You're all too grateful to snuggle in your bed after the first day of the festival, exhuasted from a long day filled with sugary food and playing games. As soon as your head touches your pillow, you find yourself not in your bed at all, but somewhere high in the clouds. It appears to be dawn; the clouds around you are a mix of soft greys, pinks, and faint yellows. They're so thick that you can't see the sky in any direction, though the area is well-lit still. Despite how high up you would need to be for there to be such thick, fluffy clouds, it isn't cold. In fact, it's pleasantly warm - you could just go back to sleep right here if you wanted...

"Oh, good, you're finally here."

You startle back into wakefulness at the sound of a voice. You look above you, and find Nai'a resting luxuriously on a cloud across from you. The light seems almost focused around her, framing her ethereally and making her stand out despite how similar the clouds look to her fur. She's scowling at you.

"It took you long enough." She huffs. She sweeps a paw out wide, gesturing broadly to the area. "This is Dreamland. And, in case you don't know, I'm Nai'a." You begin to ask her what's going on, but she beats you to it. "You're asleep, and you're in one of my dreams, in a way, not yours. You're in complete control of yourself, but you can't change anything about this place."

You're silent for a moment, trying to work out how this was possible. You'd never heard of anything like this before, but then again, that's probably what Nai'a wanted.

"Oh, don't look so worried. I'm not going to hurt you." Nai'a rolls all three of her eyes, which somehow seems more condescending than the usual two. "You're safe here. No nightmares, just... fluffy clouds." She pointedly kicks up a puff of cloud with her forepaw. She watches it drift away for a moment with a disdainful expression on her face before turning back to you. "Anyways, I brought you here because I want you to help me. If you're in, there will be corporeal - or 'real life' - rewards for you. If you're not, then you'll wake up in your bed, perfectly safe, and have a normal dream when you go back to sleep."

Nai'a looks down at you from her cloudy perch. "I'm so glad you decided to help out!" She smiles, and you realize it's the first time you've seen a genuine smile on her face. Huh. She leaps from the clouds and glides down to your level, swirling elegantly as she does.
Showoff.
"I need you to collect stardust for me in the waking world. You'll find it at night somewhere high up, like hills." She explains. "Stardust only falls from the sky once a year, so get as much as you can. I'll give you your reward once you bring some back."

Nai'a smiles at you as you bring back the stardust, though you get the idea it isn't quite as real as before. "Took a while it find some, hm?" She remarks, carefully taking the glittering dust for you. She looks down at it in her paws, shifting the container to watch it glitter. Suddenly, Nai'a's middlemost eye looks up at you, causing you to flinch.
With her other two eyes still focused on the stardust, she speaks. "I need you to gather fairy feathers for me next. Honestly, you can probably find them anywhere, so long as nobody goes there often. Hidden groves, ancient springs, stuff like that." She explains. "They shimmer like hummingbird feathers, but they're bigger and more colorful. Don't look around more than you have too; fairies don't like others near their homes, and they especially hate being seen." Well, that sounds mildly ominous. Is that why she's sending you to go look instead of going herself? "Good luck."

Nai'a counts the feathers you gave her, picking up one and tilting it to watch it shine in the light. "Well done. You can now call yourself one of the few who stepped foot where fairies did." There's a certain gravity to her voice that makes you wonder exactly how rare what you just found is.
"Don't get too proud about it. You got lucky." You're reminded of her telling you to be careful when she sent you searching for the feathers; were you in danger?
Before you can ask, Nai'a speaks again. "There's a very rare flower known as Aurorae's Heart - it only grows in a valley far in the north. I'll show you how to get there." Well, that sounds way easier than the vague places she's sent you searching for before! Suddenly, Nai'a's face is just inches away from yours, her piercing eyes pinning you to the spot. "Only. Pick. One." She says firmly. "And tell no one." She pulls away just to look down her nose at you as she speaks. "There are those out there who would take all that remains, to keep others from using them. They must be protected. Understand? Good."

The world around you fall away, Nai'a included. For a moment, the world is cold and black. Then, you find yourself in the air, gliding just above the trees. You can practically feel the whistle of the wind in your face.
The dream moves you along at a quick place, touring you along an almost-familiar path to a nearby forest. Once above the forest, you quickly descend, bursting past the canopies to weave through the trees. It's strangely relaxing, in a way. Just as you begin to enjoy the scenery, you realize you're on-course to crash straight into a massive dogwood tree. You try to move or wake up to no avail, and crash directly into the unforgiving bark...

...but there is no pain - and no waking up, unfortunately. As you slowly recover, you realize that you're no longer in the forest. Instead, you're in a valley walled in by tall, jagged mountains. The area is devoid of trees or animals, but practically overflowing with sparkling lilies. Their colors shift and wave slowly, giving the appearance of an aurora growing from the earth.

The tree was a portal?

Something's off this time.
You could almost swear that, for a second, the clouds were a dark and foreboding grey - entirely unlike the dawn-colored pastels you had gotten used to seeing. It's only a flash, but strange nonetheless.
Nai'a is waiting for you not in her usual spot, but instead where she usually swoops down to meet you. You approach curiously and offer up the flower you gathered. She accepts it silently, but spends no time inspecting it, instead only setting it down one the clouds for it to be enveloped.
There's something off about her. She's too still, too silent. The air around her feels thick with tension. Out of the corner of you eye, you could almost swear you see a quick flash of lightning. You realize it's actually quite cold in the dreamscape today, too. Even if not for the first time, you being to feel afraid of Nai'a, of what she can do and the fact you're more than likely trapped here.
"I haven't sent you on a truly difficult or dangerous mission yet, and really, I don't want to." Nai'a speaks with a perfectly even and icy voice. "But, if my fears are true, then this may be the most perilous mission I'll send you on." You swallow a lump in your throat and tell her you're ready to hear it.
Suddenly, Nai'a smirks. "I need you to go grab some moss for me." She's so suddenly back to normal that you're stunned, only managing to cough out a "Really?" in response. "Really." Nai'a confirms. Her smile quickly fades. "The catch here is that it only grows in the Bog of Nightmares."
Oh.
"Oh, don't look so afraid. Grimm can smell fear - it will give you away." She says dismissively, which does absolutely nothing to help. "Just don't go in too deep and you should be fine. You're looking for glowmoss. True to its name, it glows a bright neon green, you literally can't miss it. Get me some and I'll reward you, but feel free to run if you see a wisp before you find any. They report directly to Grimm; they'll probably find you before you can find the moss if the wisps spot you."
How comforting.

It's definitely darker when you first show up. The clouds are dark and tumultuous, swirling at your feet. A shrieking wind tears at you, causing you to stumble.
Just as you right yourself, the world returns to normal. Suddenly. Like nothing was ever wrong.
Nai'a is waiting for you in the same place as yesterday. She smiles widely at you - revealing fangs you didn't know she had - and you get the terrible feeling that you shouldn't ask what just happened.
"Welcome back." Her smile adjusts to a more normal size, but it doesn't seem any less fake. "I'm worried that sending you so close to the wisps may have been too dangerous. Today, I need you to get me a gemstone from a cave in the northeast - the Cave of Eyes. Neither the cave nor the gems will be hard to find - it's carrying them that may be a problem." Nai'a explains. "The smallest ones you'll find are about watermelon-sized. The gems we need are oval-like in shape, and a bright yellow. Bring me just one. It will be enough to keep us hidden from any unwanted attention." This is the first time she's said 'we' or 'us' in reference to the team, you realize. Wonder why.

You’re called to Nai’a’s side that night as usual. You can’t help the sense of dread that settles in the pit of your stomach as you recognize the pastel clouds, but quietly trot forward to where the others have lined up to meet her. None of you seem overly excited to be there. That is, save for Nai’a.

In a way almost unlike herself, Nai’a is smiling. “I thought you may need a break after carrying those crystals. I hope all of you got some rest, because with said crystals we’ll be able to go back on track starting today.” Nobody answers. You had overheard that others had been planning to tell Nai’a everything, but actually doing it seems to be difficult, especially when she’s like… this. You can’t help but wonder if it’s real.

Nai’a’s face falls as her team stays silent. “What’s wrong?” She asks, eyebrows furrowing. “Has something happened?” After a moment, someone steps forward. “Lambent told us everything, Nai’a.” Is all they say, but it’s enough to stun the pastel Elder. The clouds in the distance begin to darken and split, you could swear the clouds beneath your own feet are becoming less solid. The same lambicorn from before continues to explain everything to a silent but attentive Nai’a as the world devolves into a storm. Somewhere along the way, it began to rain. You can actually feel the cold droplets hitting your fur. As the Lambicorn goes on to explain the vision they received of Nai’a’s dream, a bolt of purple lightning splits the sky, quickly followed by a clap of thunder. Nai’a pulls away from the Lambicorn as if they struck her, fear plain on her face. You were expecting anger, maybe, but fear? Why did this have such an affect on her?

Nai’a is petrified. The same Lambicorn calls out to her, but their voice is lost to the thunder. Or, perhaps, simply lost to Nai’a, who doesn’t seem entirely there at the moment. It’s Lambent you steps forward, placing their paw on her shoulder. Nai’a jumps, glances at Lambent, and swats them away with a glare. Another clap of thunder shakes the clouds, causing her to jump. She looks up and her eyes widen, as if this is the first time she noticed the state the dreamscape was in. She flicks her tail and a wall of fluffy clouds materializes behind her and the clouds at your feet solidify. The storm still rages on outside, but it’s muted and distant inside the ball of clouds. Nai’a sighs and lays on her belly in front of you, tail wrapped tightly to her side.

“There was never going to be a war.” She says after a moment. She sounds exhausted. “What unfortunate bit you saw of the feud between Grimm and I, that would have been it.” Nai’a shoots a glare at Lambent. “Neither of us want to go digging up bones, especially not in the middle of a festival. From what I’ve heard, Grimm and I both took precautions to keep the distance between us, hence the crystals. You should not have been involved in this, and for that I apologize.” Nai’a does sound sincere, but the way she keeps glancing at Lambent makes you wonder who she’s apologizing for. She sits up suddenly. “I think it’s best if you all spend another day away from… all of this. Go spend the day at the festival - no me, no Grimm, no Lambent. No teams.” She says decisively. “If the scavenger hunt is still ongoing by the end of the day, I will call you here again, and you may decide if you want to stay or quit.” Nai’a’s expression is unreadable. She bows her head to you ever-so-slightly, and you’re awake just like that. At least you have some… relative peace to look forward to today.

Nai’a is sitting where you and the rest of the team usually stand, looking somber and… small, in a way. Something in the way she usually holds herself is missing, and she has her tail wrapped tightly around her legs, only adding to her smaller look. The clouds around you are the same as they’re always been. It’s hard to imagine how quickly they delved into the storm last night, or to imagine how they could ever be like what Lambent showed you. You silently walk up to Nai’a, stopping just a few yards in front of her.

“Did you have fun at the festival?” She asks gently. “I hope so.” Suddenly, Nai’a lays on her belly, resting her head on her paws so you are eye to eye - well, as much as you can be. “You don’t have to tell me what you’ve decided about the team yet. But, I thought you may have… questions. I don’t know what you or anyone else has been thinking these last few days, or what Lambent has told you, so…” Nai’a trails off with a quiet huff. Her breath blows your fur back. “If you have any questions, I’ll answer them.” She begins to drum against the cloudy floor with her perfectly-filed claws, but tucks the offending paw under the other when she notices. It happens so quickly you barely even realize. “I promise. It’s… the least I could do, and it may be the only chance I have to set everything straight.”

For the most part, the dreamscape is back to normal. The same pale, fluffy clouds surround you, and Nai'a is waiting for you on her usual perch. She beckons you forward with a slight wave of her paw. She glances over what remains of the team, as if looking for someone, before speaking.

"I'm hoping things can return to normal today." Even today, her voice is still missing its usual lilt. "I'm sending you to a place called the Starbreach. When you wake, there will be a map to guide you there. You must destroy it after today. Like the valley where the Aurorae's Heart lilies grow, this place is unique in the world, and what I am sending you to gather is rare, and would be abused by those who only see fragments of ancient magic as a method for their own gain." A few lambicorns beside you shift uncomfortably. You can see Nai'a roll her eyes.

"It's not like that. I've known of this place for centuries; if I were one of those such lambicorns, I would've bled the place dry long ago." She grumbles. You could swear you notice her hug her paws closer to her chest, but the movement is so small it's hard to tell from this distance. She huffs before continuing. "It's a wide tide pool in the stone surrounding a cove. There will be many tide pools there, but if you follow the map, you'll find the right one." Nai'a explains. "In the daylight, it won't appear any deeper than a normal tide pool. Don't go in. Wait until the moon is at its peak - or wait to travel 'til you arrive at that time. Then, the tide pool will appear much, much deeper. You will see the stars reflected in the water, and some will appear much bigger than others. Grab those, but never fully submerge yourself in the water. If you can't reach one before doing so, it's best you don't try."

Is there something in the water? You raise an eyebrow at Nai'a, though from the corner of your eye you can tell some of your teammates are much more fearful. "Don't look at me like that, there's nothing in the water that will hurt you." Nai'a says quickly. "The 'stars' you will be grabbing are actually pearls. The creatures that produce them are known as moon oysters, and were scavenged to the brink of extinction for their pearls centuries ago. This tide pool is the only place they remain, and was enchanted ages ago to protect them. There's only a small window of time when the tide pool is accessible and the oysters are open. You can reach in a grab a pearl without harming yourself or the oyster, but go in and you risk being sealed on the other side." After that strange magical history lesson, Nai'a pauses. "Maybe you should bring some rope to make sure you don't fall in."

After looking over the pearls you brought and setting them aside, Nai'a turns back to you. "Do you remember the forest the portal was in?" You nod, and she continues. "Today's task will take you back there, but not for the portal. The northeastern corner of the forest acts as a refuge for a great variety of magical birds. They aren't quite as endangered as some of the things I've sent you for, so no need for secrecy or destroying maps, but this is one of the most accessible places to find these creatures." She explains. You can't help but be a little relieved; going after all those rare magical ingredients was beginning to make you wonder all over again what it was exactly that Nai'a was doing.

"You need to find a bright purple feather about the length of your paw. They belong to a bird called the Violet Cuttlebeak." You notice some other lambicorns shift uncomfortably. Hadn't you heard about the Cuttlebeaks from someone on Team Nightmare? Weren't they dangerous? Noticing her team's hesitance, Nai'a quickly continues. "They are a cousin of the bog-dwelling Cuttlebeak, but smaller and much more docile. They shouldn't give you any problems, but I wouldn't suggest trying to pluck a feather from them." She adds dryly. "None of the birds in the area should give you any trouble, though you should stay out of the trees. Most types of birds there are friendly towards or used to lambicorns, but some will still judge you as a threat if you're too close to their nest. I don't need many Violet Cuttlebeak feathers - three would be more than enough."

Nai'a beckons you closer with a wave of her paw. "Today, you're going somewhere nearly as old as I am." That alone is enough to make you curious. How old is Nai'a, exactly? She's an elder, but there's quite a wide range of age on elders - comparatively speaking. Nai'a presses on before you can ask.

"This place is near the middle of Whitewind Mountain. There's a trail that will take you most of the way there, but past a certain point you will have to follow magical markers. In order to see them, you will have to drink this." Nai'a snaps her claws, and suddenly there's a small vial in front of you - all of you. The liquid inside is a translucent rosy color, and seems bit more viscous than water. "The markers will lead you to a spring. You'll only be able to see said spring if you've drank the liquid in the vial, as its protected by a spell similar to the one that protects the Moon Oysters." She explains. "I need you to fill that vial with water from the spring and bring it back. If there are fish in the spring, leave them be. They are... old friends." Before you can ask what that means, you're awake.

Seriously, elders are weird.

Nai'a is lounging in her usual spot as you approach.

"Are you bored yet?" Her words drip with sarcasm. "Tired if the history lessons? I certainly hope so- otherwise you might not have too much fun with what I have in mind for today." Curious, you step closer. Nai'a smirks. "I've heard some odd reports lately. I need you to look around for dream dust - it looks like this." She snaps, and there's a small pile of glittery powder in front of you. It reminds you of the stardust she sent you to collect a while back, except it's similar in color to the clouds around you. In fact, it's a little hard to see.

Nai'a snaps again, and it's gone. "Unfortunately, these reports don't originate in one place. Basically, I'm asking you to just... go. Go out for a day, look around, try to find the stuff, and tell me if there's anything weird nearby it." You ask what she means by 'anything weird'. Nai'a gives you a strange look, like you just asked the most obvious question ever. "I told you I was getting strange reports, didn't I? So, anything strange that you think is worth reporting." She 'answers', turning away from you dismissively. "They've been occurring mostly in places with heavy concentrations of magic, so try somewhere I sent you before if you can't find anything. Good luck."

Nai'a is pacing when you arrive - which, considering you never her saw her pacing even during the whole... thing with Grimm, immediately is a cause for concern. She glances up at you and groans.

"Don't look at me like that." Her voice is just below a snarl, but she sounds more exasperated than truly angry. You just barely hear her grumble something about "why she hid her dreams in the first place" under her breath before she stops and turns to face you.

"Everything is fine." She says firmly. "I've just run into a small hitch with my plans for the festival is all. Hopefully, it won't affect our scavenger hunt." Nai'a huffs and sits down, eyes closed. She draws in a slow breath and lets it out, the tension slowly leaving her as she does so. When she opens her eyes again, she even manages a sheepish smile. Whoa. Wonder who chewed her out.

"Today, I need you to find a plant called the Daydream Primadonna." You raise an eyebrow at Nai'a. For a moment, she doesn't seem to get it, then a scowl settles over her face. "Oh, haha. You're so funny." She glares down at you - and you almost feel bad - but really, what did she expect? You're half positive a certain four-eyed someone named the plant just to mock her anyways.

Nai'a huffs. "You'll find it growing in the plains east of the forest. Be careful, though; like the eastern side of the forest, the area is rife with magical creatures. Some are... less than friendly, so don't go too far. You should be fine."

The dreamland seems... weak, somehow. When you arrive, your feet sink into the clouds, causing you to yelp in surprise. Nai'a, who is pacing a few yards away, doesn't seem to notice. You shakily pull yourself out, turning to help a teammate who sank as well, before taking a good look at the dreamscape. It doesn't seem stormy, just... diluted. The clouds seem more transparent, somehow, but there's nothing on the other side. The air feels different too, but you aren't quite sure how.

"Oh! You're here." Nai'a's sudden voice causes you to jump. You turn to her, and realize she seems a bit frazzled. "So, I have to admit something to you." Before you or anyone else can say anything, she quickly continues speaking. "I was planning to do a group-dream as the last "hurrah" of the festival. For... well, everyone. This scavenger hunt wasn't just a game - it was a way for me to get what I needed." She flashes a brief smile at the team. You can only look at her in awe.

"Well, I'm having some problems. Bringing everyone here," Nai'a sweeps a paw generally about the dreamscape, "has- well, it- I-" She grows visibly uncomfortable, her fur fluffing up as she struggles with her words. "Doing it so often, and forcing it to be relatively peaceful has been... draining. I'm- I'm having trouble supporting this, and I-" Nai'a suddenly cuts herself short, slamming her eyes shut and drawing in a long breath. You could almost swear you hear her breath hitch. When Nai'a opens her eyes again, she seems considerably more composed.

"I can't hide how difficult it is anymore." She sighs. "And, after everything, I thought telling you outright would be better than... hiding anything else." Nai'a says the last few words with some difficulty, fidgeting with her paws. "In short, everything should be fine, if I get the materials I need. However, we can't keep meeting here. Today, you'll meet me at the mountain spring I sent you to a few days ago - you'll find a vial of the potion needed to find the way there with you when you wake today."

"Today, you need to find the feathers of a Wetlands Wolpertinger. Luckily, the lambicorn who found them was wildly incompetent - they live on and around mountains. It's their molting season, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding feathers. Good luck."

With no dream that night and a familiar vial by your bed that day, you return to the mountain spring you met Nai'a at yesterday. You're the first there, and you find her resting by the spring, swirling a claw slowly through the water. As you get closer, you realize you've caught her playing a sort of game with the fish - something you never expected to see the troubled Elder do. She seems perfectly at peace, and doesn't seem to have noticed you. You awkwardly clear your throat, causing Nai'a to jump slightly and pull her paw out of the water.

Nai'a quickly works the surprise off her face. "Thank you for meeting me." She says nonchalantly. "We'll wait for the others to arrive." With that, she sits up and focuses her gaze on the entrance to the spring, though you notice her glancing at the fish occasionally, who seem to be giving her the aquatic equivalent of puppy eyes.

Weird.

In a few minutes, the rest of the team is there, and Nai'a begins to speak. "Our last day! How exciting." She's very different from the flashy, sarcastic Elder who met you the first day; she's still and somber, these qualities heavier now that you've met in flesh-and-blood."Just a little bit higher, a berry called a Prancing Huckleberry grows in droves. They're in season now, but are a pain to gather, as their name suggests." Nai'a huffs a laugh, smiling softly. "They're filled with magic, which makes them a bit... testy. They're just as sweet as any other huckleberry, though, and this mountain is one of the few places they grow. As long as you don't drop them, they shoildn't escape from you." Nai'a moves her massive paw, revealing quite a few small wicker baskets. Well. Nice of her to provide the baskets this time. "Good luck."

You and the others move forward and grab a basket. Some are already on their way out when Nai'a speaks again, which makes it all the more surprising. "I feel this may be the last time I see most of you." You look up at the Elder. Her face in unreadable. "I feel like I still owe you answers, even if not about myself and other Elders. When you come back today, if you have any questions you feel I can answer, I invite you to ask me."

I'm collecting stardust!
Username: bakuraas.
Art/Writing: [ feat. iso and Iso's babysitter, azu ] [ 492 words ]

"Young man, Where do you think you're going!?"

The dark lambicorn was quick to keep up with Iso as he ran around the fields, going up and down the hills in search of stardust. When he woke up, he immediately went on the search, not even alerting his parents or his babysitter. While his parents were far too slow to keep up with the spry young one, his babysitter Azu was far more agile. To be honest, Iso didn't know why he didn't just turn around and tell him everything- maybe he was just in a rush? Either way, all he would say as he went across the hills was just a screamed out, vague excuse.

"Busy! I'll tell you later!" Was all that came out, echoing over to the older lambicorn. Of course, this wasn't good enough, and Iso soon heard Azu's voice again, and the sound of leathery wings taking off. "Oh no, you're not gonna get me off your back that easy!" Oh gosh, now he knew he was in trouble, running away was one thing, but Azu was sure to catch up with him if it was a race of wings against legs. Maybe he should try to win a prize that gave him wings, then he'd be on the same playing field the next time something like this happened.

He tried even harder to find a bit of stardust, and eventually saw a sparkle on a larger hill in the distance. He gasped happily at the sight, knowing that he'd have at least something to give to Nai'a once he went back to the dreamworld. He was about to go off and grab the sparkling goods, but before he could even get off the peak of the hill he was standing on, he felt a wing wrap around him, essentially stopping him. Iso sighed openly. Oh no.

Azu took a moment to catch his breath before speaking with a tone that made it clear that Iso wasn't going anywhere until he got an explanation. "Alright, Iso. What's this big idea? What was so important that you couldn't tell me or your dads where you were going?" Iso paused for a moment, thinking about how to go about explaining this, eventually it just sort of came out, and ended up sounding more simplified than he meant for it to. "Uhm...I'm gathering stardust for the Queen of Dreams..." A pause. Iso worried that Azu would get mad at that answer, but instead, he felt the wing unwrap from him, and heard his babysitter's tone go from stern to calm. "That's it? You know, if you told me I could have come along with you. Besides, These hills are way too small, not high enough to catch floating stardust in the grass. Let's go somewhere with bigger hills."

"Wait, so...you're going to help me?"
"Yeah, duh. Now come on, you can even use one of my bags to carry it."
"and I, as ever, am my own worst enemy."
