Things had been going relatively peaceful as of late, and Jagdhund intended to keep it that way.
With the arrival of her newest clanmates - Brunhilde, Klaus, and their kits - there'd been a slight snag, but they'd managed to learn their places relatively quickly. For that, Jagdhund was thankful - while she wouldn't have hesitated to slaughter a kit or two to teach these brutes some manners, she really didn't feel like wasting her energy killing cats who could instead help defend her clan from any signs of danger.
Things have been going well. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

there was an eerie silence in the trees, the normally bristling leaves laying still like an animal on it’s last legs, one who had succumbed to the inevitable and rapidly approaching force of death. speaking of death, the forest reeked of rot and blood, bones were strewn everywhere, and some moon-old carcasses were tossed carelessly among the dirt. tree roots reached up and out from the ground, tangling and intertwining with each other, causing a lethal trip hazard when combined with the surplus of sharp and oddly angled rocks hidden in the shadows resulting from the mess that was this unkempt forest.
pawsteps echoed from behind an old tree, the bark of its great trunk falling off in clumps, almost in rhythm with the approach of the cat. suddenly the patter of another cat could be heard- followed by another, than another, until the sound of paws crunching on dead leaves was comparable to the racket of crickets in the dead of night. the body of one cat emerged from the shadows into a rather spacious clearing, followed by its companions until a sizable group of cats stood together, their body language signifying some anxiety- they were waiting for something.
after what seemed like a moon but was instead was a few heartbeats, a different cat joined the group in the clearing. it was clear this cat was different- instead of the scent of the forest and mulch, it was of crowfood and exhaust- the staple of a city cat. the forest cats almost laughed- this was the supposed ‘legend’ they were meeting with? son of and raised by one of the most feared leaders in the forest? his legs were shorter than theirs, his body quite scrawny, his long fur was well groomed, and he had no sign of battle experience on him- the lack of scars on his body was rather comedic. they didn’t vocalize this ridicule though, out of respect for his possible power.
one cat emerged from the group, and approached the tom. her eyes had some sort of recognition in them, but it was shrouded by confusion and a hint of disgust. the tom looked her up and down, and his eyes narrowed, hackles raising.
“i did not come here to fight, archpaw. you knew this,” said the tom, distrust leaking through into his words which he had, without success, attempted to show strength and that he wasn’t at least a little scared by her.
“sweetfeather. you’re aware i don’t go by archpaw anymore- i’m the same age as you. have you retained no respect for your sister?” the she-cat lowered her gaze to stare her brother directly in the eyes, and satisfaction glinted in her eyes when his tail tucked between his hind legs. “please, allow me to remind you that you approached me for help. is the supposed only living descendant of the mighty, all-powerful houndstar… frightened by a harmless she-cat?” she lifted her front right paw, extending her sharp claws and examining them, sensing her own group shiver slightly. “i do admire your team effort though- you’re not the only one who seems to be intimidated.” she put her paw down, and looked back at her companions.
sweetfeather took the slight break in between her words to speak up once more. “apologies, arch. of course i respect you.” he glanced over her shoulder back at her group, then swallowed his fear, straightened his stance, and stared her right in the eyes. “i asked for your help because i believe there may be a threat to my leadership. our half brother, shadepaw, is mentoring under bearstar. he was also raised by houndstar until he died, so i’m worried that bearstar may consider shadepaw to be his second commander instead of me. i requested bearstar give me an apprentice so i could show my responsibility, and he did, but now almost the whole clan hates me because i got an apprentice before one of the older worries. i don’t know how i can gain power without taking it forcefully. will you help me?”
arch’s tail curled, and she pinned her ears back, a hint of malice in her eyes. “seems to be an interesting request. but what’s in it for me?” the cats behind her seemed to shift uncomfortably. arch rolled her eyes, then cleared her throat. “i’m sorry, what’s in it for us?” leaning closer to sweetfeather, but still in perfect earshot of her companions, she said “some of these cats just don’t know how to keep quiet.”
sweetfeather glanced back to the cats behind arch, expecting a slight sign of rebellion or frustration with their leader, but they just sat there, blank faced. he looked at arch in bewilderment- how did the playful and determined apprentice he once knew become a powerful leader, and have so much control over these cats? “i-i’ll do anything,” he stammered, tail twitching in anticipation.
arch sat back on her haunches, eyes drifting up to the trees. sweetfeather’s heart pounded at thousands of pawsteps a minute, and he looked everywhere except for arch, as he felt that if he glanced at her he would burst.
suddenly, arch stood up, and the other forest cats followed suit. sweetfeather flinched, and he took a few steps back. arch lowered her eyes to make direct eye contact with sweetfeather, and he felt like he was melting inside by her heated glare. “bring me one of laurelclan’s kits,” she said, her voice deeper than it was before.
“one of the kits?” sweetfeather exclaimed, and looked, bewildered, from arch to her cats. “we have two kits that are under constant watch, and two litters on the way, so they won’t be leaving the nursery very soon. laurelclan also values kits very much, so if i’m caught trying to kidnap one i will be killed!”
arch scoffed, hackles raising. “don’t challenge me, brother. meet me here in one moon with the kit and i will help you however you need me to. if you don’t show up, then i will bring my business to your camp. think about it.”
