Beaumont Collie Contest Hall

Welcome!

This is the place where we love to see development of your collies through various fun challenges held every 1-2 weeks, with prizes to be won! Please be sure to check the main rules, and any specific rules for each new challenge. Prompts will generally alternate between a more simple one lasting 1 week, and one that requires more effort lasting 2 weeks. Prizes will vary, with lots of different things on offer! Each contest will list the prizes for that round. Prompt difficulty/prize value ratio will adjust as we get a feel for this!



Rules

➛ You must own at least one Beaumont collie to participate. Looking for your first collie? Check out our open adopts or join the discord where there are often opportunities new users!
➛ Everything entered must follow chicken smoothie rules.
➛ The entry must be completed by you. In the event of work not by you (such as a coloured in base), be sure to credit. AI is forbidden, save for spell check.
➛ Anything entered here cannot have been made before the contest start date.
➛ You may only submit one entry for each contest. You're welcome to answer the prompt as many times as you wish with different collies, but only share your favourite here!
➛ You can post the whole entry, or link to it if posted elsewhere, eg. Kennel Threads. If it includes things from before the contest just explain which bit is for the entry, eg. if linking to a profile page you could say "the history section only!"

Explain how one of your collies got their name!
This must be a collie you haven't written the name origin of before.

Contest 2


Draw one of your collies at the beach doing their favourite thing! For example, swimming, looking in rock pools, digging holes.

Take a photo of something one of your collies would appreciate and tell me why!

Requirements: 1 clear photograph taken by you + at least a full sentence description.

Contest 4


Tell me the story of how two (or more) of your collies became partners/mates!

Requirements: 600 words minimum

Contest 5


Give one of your collies that doesn't already have one a theme song and explain how it matches their personality and/or story!

Requirements: CS appropriate song + 100 words

Contest 6


Draw two of your collies interacting in some way! Minimum of a coloured headshot where they are clearly interacting.
All completed entries will receive an edit voucher to be used on any single edit if your choice, eg. Tail, or ears, or cheek fluff.

Requirements: 2 lined/clean sketch coloured headshots interacting

Write out the personality of one of your collies that doesn't have one yet!

Requirements: 200+ word personality

Contest 8


Tell me or show me a relationship between two of your collies that changed over time!
Eg. Enemies to lovers, strangers to discovering they're family, or anything else.

Requirements: Writing: 600 words including "before" and "after" OR Art: 2 fullbody sketches, a "before" and "after". Each pieces should include both the collies recognisable through characterisation/sketched markings.

Contest 9


Draw or write about one of your collies in "an alternate universe"! This could be them as a different species, them with magic powers, or anything else!
If your collies already have another form/magic, you can use this as a chance to develop it.
If a collie was based on an existing au (eg. Oc/character came before the collie) it will not count for this contest, apologies!

Requirements: 500+ words and/or art - minimum fullbody coloured clean sketch

Colour in one of your collies on an editable base!
Credit of the base MUST be given.

Requirements: recognisable fully coloured in collie with base credit.

Contest 11


Bring one of your collies' story to life!
This can be their backstory, a relationship developing, or another key life event. There are a few different options/mediums to choose from outlined below.

C: 5+ unique rough sketch & rough colour Picture Music Video/Animatic

What scented candle most represents one of your collies and why?
This can be a real one or a made up one such as "pine scent mixed with clean linen".

Contest 13


Tell me about or show me one of your collies' relationship with a pup or litter of pups.
You can choose an official breeding they've had or a pup from your lore, anything is fine!
Alternatively, you can answer with an expecting parent (or two) think about their unborn pups or imagining future pups.

Requirements: 600 words or a rough coloured fullbody of parent and pup interacting.

Contest 14


Take two photographs!
The first must be of something that gives off the visual vibes of a collie you own!
Eg. A silver birch tree for a black and silver brindle or a cloudy sky for a blue piebald.
The second is inspiration for a mystery custom if rng chooses you as the winner 👀

Requirements: 2 photographs taken by you specifically for this, not previously taken photos. Be sure no sensitive information (where you live or other people) are in the photos. That cannot be of a real dog.

Contest 15


Interview your collie!
Below the entry from is a second code for you to copy and paste. It includes questions to 'ask' your collie and space for you to write their reply. Answers should provide the information but told through their voice and show their personality. Eg. "How old are you?" could be answered by a grumpy older dog saying "none of your business, I'm old enough to know that's rude" or an excitable pup answering "5 months and 21 days!". You're welcome to include actions in square brackets such as [he shifts nervously] "who's asking?".

Requirements: Average of 2 sentences per question. You're welcome to answer a few with a single word if it fits your character as long as a few are answered with longer replies. No max.

Contest 18


Create a collie "friend group"! This must consist of 5+ collies you think would be great friends, and describe the dynamic of this by giving each a title and description. Eg. "The Leader" who makes decisions, "The Glue" who keeps them all together, and so on.
If you do not own 5 collies you can make up "NPC" collies.

Requirements: 5+ collies (link to them). Each should have a "title" and a short description. + 50 words explaining the overall friendship group's history and/or dynamic.

Wilder unfortunately grew up as a stray, roaming the streets for his next meal and looking for warm, dry areas to sleep. He was abandoned on the side of a dirt road at about 4 months old, and he never understood why. His life changed completely when he was picked up from one of the workers at Secunda Kennels. She had gotten a call about a lost, confused puppy, and knew she had to come to its rescue. She hopped in her truck, and scouted the road for miles until she came across a weak, skinny pup in the brush a few feet from the road. “Here, puppy! Come on!” she said in an exciting and high pitched tone. It was no use, the pup didn’t trust humans anymore and all he did was growl. Prepared, she tossed a few treats trying to coax him out of the tall grass. It was just enough to get him loaded up into her truck and back to the facility for a vet check. The name “Wilder” stuck because he was absolutely wild and borderline feral when he first came to the kennel. After some time, he became a whole new dog full of love and confidence.

Collie Entering: Hope’s Look At Them Beans “Cash”

The first independent foray into the dog show scene by Hope Creek Kennels was with a scruffy pup, picked out by the breeder for his easy-going personality. The handlers of the kennel were pair of brothers hailing originally from Georgia and a fan of classic country, especially the senior handler, Andrew Jacobs. A listener to Johnny Cash’s classic music in his youth, Andrew wanted to name the pup after one of his songs, and wanted the call name to be Johnny to begin with. His brother convinced him out of it, settling on the tried and true call name of Cash, though that left the dog’s proper epithet to be chosen.

Of Cash’s songs, a few stuck out; Ring of Fire, I Walk The Line, Ghost Riders In The Sky, and I’ll Say It’s True were all considered as potential titles, but the final decision was Look At Them Beans, by his brother Jay’s suggestion. The name, to those unfamiliar, is a bit silly and whimsical in a way Andrew liked to be in general, but the song itself is an upbeat but emotional song. Like the song itself, Cash is to be a start of something new and great, even in spite of rough patches in the past.

The name Vagabond means “someone who wanders”, a name that I wish I could say had a deeper meaning. Truth is, it came from the Santa Clara Vanguard drum corps’s show of the same name. It was the first world-class show that I saw in person, with one of my best friends. My partner also toured that summer, although with a different group. We were there to see him, but the prospect of watching other really good corps was also exciting. The show starts with a song that’s not CS friendly I’m pretty sure, so I won’t name it. However, the opening line says “peace of mind”, which is where his registered name comes from. The show’s title is his actual name, and I felt it was a pretty amazing tribute to a really good band. Maybe a tribute to my own history, finding my own place by being in my high school's band. Both marching and concert bands gave me a sense of self. I have a deep connection to music, have learned a lot of lessons (both good and bad), and have met a number of amazing people, all through my time in that band hall. To have a collie that represents some of what band means to me, his SCV green eyes and dark red points, is special. At least to me. So maybe, his name does have a deeper meaning.
Vagabond’s own story is slightly different. He had a wandering mind from the start. He was started on agility, then herding, trying to keep his mind somewhere familiar. His old home tried to keep him bonded onto something, like collies or a herd, but it never stuck. Eventually, his bed was found empty one morning, and his owners futilely put up missing posters. He landed some almost 3 hours away at SLK, dusty and thirsty. When he was taken in to be scanned for a microchip, and his old owners were contacted, they admitted that he’d been a lot of work. It was too much to keep a dog that would wander off of their property so often, sometimes over the nearby state border, and it’d be best if he could be held over there, at least for a while. Eventually, he started keeping Vienna company, and no one could deny he seemed happier here. Vagabond’s ownership was eventually transferred to SLK, and the chapter on his past closed. He misses some of his old friends, but he’s made up for it here.

Collie Entering: HBK If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It| "Polly"

For the first few weeks of her life, Polly didn't have a name. During birth her dam had to have an emergency c-section due to how large the litter was, both in terms of puppy size and amount of puppies. Polly was the runt of her 6 siblings and was almost completely missed by the vets performing the surgery. Back at home, Polly struggled to keep up with her siblings, often being the last one to nurse and was frequently pushed around by her much larger and stronger siblings. The breeders tried their best to try and facilitate her wellbeing, but every night felt like a risk, one that worried them enough that they didn't feel comfortable naming the tiny puppy.

However, things started to turn around once she opened her eyes and finally started gaining weight. She was still much smaller than her siblings, but she made up for it in personality. The breeders named her "Phoenix", a symbol of new beginnings and rebirth. When she was old enough to go to her new home with me at Hedera Bay Kennels, I was conflicted on her name. I loved the meaning behind it invoked by her rough early puppyhood, but a few months into her new life, she was actually growing quite a lot and was even surpassing the size of other dogs around her age at the kennel. However, her personality did not scream "Phoenix". She was insightful and fickle, not at all a burst of fiery energy like her name would suggest.

Ultimately Pheonix became Polyphemus or just Polly for short. She was was named after the species name for the Atlantic horseshoe crab, an aquatic creature that has remained practically the same since prehistoric times. Her show name, "If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It" is a nod towards the animal's biologically perfected form. The name is a bit ironic given her early struggles, but I believe it's a testament to her determination despite all odds.

Thalassa was born next to the sea, where the waves crashed into the rocks and the wind sang through the foam. Even as a newborn the water seemed to recognise her, almost like the water itself had whispered her name in the night. With every step she took, the water followed her, like an old friend who didn’t want to let go.

When others played among the sand dunes, Thalassa spent her time at the beach listening to the sea. The waves spoke to her, told her about the depths and the power and patience of the tide. No one understood why she could hear the waves, but Thalassa didn’t care. The sea understood her. There she was free.

One day a storm came, wild and furious. The others fled while Thalassa stayed. With her fur wet and steady steps she faced the wrath of the storm. In this chaos she could hear the sea’s voice more clearly than ever before. It was then she understood: she wasn’t just born beside the sea, she carried it within her.

After the storm had passed, the elders started to call her Thalassa, an old name connected to the sea. Not only because she lived beside it, but because she was just like it: deep, mysterious and untameable. The water became her compass, her strength, and her home.

Ever since, Thalassa has carried her name with pride, as a reminder of where she has come from, and of all the things the sea has taught her. And when she scans the horizon, she knows the sea will call her onwards, toward new adventures.
