One was the deputy, Raccoonmask. He first encountered her on his way back to his territory and considered it a wonderful omen that she had appeared so quickly. She was a stocky calico with the muscles to enforce her role, and he admired her easy strength. Her attitude was rather business-like and no-nonsense, but she was punctual and focused in a way that would certainly benefit the clan. Her brilliant green eyes were hypnotizing, surrounded by a jet black mask, and he found himself thinking that she would make an excellent leader someday.
A short while after, Feathercurl had appeared. Another female, she had a more slender and graceful build than her predecessor, and the most beautiful ruff of thick fur around her neck. Lionstar was enthralled by her beauty and found himself captivated by her sky-blue eyes and silver-with-white coat. Before long he had memorized every tabby mark from her face to her tail tip and could recount the shape and location of each while trying to fall asleep. Not only was she lovely, she also had the kindest and most light-hearted personality he had ever known, and she played like a kit when New Leaf came and the flowers began to bloom along the edge of the territory.
For a time they lived like this, enjoying one another's company and bonding to make the clan stronger. Lionstar was pleased to find that despite the two female's differences, they became fast friends. Raccoonmask took it upon herself to bring the new molly under her wing and the two became almost inseparable.
As Lionstar grew closer and closer to Feathercurl, he decided that what his clan needed was a medicine cat. Not only because they would be protected from illnesses and accidents, but also because he was hoping to have kits and knew that he wanted to ensure his family would be as safe as possible. So one morning when the sun was only just rising and each cat was still sleepy from the night before, he saw Raccoonmask and Feathercurl off on their dawn patrol and he headed in the opposite direction, to cross the swollen river and journey to the Moonpool.

lost thoughts wrote:"cloverpatch! acornheart! cloverpatch! acornheart!" foxstar smiled at his kits from his branch of the blazing maple. acornheart's sudden declaration had startled him and he knew a starclan cat must be behind her sudden boost in confidence. now that he was thinking about it, foxstar thought he could remember stonestar saying something about his mate, sandheart. if his title was great as stonestar the wise, hers was even better as sandheart the kind. it was most likely her who had lifted acornheart's spirits. the ginger leader snapped out of his thoughts as he noticed the clan's chants had died down to a dreadful silence as his daughter approached vixenbelly. the warrior had been quite rude and snappy ever since hawkpaw's death, and it was obvious she blamed acornheart for it. so she was greatly surprised when the tortoiseshell lowered her head respectfully to her, in a submissive attitude. "i offer you my sincerest apologizes for the wrongs i have committed towards you. towards all of you. i know some of you will never forgive me for what i have done, but i assure you i feel no hate towards any of you. only respect...and guilt. lots of it." all cats held their breaths, as vixenbelly's expression had stayed perfectly unreadable throughout the young warrior's speech. to everyone's surprise, heatherpaw padded forwards and gently pressed her nose against acornheart's shoulder. "i was mad before. i could barely stand the fact that foxstar let you stay in the clan. but the other day, mum and i spoke with hawkpaw, and he seemed so...happy. he wasn't at all angry at you, he seemed rather worried for you. that's when i understood that he truly believed in the good of your heart. and if he does, so do we. right, mum?" vixenbelly's eyes were watery, and tears streamed down her face as she stepped forwards to nuzzle the two young mollies. "of course we do. i've been so foolish, hating you with all might for a crime you actually didn't commit. starclan forgive me for my horrible behavior. i'm such a bad mother." heatherpaw and acornheart shook their heads and emitted small disapproving meows. then doveflight shyly walked forwards and joined the 'group hug'. her brother and kits followed her example, and soon the whole clan, including it's leader and deputy, were huddled together. a sign that if littlestep ever did return, they would fight. together.

tigerfang was silently eating her dinner with magpiefeather when she noticed he was intensely staring at her. weird. "hey, magpie." "hmn?" "are you okay?" the tom turned his head sideways, questioning. "i'm fine, why?" "you keep staring at me." the tuxedo's black and white pelt seemed to turn red. "i-i-i'm so s-sorry! i was l-lost in my thoughts and-" "it's fine, don't worry. it's not like you were talking in your sleep." the bengal returned her attention to the mouse she was eating, not noticing magpiefeather's quite puzzled expression. the tom opened and closed his mouth several times, trying to voice the sentence in his mind out loud. "tigerfang! i lo-" magpiefeather stopped mid-sentence as his friend's green gaze met his. he then blurted out, "i let a hare escape the other day on hunting patrol, i'm so sorry!" now it was the molly's turn to be confused. "is that what you kept trying to tell me lately? don't worry, i'm sure the hunting patrol today will catch one." magpiefeather nodded and seemed relieved when foxstar called him over for border patrol. tigerfang waved her tail goodbye and continued her meal. she heard small pawsteps come towards her and raised her head to see cinderpaw. the apprentice had quite an amused expression on her face. "aren't you catching on?" "catching what?" cinderpaw sighed dramatically, exasperated. "dear starclan, are you blind? he loves you!" the bengal suddenly felt very hot under her pelt. "w-what? b-but we're just f-friends!" cinderpaw slightly shook her head, as if grounding a child. "you tell me. but if you two were friends, why would your face be so red, hmm?" a teasing smile appeared on the dark cat's face and she walked back to her mother. poor tigerfang was left with her face on fire, along in a corner, trying to piece her feelings together.

Good, none.
Setting his mind that this was the perfect place for camp, he climbed up a tree and scanned the forest where his vision would allow him, determining the perfect places for borders. And best yet, there seemed to be plenty of prey and there was also a small stream nearby with fishes in them.
Perfect.

Simonpet wrote:It was time for yet another apprentice ceremony, while later that day, Honeystar planned to take some of the apprentices to the Moonpool. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey," she yowled from the Speaker's Tree, "come gather beneath the Tree for an apprentice ceremony!"
Cats of all ages and pelt colors came from their dens to crowd around the Tree. Shellfur led her two kits, Fritillarykit and Badgerkit, to the front of the crowd where they stood proudly, fur clean from a last-minute grooming.
"Fritillarykit and Badgerkit. You have adapted well to the clan and now it is time for you to receive mentors who will further your education. I would like to call up Gingerstorm and Adderstream." The two warriors complied while the rest of the clan cheered. "Gingerstorm," continued Honeystar. "You have been an invaluable asset to the clan. You will mentor Fritillarykit and I hope that you will pass down your wit and enthusiasm. Until you earn your warrior name, Fritillarykit, you will be known as Fritillarypaw." She paused to let the clan cheer before moving on. "Adderstream. You were born and raised in the clan, and have shown that you are mature enough for an apprentice of your own. You will mentor Badgerkit and I hope you will pass down your knowledge and willingness to try new things. Until you earn your warrior name, Badgerkit, you will be known as Badgerpaw."
The two mentors and two apprentices touched noses and the clan began to cheer. "Fritillarypaw! Badgerpaw! Fritillarypaw! Badgerpaw!" The two apprentices glanced at each other nervously, at first, before spontaneously bursting into grins.

That day, almost no one was in camp. Honeystar had taken the oldest apprentices and their mentors to the Moonpool, while Snowfoot led a patrol to look for a rogue that had been scented in the territory. The rest were split between hunters, patrollers, and mentors training their apprentices. In camp, Boulderpelt and Barleystream stood guard while Birchnose, Ashstripe, Bramblingwhisker, and Patchcloud rested. This left Fleckstorm and Shellfur enjoying the mild weather and chatting quietly.
"I worry, sometimes," confided Shellfur.
"Why?" asked Fleckstorm, glancing at the other molly.
"Well," said Shellfur hesitatingly, "I haven't been part of the clan for very long, and I just wonder what training will be like."
Fleckstorm gaped at the other. "Y-you seriously think that they'll be hurt?" She snorted. "Ha, no. Honeystar and Birchnose would kill them personally. No, it's just basic training for a few moons. So honing their ability to hunt, defend themselves, climbing up and down safely. And then the apprentices choose what they decide to focus on for another few moons before going to the Moonpool, speaking with Starclan, and going through assessments. From what I've heard, the assessments are a series of challenges. Like catching a certain amount of prey in a certain amount of time, how long one can last during a sparring session, things like that."
"Oh," said Shellfur, relaxing slightly. "Good."

Honeystar padded up to the Moonpool and glanced up at the sky. Are you happy, now? she wondered. Minkstar had better be taking care of you, or I'll give him a talking-to the next time I see him. She smiled slightly; if her ancestor had heard, he would probably be shocked at her lack of respect for her elders. Ah, well.
"What's going to happen?" asked a worried Swanpaw.
"We'll see Starclan cats!" exclaimed Kestrelpaw. In a more sober tone, she added, "I wonder if we'll see Acornstream." She glanced at Gannetpaw, whose ears had flicked backwards.
"If you do," said Duckpelt in a trembling voice, "tell him that I'll always love him."
"Okay," promised Gannetpaw.
One by one, the apprentices lapped up some water from the Moonpool and fell asleep, curled against each other. Duckpelt looked at the young cats fondly. May they sleep well and find wisdom in their dreams, she thought.

Swanpaw hadn't really believed in Starclan, mostly because he hadn't seen any proof. If Starclan was so mighty, he had asked once, why had they let the badger attack happen? The only answers he had gotten were vague words that he felt were contradictory. But now, he saw proof with his own eyes that Starclan existed. Certainly not what he had expected, but it existed, for all around him was Forestclan territory, with mist flowing through the trees. He was still beside the Moonpool--somehow--but only the other apprentices were with him. He turned to see five cats approach and when they left the mist, revealed themselves to be Grayfur, Bramblebush, Dawnstorm, Acornstream, and an elderly tom he didn't know.
"It's real?" Swanpaw whispered with wonder. The unknown tom nodded solemnly. Around him, Gannetpaw, Kestrelpaw, and Smokepaw woke and padded up to sit beside him.
"First, I'd like to introduce myself," said the elderly tom. "My name is Minkstar, ancestor of Honeystar. I'm sure you know the others. Swanpaw, I'd like to speak with you alone. Come with me." Minkstar turned and began to walk back into the mist.
Swanpaw blinked. This was certainly not what he expected, but he stood and with a shake of his tail, bounded after the dead leader, leaving his fellow apprentices behind. After a few seconds, he caught up with Minkstar who smiled and sat down.
"I'm sure you have a lot of questions for me," said Minkstar evenly, "and I would be happy to answer every one of them."
Questions had indeed bubbled up inside of Swanpaw, and words were out of his mouth before he realized what happened. "Why did you let Acornstream and Bramblebush die?" he asked. "Acornstream had a family. Bramblebush was retired. Why? And," he added, "how do you know my name?"
Minkstar sighed. "Despite what you have been told," he said, "the spirits of Starclan are not all-powerful. We can only appear in dreams, and it is very difficult to enter the dreams of those who aren't close to the stars. That means that usually, we can only touch future and current leaders, medicine cats, and the rare cat born with the ability to sense spirits like me. As to how I know your name," he said with a sly smile, "I've always been interested in Forestclan. Why wouldn't I know your name, is the question you should ask."
"Oh." Swanpaw had been surprised to get a straight answer from Minkstar, but when he thought about it, the restrictions made sense. Supposedly, spirits could only touch the living world as long as their name was remembered and he had never heard of Minkstar until this night. In addition, spirits lived in a different world than the living. It made sense that they couldn't touch objects in the living world without extreme effort. "And is it true that you can see the future?"
Minkstar chuckled. "No," he said. "Just hunches. Hunches based off events in your world. I couldn't tell you if the river will flood next newleaf but I could tell you if it will this newleaf. And judging by the past seasons, I have no doubts that it will. So stay away from the river for the next couple of moons and you should be fine."
"Well, thanks?" said Swanpaw, confused. He hadn't exactly asked for that information but it would be useful. He made a mental note to tell Honeystar when he woke up. "Do you know what my assessments will be like?"
Minkstar outright laughed. "Even if I did, I wouldn't tell you. You kits need the challenge. It won't be beyond your abilities, I promise. Now go," he said. "Dawn is almost here. Just do your best and I'm sure you can pass."
Swanpaw swallowed, nervous. But the old leader believed in him, right? So maybe he shouldn't be so anxious. He puffed out his chest. He could do this. And then he woke up.
