathed in the sunlight, watching it glitter off the pile of stones that represented each of the cats in GroveClan.
"Congratulations, Twilightwing," Juniperpaw whispered, "you're a warrior of GroveClan now."

"Badgerstar," Woodbloom mewed as the dark coloured tom ducked into the nursery. He startled a little bit, watching as the young queen got to her feet and hurried toward him. "Thank StarClan, I was just about to come find you." Badgerstar noticed Jayfur with his head bowed, murmuring quietly to his kits while a tense looking Silvermoon sat beside him, Flintburr at her shoulder.
"What's happened?"
"Jayfur has been telling us about what's happening in HazeClan," she said, eyes flickering with fury, "the new leader- Buzzardstar- he's nuts. Jayfur was saying he considers half-blood cats traitors to the clan and he's been trying to 'cleanse' their ranks of cats who aren't of full HazeClan blood. Jayfur and some of the other warriors rounded up a few at-risk cats and moved them nearer to our border but it's just... it's awful."
"That is awful," Badgerstar said, frowning, "I knew something was going on. Does anyone know if Redstar knows about this?" The den was silent as the cats glanced among each other. Badgerstar blew out a breath. "QuickClan is close to HazeClan. There might be cats with families there. When Longriver comes back, I'll send him to see Redstar with the news. Jayfur, if you could go with him to explain what you've seen, that would be a great help."
"We can't do anything else?" Woodbloom asked, looking worried. Badgerstar shook his head. "HazeClan is a lot bigger than us, and I don't know how many HazeClan cats would be willing to follow us if we 'liberated' them. I think we just have to wait this out and help from the shadows as much as we can. The HazeClan cats that Jayfur and the others are hiding are welcome on GroveClan territory. If we could get names, that would be fantastic. I'll get word around the warriors that those cats are to come to no harm, and are to be considered a part of GroveClan until it's safe for them to return to their own."
"A good plan," Lionheart mewed, "should we send word to Tawnyrose as well? If something happens, it would be good to have allies prepared to help us should HazeClan attack." Badgerstar shook his head. "No, Tawnyrose and I have a mutual agreement. It's no military treaty by a long shot, but I won't risk our alliance by asking her to stick her neck out for a threat that hasn't actually arisen yet. We wait. If it comes to that- which I pray to StarClan it won't- we defend on our own. We have a lot of capable warriors with a lot to fight for."
"It'd be the trial by fire Spidernose seems to be wanting," said Maplefall, but no one laughed. "I'd feel better if Mousestone was here," she said after a few moments, and everyone nodded. Woodbloom cast a look back at her kits, and then smiled at Badgerstar. "I'm sure everything will be alright. HazeClan can handle their own. And besides, all these frowny faces will make the kits upset. Come on, girls, why don't you come visit the elders with your father and I?"
Woodbloom's kits erupted into cheers as they bounced around their mother's paws. Badgerstar nodded to Jayfur as he passed and told him he would find him later. As the calls of the six boisterous kits faded, silence descended over the nursery again. Badgerstar looked up, feeling Flintburr's keen eyes on his face.
"I don't like this," he said, and Badgerstar sighed.
"I know. But Mousestone's convoy will be back from EchoClan soon enough, and I'm sure HazeClan has cats to handle their own drama. For now, all we can do is wait." The sentiment did not seem to comfort anybody, and silence descended over the nursery once again.

Last Moon
Galapaw cleared her head after her conversation with Spottednose by visiting the Burial Site. She raked up the remainder of the dead leaves and clawed out weeds poking out in between flowers sprouting. Soon her paws were clogged with dirt and sore to the touch. She carefully made her way towards the creek where she could clean off her hard work. As soon as her mind wasn’t preoccupied with busy work, her thoughts drifted back to Blossomfall. Her favorite part of the days was always sharing a meal with the warrior and discussing the latest patrols. Medicine cats can have friends outside of just the other medicine cat! Galapaw thought angrily. But then she thought of all the secret looks and smiles they shared, and how her heart ached every time Blossomfall did something sweet for her. Were they really only just going to stay friends? But how could she give up her medicine cat status? She had devoted her time both in LambClan and now in TwistedClan to becoming the best medicine cat she could be. Spottednose now gave her more compliments then reprimands, and the younger cats felt more comfortable with her around than only the moody Spottednose. And I would be Galalight, Galapaw thought.

Blossomfall hummed to herself as she swept some dirt off of the cabin front. Flamepaw and Honeypaw were dusting out the inside of the cabin while rest of the younger apprentices carried out the old and musty bedding. As she had a coughing fit from the dirt swirling around, Galapaw leaped up on the landing behind her. “Can we talk?” Galapaw whispered.
Blossomfall sneezed. “Of course.” They squeezed into a corner where they wouldn’t be interrupted.
“I am going to receive my medicine cat name next moon.” Galapaw started.
“That’s great!” Blossomfall purred.
“It is, but that brings me to my next point.” Galapaw paused. “I can’t fall in love with you. I have a choice, and I need to make it.”
“Why can’t we have both?” Blossomfall hated how she sounded whiny. “It won’t affect your medicine cat duties at all.”
“It will.” Galapaw sighed. “I wish it didn’t, but it will.”
“Shouldn’t I get a say in this?”
“I’m really sorry,” Galapaw met her eyes. “but no.”

Nightpaw was sitting in the back of the cluster of cats, stifling a cough. It was enough that Ruststripe had to drag him out from under the water during the lesson, but now he was getting ill. A sharp prod interrupted his negative thoughts. Spottednose jabbed his tail towards the medicine cat den. Nightpaw took the hint and followed him back to the herb store. The medicine cat shoved a leaf towards him. “Eat this.” Spottednose instructed.
“A leaf?” Nightpaw rasped. “There must be something else that’s actually edible.”
“This is perfectly fine to eat. It’ll help your throat.”
“I’d rather have a cough, thanks.”
“You’ll spread it around. If I grab honey instead will you stop complaining and leave?”
“Sure.”

Present
Rainsong sat with her three kits outside behind the cabin. They were basking in the nice weather, and Sunchaser for once sat next to her without much complaints. “They’re starting to move around better,” Sunchaser said as Dovekit rolled over to bat at Patchkit.
“They are.” Rainsong snuck a glance at the tom. He seemed to be enjoying watching the kits. “Soon I’ll take them so their father can see them.” The tom tense, but Rainsong had expected that.
“Are you serious?” Sunchaser asked. “It’s enough that one is named…”
“I promised.” Rainsong interrupted. “And no one will know any better. We’ll just go for a walk together and…”
“We?”
“I was going to ask if you could help me. I do really appreciate what you are doing for us.” Rainsong tried to sweet talk him.
“I see.” Sunchaser was distracted by Patchkit batting his tail with his sharp claws. He flicked it back and forth as Patchkit tried to pin it to the ground. Dovekit and Petalkit soon joined in on this game, and Sunchaser was soon overwhelmed by tiny claws and fangs. Rainsong chuckled, enjoying herself for the first time in a while. Sunchaser gently knocked them away, and they soon got distracted by chirping beetles in the dirt. “Do you still love him?” Sunchaser asked very quietly while staring hard at the ground in front of him.
“I’ll always love him,” Rainsong said. “but I’m not in love with him anymore.”
“Good.” Rainsong took a chance and rested her tail over his. He didn’t move it, and they watched the kits play in the dirt.

“Wake up, sleepyhead.” Morningstar whispered in her mate’s ear. “All the prey will already be caught if we don’t get out there.” Ruststripe rolled to his feet and the two left the camp in the early morning sunshine. “It’s a nice day to be running around.”
“It’s always a nice day when I’m around you.” Ruststripe said cheekily.
“It’ll be even nicer when I tell you the good news!” Morningstar said.
“Don’t keep me in suspense!” Ruststripe had an inkling as to what the news would be and couldn’t wait.
“I’m expecting kits.” Morningstar turned to him. He nuzzled her in delight.
“Now it’s an amazing day!” Ruststripe purred. “But are you still going to the Moonpool later? Shouldn’t you stay here?”
“I’ll be fine going on a walk.” Morningstar assured him. “I still have my legs.”
“If you say so,” Ruststripe paused. “We need to tell someone! This is wonderful.”
Morningstar laughed. “I’ll let you break the news to the Clan then. Wolfclaw already agreed to take over some leadership duties while I’m in the nursey.”
“You told Wolfclaw before me?” Ruststripe exclaimed.
“Wolfclaw wasn’t asleep.” Morningstar poked him. “I promise he’s the only one I told. Well, Spottednose knows obviously, but that’s it.”
Ruststripe sighed dramatically. “I guess that’s fine.” They chuckled. “Now let’s go tell the others.”

Spottednose knew that Galapaw had been avoiding him over the past few nights leading up to his Moonpool visit. He still was not sure if his apprentice was going to continue on her medicine cat path or step down to stay with Blossomfall. Morningstar was also coming along to the Moonpool to ask StarClan for an elder and to hopefully witness Galapaw’s ceremony. The sun was starting to sink towards to the horizon after the warm day. Morningstar approached Spottednose. “Isn’t Galapaw supposed to be accompanying us?”
“She is around here somewhere.” Spottednose stalled. “She has been very busy lately running around, doing last minute errands for me, and checking on the nursery…” Thankfully, he was saved from rambling on with other excuses by Galapaw sprinting up.
“I’m ready to go to the Moonpool.” Galapaw coughed out. Spottednose tilted his head expectantly. “Yes, I’m ready to go.” She confirmed.
“Perfect. On we go.” Spottednose nudged her along, and Morningstar limped along beside them. “Have you had many dreams lately?” He breached the topic with the calico.
“Any specific dreams?” Morningstar asked. “I have chased a squirrel or two without my back paw bothering a few nights ago but nothing special comes to mind.” Spottednose didn’t know what to think about that.
“Then what have you been dreaming?” Morningstar pressed.
“Nothing special.” Spottednose said quickly.
“Galapaw? Is that the truth?” Morningstar’s tone was light but had a sinister undertone to it.
“Uh,” Galapaw didn’t know how to respond.
“I take that as a ‘no’, then.” Morningstar looked at Spottednose. “What have you really been dreaming?”
“I’m hoping to figure that out myself tonight.” Spottednose said. “My dreams have not been the most pleasant lately consisting of snarling and the scent of decay.”
“I would count that as something ‘special’ and important to tell me.” Morningstar flicked him with her tail. “Understand?”
“Yes.” Spottednose was the first to leap up onto the rocky outcropping and ducked under the overhanging boulder to squeeze into the passageway that led to the Moonpool. Galapaw was close behind with Morningstar taking a bit more time with her twisted paw. Spottednose waited for the two others at the dazzling Moonpool. The moon was still rising, so they had time to finish the medicine cat ceremony first. “Galapaw, are you ready?”
“I’m ready.” Galapaw stood face-to-face with her mentor.
“Then I, Spottednose, medicine cat of TwistedClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat, and with your help she will serve TwistedClan for many moons. Galapaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to protect all cats equally even at the cost of your life?”
“I do.”
“Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your true name as a medicine cat. Galapaw, from this moment on you will be known as Galalight. StarClan honors your values and kind nurturing attitude, and we welcome you as a full medicine cat of TwistedClan.” Spottednose let her rest her muzzle on his shoulder.
“Congratulations, Galalight!” Morningstar purred.
“I’m proud of you, Galalight.” Spottednose murmured. “Though, you are still technically my apprentice.” He added louder.
“Thank you.” Galalight whispered.
“Ready?” Morningstar already laid by the Moonpool. She was anxious to go to sleep to get some answers.
“Yes.” Spottednose sat beside her but allowed the leader to touch the Moonpool first.
“Are you worried what StarClan might say?” Galalight asked.
“I’m worried that they might not say anything.” Spottednose muttered. He and his apprentice touched their noses into the Moonpool. Spottednose soon blinked open his eyes and took in the magical starry forest that was StarClan. He would never tire of visiting. Galalight awoke behind him.
“Where’s Morningstar?” She stretched.
“Over here.” Spottednose spun around. He hadn’t heard that voice in a long time.
“Stormstrike?” Spottednose took in the sight of his old friend standing by Morningstar. He looked exactly like he used to, and it was strange to talk to him once more. “Why haven’t you spoke to me sooner?” He felt slightly betrayed. It had been nine moons since Stormstrike had passed, and Spottednose hadn’t heard a single word from the warrior.
“I’m sorry.” Stormstrike said. “It wasn’t the right time.”
“Not the right time?” Spottednose shook his head. “I find that hard to believe.”
“Dark times are approaching, Spottednose.” Stormstrike stepped closer to the two medicine cats. Galalight stepped backwards, unsure, but Spottednose stood nose to nose with his old friend. “A storm is coming, ready to swallow TwistedClan.”
“If you waited until now to tell me, you better be more specific.” Spottednose said.
“ᴛʜᴇ ʀᴀɢɪɴɢ ғᴏᴀᴍ ᴡɪʟʟ sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟɪᴋᴇ ғɪʀᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ʙᴏɪʟ ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ғᴇᴀʀ” Stormstrike said. “Be ready.” He touched noses with Spottednose. “Tell my kits I’m excited that they’re apprentices now.” Before any of the cats could respond, the dream started to fade to black, and they woke back up next to the Moonpool.
“Was that a prophecy?” Galalight asked quietly.
“I believe it was.” Morningstar looked at Spottednose.
“StarClan help us.”

Nightpaw had a new orange and white shadow. Flamepaw volunteered to join the same patrols as him and made sure he was picked to assist with the same apprentice chores. Nightpaw wasn’t sure what to think of this development. It did make it easier for him to practice fighting moves as he always had a willing volunteer. “Okay, now you attack me first.” Nightpaw crouched, leveling the remainder of his tail for balance.
“How should I attack?” Flamepaw asked crouching as well.
Nightpaw stood up exasperated. “I’m not going to tell you since that would ruin the…” Flamepaw sprung at him in the middle of his sentence. The two rolled in the dirt; Flamepaw latched on to Nightpaw’s chest while Nightpaw battered his belly with his back paws. Nightpaw threw Flamepaw off and shook his head to get rid of the dirt.
“Did I surprise you?” Flamepaw asked excitedly.
“Yes, it was very good.” Nightpaw was impressed and annoyed at himself. “Where’d you learn how to jump like that anyway?”
“I used to live around the Two-legs’ nests. They had giant stone structures that I liked to climb on to overlook their entire camp. Some of the highest ones were way taller than any tree I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t jump to the top of those ones, but I could still figure out how to get pretty high.” Flamepaw cleaned his ears. “Where’d you live before this?”
Nightpaw shuffled his feet. He hadn’t ever talked about his past before, and it made him uncomfortable. The past was the past so why did it matter? “I don’t know. Just wherever my sister and I wanted to go.”
“You have a sister?” Flamepaw asked.
Nightpaw chastised himself. He didn’t mean to share that. “Yeah, I used to. A dog got to her.”
“I’m sorry.” Flamepaw rested his tail on Nightpaw’s shoulders. “I don’t remember if I ever had any family. I guess I do, but I only grew up alone and fighting for scraps with the other rouge cats.”
“It’s better to have no ties.” Nightpaw shrugged. “It’s easier to get over problems if they arise.”
“I would have to disagree. I think it’s easier to deal with problems with someone you trust.” Flamepaw said.
“And what if the cat you trust is the problem?”
“You find another. Eventually.”

Briarwhisper, Stonefrost, Toadsplash, and Claystream waded out in the creek. The unforgiving sun was beating down on the forest and the cooling water rushing past them was a relief. Stonefrost dipped under the water quick to cool off his head. Briarwhisper looked at him like he was crazy. “See for yourself.” Stonefrost dunked her mostly under the surface of the water. She came up sputtering.
“Hey!” She protested.
“It’s much cooler if you’re all wet.” Stonefrost shrugged. Toadsplash swam under the surface, batting at fish. “Toadsplash has the right idea.”
“Why do you think both of us have water names?” Claystream said. “We were some of the better swimmers of GraveClan.”
“I never had a reason to swim.” Briarwhisper made sure to keep her head firmly above the water now. “I might just prefer to stay hot.”

Wolfclaw had already delegated the day’s patrols and was now sharing a piece of thrush with Silverstem. “I’m excited Morningstar is finally having kits,” The queen was saying. “I know Ruststripe was really hoping for a chance of becoming a father.”
“It’s easy being a father. They don’t have to do the hard work.” Wolfclaw said offhandedly.
“Oh, please. Having kits is almost the easy part. The making sure they stay safe is the hard part.” Silverstem grew quiet.
“I’m sure it is.” Wolfclaw nudged her. “I never had the pleasure of being a father. Or knowing Pebblepaw.”
“He was very excited to become an apprentice.” Silverstem leaned into the tom.
“Would you ever consider having more kits?” Wolfclaw whispered.
Silverstem intertwined her tail with his. “Maybe one day.”

Mallardwing snuck behind a sulking Blossomfall. She snagged her tail, and the black and white warrior hissed and batted at her. Mallardwing reeled back. “Don’t be so moody.” Mallardwing said.
“You’re the one who clawed me.” Blossomfall huffed.
“That’s not what I was talking about.” Mallardwing sat next to her. “You’ve been even more annoyed all moon.”
Blossomfall raked the ground. “It just isn’t fair.” She complained.
“What’s not fair?”
“None of your business.”
“That doesn’t help me.”
“I don’t need your help.”
Mallardwing hooked her claws on her fluffy tail once more. “I’m not your therapist. I wanted to tag along training Stormpaw, but if you are going to mope around for no reason then I’ll ask Wolfclaw if I can take over his training.”
“What?” Blossomfall stood up angrily. “Morningstar appointed me as his mentor not yours!”
Mallardwing shrugged. “Not if you don’t work with him.”
“Well, I am right now! Stormpaw!” Blossomfall called. The black apprentice poked his head out of the cabin. “We’re going hunting!” He excitedly scrambled towards them. Blossomfall nudged him to enter the forest, and Mallardwing tagged along behind. “Why are you following us?” She snapped.
“I’m coming with, grumpy.” Mallardwing skipped happily.
Blossomfall sighed. “Fine.”

Honeypaw, Maplepaw, and Goosepaw were collecting moss for the nursery nests. Honeypaw’s legs were sore from crouching in a hunting position all afternoon. Birchwhisker was actually pretty intimidating during training. She didn’t like it when he complained she was being too harsh either and had to stay out in the hot for longer. He raked the moss quickly, keeping some dirt on the soft underside. Goosepaw glanced at his pile. “That looks a bit messy.” He said.
“It just needs to get done.” Honeypaw was too tired to argue. “I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Goosepaw didn’t say anything else. As soon as their piles became hip high, they gathered up the moss and dragged it back to camp. When the three were distributing the moss into the separate nests, Birchwhisker came over to scrutinize their work.
“Honeypaw, put all of yours in one nest over there. Since you worked so hard, all of it will go in Morningstar’s new nest. You know how tired she is after traveling to the Moonpool last night, and she would really appreciate a comfortable nest.” Birchwhisker said. Honeypaw looked at his dirty moss pile. “Unless you would rather toss that out and go collect a better pile.”
“Okay,” Honeypaw said sheepishly. “I’ll get some more.”
“Good decision.” Birchwhisker nodded. “I’ll tell Morningstar you made her a special nest, then.” Honeypaw hurried back out to the moss laden trees. As he started collecting moss more carefully, a soft voice spoke behind him.
“I can help you,” Maplepaw offered. “If you want.”
Honeypaw was grateful for the offer. “Thanks a bunch.”
“I can tell you’re having a long day.” Maplepaw shrugged. “I would want some help if I was you.”
