response:
ondine thought the black hole opening directly beneath her while in the home she had always known was weird enough, but now she stood on her own four legs. this is a moment she had dreamed of, always longed for, loathing the fables that took for granted what she never could have. the feeling of standing on her own, without any aid from the water, sent zaps of excitement through every nerve in her body. the excitement was palpable, a large smile splitting her face in half as she didn't even attempt to hide it.
in all of her elation, she had barely taken notice to the land around her: spire buildings reaching tall into the sky, seemingly poking at the clouds as canals stretched between them. with her new legs wobbling beneath her, ondine wasted not a single second more before finally moving forward. every step felt like a chore, a response that had to be well thought-out in order to make it happen, but ondine wouldn't trade it for the world. she didn't even stop to think about this impossible circumstance, and instead took in every bit of it that she possibly could. and with that, she started down the first street that she could see.
with her hooves (four of them!) clicking lightly against the ground, ondine made her way down the street with the other earth fables. she imagined that they would think her to be one of them, would never doubt her for a second. as she moved closer towards what she assumed was the city center, the buildings seemed to reach up even taller than they had initially looked. the din of conversation rose up around her, fables of all types wandering both alone and in groups, heading in every which way. ondine didn't pay much mind to anyone, or anything, in particular, and instead let her new legs carry her wherever they wished.
and with that, she slowly made her way down the street before her. it almost seemed as if it would never end, stretching on endlessly before her. at this rate, she wouldn't be entirely surprised. it was then that she heard the faint tinkling of a familiar noise, one that called to her even when she wished it wouldn't. as she continued forward, the babbling of water grew even louder, flooding her senses and feeling like a slow weight that was coming to sit directly on her shoulders. it was crushing, seemingly squeezing the very air out of her lungs. in the distance, a tall, white fountain was beginning to come into view. she wished to run: turn away from here and run away from the water that had held her captive her entire life. but even if her new legs could manage that feat, they seemed to gravitate onward. now, as she stood before the tiered fountain, she felt as if her head had been wiped clean of anything but the liquid before her. the hairs on her neck raised and her heart beat hard enough to feel it in her ears, and it was then that she couldn't stop herself from leaning forward. ondine inched closer to the fountain, peering over the edge and directly into the water it held, feeling the faint breeze that whispering breaths created around her. was this water different than that in aethermere, that which held her prisoner?
