"Sorry you're already gettin' put to work." Tumbletuft mrrowed, humor dancing in her gaze as Feathercloud huffed and puffed behind her. The young father didn't look like he'd been too eager to leave his mate and kit back at camp, but had conceded under Brushstar's batting eyes and eager smile. "Hard to say no to her, huh?" She added, tapping Feathercloud tauntingly on the side with her tail and curving along the path further into the territory.
"I'm, huff, just glad to be helpin'!" The long-furred tom puffed, forcing a smile on his maw when Tumbletuft turned back to look at him, pity in her gaze. "I expected to work for a home, and with Ramone- Amberchirp, sorry - in the nursery, I gotta work for all three of us!" He went on to explain that his mate had actually been hunting and patrolling their small patch of land for about two moons, since they hadn't had anyone else to watch over their kit while hunting was done. "He's probably grateful for the chance to laze around." Tumbletuft snorted, quietly impressed with the tom back at camp. "We're lucky to have him, though. And you too, obviously. Your family's an amazing addition to the clan." She purred, greatly amused by Feathercloud's awkward squirming. Bumping the younger tom with her shoulder, the pair headed off, noses to the air.
----
The pair heading off on patrol moved under a softer silence. Tanglefrost and Brushstar padded shoulder to shoulder away from camp, heading to the farthest border. Oddly enough Brushstar had asked to speak with him privately. It made him a bit nervous, if he was being truthful. Sneaking a glance at the ginger molly, who looked just as chipper as she always did, he wagered that it couldn't be anything dreadfully serious. Frankly he wasn't sure she could think seriously.
"So." Her voice broke through his thoughts, soft and tentative - she looked anywhere but his face. "I've been meaning to ask you for a moon or so now," Brushstar began, speaking so slowly that Tanglefrost wanted to box the words out of her, "but now that Boarstrike's come along, and Amberchirp, Feathercloud, and Honeykit joined the clan... it really made me think." Well, now she was making him nervous. Suddenly, Tanglefrost found himself being the one looking anywhere but at his side. What was her deal? Despite himself, the black tom's tail flicked an anxious rhythm against his hind legs as they walked. Her mention of the new family took him slightly off guard. Brushstar's words sounded an awful lot like a confession - which was silly, wasn't it? Of course it was! She was immature and easily excitable, annoying and clingy and - and compassionate. So determined to make her destiny come to fruition but somehow more determined to make the clan a family others envied. Tanglefrost felt his face warm beneath his fur, thoughts racing in a dizzying circle that helped no one, close to breaking stride with Brushstar when she spoke again and all he could do was listen, breathlessly waiting for her words. "I know you said you'd only stay until the clan was stable enough to not collapse on itself," she paused to snicker and Tangefrost felt the air leave his lungs. Stars he was a mess. "But I like having you around! I'm sure Tumbletuft does too, along with all of our new family! So, y'know, I was wondering if you'd be my-"
"Yes. Of course!" The words fell from his maw before he had the idea to stop them and sending a wave of frigid panic pulsing through his limbs. Oh Stars - before Tanglefrost could utter anything aside from frantic verbal stumbling, Brushstar's expression lit up like the sun. "You will? Oh, Tanglefrost that means so much to me!!" Any prey in the area would have fled at her volume, but Tanglethroat couldn't pull the harshness into his voice to tell her so. He couldn't really say anything, even as she spun in a tight, overjoyed circle while trilling her delight. "I'll tell the clan when we get back to camp, thank you so much! I've been trying to decide who'd be the best suited to be my second in command, and with that whole new family coming in I thought now was the perfect time!" Wait - what? Brushstar seemed to take no notice of his sudden pause, shock listed across his features as she continued her speech. "I'm so happy you've decided to stay, Tanglethroat, really I am. You're my closest friend, y'know! Now c'mon, rock-paws, we gotta check the borders!" And she was off, just like their first meeting, leaving him stupified and silent while she ran off, chattering about who knows what. Of course she was asking him to be deputy, duh. It's not like she'd ask him to be her mate. Duh. Pff, obviously.
That's what he told himself, despite agreeing so eagerly while thinking it was exactly what she meant to ask. Awkward.
[Brushstar and Tanglefrost go hunting]
[Tumbletuft and Feathercloud go on patrol]
[Tanglefrost has been promoted to deputy!]
[Boarstrike is searching for herbs!]
[Duneclan consumes 3 servings of prey; one rabbit]
[btw I renamed Tanglethroat to Tanglefrost after someone brought a good point to my attention in PM.]
