Fables ✧ Fishing Mini Event [ticket raffle results pg 86!]

Has this building always been here? You squint up at the storefront. The sign above the door looks like it was roughly cut out of a plank of scrap wood, with jagged letters hacked into its surface and filled in surprisingly neatly with a fresh coat of white paint. In sharp contrast, a sculpture of a mer-fable carved out of some sort of lighter wood curls elegantly around the sign, the details intricately life-like. A slightly lopsided placard dangles from the mer-fable's tail. A sheet of wood with the word "OPEN" painted on it has been nailed over top. No, you're sure you would have remembered a sign like this. It must be new.

There's a little flyer in the window that simply reads, "SPECIAL PROMOTION!!". Curiosity piqued, you head inside to check it out.

Ting-ling! The bell above the door jingles brightly as you step inside the store. It looks like some sort of fishing supply shop, with shelves upon shelves of every kind of equipment one could possibly need laid out in neat rows. The air smells slightly damp, though not in an unpleasant way, and you can hear the sound of running water somewhere. A quick look around confirms what appears to be some sort of aquascaping corner, with a shelf packed with aquariums containing all sorts of aquatic plants and piles of decorative rocks and driftwood.

"A customer! Hello!" A bright voice draws your attention to the counter at the back of the store.

You try not to stare as you approach the counter. Are you perhaps being pranked? The shopkeeper, or, who you can only assume is the shopkeeper, appears to be a school of fish awkwardly packed into the trenchcoat. They(?) wiggle at you as you step up to them, as if to wave.

Image
"Welcome to our—my humble establishment!" the shopkeeper chirps. "Fine weather we're having, don't you think? It's a great time to do some fishing, right? Get outside, enjoy some sunlight and fresh air?" They chortle a bit and continue before you even have a chance to answer, though you're a bit too stunned to speak at the moment anyway. "Ah who am I kidding, it's always a great time to do some fishing." The uppermost fish in the, er, bundle? tilts a little bit, as if it would be winking if it could. They pause for a moment, peering expectantly at you.

You nod, still rather perplexed.

"That's the spirit!" The shopkeeper nods along. "I'm sure we'll get along great, you and I; fellow anglers must stick together, eh? Speaking of which, I'm sure you've noticed, but we're a bit new around here. We—the shop, that is—are running a special opening promotion!" They gesture with their nose toward the countertop. A fishing rod, a spool of line, a tacklebox, and a thick, unmarked tome have been arranged neatly in a little display. "A full starter kit, half off!" The shopkeeper leans conspiratorially toward you. The slightly crumpled hat on their head (heads?), teeters precariously as they move. "Word is, there are some legendary fish swimming in the waters around here. They say that if you can manage to reel one up, it'll grant you untold luck! You'll need some special lures to catch their attention. Good thing we've got a whole set of them, eh?" They straighten up. "Aaand! We'll even add in a fishing guide! A big old book that'll teach you everything you need to know! Great deal, right?"

You can't help but be skeptical. Really? Magic fish? Noticing the expression on your face, the shopkeeper hastily adds, "Tell you what, why don't you take the whole set out for a spin? One week free trial! Our equipment's the best of the best, you'll be drowning in fish in no time! In fact, if you bring back some fish back here, you might win a prize!"

Image
You squint suspiciously at the shopkeeper. What's the catch? Why would a bunch of fish want even more fish? In fact, why is a school of fish running a fishing store?

The shopkeeper, or rather, the fish acting as the face of the shopkeeper, parts its jaws in a somewhat unconvincing toothy grin. "We—I haven't the foggiest idea what you mean. School of fish? Where? I assure you, I am a regular uh, person, and there's absolutely nothing magical in this shop. Er, aside from how magically perfect our merchandise is! I've never even heard of a barracuda." Moisture beads on their collective faces. Wait a minute, fish can't sweat, can they? Maybe those have always been there? "The only catch is the fish you'll be catching with our fabulous starter set!"

You're starting to feel a little bit bad for the shopkeeper. They seem to be trying very hard to sell you on this, so you suppose you'll play along for now. After all, the fishing kit sounds kind of interesting, and it's free for a week. It couldn't hurt to try. You agree to take it, if only because the poor shopkeeper looks like they're suddenly on the verge of tears.

"Great! Fantastic! Fin-tastic, even!" The shopkeeper brightens right up the moment you agree to take the kit. "Good luck! I look forward to hearing all about your marvelous successes in a week!"

What have you gotten yourself into..?

Welcome to Fables Fishing, a light little mini event! Cast your line and try your luck: you might win a prize, and maybe, just maybe, you'll reel up something extra special?! All users are welcome to participate, whether you own a fable or not. This will be a raffle with a guessing game twist—after all, fishing is all about both luck and skill! Prizes include mystery fables and 🎟️ tickets, which can be redeemed for semi-customs in the nursery or used to make MYOs and claimed artist entries official. This event will last 1 week, with the last round of fishing closing at CS rollover from August 10th → 11th. Read on to find out more about how to play!

✧ R U L E S

    - — General & Gameplay
Please follow all CS and species rules and guidelines.
You may make one cast per day. Edits are allowed up until the day's fishing closes. Please do not post the next day’s cast until I have posted to open the round!
You may select only one answer for each field on the form per cast. Double answers will be disqualified!
Please keep all discussions to the fanclub or discord. This thread is for gameplay only!
The lore for this event is just for fun! You don't have to consider it canon.

    - — Raffles
In order to avoid spoiling the riddles, the scoring sheet will be kept hidden until the end of the event. After guesses close, scoring rubrics and points sheets will be published so everyone can check their answers and verify their points!
If you win a fable that you can't quite click with, you may decline it. If you do this within 24 hours of the fable being rolled, you'll be given a 🎟️ ticket and the fable will be rerolled. Out of courtesy, please do not accept a fable that you know you don't want to keep!
After all fable rolls have been finalized, extra winners will be drawn to receive a 🎟️ ticket! The number of tickets to be awarded will be proportional to the number of participants.
Each user may only win one prize.

Have fun, and feel free to PM me, or ask in the fanclub or discord, if you have any questions!

How to play?

Postby Melonbread » Wed Jul 30, 2025 3:40 pm

✧ G A M E P L A Y

How do you play? Easy! Every day, you may make a cast by filling out the form below and posting it to this thread. Please be sure to fill it out carefully! Around CS rollover, I will post to close the current round and open the next one; after this point you may no longer edit previous forms.

The fishing lure that you select will determine the fable that you are trying to fish for! Each fable has a different set of preferred conditions. Just filling out a form will earn you 1 point, but guessing conditions correctly will earn you more points! Points will be added together into raffle pools for each specific fable: for example, if you use the Elegant Lure, your form will be judged off of the Elegant Fable's rubric, and any points you earn will be put into the Elegant Fable's raffle. 1 point = 1 raffle entry! You don't have to use the same lure every day, so feel free to distribute your casts between all the lures that interest you.

The more guesses you get correct, the more points you'll earn, and the more likely you are to win a prize! After every day for the first 5 days, I will also provide hints for each fable. Be sure to read each day's opening post carefully for clues!

Opening posts:

✧ L U R E S

Each lure corresponds to and resembles a different mystery fable, with fables and their lures having similar colors and/or markings!

Image
by Melonbread

Sharp Lure — -

A sleek lure painted in striking black, white, and orange. This lure features a carved wooden "crest" and a wicked-looking barbed point on the end. You're almost afraid to handle it, as if just touching it might cut you. The lure's ring and hooks shine gold, and parts of it have been painted with a matching metallic gold paint. You've never really seen its like before, but just looking at it you can imagine it cutting through the water.

Image
by Melonbread

Elegant Lure — -

This rounded lure resembles some sort of goldfish, though not in any colors that you've ever seen. It's painted in glossy white, with soft washes of pink, teal, and yellow over top. Translucent, almost glass-like fins have been affixed to the lure. Tiny beads have also been strung on to it. The whole thing seems to sway effortlessly when you put it in the water.

Image
by Melonbread

Odd Lure — -

You almost overlooked this one, due to the way it was tucked into a shadowy corner of the tacklebox. At first glance, it looks like nothing special: just your standard minnow lure carved from wood and painted in murky brown. When you hold it up to the light, however, the eyes and nose suddenly glow with brilliant light. Even the coppery metal bits glint peculiarly in the light.

Image
by alphanea

Regal Lure — -

A spoon lure painted with soft washes of lavender-grey, with delicate scale details. The long wire "tail" of the lure is decorated with miniature beads and banners in rich purples and golds reminiscent of royalty, and the whole thing seems to shimmer as you tilt it this way and that. There's something rather ornate about this lure. Despite being an inanimate object, it seems to have an air of importance.

Image
by wind song

Ominous Lure — -

A mottled black and red lure with softly shimmering fins. It's intricately-carved, with several detailed fins. It's just a small fishing lure, but you can't shake a peculiar feeling of unease whenever you see it. You can't really place why, exactly, but the painted eyes seem to follow you wherever you go. Of course, it can't actually see you... can it?

Image
by Snowflakette

Pretty Lure — -

This peachy lure sparkles in a rather eye-catching manner when light touches its painted surface. Its soft, scalloped fins are made of some sort of light, silky material that seems to dance at the slightest breeze. Two small barbels, or perhaps horns? poke up from the front. Even the small, painted eyes have a lovely sort of look to them. It looks like it'd be more at home in some sort of fancy boutique than a plain tackle box.

Image
by bezel

Mysterious Lure — -

A dark, blue-green lure painted with subtle stripes reminiscent of rippling water. Its carved eyes have been painted with a glossy, sapphire-blue hue, and it seems to bear a double set of pectoral fins. You're not actually sure what this lure is made of; unlike the others, which were presumably made of wood or metal, this one seems to be... slightly flexible? Maybe the fins could be made of some sort of stiff hair, but you're not sure about the body. This one comes with its own small length of wire, knotted at regular lengths to resemble beading.

✧ H A B I T A T S

    ✦ Lake — -
A large lake with smooth pebbles lining its gently sloping shores. The view over the water is lovely, though there isn't much shade, as all the trees grow several paces back from the shoreline. When the weather is right, the surface is a smooth, greenish-blue mirror. Surely there are a lot of fish in here!
    ✦ River — -
A wide, briskly-flowing river, its banks a mixture of chunky stones and gravel. A number of large trees overhang the river, providing comfortable patches of shade to sit in. It's hard to see through the bubbles kicked up by the churning current, but you spot an occasional flash of a fish in the water!
    ✦ Creek — -
A narrow, clear ribbon of water winding through the forest, shallow enough to see the dappled stones and fallen leaves at the bottom. Long grasses grow thickly at its edges, and you occasionally see flickers of movement in their shadows.
    ✦ Alpine stream — -
A crystal-clear stream of water fed by snowmelt, high above the treeline. The air is thin and bitingly cold, and the water is downright freezing. Maybe there's something in there, but you'll have to bundle up if you want to spend any amount of time fishing here.
    ✦ Marsh — -
The grass grows thickly here, and the ground is uncomfortably spongy, your footprints filling in with water every time you take a step. The air smells of decaying plant matter, and the water is blanketed in algae. Still, there are pools here and there that are deep enough to fish in, if you wanted to try?
    ✦ Pond — -
A small, quaint pond, ringed by tall reeds. The water is an opaque greenish hue. By day, ducks paddle languidly across the pond, and turtles sun themselves on the branches poking out of the water. By night, the reeds teem with the chirping songs of frogs and insects, and fireflies flicker gently in the darkness.
    ✦ Ocean — -
A harsh and jagged shore, dark, grey-blue waves laced with white foam churning and swirling against the rocks. The ocean stretches out to the horizon. Several large rock formations jut out over the water. It feels a bit precarious, but you might be able to catch something interesting if you cast out from there.
    ✦ Tidepool — -
Pools of water formed by the ebb and flow of the tides over a rocky beach. The water is clear, and the pools teem with life: colorful corals, anemones, molluscs, and starfish cling to the rocks, painting a mosaic in the water. Creatures of all kinds dart around in the water and hide themselves in the crevices. Watch your step; the rocks are slippery!
    ✦ Hot Spring — -
A milky, natural hot spring. The air is perpetually thick with steam and the faint rotten egg smell of sulphur, and the earth is black-grey with weathered volcanic rock. You're actually not sure if there are any fish in the water, but it's pretty tempting to take a dip yourself. Even the warm air is kind of soothing.
    ✦ Canal — -
A seemingly-abandoned irrigation canal, lined with neatly-cut stone bricks. It's pretty overgrown with grasses and moss by now, and there are a lot of sticks and leaves cluttering up the bottom, but you think you can spot some fish swimming around at the bottom.
    ✦ Cave — -
The water here is amazingly clear, due to the lack of the usual debris or even dust that you’d find outside. It almost seems like a shame to disturb the perfectly still surface with your line. The lack of direct sunlight makes the air fairly cold, and the caverns stretch far into unknown darkness. Better stay near the entrance, or else you might get lost.
✧ T I M E

    ✦ Morning — -
A lot of animals are especially active in the cooler, early hours of the day. Maybe fish are the same?
    ✦ Midday — -
The brightest and hottest hours of the day on average, when the sun is high in the sky. It's pretty relaxing to do a spot of fishing during the day.
    ✦ Evening — -
Dimmer and cooler than midday. Alongside morning, a lot of animals seem to be especially active around this time of day.
    ✦ Night — -
The darkest and coldest time of day on average. Some creatures only become active at night, but it can be a bit scary sitting around in the dark...
✧ W E A T H E R

    ✦ Clear — -
Clear skies, with few to no clouds. Pleasant weather.
    ✦ Overcast — -
Skies thick with clouds. A bit gloomy, but a nice reprieve from the sun on a hot day.
    ✦ Rain — -
You're going to get soggy, but a lot of fish seem to like this weather?
    ✦ Thunderstorm — -
Rain, but lightning and thunder besides. It seems kind of dangerous to be outside in weather like this.
    ✦ Gale — -
Howling winds so strong you fear you may be blown off your feet the moment you step outside. It almost makes you wish you were a fish yourself, so you could shelter under the water.
    ✦ Snow — -
Huh? This may or may not be in season, but you've experienced stranger things this week...
✧ D E P T H

    ✦ Surface — -
The brightest and warmest layer of water. Fish that eat insects especially like to hang out here.
    ✦ Middle — -
The middle of the water column. A lot of fish travel through here, alongside fish that hunt those fish.
    ✦ Bottom — -
The darkest and coldest part of any body of water. There are usually a lot of things for fish to hide in and under at this depth; many will come here to rest.
✧ R E E L

    ✦ Fast — -
A reeling style that pulls the lure at a steady, quick pace through the water. It’s flashy, and causes a lot of noise: good for more aggressive fish.
    ✦ Slow — -
A slow and steady reel style, less likely to startle a shy fish.
    ✦ Erratic — -
A style of reeling that mixes slow reels with random bursts of speed to mimic darting prey.

Armed with your new fishing kit, you set out into the wilderness and find a promising body of water. You stand before it for a bit, contemplating it. Er... now what?

You hastily dig the fishing guide out of your bag and flip it open. To your dismay, there appear to be barely any labels, let alone images or a table of contents. In fact, it seems to be more of a collection of stories and notes than an actual guide. You have no idea what you're looking for, so it'll take a while to decipher what is and isn't relevant. At least the basic tutorial at the front of the book seems clear enough? Might as well drop a line and see what bites while you sit down to read.

The conditions for each fable have been randomized, meaning they may or may not match their vibes! However, no two fables share the same habitat.

Round 1 of Fables Fishing is now open!
