fable: Wonder + Gifted

Wonder never stopped moving, even when her form groaned beneath the strain of exhaustion's weight. The fable's joints stiffened within the dusk's gripping chill; the once soft expanse of sky Wonder had served with pride now hung hollow, her ivory fur and cobalt mane blending with the welkin and its lunar observer. Her mind was frozen, fixed, vision narrowed in on her purpose within the woods: to find the kingdom's last protector, its sole guardian.
Stress dug its teeth into her nerves, her mind, her body, forcing the engine of her heart to overpower the mind and push it past its limits. She knew the price of this all too well, having overridden her system time and time again, taking advantage of the flight it locked her nerves into when her reserves ran dry. A familiar routine, yet one not without its consequences. Sleep would not come easily, even when her mind felt heavy with the exhaustion, body unable to move from the fatigue.
She would not break from stress so easily. Not when there was still so much she had to do.

Gifted was no stranger to stress. It came with his profession, requiring that he live within the strenuous strain of severity forever asked of him. Restructuring the compartments within his mind was easy enough, after enough exposure. Locking away the feeling that tried to rear its head in the middle of a job soon became muscle memory, a subconscious act, every choice he had to make under threat of death was one made coolly without the flaw of feeling. This piece of his mind would not return to him for some time.
