Flurrytuft's Hunting Patrol
"Lambstar, you're back!" Fadedsong purred once the white she-cat padded into camp. Flurrytuft was to the left of her as she watched the white she-cat enter LambClan's moonlit camp with a new feline behind her.
"Who's that?""This is Whiterose, originally named Rosy. She knows how to fight and is very good at hunting." Lambstar said, introducing the white, red-eyed she-cat behind her. Whiterose dipped her head in respect of the the cats sitting in the camp. Lambstar looked up at the night-sky. It was far too late to actually do anything, so she just sent Whiterose to the warriors den and sat to speak with Fadedsong and Flurrytuft.
"So, did you name Lucky, Misty, and the quiet one?""Sable." Flurrytuft meowed with a yawn.
"And yes. Fadedsong said we only had to add something onto the back of their names, Right?"Yep! Wait- I mean no, Lucky needs to change his entire name, the same way Faded and I did.""What?""Flurrytuft! We're supposed to have names that you could find in real life! You can't find 'Lucky' in real life!" Lambstar exclaimed, making Flurrytuft jump back a bit and more awake.
"Come on, Flurrytuft! I even changed your entire name!""I thought that was just in spite of me!" Flurrytuft explained, with a joking tone in his voice.
"But hey, at least his name doesn't sound so bad! He's Luckyfur now." Fadedspng jumped in and added. Lambstar sighed, beginning to chuckle.
"Great StarClan, why'd I leave these two to name my cats? At least tell me what everyone else is called."* * * * * * * * *
A moon had gone by since LambClan got all the new warriors. Flurrytuft came to find out that Sablewhisper's quiet quirk was rather useful when it came to hunting, so the deputy normally put him on hunting patrols. Mistyleaf usually hated being separate from Sable and Luckyfur didn't enjoy the feeling of being left out so the three were normally wherever the black tom was. One morning, Flurrytuft decided to organize two separate patrols. One a hunting patrol and the other a border patrol.
"Lambstar, Fadedsong, Are you two up for a border patrol?" The gray tabby tom called out one warm, Greenleaf morning when he was assigning patrols. Normally, Fadedsong stayed inside LambClan camp, laying inside her den, but recently the medicine cat noticed that her den got very hot in the afternoon. So hot that it became a struggle for her to comfortably rest in her nest and snooze the day away, so she decided it'd be best to go on a border patrol rather than sit inside camp and burn up.
"Sure. I'm okay with going, but if something bursts into camp and steals our prey while we're gone, I'm going to be angry." Lambstar warned, though she didn't seem too serious with her tone.
"I'll personally replace all the prey!" Flurrytuft insisted.
"Okay, um..." Flurrytuft took a deep breath and rearranged his paws to stand more comfortable on the lowest branch of the "Announcement Tree". He looked down at his Clan below and ordered,
"Lambstar will lead a small border patrol. Fadedsong and Whiterose will head out with her. I'll lead a hunting patrol with Sablewhisper, Mistyleaf, and Luckyfur." Then climbed down from the tree towards his patrol.
"Where are we going today?" Luckyfur asked once Flurrytuft arrived.
Flurrytuft didn't ponder the question for too long. With the Greenleaf's heat, the hunting patrol would need to be the luckiest cats alive in order to hunt anything far from the river, and he definitely didn't want to travel all the way to the forest just to hunt.
"The river. After we hunt enough prey to eat, why don't we just laze about and enjoy ourselves?" Flurrytuft suggested. All the younger cats agreed then off they went.
"Just stay still, Mistyleaf. Still." Sablewhisper whispered to Mistyleaf. She was trying to catch a fish from the river. So far, all of her tries went terribly, either swiping the fish out the river too early or too late. It got to a point where she became frustrated and wanted to give up, but Sablewhisper then insisted on helping her, which got her to want to try a couple more times before quitting. A couple of fish were swimming about, enjoying the water which somewhat protected them from the sun's tiring rays. Some didn't notice Mistyleaf, whilst others did. The ones who did notice often teased Mistyleaf by swimming near where she sat then swam away just as quickly as they swam close to her, which lead Mistyleaf to get the urge to fidget and show those fish who's boss.
"Remember, fishing is a patient cat's game. These fish will start believing that you're not actually going to catch them and will just swim around carelessly, and then, you strike! Sablewhisper told her, a little louder than before.
"Wooowww, Sablewhisper. I thought being quiet was just your strong suite to hunting. You understand how prey works too? You're practically perfect then, huh?" Flurrytuft meowed on top of a rock that was near the river. He was waiting for Mistyleaf to catch the fish so he could splash into the river with Luckyfur, who was laying beside him.
Sablewhisper looked down at his paws and smiled as far as Flurrytuft could tell.
"Haha... Hunting's kind of a hobby of mine. I grew to learn all this.""Sablewhisper, the fish aren't noticing me as much anymore." Mistyleaf mewed, looking at the tom.
Sablewhisper peered into the water. The fish didn't notice her as much, but some were still a bit wary.
"Let's wait a bit longer." The black cat suggested. Mistyleaf let out a small annoyed sigh, letting the water ripple, then laid down. All the wary-looking fish swam fast away, then slowly returned once they realized that the white tabby she-cat above them wasn't going to do anything. Only three fish swam away from a whole swarm of around ten so those wary fish calmed down as their friends swam around without a care in the world as well.
Mistyleaf heard Flurrytuft ask Sablewhisper and Luckyfur a couple of questions, but didn't get a chance to hear what he was saying. She was focusing in on the fish, observing their behaviors and movement. One still seemed hesitant on swimming without being afraid of what Mistyleaf was going to do, so the other fish swam near her.
How mouse-brained! Do they really think I'm not going to try to eat them? She thought as the fish swam around near her. Her claws itched to go down and sink them into one of the taunting fish beneath her, but she wasn't going to have waited that long just so the fish would leave
again. "Sable! Sable, can I get them now?" She asked, but the tom wasn't even there. He was up on that rock with Luckyfur and Flurrytuft. She sighed, flicking her tail in annoyance.
"At least he still looks cute." She muttered to herself, peering back into the river. By now, the fish were swimming around as if she wasn't there at all. Looking back at Sablewhisper, she decided it was time to get them. She stretched her toes and unsheathed her claws. Licking her lips, she chose the easiest fish to get, which was the biggest fish out of them all. She slowly lowered her paws towards the water then struck. Water spewed everywhere and she felt something in her claws. It felt bigger than the fish she aimed for, but hey, at least she caught something. Retracting her claws, she flung her prey far from the water and stared at it, feeling a sense of pride in herself. Not one, but
two small fish! Neither were the one she actually aimed for, but she still did it!
"Woah, that was amazing!" Luckyfur purred.
"Great job!" Flurrytuft praised. She felt too proud of herself to let those make her feel anymore overjoyed with her results. Well, until she heard the most wonderful thing in her life.
"Mistyleaf, I'm so proud of you! I knew you could do it on your own!" Sablewhisper purred, rushing over to her. The tom put his head against Mistyleaf's, making the she-cats fur hot.
"I knew you could do it without me, but I wasn't expecting two fish!" Sablewhisper murmured, taking a few steps back from his white and gray friend.
"Ahah, thanks for believing in me, Sable!" Mistyleaf squeaked, feeling her fur heat up and it wasn't just the sun. Sablewhisper was so cute and kind, how could the she-cat not just love him? How could
any she-cat not love him? Sablewhisper looked back over to Flurrytuft and Luckyfur who were jumping off the rock into the river, splashing water all over the place.
"Look at that! You got enough prey for us to play around now! Are you gonna swim with us?" Sablewhisper asked. Mistyleaf wasn't quite the swimmer, which made since why Sablewhisper asked. She hesitated on her answer until Sablewhisper said he wouldn't swim if she didn't.
"And if you do, I'll swim with you." Now that was an opportunity she wasn't going to pass.
"Ah, okay! Let's go!"
