"So... You guys are like a gang, right?"
Alois flicked his tail in irritation as he sighed, before glancing back to Jagdhund in exasperation. "My dear leader, please, enlighten me - why can't we just kill this idiot where he stands?"
The kittypet gasped over-dramatically as the spotted tabby she-cat rolled her eyes. "Alois, we can't simply kill everyone who sets foot in our territory. There has to be some order, you know."
"Hmph. Never thought of you as the peaceful type," Alois muttered sarcastically, letting out a short yelp as Brunhilde dug her claws into his tail. "You'll respect our leader, you rotten fleabag, or you'll pay your respects with your life!"
The kittypet eyed the two bickering cats warily, turning to face Sonje hesitantly - while she did seem like the only sane one of this bunch, he couldn't be too sure. "Uh... So can I leave now, or...?"

Sonje sighed heavily. "No - as much as I would like for this to be over, I'm afraid it's up to Jagdhund if you get to leave."
The kittypet nodded awkwardly. "Right... So Jaggy, what say you? How's about we all go our separate ways and never speak about this incident ever again? I mean, sure, we might see each other, and we could do like, a silent gesture like 'yeah I know,' but other than that, we never have to think of this awful meeting ever again!"
"For the love of StarClan, would somebody please shut him up?!" Alois groaned, to which he was silenced with a sharp glare from Jagdhund.
The leader turned towards the kittypet, narrowing her eyes slightly. "What are you doing on Schwellenangst territory? You still haven't answered my question."
"Well," the tom drawled, "I was just on a walk... But then I saw a bird! Like, a really big one! So I followed it, got lost, and ended up with you lovely folks." He beamed before adding nonchalantly, "By the way, you guys really need to work on your social skills... I mean, threatening to kill cats just because you bumped into 'em on a walk? That's a little over the top, don't you think?"

Sonje glanced over to her leader, who seemed a little more than peeved at the words coming from this kittypet, and decided to intervene. "Maybe it'd be best if you went on your way, sir," she said quietly, to which the kittypet responded with a loud, whiny, "I'm LOST! I don't know where I'm supposed to go!"
"Then why don't you go anywhere but here?!" snapped Alois furiously. The kittypet pouted. "But that's no fun! You guys are in, like... A cool gang! I wanna see what you guys are doing!"
Jagdhund inhaled a sharp breath of air before she smiled tightly. "Fine. You want to know what it's like to be a clan cat? Then follow me."
As the childish kittypet cheered, Alois rushed over to Jagdhund's side. "My leader, what are you doing?! He's an idiot! There's no way you could seriously-"
"Calm yourself, Alois," she hissed. "He wants to know what it's like to be a clan cat? We'll give him that experience. If he messes up even once, we leave him for dead. Capiche?"
Alois paused. "And if, in the slightest off-chance, he doesn't?"
"Then maybe I'll get a new War Chief," she mused. "One that doesn't sass his leader." And with a flick of her tail, she led the party back to their camp.

The harsh ring of laughter haunts the night, and Darkstar runs for her life.

The gravel jabs at her bleeding paws, but she only grits her teeth and keeps moving. She makes a sudden turn down an alleyway, sending some of her pursuers skidding awkwardly along the streets. She narrows her eyes, scanning for an escape, a way onto the rooftops, anything-

But she finds nothing, so she continues to run, rogues howling behind her. She makes another sharp turn, weaving through the alleyways, lashing her tail out of the way just before a pair of teeth snaps onto it. They’re close. Her yellow eyes close and her thoughts whirl around her – no, she was- she was fast, and she was clever, and she would be fine, she would be fine-

A pair of teeth clamp around her ankle. She screams and falls, and with a feral, victorious howl, the rogues pile on top of her. She lashes out with her teeth and claws, catching fur and tasting blood, but it’s too late. She feels tufts of her fur torn away, and claws raking down her flank and belly, and teeth crushing her windpipe.

She glares into a pair of green eyes, summoning up every scrap of hatred she has in her body. The owner of those green eyes steps back, a slight smile on his face and her blood on his muzzle. He flicks his tail, and the rogues fall back in a wave. He laughs, sharp and cruel. “There. That’ll send the message.”

He turns his back on the dying molly. Her vision is blurring, but she can still picture his face so clearly in her mind. “Guess some people need to learn the hard way what happens to traitors.” And he and the rogues leave her there, dying in the dark, a sickening whistle coming from her throat and the taste of blood bubbling up in her mouth.

She stares at the brick wall for a moment longer before her vision goes black, and Darkstar breathes her last.



When the world materializes again, it seems softer, somehow. She awakens on a silvery field crafted of starlight. Fighting off vertigo, she forces herself to her feet. “So, it’s- it’s over?” She says, stunned, to no one in particular. “Just like that?”

“Yes and no.” Answers a voice from behind her, one she could have sworn wasn’t there a heartbeat before. She spins around to face the stranger, her claws instinctively unsheathing. Yet her claws phase right through the silver grass. “You’re one of the lucky ones, you know.” She muses, seeming unfazed by Darkstar. “We can’t give everyone a second chance. Much less nine.”

She blinked, shocked. “I was so sure, I mean, I thought the nine lives thing was metaphorical, not...” She trails off, her words withering and dying in her throat. The Starclan warrior smiles at her, and it is not a warm smile. The starry she-cat simply rolls her shoulders and touches her nose to Darkstar as she says,

“This was your first chance. Don’t waste your others.”

And the world vanishes in a swirl of blue and white.


When her heart beats again, the sun has risen. She cracks her eyes open, only to shield them against the light. She feels a jolt of surprise when she realizes that her open wounds have scabbed over, and the wound on her neck is entirely gone. She pauses and steels herself, stumbling back to her feet.

That couldn’t have been a dream. It felt so real. She could still feel the phantom sensation of cold starlight brushing against her pelt, could still see the marks where her wounds had closed. Thoughts raced through her mind as she found her footing, pacing through the alleyways.

So she would have to start playing smarter, that StarClan cat said. The rogues thought she was dead – she could take advantage of that. She could build up her own group – her own clan, like the stars had said – a clan that was strong, and wise, and trustworthy, and kind. And when they were strong enough, they could rise up against the rogues and free their city. So that someday, everyone could live a life that wasn’t short and fearful and violent. So that cats could be free, and not live in fear.

She steadied herself as she once more felt blood race through her veins. Maybe she could do it, but not alone.

She needed to go to the Moonpool.

Darkstar loses a life, and has 8 remaining.

"I can't believe you two are so much closer to being warriors than me - it's not fair!" Skypaw complained as he tackled Reedpaw. Cloudpaw jumped on top of Skypaw. "Well it's because we're better, clearly!" He joked. Reedpaw huffed as she tried to claw her way out. "You know it's just because we're older, mouse-brains!" she cried from under them. When she finally got out of the pile she saw Lunarglow heading their way. "Looks like it's time we split off for now. See you fools later!" Reedpaw called behind her as she ran toward her mentor. Skypaw saw Tatteredpelt padding toward the entrance. "Looks like I better go too. Bye Cloudpaw!" he said as he got up and ran after Tatteredpelt.

"take these to redstar, then go to the nursery to check on privetfang and zinniabelly," alpinemask listed off. his back was turned to gorseberry while he spoke, though the younger medicine cat could sense the tension lingering underneath the surface. alpinemask's shoulders were hunched, his head low, and his ears were pressed back against his head. "later we'll go out and look for more herbs. we need to stock up before the snows come in."
"alright," gorseberry answered, flicking his tail while he listened. "will gullfeather be coming with us?" he asked after a moment, when alpinemask said nothing further, too set on preparing the herbs for redstar's wounds. after their leader led the patrol against the fox, alpinemask had taken over most of redstar's healing. this was the first time he sent gorseberry to redress redstar's wounds and make sure that he avoided infection.
"no," alpinemask snapped suddenly, though he turned quickly and caught gorseberry's reaction. the younger tom backed up a step, ears pricked and eyes wide. "no, she'll be staying back to help mothtail with autumnkit," he explained, tone softer. gorseberry dropped his gaze and alpinemask sighed heavily. "i'm sorry, it's just tense around here. and i know that collecting herbs used to be a special thing for you and gullfeather. you're probably tired of me, huh?" he continued, letting out a snort of laughter when gorseberry's eyes snapped up again to meet his own.
"no! it's not like that," gorseberry argued, though alpinemask shook his head slightly and chuckled once more.
alpinemask moved aside and nodded towards the pile of prepared herbs. "go on now, no use wasting the daylight while we still have it," he urged, laughing just until gorseberry was out of the den and out of earshot. then he lowered his head and cleared his throat. "alright, he's gone," he said.
gullfeather slipped from the back of the den where she had been waiting, hiding away from her former-apprentice as the day approached to give birth to her kits. "i hate hiding from him," she muttered, then looked to alpinemask. "you'll keep him busy the rest of the day?"
"of course, shouldn't be that hard," he grumbled in reply, to which gullfeather hummed softly. a moment passed in silence before he nodded to his friend, whiskers twitching. "how are you feeling?"
gullfeather licked her chest fur once, taking her time before answering. "i'm excited to have them, of course, but i'm also nervous. i can't be the mother they deserve," she admitted with a shrug of her shoulders.
"i know the feeling," alpinemask said with a sigh.
for a moment, the pair of medicine cats sat in silence before gullfeather nudged alpinemask with her shoulder. "sad that you can't be a mother?"
alpinemask rolled his eyes and his expression twisted, becoming a mixture of distaste and amusement. "no, i'm glad i can't be a mother. i meant about being what the kits deserve..." he trailed off and ducked his head.
"have you seen your kits yet, or your mate?" gullfeather asked, touching her nose to alpinemask's shoulder to try and comfort him.
"no, not yet," he breathed out, "and we're not going to stay mates. i don't love her."
"i don't love paleflick either," gullfeather murmured softly, only to let out a loud laugh which grew louder when alpinemask shot her a confused glance. "what have we gotten ourselves into? maybe starclan has cursed us all." at that, she stood and headed towards the herb storage, tails and ears pricked. "at this rate, gorseberry is the only hope we have for a medicine cat who will follow starclan's laws."

"what's his name?" patchwing asked. she was seated in the middle of the nursery, her bright green eyes flickering from where gorseberry was checking zinniabelly's nest for anything that might have scratched her in her sleep. when gorseberry sent her a sharp glance, mouth full of moss, patchwing rolled her eyes and kneaded her paws. however, she did lower her voice, more careful of waking poppyhaze or privetfang, who napped on the other side of the nursery. "fine," she hissed, "what's his name? don't make us guess." she gestured to berrypad when she spoke.
berrypad had been helping gorseberry look for a thorn or needle in the moss while patchwing pestered them both, though she sat back on her haunches at the mention of her name and dropped her moss. "don't drag me into this," she whispered back. gorseberry glanced up only long enough to watch patchwing and berrypad stare at one another, the former's green eyes burning, apearing scandalized, as if berrypad betrayed her in that moment. gorseberry snorted a laugh and his best friends looked back towards him, refocused and patchwing pressed on with renewed vigor.
"just tell us," she urged, "it's not like we'll tell anyone. you haven't looked this dreamy since you had a crush on oakseed," patchwing continued, stopping short only when berrypad cut in again.
"we said we weren't going to bring that up!" she exclaimed, only to fall silent when poppyhaze raised his head and mumbled for them to keep it down, her voice slow from sleep. even still, gorseberry caught the curious glimmer in poppyhaze's eyes, which meant she wasn't mad. but the last thing he needed was for one of the queens to catch wind of his crush on a warrior from another clan. if one queen knew, the entire clan knew. instead, he dropped the moss and tossed his head towards the entrance. "get the others if you want to know so badly," he hissed lowly, "i'm only going to say this once." with that, he turned and left the nursery.
the sunlight was strong in the main camp, shining brightly when gorseberry padded down the slope that led towards the clearing. there, several warriors were sunning themselves, taking a rest between hunting and border patrols. the older kits were cheering loudly while mulestomp and minnowjump wrestled off to one side, while snakespots spoke with oakseed and piperskip on the other side. gorseberry tipped his head to oakseed when the muscled warrior caught his eye, though gorseberry looked away quickly when he reached the ferns that framed the camp's lower entrance. it would only be a matter of time until oakseed followed and berrypad and patchwing managed to round up the rest of their group. sure enough, gorseberry had just managed to settle down in the middle the hollow where the medicine cats went to gather moss that oakseed's scent reached his nose.
the older tom's eyes glinted in gold, and gorseberry couldn't help but recall the moons he spent pining after the warrior. "hey," oakseed breathed, voice low though they couldn't be heard, "is everything okay?"
whereas gorseberry would have felt his heart rate pick up at oakseed's look of concern and gentle tone, he now was able to sit and nod once, nonchalant. "yeah," he answered, "but patchwing and berrypad have been pestering me about -"
"the amount of time you've been spending out of camp and walking around in a daze?" oakseed broke in, smiling at the offended look that crossed gorseberry's face. "yeah - we've all noticed, i just didn't have the chance to ask you yet." with a huff, gorseberry turned his face away, which earned a louder chuckle from oakseed. soon enough, paw steps could be heard, coming closer, until treespirit padded into the open. the small tom glanced between gorseberry and oakseed, his eyes wide.
"patchwing woke me up from a nap," treespirit said, his voice as small as ever, "she said it was urgent. is someone hurt?" it was only when he was assured that they were all fine that treespirit relaxed slightly and settled down between his friends, loosening up further when oakseed asked him about the dawn patrol. oakseed's voice was warm and comforting in the small hollow while the three waited for the rest of their friends to appear. while the warriors spoke, gorseberry listened in silence, finding peace in the deep tones in oakseed's voice that made even treespirit open up. the small warrior had always been shy and docile - so much so that gorseberry wondered on multiple occasions why he was a warrior, retracting his statement only after he saw treespirit hunt. he was a gentle soul, but extremely skilled, though treespirit would never boast as much. after patchwing took a liking to treespirit, he had been absorbed into their group ever since, unable to escape even if he tried. gorseberry knew the feeling.
finally, gorseberry perked up when he could hear patchwing and screechwing through the trees, "- you just had to scare the mouse, didn't you?" screechwing was complaining

THE CLAN AND CATS
clan name and explanation:

• hickoryclan
  
• hickory wood is very hard, stiff, and the combination of strength and toughness found in hickory wood is not comparable to any other commercial wood. hickoryclan cats value strength and power, so the name is rather fitting.
clan values and morals

• as stated above, hickoryclan cats value strength and power over everything else. they are not very big fans of emotion, and those who use their heart to make decisions.
• hickoryclan is a collection of intp and entj personalities.
• hickoryclan believes that death is a worthy punishment for weakness. if a loner asking to join their clan is deemed unfit for their life, they will send the cat away with a warning that if they are not off of their territory in a day, they will be killed.
• hickoryclan has more guards than hunters because they believe that one indicator of strength is the ability to withstand hunger.
• kits are not important to hickoryclan cats. they respect them as they will be future warriors, but they will kill any kits who appear weak. queens are also left to fend for themselves. there are one or two permanent queens who will hunt for any nursing queens, and their mates may help out if they can do it in secret, because hickoryclan has assigned mates and these pairings are not supposed to have feelings for each other, but queens they will not receive help from warriors and apprentices.
• hickoryclan also values individuality and devotion to a single task, so they have divided their warriors into hunters and guards, and apprentices are assigned a role to train under based on their personality, temperament, body capabilities, etc.
clan rules and traditions

• warriors are assigned mates based on appearance, ranking, and strength. every leaf bare the leader will choose any number of pairings to try for kits, and they must have a litter by the next leaf bare. if the pair fails to complete this, they will never be given the opportunity to have kits ever again, and, if they are disrespectful to the leader about it, they may be removed from their roles and sent out to the mountains to fend for themselves and no longer be welcome in hickoryclan territory.
• the hierarchy goes as follows: the leader reports to no-one, the deputy reports to the leader, the lead hunter and guard report to the deputy, the hunters and guards report to their respective lead, the medicine cat reports to the leader, apprentices report to their mentor. if this is hierarchy is broken and a cat reports to someone they are not supposed to, they be stripped from their role for a few moons and become a gatherer.
• if a kit is sentenced to death, and the parents are caught trying to hide the kit or save it somehow, they will immediately be kicked out of hickoryclan.
clan roles

• there is one leader. the leader is chosen by their predecessor, and they are deputy for many moons before becoming leader. the leader overlooks the entire clan, and are at the top of the hierarchy. the leader and their assigned mate are exempt from the kitting rule, and may have a litter whenever they please.
• following the leader, there is a deputy. the deputy is selected by the leader, and once the deputy replaces the leader they will select their own successor. during their time as deputy, they will work closely with the lead hunter and guard. they will also assist the group that they were not apart of when they were warriors- for example, if the deputy was a hunter when they were a warrior, they will help out the guards and participate in border patrols to gain experience to prepare for leadership. deputies are often significantly younger than their leaders, because they will need to have a long life ahead of them to insure a long time as leader. deputies will become leader when their predecessor loses their last life or retires due to old age.
• after the deputy there is the lead hunter and the lead guard. they are equal in terms of power, and report to the deputy. these cats are chosen by the leader, and they are chosen if they exceed expectations during their time as hunters/guards, and prove themselves to be trustworthy by following clan rules and following orders. new leads are chosen after the current leads die or retire.
• then there are the hunters and guards, and they are responsible for two different aspects of clan life. hunters are, as their name states, in charge of providing food for the clan. due to hickoryclan’s belief that food is not as important as safety, there are less hunters than guards. guards patrol the borders and guard the nursery, and they are the majority in the warrior population.
• after the hunters and guards there is the medicine cat. the medicine cat does not have a lot of power because hickoryclan believes their job to be useless, but their ancestors said that they should have a medicine cat in case of emergency. the only help the medicine cats is the medicine cat apprentice, but it is very hard for them to get one because they have to ask the leader, and the leader values warriors over medicine cats, and the gatherers, who are only temporary assistants.
• apprentices follow the medicine cat. they are chosen to train as hunters and guards during their eighth moon. the two moons before that are spent doing basics for both roles, and tests to help determine what role they would fit best. the lead hunter and guards sort the apprentices, and if they cannot reach a conclusion and need help they will ask the deputy and leader. apprentices who have a more lithe figure and energetic personality will become hunters, and apprentices who are bulky and sturdy will become guards. once they are sorted into their role they cannot switch out unless the leader says it is necessary.
• then there are the queens/kit-mothers. there should not be many queens in the nursery at one time because they value work, and see being a queen as a leisure and relax. there are one or two permanent queens in the nursery, though these permanent queens spend their time hunting for their fellow mollies. it is tradition that the mothers name all their kits but one, and the leader will name the last kit. if the queen wants to impress the leader, she will leave the strongest kit to be named.
• the queens take care of the kits, who are the second least powerful rank in the clan because of how little hickoryclan values kits. during the kits’ third moon, the deputy will visit them and determine if any of the kits are weak. those weak kits will be taken to be killed, and it is often the parents that kills them, because the clan believes that weak kits is the fault of the parents.
• finally, there are the gatherers. there are a maximum of two gatherers at one time, and they are warriors that are in the medicine cat den due to injury or pregnant queens. they help the medicine cat gather herbs. if one or both of the gatherers are injured warriors and remain gatherers for five moons, they are abandoned in the mountains and left to fend for themselves. once the warrior is healed or the queen gives birth, they are no longer a gatherer.
