shivering’sea and firefly’flitter stare in absolute confusion at the tiny human in front of them. it wears horribly brightly colored clothes, red and green and white in patterns and colors that truly hurt shivering’sea’s eyes. the human- perhaps a strange human child?- speaks in its language that neither cat can understand, and then, seeing their lack of understanding, pulls out a paper from somewhere in its clothes.
“HELP ME FIND MY HAT!” it reads in bold font at the top. firefly’flitter inspects the photo included under it, and seems entranced by the mission and the strange hat this small human has lost.
they try to assure the human that they’ll find it, and it seems to understand, but replies in its own language so they can’t tell what it said in response. the cats shrug and go to search for it. they check the marsh, the camp, the valley, the moors- they look everywhere, but no luck, and they start to give up hope when they finally make it to the last place, the forests. as shivering’sea begins to look, though, they very swiftly find it- the muddied red, white, and green torn remains of the hat. and with it, a coyote scent.
firefly’flitter and shivering’sea exchange a look, and the lighter tabby gathers the remains together. they both run back to camp, and while firefly’flitter supplies some left-over painted leaves they had used to decorate the camp previously, shivering’sea begins weaving them into the torn remains of the hat and connecting them with vines.
they work diligently, and at the end of the day, shivering’sea presents the hat to the bright, tiny human, who they have affectionately nicknamed hue throughout the day. hue takes the gift, just as brightly colored as the rest of its clothes after the cats had washed it, with a white flower at the top to replace the puff that had been there, and seems to simply… stare, for a moment. then it starts crying, and the cats worry for a moment before they’re both picked up and spun around. hue takes out its paper and write on the back, in a red crayon it must have kept in its pocket, “THANK YOU !!”

↬ prompt: the clan would likely call upon bearpaw, one of their apprentices who is particularly talented in making accessories with cloth/fabric he found lying around the twoleg area, in order to help make a new hat. he would make use of the scraps that they found at the scene to try and colour match it with the fabric he already has, and would also use leaves to decorate the hat. it would have patches in it, of course, has he wouldn't have enough of the same fabric, but he would do his best to make it look as close as possible to the original elf hat... if it had been made by diy following no tutorial.

↬ prompt: Frederick was excited when Thistlestar and Willowheart came back with the elf's hat, only to become quickly devastated when he realized that it had been torn apart. The three of them discussed how they could either repair the hat, find a new one, or make a new one from scratch. They put the remaining pieces together and realized there was no way it could be fixed, it was simply beyond repair. Then they tried searching for a new one; however, all hats they found were either too big, too small, or just didn't look right. And their final option had two major problems:
Problem 1: None of them knew how to knit or sew.
Problem 2: They had no fabric to make a hat out of.
At first, they found a few scraps of fabric and intended to quickly learn how to sew it into a hat. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough fabric to begin with, and their attempts to sew it up only resulted in them ruining it completely. So what did they do instead? Well, they managed to find pieces of plastic bags! Yes, grocery bags, gift bags, all those good things. And they found a tape dispenser, too. So they taped the pieces of plastic together into a weird cone shape and admired their handiwork. Beautiful! Gorgeous! They could see absolutely nothing wrong with it at all.
The elf, on the other hand, seemed a bit confused at first, unsure of what they were even trying to give him. Upon being told that it was a hat, he seemed to brighten up. Of course it was very scrappy, and quite hideous, but he recognized that they'd worked hard to make it, and knew that they greatly valued his happiness. So even though it was pretty ugly, he wore it with glee, thanking them for their generosity and hospitality. And he knew that he'd wear this new hat until it fell apart, even if his fellow elves offered him a brand new one. Luckily, he probably wouldn't have to wait long for it to tear...

hah - littlefog has the perfect solution to this.
elves are magical, no? and all it needs is a hat? a magic hat, per se?
easy. she scrapes a bunch of fresh moss into the shape of a top hat, just like her own magic hat - yes, she has her own magic hat, very impressive she knows - and stuffs some sticks in there for structural support. which hopefully won't poke and stab the elf, but, hey, the magic would be worth it if it did.
