🌈 Welcome to Gay Brunch! ☕

Gay Brunch is an unofficial art and writing WME event created to celebrate all the lovely lgbtqia+ equids in the community! The name of the event is inspired by a lil doodle I made of two iconic queer equid couples, Ennis and Jack (my beloveds) and Cheveyo and Magážu (belonging to the wonderful Sp00kEHours)!

While some prompts in the event will be more geared towards lgbtqia+ equids, the majority are open ended, and folks are encouraged to participate with any of their equids, regardless of orientation and/or gender identity! Absolutely everyone is welcome!

How It Works

There are 23 art and writing prompts posted below. Each prompt completed will earn you one ticket for the raffle. At the end of the event, all entries will be tallied and put into a draw, with a handful of prizes randomly distributed to entrants! The more you enter, the more likely you are to win a prize!

Minimum Entry Requirements

🌈 Art entries must be at minimum a greyscale sketch unless specified otherwise
🌈 Even as a doodle, the equid should still be recognizable (ex. you should be drawing a good approximation of their quip/markings)

🌈 You are encouraged to include dialogue in your drawings and/or written captions/descriptions alongside them!
🌈 Writing entries must be at minimum 100 words, unless the prompt specifies otherwise
🌈 You are definitely encouraged to go ham with your entries!! These are just the very base requirements <3

Prompts

Prompt 1: Draw or write about your equid’s queer awakening! Who was their first crush? How did they discover their gender identity?

Prompt 2: Haven’t you heard the news? Draw or write about a secret your equid discovered, and whether they decide to keep it to themselves or spill the tea!

Prompt 3: Draw your equid as your favourite meme!

Prompt 4: Write a poem your equid would recite to their crush, partner, or friend! (50 word minimum)

Prompt 5: Let’s spread the love around! Draw a piece of gift art for someone else in the community! One coloured sketch at minimum please.

Prompt 6: Pair up and create a collab art piece with another user of two equids interacting! (Please include both of your usernames under your entry)

Prompt 7: What’s the beef? Draw or write about an equid that’s had a falling out with another equid over something silly! Will they be able to reconcile?

Prompt 8: Third wheel? I say, the more the merrier! Draw or tell me about an equid in a poly/open relationship. Is there good communication between all their partners, or room for improvement?

Prompt 9: Draw or write about something that gives your equid euphoria/self confidence!

Prompt 10: Draw or write about your equid’s favourite “outfit”! This might be tack, a beautiful dress, mud and flowers, or anything in between! Go wild with your interpretation!

Prompt 11: Everyone needs a ride or die! Write a story about something funny that happened to an equid and their best friend.

Prompt 12: All gay brunches need some great drinks! If your equid was a drink, what would they be? Draw or describe this drink! (50 word minimum)

Prompt 13: Create an abstract piece of art that represents your equid’s identity!

Prompt 14: Draw your equid with their pride colours! 🏳️‍🌈 Whether this is represented as a flag or something else is up to you. Coloured sketches for this prompt please!

Prompt 15: Write a story about a time your equid put everything on the line to impress someone! Did they get rejected or manage to woo them?

Prompt 16: Use your non-dominant hand to draw one of your equids! If you’re ambidextrous, try to draw them upside down, then flip the canvas rightside up at the end!

Prompt 17: Create a drag persona for one of your equids! For art, draw them in their signature makeup and outfit. For writing, describe their look and a song they’d perform to and why (CS appropriate please). Make sure to give them a fun name in each case!

Prompt 18: Draw or write about an object that holds a special significance to one of your equids!

Prompt 19: Draw or write about a place that has an important memory tied to it for one of your equids!

Prompt 20: This whole event was inspired by a silly doodle of equids gossiping and having a crisis over holding a mug with hooves, so it’s your time for you to make your own ‘gay brunch’!

For art, draw your equids (and maybe your friend’s equids!) sitting at a table interacting, and title it “Gay Horse Brunch” OR alternatively “[Word of your Choice] Horse Brunch”! Get creative with what kind of brunch it is! “Goth Horse Brunch”, “Sad Horse Brunch”, “Himbo Horse Brunch” to give you some ideas!

For writing, write a small scene about a handful of WMEs gossiping at a table in a restaurant! In other words, bring the situation depicted in the “Gay Horse Brunch” doodle to life!

BONUS PROMPTS

Prompt 21: Colour in one of your WMEs on the okekai “Design a Mug - Gay Brunch” gift lines! In order to get access, you must have completed 1 other prompt already. I have added most folks who have submitted but please feel free to leave a comment if you still need to be added!

Prompt 22: I was out of town for Pride this year, and I really missed being a part of the parade! 😢

To continue the festivities, I wanna see drawings of equids doing their version of a pride parade! Coloured sketches with a minimum of 2 equids please! ‘Parade’ is open to interpretation, but I’d love to see pride flags, banners with fun sayings, ect. Go crazy!! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Entry: ft. Jethro & Phoenix

Jethro takes a deep breath in and slowly exhales as he sinks to the soft grass. He was finally alone, the cool autumn breeze pushes his forelock out of his eyes as the sounds of his herd ebb up the hill he is perched upon. His herd had just welcomed a new young stallion to their ranks. Jethro huffs at the thought of the young bachelor; he was sure the newcomer was still using his charms and stunni-no... insufferable smile to wrap them around his tail.

Phoenix was his name. Jethro wasn't opposed to new herd members, but there was something about this one that made his stomach feel... odd. He gazed up at the stars when he heard hooves crunching on the grass behind him. Jethro turned, expecting to see his mother or one of the other equids looking to stargaze. To his disbelief, none other than Phoenix saunters over the peak of the hill. He takes in another deep breath and prepares for dreaded small talk. But Phoenix says nothing. The younger stallion glances at him as he lowers to the ground and tucks his legs under himself. Jethro holds his gaze for a moment longer before turning his head back to the sky.

"I won't bother trying to woo you with chatter," Phoenix says softly into the space between them. That space, speaking of which, seemed closer to Jethro than he thought it was just a moment before.

Jethro swings his head back towards Phoenix, his emerald eyes meeting Phoenix's blue ones. Jethro hesitated one more moment before letting the flutter in his stomach overtake the rest of his body with soft jitters. He was suddenly aware of where every hair on his body was, how close he was to the other stallion, who's body heat was suddenly enveloping Jethro's own. Jethro took a sharp inhale, trying to will his feelings away. Phoenix smiled and rolled ever so slightly towards the older stallion. Jethro had heard and seen what the other equids were like when they were... enamored. And he prayed to the stars that he wasn't falling like they had. [word count: 354]

Entry: ft. Dove, Phoenix, Jethro, & Riddle

Dove inhaled sharply at what she saw. Phoenix... together... with... a MARE? She turned and started sprinting through the thicket and brush away from the two equids with a mischievous smile on her face. She couldn't believe it. Phoenix had been the herd's most flirty and eligible bachelor for even before she was born, but for some reason, she'd never really seen him with a mare before now. She'd never seen him or her brother, Jethro, show any real interest in mares, it's like they were glued at the hip.

The yearling rolled her eyes: she'd never understand why Phoenix would find that broody, dark stallion so interesting. She loved her brother, of course, and he can be very kind and sweet if he deems you worthy of his affections. But he was often cold to others and quiet; it feels like he's always judging. Suddenly Dove crashed into something solid, red, and strangely equid shaped. She was stopped dead in her tracks so quickly she could see the hair of her tail surpass her head.

Jethro winced from the impact. "What the... Dove? Watch where you're going, are you ok?" He lowered his head to her smaller form and began examining and sniffing at her, his green eyes sharp with concern.

"Jethro! Ugh, I'm so sorry" Dove sputtered and shook her head, willing the forest to stop spinning. She took a step back from him, shoeing his scrutinizing nose away. The whole reason she was running in the first place slammed back into her mind. Her eyes widened and she opened her mouth, the words almost pouring out. She closed her mouth and thought for a moment.

It finally clicked in her head that the mare Phoenix was with was not one from their own herd. Though she didn't know the mystery mare's name, she's seen her before; their herds shared a fence line along the very back of their territory. Dove pondered why Phoenix would keep her a secret. Their own herd was small enough that it was almost expected that there would be mingling from new equids. Maybe it was the mystery mare's herd that would judge their relationship.

Jethro brought her mind back from it's own depths. "What were you running from? It didn't seem like a casual trot through the woods," he pushed for an answer.

"Oh, um, well..." Dove panicked. Should she blow their cover? They seemed to want to stay a secret... But it was Phoenix and Jethro, they were the best of friends; closer than any equids could be, whispering and laughing at joke only they understood, spending all their time together. She could understand if Phoenix was scared to ruin their friendship by adding a mare into the mix.

But before she had to make a decision herself, Jethro raised his head to look at something behind her. Dove turned her head to see Phoenix and the mystery mare trailing a ew steps behind him emerge from the dense trees. Dove stepped out from between the two stallions, a jolt anxiety running through her.

Jethro's expression lifts as he smiles softly. "Hello Riddle."

The mystery mare, Riddle, brightens as she stands up straighter. "Hey Jethro!" The two step towards each other and touch noses briefly. Dove takes a deep breath, she hadn't realized she's been holding it. She guesses she doesn't have to worry about spilling that secret to at least one less equid.

Entry: Fig (he/they)

It took a while for Fig to wrap their head around their identity, because being called a stallion never felt wrong. When he was growing up, Fig was just Fig. Everyone in the herd knew almost everything there was to know about each other, so there wasn't ever the space or need to question things further.

It wasn't until they grew up a bit and started venturing outside the herd that Fig started to feel a bit... odd about it all. WMEs are sexually dimorphic — the males and females are visibly distinct — so of course equids would refer to him as a male without inquiry. It wasn't the label that Fig had issues with, Fig thinks of themself as a stallion, but it's just one small part of what makes Fig, it doesn't capture the entirety of his self-image. And, it's definitely not the first one that comes to his mind. It felt weird that it was the first thing others thought of, though. Felt constraining. Especially when it brought about expectations of how he should act.

The "awakening moment" wasn't a light suddenly switching on or a puzzle piece clicking into place. It was slowly working out the shape of their surroundings as the dawn rose, building a puzzle without the picture based on how the pieces fit together. A passive inquery that sometimes crested into frustration or joy. It was hard to track the progress as it was mostly internal rumination, periodically bookmarked by how conversations about these feelings evolved. The first time Fig put it all into words was in a chat with Strudel that turned into a vent session. Fig got so impassioned that anyone looking in would've assumed Strudel was getting a verbal lashing (he could have that effect on equids).

"I'm a guy, but I'm not just a guy!"

The proper terminology would come later, but if Fig had to pick a singular moment, they'd pick that one. It wasn't an awakening, just a moment where he realized he's been awake for a while already. Fig has always been Fig, it just took a while to find the exact shape that they took.

Entry: From Evren, to Sundae
Both still need a lot of emotional growth before they get to the point of being together, so this is from some indeterminate amount of time in the future
(I haven't written a poem since like, 9th grade English class and I frankly remember nothing. My deepest apologies for any ignorant butchering of rules, please bear with me XD)

Your fire has cracked this hardened earth,
and from its soft dirt you do not shy away.
So how could I not reach in return
to each lovely, shining ray?

Even when clouds blanket the sky grey,
my heart stays steady
knowing your presence, though elsewhere,
is guiding someone's way.

Many are drawn to your light,
yet are too blinded to closer gaze.
I'm not such a fool
to believe your spark never frays
and in those times, I hope,
you'll accept my gentle praise.

My dearest sunny day,
night shall always come
but it shan't eternal stay.
Even when the sky divides us,
makes us feel leagues apart,
we'll meet at the horizon,
where light can receive
a kiss from softened clay.

Entry: Strix

If you were to ask Strix a few years ago what her favourite outfit is, she'd answer that it's her driving harness. She'd explain how she always loved how dashing she looks kitted out in gleaming dark leather, mane and tail braided in complex patterns of bright ribbon. After her injury and (consequent) early retirement from driving competitions, Strix has had a lot of time on her hooves to think. She realized she didn't actually like the look. What she truly loved was the feeling of purpose the harness gave her, the physical feed-back loop of her strength.

While she's long since healed enough to pull again, Strix has no desire to entire another competition; her new home is happy to accommodate this. She still gets the opportunity to pull visitors — to feel her muscles sing and watch the awe on human faces at her work — without the pressure of infinite improvement. Now, when it comes to outfits, Strix much more prefers her home's other business: historical tack. Her favourite is a recreation of a steel crinet and chanfron set, carefully gilt in swooping vines and flying birds. Its a gorgeous unity of practicality and beauty that pairs uniquely with Strix's brassy coat. It gives her the same feeling of purpose but it buoyed by the history of the piece and a firmer understanding of herself and what she likes. She doesn't need to pull a carriage to feel strong.

Entry: Cheesecake's Hotshake!

(I'm a fool who impulsively deleted the oekaki post cuz I was having a weird day. Here's what I wrote for it)

Prompt 12 for The WME Gay Brunch fan event, featuring my gal Cheesecake! This took longer than it should have lol

I realize now only as I'm posting that "hotshake" implies its spicy. It's not. This is just a London Fog but with whipped cream and a bunch of sweet sauces to mimic Cheesecake's quipping (+ a raspberry to match her eye ;3)

Context: I love drinks that are almost entirely or are entirely steamed/frothed milk! I've been asked why, and my answer is that "it tastes like if a milkshake was designed to be hot." So. Hotshake.

Also: yes I make my hot chocolate with frothed cream or milk instead of water. Do it. It will change your life (and then you'll be cursed because literally no food-serving establishment makes hot chocolate with dairy instead of water)

Prompt number 12 honorable mention Grandpa Snowy
Entry This guy loves making a mess, but in a totally fun and chaotic way. What else is better for the summer heat than homemade lemonade? And what’s more satisfying than crushing lemons with hooves? As long as you wear goggles lol. He learned that the hard way. Now most of the time when you make lemonade it’s just water, sugar and crushed lemon with juice but if you want a special flavor some places will throw in some extra fruit. Koh has three favorite types of lemonade he can make, he likes making a quick blue raspberry lemon aid but the syrup makes his coat blue and he looks more like his grand-dad so this would be the one he would be as nobody would dare drink a light and dark gray lemonade. I would describe him as lemonade, because he’s very sweet, but I would describe the sour as frustratingly annoying. Which as a boy who loves love, he can be quite a handful and over the top.

A second all year favorite is strawberry lemonade, it’s less messy when he makes the full fruit version and it’s has a slightly higher sweet flavor that balances out the sour. But his very favorite lemonade is seasonal, the fruit in question comes into season late summer/early fall and picking it himself is a challenge but the alternative is accidentally wearing the syrup rather then having stained hooves for awhile. The lemonade is prickly pear lemonade. So he may have a sore nose when you see him. The syrup version is called Sunset lemonade which is pretty AND refreshing. (Realized this was them as the drink after instead of what you would bring to brunch for a drink. Keeping this for lore)
