Alex leaned back in his chair as the leaders of each area started to settle down after entering the room. He cleared his throat and started, “As you all know, we have had a massive increase in people in the last few months, haize and geo being sent here as well as six children being born. SIX!”

Pheonix rolled his eyes, “Be happy you can have kids bro, I can’t. I mean I don’t want any but hey, that door is closed for me.”

Alex widened his eyes, “Oh, no don’t take me wrong I love Anny and Angus, they are absolute sweethearts it’s just there are a lot of babies born and we need to address the food situation. Plus, one other issue I want to get to.”

Jason started up, “Alright, with so many hunters we are doing pretty good with hunting, but I’m not sure how well we are going to keep up with it, so as long as your mother keeps sending us hunter’s, we will keep the freezer’s plentiful.”

“Good, good… Zax?”

“Yeah man, we are doing pretty good. Got a great harvest out of our spinach which means we are going to get lots of good salads set on the buffet line for everyone! Which is exciting, plus with Haize coming in, and us clearing out that last lot for a crop means that she can plant something for us and care for it too. We are doing pretty good for it being four of us.”

“Great! That’s fabulous. I’d love for you to get Haize on her crop right away!”

“Will do!”

“Alright you two have been addressed, um, next is Ruby, Jasper we’ll talk to you last for the big news on the children, anyways, Ruby, continue.”

“So, borders look fine, every fence is strong and sturdy. Scarlett has adjusted well to being back to work, otherwise we are good.”

“Pheonix?”

“Outside the territory looks good, finding Geo was a plus as well.”

“Alright that is good enough for me this week! Next order of business is a big one,” Alexander paused, “Oh wait! Go ahead Jasper!”

“Thanks,” He said, drawing out the last syllable, “So, obviously, Alex and Vivian had twins, Anny and Angus. Both healthy, although it worries me that Anny hasn’t made a noise since she was first born,” Alex nodded and motioned his hand for jasper to continue, “I believe that she is mute.” There were small murmurs of apologies which Alex just swiped away with his hand.

“She’s healthy and strong. She has ten finger’s and ten toes and she’s going to be great at whatever she does when she grows up! No coddling her at all! But we will need to learn sign language for her benefit though…”

Jasper nodded, “Yeah, I’m already gathering books to study it to give to Vivian as well. Anyways. Tug and Basil had a kid as well, they named her Minty, which I thought was just fitting!”

Zax rolled his eyes, “Yeah, Tug kept dropping names like Basil the second or like Flame or something dumb. Basil was getting so mad she kicked him out of the house one night!”

Jasper shook his head, “Well Minty was the cutest that’s for sure, and basil came up with it on her first try too! Which I thought was hilarious. Anyways, Anyways, we are getting sidetracked! Ryann, the woman we found just had triplets. I had to have an emergency ‘C’ section and the second born ended up getting a twisted arm. He’s alright now, but he’s got a long hard road ahead of him, that’s for sure.”

Ruby smiled, “Names? She finally decide on names?”

“Yeah! And I would never have picked them, but whatever, they are her kids. The girl is Endellion, calling her Inde for short, and then the kid with the twisted arm is Genie. She wanted to call him King Tut, but I vetoed that right away, refused to write it down in the records!”

“Oh my gosh, that woman,” Jason said, letting out a big huff, “She kills me. She’s being saying some really stupid names and everyone has been shutting her down and then Genie! Wow, poor kid. One day he’s going to have to deal with that.”

“Hey,” Zax said laughed, “Atleast its better than being named after a type of cow!”

“Angus is a good name!” Said Alex, huffing.

Jason rolled his eyes, “Yeah, one level better than Genie.”

“Yeah and why didn’t you have a kid starting with the letter ‘V’? Do both have to have the same initials as you, or does Viv get no choice?” Said Pheonix, laughing at Alex.

“For the record, she came up with the names! And I liked them!”

Jasper smacked his hands lightly on the table, laughing as he did, “Listen, Listen," He paused for dramatic effect," Ryann’s last kid is named," He paused again before raising his voice and drawing out the name like some 1960's hippie, "Sol.”

There was a pause, then a roaring laughter. The name was unique and weirdly something Ryann would do. “Geez’,” Said Ruby, rubbing her eyes, talking when the laughing fit started to settle down, “Me and Rhen haven’t talked names yet, but I’m sure we probably will eventually.” She then slammed her hands over her mouth and widened her eyes, she hadn’t meant to spill the beans that she and Rhen were talking about children but it looked like everyone knew now.

“RUBY! YOUR PREGGARS?”

“No! We were talking about it the other night! Just like, how many we want to have and like, if we thought we were mature enough yet…”

Jasper threw his hands up, “I’m all babied out! No more! No more!” He ended his charade in a giggling fit before gently punching her in the shoulder, “Give me a second to recover, delivering 6 babies is a chore.”

"Ok, Ok," Alex said, "Let's get back on track. Now, the big idea slash news I have is this..."

It had been an eventful time for Hawk Ridge. Though the village was growing slowly, at least it was growing. Elora couldn't say she was very happy about the people she ended up finding, however.

Hawk Ridge's newest member was a fighter to the core. She was stubborn and ambitious, and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Part of Elora admired her for it, but the bigger part hated that she was so outspoken, so against a lot of the ideas Elora had or spoke of. Her name was Laurel, and it was apparent from the very first moment the others saw her that she would make a great warrior.

"Who goes there?" The voice was unfamiliar to both Elora and Seraphim, who were on the outskirts of the village border, gathering more materials to make a new hut. They had been talking softly, but sound traveled in the forest, especially when dusk was starting to fall, and the daytime creatures began to settle into their nests for the evening. The two exchanged a glance, Seraphim's left hand going behind his page where he had stowed a knife, attached to a sleeve on the back of his belt. His right hand twitched toward Elora, reaching out as if to stop her. It was an unconscious gesture; but he was prepared to push her back to take the brunt of the fight if it boiled down to that. People could be very hostile in this forest if they were hungry enough.

Elora barely noticed Seraphim's arm, squinting into the darkening trees to try and spot the stranger. "My name is Elora, and I should be asking you that question, stranger. You are trespassing in Hawk Ridge's village, if you weren't able to read the signs on the trees you must've passed."

A snort sounded in the dark, though footsteps signified that the newcomer was approaching. She was a human, with darker skin... and perhaps the most unsettling - a sword gripped in one of her hands. Her face was scarred, a portion of it bandaged from a recent fight, but she didn't seem to care. She appraised Seraphim and Elora hastily, her eyes cold. "I saw your signs. I chose to ignore them. I figured I could see what was up. I had no idea there was a village here."

Elora nodded, though she offered no further conversation, crossing her arms to wait for the human to say more.

"Truthfully, I was hoping this was a village I could sleep in for the night. I've been travelling for too long, and my legs just want something soft to sleep on. Could I stay the night? Maybe get some food, too?"

Elora narrowed her eyes, frowning slightly. "Free food and lodging? I don't know if we can spare both for you, not without something in return."

The newcomer let out a harsh laugh, but she all but beamed at Elora. "I like you, you're smart. I was actually thinking of staying permanently. You look like you could use a strong warrior." She looked up Seraphim up and down, at his slender figure. It was true he was no fighter, but Elora had seen him strike animals down with speed she hadn't seen on any other being. This warrior was wrong to underestimate him, but that was something she chose to ignore. Seraphim could defend himself, and she didn't need to prove that right now.

"I would be willing to accept you as a warrior. What's your name?"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry. My name's Laurel Page." Elora reached out her hand, not breaking eye contact as they shook. "Now, where's some food?"

The new warrior is named Laurel Page.

t for life. obtaining one's ikran is a pas
sage into adulthood and becomign a f
ull-blown warrior, a very big deal in p
articular. the other mounts, such as t

ant, and can be ridden by multiple rid

all na'vi, not only the kaokay, believe in eywa. eywa is their goddess, deit
y, mother nature, their gaia. she is the most important and powerful, pos
sibly their only, god. the entire moon of pandora and their ecosystem is s
aid to be controlled by eywa, and she does her best to keep it in a perfec
t harmony. the na'vi and fellow organisms contact eywa and their ancesto
rs through connecting their queue, or tswin, onto plants such as the tree
of souls. connecting their queue to other living things is called tsaheylu, a
nd is a very important and special moment for a young hunter/warrior. as
stated above (to the right), when a trainee performs tsaheylu to an ikran,
it is permanent, and no other rider can connect with that ikran, and neith
er can they. the na'vi can contact eywa for help, or to heal. they also con
tact eywa for luck. she is their everything, and that is just how it is for th
em. the woodsprites are seeds of the tree of souls, and in the occurrence
of seeing them, or them coming to you, it is seen as a sign from eywa. ⏤

the kaokay's most popular and main mode or transport is by u
sing their ikrans. when without them, they will ride the nativ
e direhorses, but they are less effective to get off of the mou
ntains. when a young na'vi goes to connect tsheylu with their
ikran, it is a very special moment, as it their rite of passage i
nto becoming a hunter/warrior. this time is called the iknima
ya, meaning the performance of connecting the queue with t
he antennae of the ikran, then performing their first flight. w
hen this is complete, the rider and ikran are bound for life. if
this process does not go as planned, then the na'vi will die; th
e ikran will kill them. a hunter's or warrior's life among these

When the knight first stood up, Ackerley couldn't hold back their undignified squeal of excitement. It was just a test run of the motors, they had to remind themselves, there was no one inside the body yet. Welding together a walking suit of armor was tricky, yes, but it was child's play in comparison to crafting a working AI. Still, one step at a time. They couldn't very well create a being and not offer it a working body.

When the knight first thought, Ackerley nearly burst into tears. They had done it. They had made life. Nothing could possibly be more beautiful than the 'ᴬᶜᴷᴿᴸᵞ?' that flashed across the robot's faceplate. The simple acknowledgement of their name filled Ackerley with such delight that even their pathetic noodle arm induced failure to pull the knight to its feet could not dampen.

When the knight first spoke, Ackerley nearly cried for a an entirely different reason. The sound was excruciatingly painful.

"Your name is Amicus."

"Ameeeec-c-cus," tried the robot again, but despite their best efforts their rendition of their name still came out sounding like a screech of steam and a click click click of cogs turning. If Amicus had the means to look embarrassed they would likely be flushing a deeper scarlet than their faceplate. Alas, being built in the style of a suit of armor made reading Amicus very difficult and their inability to really speak didn't help matters either.

'ˢᴿᴿᵞ' flashed across Amicus's faceplate. 'ˢ'ᴺᴼᵀ ᵂᴿᴷᴺᴳ

"Let's try something else then." Ackerley swore the hiss of steam that Amicus let out at that was almost a sigh. "Can you say Amy?"

Another hiss of steam, but Amicus complied. "Ameee!" It wasn't a perfect rendition but it was significantly less grating. Ackerley couldn't hold back their smile.

"You did it!" They flung their arms around Amy's humming carapace, beaming from ear to ear as the knight awkwardly arranged their bulky arms around their creator's shoulders. A warmth burned in Ackerley's chest that they were pretty sure had little to do with Amy's steam-powered circuitry. Was it pride? No, it was something more than that. Contentment. Happiness. The joy of no longer being alone. Forehead pressed up against Amicus's warm chest, the cold lonely nights seemed like a distant dream.

"Iii ammm Ameee and you are C-c-curleee," Hummed Amy happily. Ackerley didn't even protest the nickname. Where it had once been an annoyance, now it was a memory of home.

In showing Amy around the little clearing Ackerley had made their home, they were finally able to utilize the name they had privately been calling the spot for the past several months. "I call it Mekhanikos," they informed Amicus happily as the pair sat under the shade of the tree Ackerley's workshop lean-to leant up against. Rather, Ackerley sat. Amicus stood stiffly, a perfect replica of the suit of armor in Ackerley's father's office. "It's latin-" The only other subject Ackerley was any good at in school. "-It means full of ingenuity." Amicus clicked thoughtfully. "Your name is latin too," Ackerley took the silence as invitation to say all in a rush, "It means friend. Because you're my friend."

"Freeeend," Amy agreed. "Will prot-t-tec-c-c-t-t-t."

Soon Amy had two new 'friends' to protect. A golem nearly as tall as the knight and the, in comparison, small cat ei toted. Ackerley had dragged the body of the golem, which had upon first glance seemed like a pile of useful clay and crystals, back to Mekhanikos one day on a sledge. A wildcat cub, already nearly as large as a domestic cat, curled up on the golem's chest.

"I needed clay to patch up the lean-to," Ackerley explained to the disconcerted Amy, "But there was this really weird force keeping everything together so I couldn't not bring it all back."

'ᴺ' ᵀᴴᴱ ᶜᴬᵀ?'

Ackerley shrugged, grinning sheepishly. "She wandered after me away from her pride. How could I deny her the adventure she sought?" Plus they just really liked cats. "I'm naming her Calpras," they continued. Amy let out another whistle of steam but did not object, what good would that do now? The cat already had a name.

But as it turned out, Calpras was not the name the wildcat would keep. Keiran, as the golem's name was revealed to be after ei had woken up during one of Ackerley and Amy's discussions over food and farming, had never managed to wrap eir head around why a cat named Calpras would be referred to as she. After all, golem pronouns were individual and derived from their names. They and them were known neutral pronouns, even to golems, but Calpras ended up being referred to as Sheherr often enough that she stopped responding to anything else.

There was no risk of Sheherr leaving Mekhanikos however. Though the wildcat resisted any attempts to really domesticate her, she was happy enough to always return to the little group at night and curl up to sleep next to Keiran. Sheherr's affection was readily returned by the young golem, whose touch-starved nature had been the only reason ei hadn't been whipped up into a frenzy after Ackerley awoke em as ei claimed other golems would be likely to have done had a human learned their activation word.

Thankfully Keiran was still young and more than a little desperate to find eir parents. Ackerley, ei mentioned, was the only one who could really help em. "It would be sacrilegious for a golem to try and guess another's activation word, but if a human were to do it-" Ei shrugged as well as ei could. "-I could turn a blind eye." Ackerley was too busy taking notes on how Keiran was able to create understandable words from the rasping of certain stones against one another to really be concerned with the danger eir plan might present.

Late on summer evening as the trio and cat sat around the fire, waiting for Ackerley's dinner to finish cooking, Amy asked a question that had been buzzing around their mind like the moth that had once gotten caught in their chest cavity. 'ᵂᴴᵀ'ˢ ᴬ ᴹᵀᴴᴿ?'

It took Ackerley a moment to piece together the question that hung on Amy's faceplate, illuminated by flickering embers, then a moment longer to come to a suitable answer. "A mother is a kind of parent. You know what a parent is right?"

Amicus nodded. Ackerley had filled their AI with basic words and definitions, but they supposed they had somehow neglected mother.

"Well a mother is a parent, usually one who uses she and her, like Sheherr." They neglected any biological bits about pregnancy since it was highly unlikely to mean anything to a robot or a golem, if Keiran were paying any mind to the conversation.

The knight turned this over thoughtfully, faceplate angled to watch as Keiran teased Sheherr with a bit of twine. 'ᴹᵀᴴᴿˢ ᴾᴿᴼᵀᶜᵀ?'

Ackerley thought of their own mother, who had so desperately wanted to keep her son safe. She really had loved them, even if her ways of showing it were a bit overbearing. "Yeah. Yeah they do protect."

"Iii will be mothhher to Mehk-k-kanik-k-kos." Amicus's clicks were final and definite. They would protect this town and the beings within it if it cost them their life.

''Why are your eyes like that?'' Inquired Artemio, prodding the satyr in the arm. ''They look funny.'' Quietly, the tactless child stared curiously up at the hunter, wondering why his pupils were so rectangular rather than being a circle like his or his mother's. Ignoring his mother's apologetic babbling, the wood elf continued to peer up at Helios, patiently expecting an answer.

Blinking awkwardly, the satyr looked around anxiously. ''Uh...I dunno.'' He shrugged, scratching the back of his head. ''I was born like this so...goat genes?'' Helios mumbled. ''I am a satyr after-all, I just look different from you anyway.'' Eager to escape Artemio's scrutiny, Helios sighed with relief when the wood elf seemed satisfied with this answer, running off to join his mother.

Backing away slowly, the satyr edged along the cliff-walls before sprinting off into a labyrinth of clay walls. Echoes seemed to bounce of from the walls as if spoken by the voices of those gone before. Helios could hear the murmur of water as it tumbled down into the dark, the canyon pressing in close to him. As the sun drifted through the sky, the shadows grew long and lengthy, and after running into a dead-end for the millionth time, Helios turned his hooves onto the walls themselves.

Scaling them with ease, Helios slowly drifted into the dark woods. He didn't belong in the canyon with the others, they had made a mistake and Helios was going to march back home and sort everything out. Rubbing his arms, the lonely satyr traipsed through the forest, the dark trees looming over him, as sinister as spiders. Leaf-litter rustled underhoof and Helios felt himself become slowly attuned to the whispers of nature; Wings fluttering and things lurking in the dark, all were nothing more than peaceful white-noise.

Suddenly there was a terrible roar, a rush and whirl of wind that shook the forest to its very roots. A flurry of scarlet scales sent Helios darting for the thickets, hooves scrabbling for cover as hot wind ruffled his hair; Flames flickered in the corners of his eyes, and an almost primal instinct to run took over. Without care for wherever he was going, Helios crashed and flustered through the brambles, the thorns snagging at his arms.

A moving object hit an immovable object with a loud thump, and Helios tumbled backwards onto the forestfloor. Before him stood a tall suit of armour, proud and towering; With a bruise smarting on his arm, the satyr couldn't help but admire the craftsmanship of the armour. ''Woah...'' Slowly, he rose onto trembling legs and reached out with a hand to touch the cold metal; Steel and all a manner of shiny metals gleamed before him, like precious treasure. ''...Who made you?''

''Curlee...'' The armour whirred softly, sending the satyr leaping out his skin. ''...Curlee.'' It repeated, appearing to be shocked by the petrification on the satyr's face. ''What scary?'' The armour moved slowly towards him, metal clanking and creaking as it moved. A cold hand reached out for Helios' shoulder, causing him to slap it away (which in hindsight was a bad idea, for there was a whole manner of bruises as a result) and leap up dizzily to his legs. He had never run so fast before.

Except when there had been torchlight and gunfire as a prompt, then he had run even faster.
