Songrems are an ancient species with a shortened nickname of 'Grems'. These large fluffy creatures use their solid exoskeleton-like jaws to crush and and eat their meals, and are adapt to most living environments. All Songrems have holes in their horns that produce a melody, or a certain song when wind is blown through them. Each song is completely unique though some may be similar and many people keep them as pets to listen to their melodies, but also because of their generally cuddly nature.

Origins & Evolution

Songrems are an ancient species, their ancestors directly linked to dinosaurs. The first songrem-esque ancestor to evolve was around 320 mya during the Pennsylvanian subperiod. By scientists, their ancestors were dubbed Sonsydrops. They were massive creatures breaching 10 ft at adulthood, and most similar in appearance to the Spinosaurus. However, rather than a sail trailing down their back they had large spines from their heads to their reptilian tails. However, most strangely of all- They were covered in a soft short fur. While the cousin mammalian species evolving at the same time were the ancestors to other mammals, Sonsydrops had some difficulties throughout its time on the earth.

They were smaller than other species in weight, and were often overpowered in strength. The retreating ocean levels left swampy land that brought many illnesses as their fur proved to be a problematic feature that led to disease. As other species shrunk, so did the Sonsydrops. They had to in order to navigate the increasingly difficult terrain and hunt their prey. In the past, they were strictly carnivores, and small meals did little to tide them over, so the larger of their kind died out.

Due to such difficulties, they had a very slow evolutionary chain. While other species evolved quickly, into all of the familiar mammals we know today, Sonsydrops did not. By the time of the ice age, 20,000 years ago (roughly), their kind had evolved to the small size that they have today. They were similar in features to the current songrems, other than the remainder of the lizard-like tail and their back spines. As the earth cooled, their kind was forced to evolve further, developing their thick fur..and more notably- the defining musical horns they have today. They also developed to become omnivores, as food became more scarce their bodies were forced to adapt...or go extinct.

Their former spines vanished as they evolved, though, even today if you were to look at their anatomy you may notice they have extra spikes still attached to their spines! They're very small, however, and can vary depending on the bloodline. Depending on the size of the spikes on their spines, its possible to trace certain Songrem bloodlines to the most 'pure' grems, the ones closest to their roots. During the ice age, it became more efficient for them to have a single, powerful horn and jaws that could help them through the icy tundra. The thick wind made it inefficient for them to communicate with their squeaks and squawking noises- as it just carried away their voices. Due to their newer small size, finding other songrems was hard! The distinctive hole in their horns evolved as a mutation...but one that flourished. It allowed them a new form of communication. By recognizing the sound whistling through each other's horns, they could find individuals they were looking for.

Songrems are very social creatures, so when humans evolved it took them no time at all to be friendly to their new neighbors! They were so gentle and sweet that humans naturally accepted them as pets and companions as their societies grew and became powerful empires.

Since the days of the ice age, Songrems have changed very little. Their evolution since that time has primarily been in coloration bred by humans for showing and beauty standards, and they have gotten notably more intelligent since those days.

World Information

Songrems live in a world very similar to our own earth. However- there are some important differences! Think of it more like an alternate universe of earth. The formation and evolution was very similar to earths geology, but it has its own unique modern geography and populations! This is primarily for easier understanding and translation.

You are not required to use the world provided for Songrems, but it is available in the event you so choose! You may use them in any alternate universe you like to interact with your characters of other species, and they may be drawn as a human or as an anthro.

The world of Songrems is known as Isethef, this is a world similar to our own, however, it is broken up into seven continents of very different cultures and traditions. Isethef is a world where modern technology does indeed exist, however technology and magic co-exist naturally and there are both supernatural things and natural scientific discoveries. Humans are still the primary intelligent creatures of the world, but they may exist with other intelligent beings (other characters) of most any species you could imagine. Since this world is not strictly traditional evolution, and magical mutations and species may occur, Songrems can come into contact with all sorts of things! Songrems just happen to be one of the species that have a long evolutionary line and began around the same time as the dinosaurs, making them one of the most ancient long-living species on their planet.

Isethef's seven continents are Ipus, Caisios, Eoqul, Siuzend, Vledeon, Sheopax, and Xaheth.

Ipus
Ipus is a smaller continent that is revered as the epicenter of magical arts. The most accepting of the various forms of magic, the country is centrally ruled by the magic circle- five academies of magic who teach the young how to control the strange powers. Entry into these academies is highly sought after and competitive, as they only allow the best. The academies are ruled by an archmage each, and a ring of high mages. The archmages work in cohesion to rule the country and their word in Ipus is final. The country is very equal and accepting of all regardless of race/gender/ect. The main taboo in that location is using black magic or using magic to harm people without provocation. Mages are held in high regard, and peasants are generally viewed as the lower class. Those unsuccessful in magic arts most often find themselves as craftsman or farmers. The geography is largely deciduous forest, crisscrossed by powerful visible valley leylines. The valleys are populated by caves along their walls and lakes lie at the bottom where water pools, the area is generally very hilly; and architecture is built upward, rather than outward, forming high spires of castles peeking above the small mountains. Lorewise, they believe the country to be the first made by the creator, and the magic there to be a result of Her power there as it was first expended. The Goddess neither confirms nor denies this. They believe in the creator goddess religiously, and believe in minor gods that adhere to each of their circle elements, Fire, wind, water, arcane, and earth. Towards other countries, they are happy to share things and offer their assistance- but do not share their studies into magic. It is their one advantage and they wouldn't allow it into the hands of those who may abuse it.

Caisios
Caisios is one of the larger continents, and a very highly populated one. Through feudal and medival times they were a largely ocean and maritime based society, a trading society that reached out to other nearby peoples for supplies. In the modern era it became the most advanced country due to the wide variety. Also promoting high growth in crime later one. In ancient times, it was ruled by a simple monarchy, before developing into a democratic society through the modern era. Historically, they reject the existance of gods and prefer the pursuit of sciences instead. It is a divided continent, covered in lakes and crisscrossing rivers, and it had many swampy locations until the nuclear war that destroyed the country and turned a majority into a barren wasteland.

The Eoqul Islands
The Eoqul Islands is home to the most reclusive and exotic of cultures in the world. Very isolated they devloped very unique cultural personalities. A chain of islands, each island is very radically different from each other due to their creation. One resembles a large savannah, another a huge jungle, some are fully sand beaches. The peoples are very different on each island, and as whole very unwelcoming to outsiders since their neighbors are they very dangerous and controlling Siuzend. Many of the villages are patriarchal societies, where women are looked down on, other than a few sparse villages in the jungles where women reign. They are extremely superstitious and have their own personal gods whom they worship, and can react violently when one of their traditions are insulted or disrespected. Despite their differences, there is not much conflict between the various villages. They have a strong mutual respect for one another.

Siuzend
Siuzend is a smaller continent bordering the Eoqul Islands. Military in force, and historically ruled by powerful tyrants and military dictators. They heavily reject the idea of any gods other than a war god that demands sacrifice. They are hostile towards other countries, and though in modern times they forge a grudging acceptance of them, they are extremely sensitive of their culture and reject anyone who does not bend to their ways. Geographically, the island is primarily desert towards the center, though the areas nearest the sea are lush rainforests, forming a heavy contrast between the two; supposedly caused by a strange wind current pulling raingiving clouds from the desert area. Most villages are along the borders of the jungles, as opposed to within them, as they respect the meager resources they have. The thick jungles also provide a strong protective wall to any outside forces approaching from the sea.

Vledeon
Vledeon is a continent fully covered in jungle, caused by the same climate at nearby Siuzend. The land historically was mainly unclaimed, populated by giant dangerous creatures and unexplored wilds. There are a few large empires within the jungle, friendly native peoples who are happy to trade and share their culture. They are strong hunters and warriors-the only way they have held off the forces of nearby military-Siuzend. Religiously, they have their own set of gods, but are accepting of new ideas and thus many of the empires have different religious views due to influence of other peoples. Geographically, the continent has many rivers and cliffs, and waterfalls are common. The people are a skill-based one, equal in acceptance of skin color, gender, ect; they judge based on a person's hunting skill and survival instincts. The leaders are therefore- the most skilled hunters, until their deaths in which case a new chief is appointed by the people.

Sheopax
As the largest continent, Sheopax is made up mostly of grassing hills and sparse forests. A peaceful place made up mostly of farming communities who worship the Primary dieties. Historically monarchial, until modern era where they develop a loose democracy. They generally keep to themselves and because of their non-military nature they are often the victims of attacks along their borders, there are historically a few settlements from nearby Siuzend where they had fought their way into their land.

Xaheth
A smaller continent hidden behind the thick mists of the ocean, victim to terrible wind storms, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that its entirely unlivable. All efforts to colonize the land has resulted in the colonies being destroyed by natural disasters or their peoples being attacked by the local wildlife, also extremely dangerous and having many adaptations in order to survive such a harsh enviornment.

In form, though they are mammals, Songrems are very unique. They have a rather generous size range, and may be anywhere from as small as a common house cat to standing up to 3 ft tall at maximum. They tend to average around 2 ft at adulthood, with young around 6 inches to 1ft tall. They have similar bone structures to that of a cat or dog (on the surface), but their bones are much harder and stockier. They resist breaking, so songrems can take a lot of impact before risking any harm! As they evolved, this was important as they'd often stumble or fall off rock walls. Thanks to their thick fur, and sturdy frame...they'd bounce or pop back up without much trouble at all (Though they might be sore for a while after!)

Their horns are a part of their skull structure, and very sturdy. A broken horn is near impossible, though has occurred in some rare circumstances. This is a very painful and unpleasant experience for the grem. They will grow back if the damage is small, but it is a very long process and it will remain very sensitive until its back to full length.

When young, their horns are very small (in order to prevent damage to their parent!). But they will grow during their juvenile years to whatever the adult length would be. They don't grow for their entire lives, they stop growing around adulthood.Similar to other horned mammals (such as a rhino,or giraffe!) They have keratin covering the bony structure beneath.

They have short, stocky legs with small paws. These allowed them to hop above the snow, by avoiding placing a lot of weight on its surface. Their small paws don't allow them much traction when it comes to climbing, so they tend to do better on the ground level.

Their strong jaws allow them many uses. They are omnivorous, and will eat anything they can get a hold of. Similar to a goat-really. Their powerful bites help them chew through shells to get to fruits and vegetables, and other such things.
They are also perfectly capable of using these bites to defend themselves.

Since they are rather small, they are often targeted by larger animals as prey. Their methods of self defense typically involves a nasty bite or a headbutt to whatever is threatening them. Or intimidating them with shrill squeaks and squawks. As very social creatures, they may also gang up on a threat in order to help others of their kind. It's a lot scarier to deal with a dozen songrem screaming at you than one, right?

A songrems horn is formed with a hole in the center, that allow wind to whistle through and produce a melody. Because the melody is an important social cue for Songrems as a species, their ears are finely tuned to tilt and catch this song on the breeze as it sounds in the distance. Their large ears are able to funnel this noise and their sensitive hearing allows them to understand and translate individuals based on their specific songs from far away.

Because they are rather sturdy creatures they also have quite long lifespans, easily living to their seventies with the right care. Their age groups are similar to humans, with birth-12 or so being young children, 12-20 being their juvenile years, and older adulthood.

A Songrem's Song

Postby Sixbane » Thu May 18, 2017 9:13 pm

Image
To a Songrem, their song (the melody played when wind whistles through their horn) means a lot!

Within their culture/species, it is a symbol of each individual, as unique as a fingerprint and always something that defines an individual to others of their kind. Finding family members this way by similar songs or melodies they recognize is important!

Their songs have sparked plenty of superstition within their own culture as a species, and among humans who hear their musical notes on the breeze. Depending on who you ask, it may be a symbol of life and happiness, and to others an omen of tragedy if the melody is a somber one.

The song is purely based on their physical features, and has little actual impact on the personality nor is it effected by such of the Songrem itself, but its often said that somewhere in their hearts the song says something about the individual who expresses it.

As pets, among humankind, the more beautiful the melody, the more the grem is coveted.

Rarities & mutations/traits

Postby Sixbane » Mon Jun 05, 2017 6:29 am

Common Edits
Hair edits
As mammals, Songrems can have any length fur on their head. This is a trait promoted by human breeding and styling tends to be up to their lifestyle and individual preference. It offers some protection from the sun and for a Songrem's sensitive ears.

Minor horn shape edits
Most Songrems have a basic horn shape native to their species, but some individuals may have slightly longer, shorter, or deformed horns either by mutation or passed genetically. These don't tend to have a great impact on them or their lives, but it does give them a unique melody with the breeze passing through the holes in their horns.

Extra fluff
As mammals some individuals may have extra fur on the arms, legs, back, and so forth. This tends to be decided either through selective breeding, or by the environment in which they live in which cases the extra fur may come in handy.

Dark scleras
Songrems may have dark colored scleras, and this is simply a pigmentation mutation. It doesn't impact much of a Songrem's life but some individuals may have diminished vision as a result.

Pupil edits
Songrems may have different shaped pupils, this is typically a product of whichever environment their family line evolved in. Some continents required more light, different eye adjustments, and variations in order to allow the Songrems to see and thrive. As the populations become more spread, various shaped pupils have become commonplace, though the normal 'round' is still the most common.

Tongue edits
Similar to pupil shape, survival necessities have allowed some Songrems different tongue shapes in order to help them eat whatever food their diet most consists of.

Heterochromia
Heterochromia in Songrems is quite common, as a pigment deficiency in one eye. Like darker scleras, this is just a product of their evolution and unusual makeups.

Different teeth shapes/jaw shapes
These are common in songrems and depend widely on the individual and their background. Depending on the environment of their ancestry and the food they primarily ate, their teeth may be sharper, rounder, longer, or shorter.

claw edits
Claws are common in songrems, though they are typically very small and just used for extra grabbing ability. They are most common in forested areas to allow them an easier time climbing trees and plants.

Tail TUFT edits
The tuft on the end of a songrems tail is also a common difference, similar to hairstyle its up to the individuals habits and styling.

Uncommon Edits
Tail edits, Two horns (must have holes), Shorter fur/no fur, Full Tail edits, Ear edits

Rare Edits
Up to 5 horns (must have holes), Missing horn (gene does not pass), Up to two missing limbs, Extra eyes, ears and other various limbs including tails, Shorter or longer major body modifications (legs, torso, neck ect), glowing, halos (up to 3). broken horns

Legendary Edits
All and any magical powers, multiple heads, elemental powers, scales or similar surfaces, gills, serious mutations of any sort, wings, flight, Horns with no holes.
