Brackenveil had never planned to leave her homeland.
The snowy forest had always been enough - soft ground, cold air, familiar paths worn by the seasons. But when spring arrived heavier than usual, melting snow into streams that ran too fast and too loud, she followed one of them farther than she ever had before. The ground stayed damp beneath her hooves and that was reason enough to keep going.
The forest slowly started to change.
The air warmed, not harshly, but gently. Trees grew closer together, their trunks darkers, their roots wrapped in miss. Then the ferns appeared - tall and curling, layered thick enough to hide the ground completely. Brackenveil slowed, lifiting her legs higher so she wouldn't tangle them. The smell was different here; green and wet and alive in a way she hadn't known before.
She paused often, standing still among the ferns until her breathing matched the forest again. Insects drifted lazily through the air, and small white wings flickered between the leaves. The ground was softer than she expected, holding her weight without slipping. It reminded her of thawed snow and of mud after a long winter. She began to relax.
