EXTENSION

E- Locus

Determines the amount of eumelanin (black-based) vs phaeomelanin (red-based) pigment on a bannochi.

  • E - full extension (black-based pigment shows)
  • Em - masked (black-based pigment shows normally, but includes a "mask", typically around the muzzle and face)
  • ej - harlequin (patches of black and red pigment appear randomly across the coat) (lethal homozygous)
  • ef - schimmel (red-pigment only, "roan out" to a red-based colorpoint)
  • e - self red (solid red with no countershading, tends to more intense shades)

BASE COLOR & DILUTIONS

B- Locus

  • BB/Bb - black
  • bb - chocolate
ImageImage

D- Locus

  • DD/Dd - normal pigmentation
  • dd - blue-based dilution (black to blue, chocolate to fawn)
ImageImage

P- Locus

Turns dark eyes pink and dilutes both black and red-based pigmentation

  • PP/Pp - dark-eyed, normal pigmentation
  • pp - pink-eyed dilute
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

G- Locus

  • GG/Gg - normal pigmentation
  • gg - dilutes all red-based pigment to grey. Does not affect black-based pigment.
ImageImageImage

C- Locus

The c-locus has a more pronounced effect on black-based pigment, causing the "colorpoint" patterns (burmese, siamese, and himalayan).

On red based pigment, color is reduced evenly all over, creating "red dilutes."

  • C_ - full color
  • cbcb - burmese |gold
  • cbch/cbc - siamese | amber
  • chch/chc - himalayan | cream
  • cc - albino (red-eyed white)

PATTERNS

A- Locus: Agouti

Agouti is the "Wild type" coloration, where each hair shaft consists of lighter and darker pigment, creating a ticked appearance.

Agouti only appears on bannochi with E or Em, and shows partially with ej.

  • A - agouti
    ah - honey
    ag - golden agouti
ax - exotic agouti (lethal when homozygous)
    at - fox
    a - self colored
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

NUTMEG

Nutmeg occurs when a bannoch has recessive pairs on both A and E loci. (aa ee)

Nutmegs resemble agouti without the counter-shading.

FLORAL COLOR CHART

FLORAL PIGMENTS

Florals are "fantasy" colorations. ie. colors that don't appear naturally in mammals. All bannochi have secret hidden floral genetics, but these only show when certain genes are active.

Floral coloration is dominant to natural coloration. For those who only want to breed natural colors there's no chance of two natural colored bannochi producing a floral!

Fe and Fp

These genes activate the presence of floral pigment on a bannochi.

  • FeFe/Fefe - Floral colors show on eumelanin
(Black-based pigment instead shows floral coloration)
  • fefe - black-based pigment shows naturally

  • FpFp/Fpfp - Floral colors show on phaeomelanin
(Red-based pigment instead shows floral coloration)
Fp combined with ee causes "bleed through". 'Agouti' and 'masked' markings will be visible, but will be a slightly darker shade of the red-pigment base color.
  • fpfp - red-based pigment shows naturally

Eumelanin-based Floral Genetics

B- Locus

Controls how "warm" or "cool" the floral color is

  • BB/Bb - cool colors (blue/purple/green)
  • bb - warm colors (red/orange/yellow)

Bf- Locus

controls the shade of floral pigment

  • BfBf - blue or red pigment
  • Bfbf - purple or orange pigment
  • bfbf - green or yellow pigment

D- Locus

  • DD/Dd - normal pigmentation
  • dd - diluted/desaturated floral pigment

P- Locus

Turns dark eyes pink and dilutes both black and red-based pigmentation

  • PP/Pp - dark-eyed, normal pigmentation
  • pp - pink-eyed dilute, causes pastel florals

Phaeomelanin-based Floral Genetics

I- Locus

Controls the shade of floral pigment on phaeomelanin.

  • IrIr - red
  • IbIb - blue
  • IyIy - yellow
  • IrIb - purple
  • IrIy - orange
  • IbIy - green

G- Locus

  • GG/Gg - normal pigmentation
  • gg - diluted/desaturated floral pigment

P- Locus

Turns dark eyes pink and dilutes both black and red-based pigmentation

  • PP/Pp - dark-eyed, normal pigmentation
  • pp - pink-eyed dilute, causes pastel florals
