Hi there, this is my form for the Kalon Development Event! Below I have all the workshops posted and edited before they are due.

I only have one Kalon but if I win another during this event, I may include them. If I do, I will edit this page only and not any other workshops in order to keep them done on time so the edits are not past the due date. However,I will start including them in new workshops with due dates that haven't ended. ^^

Workshop One - Writing Prompt
(write out their personality in any amount of words)

He's a botanist at a local research college and he also teaches classes there. He loves kids and teaching but is shy around his peers. He's a little self conscious about his lack of color, so he's much more confident in the winter when he can bundle up in colorful scarves and hats. He owns several birds (his favorite being a macaw) and fills his house with well kept potted plants and a few paintings he's gathered from student's at his college. He is obsessed with science, entering in contests whenever he can and owning a few gadgets like a telescope. He can be a tad irritable when another adult Kalon seems ignorant or illogical, but most of the time he enjoys teaching others new things and has a very "father-like" personality, especially around kids.

Workshop One - Day One Exercise

What is your Kalon’s first, middle, and last name (if they have one)?
Spruce doesn't have a middle name but he always liked the name Zander, so if he had a choice, that would be the name he would go with. His first and last name is Spruce Fernling.

Does your Kalon have a human appearance as well? If so, what do they look like?
I'm more of a feral artist haha, so I never really have the ability to draw a human appearance. I'd imagine he'd have really tan skin, probably of middle eastern descent and he would wear glasses and colorful clothes. However, I probably won't draw a ref and instead personify him with human characteristics (like jobs) and shower him in feral art.

Does you Kalon have any family members? If so, blood related or adopted?
If I get another Kalon or get more into the community, I may give him adopted siblings, however I have not bred Spruce and do not have plans to. He LOVES kids and playing the role of a teacher, but I think he enjoys teaching more than he does parenting. If I do breed him, I'll probably make it a lifetime relationship where he gets to teach his son about plants and the stars.

Who is your Kalon the closest too? Why?
Mogwai's Alice! Because we got our Kalons together and always partner up with everything in kalons. Spruce was at first jealous of Alice's bright colors, but over time he got accustomed to her and leaned that she was an amazing friend. They grew up together as kids and when Spruce got a job up north, they moved up north together to have a friend in the new scary situation when Alice also had to move in with her family.

What sort of occupation does your Kalon have? Do they enjoy it?
He is a botanist and loves it! He loves plants and covers his entire house with various potted plants. He loves the sciences and couldn't decide what science he wanted. Eventually he took up biology and got into botany, but he partakes in several physics competitions on occasion and has a deck outside his bedroom that has a telescope.

List some of your Kalons likes and dislikes and give an explanation as to why.
Birds- They are colorful and though not very intelligent, they make great pets and some of them can specialize in certain talents. Some of them can count and others can talk (not to mention flying and fishing). However, Spruce finds their appearance and behavior adorable, no matter their special talents. He has a favorite bird, a macaw parrot named Crayon that is allowed around the house and the others are in cages surrounded by plants.
Ferns and other green plants- Most of the plants Spruce owns are not flowering or producing plants but are green foliage. One of his favorites are ferns. They are plain and simple like him
Colors and colorful accessories- Spruce is slightly self conscious of his all brown appearance compared to his friends and others who are filled with bright colors. In a way of coping, he fills his house with colorful birds and dresses himself in scarves and other clothing with bright colors.
Kids- Spruce has always thought of having a kid but just has never found "the one." He works at a college and really enjoys anytime he can teach them, even if they aren't kids, but young adults.

What is your Kalons biggest weakness and strength?
His biggest weakness is his doubt in his own appearance and how it stops him from approaching others. He also is bad at making jokes or speaking as easily as others. However, he is a jack of all trades and a family guy.

Workshop Two - Day Two Exercise

Write about a time when your Kalon(s) lost something important or someone close to them:
(detail the event and the emotions they felt)

"I consider myself lucky... not to have underwent a family death. I have never experienced a close Kalon die in my lifetime so far. However, pets are family to me and they are not as lucky. They're lives are much shorter and it's hard to pick out new birds knowing they will not last. As a kid, I owned a finch. It was my closest friend through school and any conflict I would go through, my finch would comfort me. I felt stronger and less afraid of being social. At home I could talk to him and feel better. But years passed and he got much older; he died at the age of four. I remember not leaving my room for a full day. I couldn't imagine why he had to die after such a short time... I didn't want another bird after that. I felt lonely, but my fear of losing another friend scared me more than being alone. Finally my mom picked out a macaw parrot for me, the one that sits with me on my shoulder now. They're average lifespan is very, very long, but owning him made me realize that even if there is a chance of losing someone, the chance is worth taking. I own several birds now (even a finch) and I hold them closer than ever."

Workshop One - Day Three Exercise

Do they keep promises, or break them? Why?
Spruce tries to keep promises the best he can, but occasionally he's forgetful and can forget a favor when he's stressed over something else. He tries but is not perfect.

Are they a leader, follower, or loner? Why?
Some Kalons are born natural leaders, but everyone has times where they prefer to follow. Most of the time Spruce is a follower. Because of his insecurities, he often changes himself or will agree with the masses to fit in. However, he is a teacher- a leader of a class. He will stand by his scientific opinion if he has the proof to back it up.

If they could change one thing in their past, what would it be and why?
He'd probably tell himself to get out there and make more friends, to not be afraid of others and be himself, but deep down he'd know that's just advice for his current self and he's always been shy.

Do they care what others think of them? Why or why not?
Definitely, almost to an unhealthy extent. He even wears scarves and other clothing to add color to his very "plain" body. He dislikes how he looks and prefers the colorful fur other Kalons have. Any comments others make leaves him feeling disheartened for days. If he sees others whispering, he assumes it's about him and he will put on his jacket or hide in his scarf.

Do they tend to argue with others or do they avoid conflict?
Spruce only argues if it's about science. He used to be on the debate club in high school but hated it. However, if it's a top he is well informed on and did personal research for, he may argue with others due to being annoyed at their ignorance on the topic. He is published on a few findings in his scientific field which is similar to arguing because some of them lightly disprove others.

Are they more spontaneous, or are they the type that always needs a plan?
Plan. Always a plan. He's only really spontaneous with peer pressure.

Do they have any quirks, mannerisms, habits, or other defining characteristics?
-Wearing scarves and colorful clothing all the time
-Being really into horoscopes without believing them
-Really liking the cold (but is sad about it because it means he can't grow tropical plants)
-Birds, owning lots and lots of birds

Workshop One - Day Four Exercise

Draw/write them interacting with their favorite thing: (item, person, place, etc.)

(Only had time for a sketch and small little story today)
Spruce got up to water his plants. They were spread around the house, next to various bird cages, or tables covered with science books from long ago and present day. Plants covered his entire house and made the place spell naturally pleasant despite the numerous pets. Spruce kept various birds, whether it be pigeons, finches, or doves. He loved them all and kept the feathered babies close to him. His favorite was a Macaw parrot, who was given to him as a gift. Spruce watered his plants and sprinkled some fertilizer in some of the newer ones that need extra care. His bird always followed him, seeming to inspect his job to make sure he did it right. The bird can't talk but Spruce feels like he motivates him to grow better and stronger plants. Spruce likes feeling his work is respected and acknowledged despite him being extremely shy.

Workshop Two - Day One Exercise

Where do they live and what is the geography like?
He lives close enough to the city for streets to constantly be crowded, but far enough away for him to have a quaint house with a small yard. You can hear cars inside the house but it's very faint. The terrain is very hilly and it snows heavily in the winter with warm summers, an average four seasons.

What is the society like there, is there a hierarchy?
In the city there is the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor... Almost all societies have some sort of social hierarchy and especially an economic one. The city can be rude because people feel anonymous but the suburb is nice and welcoming (but drama loving!)

What kind of technology does the world possess: modern, medieval, fantasy, etc.?
Modern, but possibly near future? (So I can have him invent things not existing in the current now)

Do many or only a few people live here?
Just him in his house! But it's a small enough suburban area for people to at least acknowledge their neighbors but the city is like the black hole of knowledge, a swarm of people.

Is the history the same as our world, or is it different? If different, how?
Relatively the same, I usually makes my Kalons and other species an au of the existing Earthen history

Is your Kalon(s) considered lower, middle, or upper class?
Upper middle class. He has a high paying job and is fairly frugal with his money when not buying birds (plus living alone helps sustain money)

What sort of language(s) is commonly spoken here?
I imagine him being in North America, speaking mostly English with hints of Spanish and other languages.

Brooklyn is Spruce's co-worker and girlfriend. They're both shy and share a field in astronomy, with Brooklyn focussing more on physics and Spruce on Biology. However, they always are up for a long discussion on any science, taking back and forth about different possibilities. Together their work ethic improves and they bounce ideas to together become stronger at their individual studies. It also allows for them to constantly learn and think outside their normal, confined research group. Both of them are extremely shy and can hardly even muster up flirts, mostly saying dumb space flirts like "You are my star and together we form constellations." The possibility of kids and marriage is really far away, right now they are just nerds who love plants, space, and science.

Workshop Three - Day One Exercise

Has your kalon ever met their grandparents? If so, what do they think of them?
Yes actually, he's closer to them than his parents, they basically raised him. His grandparents live on a farm that raises mostly wheat. Spruce loved tending to it, but hated waking up early as a kid. They would show him the ways of the "olden days" to teach Spruce that he should be respectful of traditions. Instead he picked up on the farming ways of his grandparents and improved on it, learning the ways of the future to make new traditions.
What is your kalon's relationship with their parents?
As a kid it was very rocky. He never understood why they worked so much or seemed to ignore him. They sent him to his grandparents all summer and a lot of weeks in the school year. It affected his school life and it wasn't until he was older that the relationship healed.
Do they have any siblings? Are they blood related or adopted?
None as of now.
Does your kalon have children? Do they/did they ever want to have kits?
No but he wants a kit or two!
Which family member is your kalon closest to? Why?
His grandmother. She taught him the ways of the farm and practically raised him.
Is there a family member your kalon wishes they could know better? Who is it?
Hmm... probably his cousins. They all do farm or science work themselves and he would love to be surrounded by those environments.
