“where did you get all these herbs?” bea gasped, eyes skipping between herb piles. bumbletail and poppyleaf sat on each side of the newcomer, who was starstruck by the clan’s stock.
bea was found near their camp, searching for some herbs of her own. she informed the patrol she came from a rogue group just out in the western valley, but they couldn’t let her go on her own on such a cold night. and thus, bea found herself in amberclan’s medicine den, almost drooling at the sight of abundant vegetation.
bumbletail’s chuckle was warm- a drastic difference from the cold winds that traveled through the cracks in the den. he rose to his paws and padded to bea’s side, meeting her gaze. “we’re a bit low right now, but i’d be more than happy to do a trade with your rogues.” he offered.
bea bent down to sniff and nose through the herbs, checking to see if any had grown too old to be of any use to her. when she found them to be satisfactory, she looked to bumbletail with a thankful expression. “you should run that by your leader, but i’m happy to oblige.”
poppyleaf purred at the exchange, standing up slowly. “do you happen to have any catmint in the valley?” she asked tiredly, gaze quickly flitting to a sleeping warrior in the patient’s den. the cold had been affecting the entire mountainside, and some were just luckier than others.
bea craned to look at the tortoiseshell. she nervously ran her tongue over her teeth, avoiding poppyleaf’s gaze. “we don’t have much, but i’m sure our leader will be wanting it just in case.” the ginger molly took a moment to look around, her gaze falling onto the patient’s den. as she shifted her weight, she looked to the two medicine cats. “..you’re not used to the mountainside, are you?” bea normally wouldn’t be so comfortable around strangers, yet her sympathy for the situation seemed to overtake her.
poppyleaf made her way towards the rogue, exhaling with a chuckle. “nope, we’ve only been here since the summer.” bea nodded, tailtip flicking.
the ginger she-cat looked to bumbletail. bea was a large cat, nearly the size of the medicine cat, and a few nicks and scars decorated her wide figure. her eyes were dark with realization. for a moment, she averted her gaze, but returned it in an instant. “what if i helped you through this?”
bumbletail was taken aback, the kind offer shocking him to his paws. “t-through the greencough?” he mewed in disbelief. deep down he was thankful, but he wasn’t sure how the clan would take to being treated by a rogue.
poppyleaf padded up beside her old mentor, reassuringly brushing her tail over his. she knew the tom was quick to startle, and she didn’t want to eventually wind him down. her soothing tone overtook the uncertain cat. “that’s really.. generous, bea.” she mewed, eyes flitting to bumbletail - just to make sure. “i mean, we can ask sootstar, but i don’t know if the clan will be quick to trust so easily.”
bea’s upper lip curled into a grateful smile. “it may only be for a half-moon or so,” she noted. “who knows where the snow will strand me next, but i’ll make sure this’ll be the best winter you guys see.”

lilypaw and tansypaw trampled through the snow together, olivebranch and mintfur leading them both. lilypaw was born deaf, but she always wanted to explore the territory. ferretfur, the deputy, was always wary to let the white she-cat out of camp without supervision, but the warriors had convinced him. plus, lilypaw was going to become a warrior soon! with a beg and a pout, the small group was let into the territory so that lilypaw could finally mark seeing the snowbanks off her list.
the patrol was lax, olivebranch and mintfur sharing a chuckle over some story the elder warrior had rambled on about his kits. mintfur felt at ease then, making connections with his clanmates. nobody could’ve predicted what the day had in store.
the winter day was unusually warm, but the snow kept lilypaw’s pads cold. she wrinkled her nose, skipping beside her sister. lilypaw had been outside the territory before, but always surrounded and cramped. here, she could enjoy the outdoors with no cat’s tails in her face! the white she-cat romped her way through the snow, catching up to olivebranch and mintfur. she was nearly as tall as mintfur now, maybe an ear short?
olivebranch smiled at the apprentice, bumping her flank and motioning towards the river, just west of the camp. the patrol made their way to the banks, tansypaw being the first to reach the river. she tested the strength of the ice, pressing a paw down. she flinched from the cold, but was excited to realize it was strong enough. she quickly spun herself around and landed on the ice, claws unsheathing to mark the ice.
lilypaw followed after her sister, following after her flicking tail. the two sisters slid across the river as olivebranch and mintfur watched. the younger of the two warriors, mintfur, made his way to the river’s edge. he ran his paw over the ice, slowly maneuvering his way onto the frozen river. olivebranch watched, his figure still and relaxed. he settled near the cleanest patch of the bank, clearing a bit of the snow with a brush of his tail.
tansypaw nearly fell to her side when she leapt to the opposing riverbank. she looked back to lilypaw and mintfur as they chased each other around the ice. tansypaw raised a paw to motion her sister over. she was positive they could catch something today, and maybe olivebranch would give them a pass to eat it themselves.
lilypaw caught sight of the tabby she-cat, and shifted to pad over. she bumped her sister’s flank before trotting into the forest. tansypaw made an effort to follow, but the sight in front of her froze her in place.
the fox erupted from its den, lip curled to reveal cracked, yellow fangs. it landed on top of lilypaw, its canines sinking into the back of her neck. the white cat could only scream, her muscles tensing in preparation to flee. the fox never gave her that chance.
olivebranch bolted from his seat on the other side of the river, skidding across the ice to free his apprentice. mintfur turned once hearing lilypaw’s screams and quickly followed olivebranch’s lead.
tansypaw watched, wide-eyed. she couldn’t even make an effort to move, all she wanted in that moment was to sleep. sleep beside her sister, taking advantage of her warmth. lilypaw’s the best pillow this time of year. it’s so cold out.
