General Breed Information

Ferox Welsh Ponies (pron. VEH-rocks) are a hardy pony that originated in Wales. They have fine heads with slightly dished noses, short, muscular legs and stocky bodies. While small - averaging 12 hands - feroxes make good riding horses and are sure-footed owing to the mountains of their origin country. Ferox Welsh Ponies, their name meaning fierce, are known for their big personalities, including a streak of bravery that seems to run through the entire breed. Feroxes are strong but easily handled, making them ideal for all riders. They are frequently seen in bay, black, chestnut and grey, but many other colours have been recorded to appear in the breed, including appaloosa, paint markings and dilutions like champagne.

    ──── 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒 ────────────────────────────────

Height: Feroxes can range from 11.0hh to 13.3hh. Hands (hh) is the measurement of a horse's height at the withers. Each hand is 4 inches, so after .3 the number rises. For example: 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 12.0hh and so on.

Breeding Slots: Feroxes have five (5) breeding slots in total, regardless of gender. Any ponies owned from version 1 or 2 are not permitted to breed at this time, and are considered sterile. V3 ponies retain 2 breeding slots regardless of if they were used or not and are ineligible to have additional slots purchased. Additional slots can be purchased for version 4 ponies with a maximum of ten (10) total.

Eye Colours: Eyes can be any natural or unnatural color. Heterochromia (two or more eye colors) is a rare trait.

Chimerism: Chimerism is the fusion of two twins within the womb. Because of this, the resulting foal will have two entirely separate coats, each with their own markings. Heterochromia is common in chimeric foals as well. Chimerism generally only happens within breedings, and is quite rare. These special horses may be released in milestone adopts or through special events on occasion. Members are not allowed to request chimeric customs.

Somatic Mutations: Somatic mutations happen when a certain gene or genes get turned off on certain parts of the coat. For example, the mutation would change parts of a buckskin horse to bay, or bay to black. White or any other markings are not affected by this mutation and will go over the top of it. Somatic mutations will be available via rolled breedings involving at least one parent with the mutation, customs, adopts, and events. Rolled breedings do not guarantee the foal will have a somatic mutation.

Unnatural Coloration: Feroxes will never have any unnatural coat colors. There may be dilutions or traits that give the pony a certain color hue or unnaturally shaped marking, but they will always remain generally natural colors.

Breed Specific Traits

common (c) | uncommon (uc) | rare (r) | limited (l)

    Spring 2020 markings:
    Tarnish (Spring Event 2020)
    Hooded (Spring Event 2020)
    Gilded (Spring Event 2020)

    Tarnish - TN (c)
    Examples: E010, E026
Tarnish is an incomplete dominant gene, meaning it displays differently with one copy (TNtn) than two copies (TNTN). Tarnish causes excessive melanin production in the hair and skin, darkening the hair or turning it completely black. Darkened patches have sharp, ragged edges and points. It affects the barrel of the body first, then appears on the head and legs. It never covers the whole body; at it's maximum it leaves the shoulders untouched. Where patches of the marking meet, they tend to have tendril-like connections between them. Tarnish remains the same size and darkness throughout the pony's lifetime.

    Hooded - Hd (c)
    Examples: E019, E021
Hooded is a white splash-like marking that usually covers the head and neck, and causes white leg markings. Whether there are one or two copies does not affect its expression. At maximum it covers the whole head and neck, the front legs except for the elbows, and may extend slightly into the back along the topline. At minimum, it causes minor white coronets or heels on the front legs, covers the whole face (some colour may remain on the cheek/jaw), and it always covers the ears. It affects the mane where it touches it and commonly causes blue eyes, especially if it is particularly extensive.

    Gilded - Gl (c)
    Examples: E020
Gilded causes golden shading from the topline of the horse, making it look as though it has been cast in gold. Gilded does not deviate very much in the extent of expression. The base colour of the horse slightly affects the colour of gilded - lighter on light bases, darker on dark bases, but the difference is quite subtle. Gilded bays and chestnuts often have a more yellow-orange base coat, and gilded blacks are more likely to sun-fade or have a bronze/brown cast to the coat. White markings always cover Gilded. Gilded may cause the eyes to be gold, orange or reddish.

    Winter 2023 markings:

    Icicles - Ic (c)
    Examples: WE002
White marking shaped like icicles. Starts at the topline of the horse and can be any size/amount.

Snowflake Birdcatcher Spots - +snowflake bc spots (r)
    Examples: WE003
Birdcatcher spots shaped like snowflakes, can be any size/amount.

    Frozen Fissures - Fis (l)
    Examples: WE004
Mimics the cracking of ice on a frozen lake, can be any size/amount.

Retired - no longer in use
Frost - Ice blue dilution at 30% or lower.
Candy Cane Appaloosa - Spots on appaloosa are shaped like candy canes
