It may seem like a weird question, but that's what the quote made me think of, I'm very fond of embroidery you see." She quickly but quietly explained a the end. "You see when you are embordering something, you usually look at just one side of the fabric, as you move the needle back and forth, after some time you will start to see the intended design or picture! But... if you were to look at the other side of the fabric, it can often look like a bit of a jumbled mess, the picture not so clear. And the more detailed the design on the front, the other side will be even more chaotic! But... in the end... it's still just two sides of the same piece of fabric! I think the same can be true of people. Like the quote said, sometimes we appear differently to ourselves or when we're alone and another way when we're with others. But both of those are still you, just two facets of the same whole! And maybe things get confusing, maybe you look at one side trying to see the picture but it's all jumbled like the back of embroidery is. But sometimes it takes time to see the full picture, even with ourselves. So I'd say trust the process, and don't worry too much about which side is the 'real' and which is 'fake' because in the end, you are you!" Solomon pauses for a minute, mulling the words over in their mind. Their gaze takes on a thoughtful glint; their face becoming distant and pensive. "It is relatively simple, when you think about it." Their soft voice resonates with easy, measured candour. "One cannot act one way when in one's own company, and another when in the company of others. Not without confusing the two versions of oneself. Which is true and which is false? One must begin to wonder. I think it is far better to be open and honest with both parties. But only first in being honest with oneself can one be truly honest with others."
They tilt their head to the side in a brief moment of silent contemplation. "Is it not pointless to wear a mask at all?" They muse aloud. "The self is a precious commodity. How truly paranoid must one be to hide it away? Is it the fear of judgement that compels one to don a mask? The fear of exposure? Perhaps a mixture of both."
Solomon takes a small sip of their steaming beverage before returning to the present. "I apologise, it seems I've been rambling." Their steely eyes flicker over to Suni, their expression slipping into something unreadable. "My point still stands. Take it from somebody who has been around far longer than they should have been. Becoming something you are not solely to please others is a waste of time. Find an individual or group of individuals who accept you for who you are. Or better yet, learn to accept who you are yourself. Only then will you find yourself at home in your own skin."

To be so different to everyone else, and then to be left with himself to ponder over who he really is. Is everything just a facade he puts on? A game he pretends to play, where the enemy and the home teams are both played be fragments of himself?

Bullseye wonders these things as he watches his partner and their son joke around as they sip on cocoa. He’d only come to the cafe for drinks. He didn’t want to think about these philosophical questions; in fact, the most philosophical question he even wanted to think about tonight was “How many marshmallows is too many for hot cocoa?” To which he is sure the answer is three.

On one hand, as he gives the question thought, he believes that people are made of fragments of a mirror that is the whole and that there really is no true self. Each person that you choose to spend time with reflects upon those fragments and the pieces of you become different because of the people you associate with. But alone? What happens to that mirror? Is it forced to reflect within itself, casting about and amplifying all characteristics good and bad. Or is it merely a reflective glass surface that then allows the truth to shine through?

Bullseye scowls as he thinks these things and, with a huff, returns to his cocoa. The only people on this whole planet that he cares about being “true” around are Malware and Lucien. Oh, and Sniffles of course.

Rose stood up to the mic and cleared her throat, feeling a little nervous. At least her foot felt better since she had her tumble earlier. One thing to be grateful for, even in the face of anxiety at the moment. The question rang in her ears.
"What does this quote mean to you?"
She opened her mouth silently a moment before answering.
"This quote is stating that if you were to act one way to yourself but another towards everyone else, you'd soon forget which version of yourself is the real you. Say you are quiet and kind when you're alone. You like soft things. You enjoy peace. But around everyone else, it's a lie. You pretend you're a more talkative grouchy person who's tough and likes rough things all the time. Even if it's not true, eventually you'll start believing some of your lies and forget the part of you that's true to yourself. I... Used to be that way."
She shuffled uncomfortably, her wings drooping, her tail swishing slightly.
"I used to pretend to be someone I wasn't, and I lost sight of who I really was in the end. I lost sight of what meant most to me, and that's being true to myself and being the best me I can be. I'm trying to fix that now. So this quote means something special to me. Uhh... Thank you for your time".
Rose dropped the mic and ran out as fast as she could, hiding around the side of the nearest building, panting. Whew was that a lot of hard work!

Cody stared at the young barista for a long moment, before raising an eyebrow. ".. You're not making me do your homework for you or something, are you?" He quipped, only half joking. At Suni's deadpan expression, Cody leaned back, grimacing. "Right, right... Let's see here.... I'm not too good at words myself, but putting it simply, I guess..."

"My guess is that he means that if you behave differently towards yourself versus others, you'll find yourself eventually being confused as to which is the real you. I think in this case it doesn't necessarily have to be 'behaviour' specifically, but also the opinions you have or the beliefs you act on. Personally, I don't know if things are so black and white like that, but it certainly is interesting to think about."

Cody paused, lost in thought as he finished his sentence. There was a moment of comfortable silence between the two before he jolted suddenly, as if realizing where he was. "Oh, sorry," He chuckled sheepishly, "I guess I had more to say than I thought... How did I do, though? Did I answer to your expectations? I've been out of school for a while, so I don't know what you kids study these days...."

Harper looks back at the barista with a confused smirk. "That's certainly quite the opener there. Do you ask that of every kalon who walks through these doors?" He shuts closed the book in his paw and places it back onto the shelf. Walking over to the counter, he rests his elbows on the wooden surface and ponders the question.

"Fortunately, I might have an interesting answer for you. Hawthorne, isn't it? The Scarlett Letter. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of relationship dramas, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for the classics." He flashes a coy grin before continuing to reflect on the question.

"The original quote stems from the context of societal pressures in a Puritanical society. The characters referred to are pressured into hiding some controversial truth about themselves, whether out of fear of physical threat or a guilty conscience. Certainly, the world we enjoy today isn't so strict, but there are still a number of reasons one might conceal a portion of themselves." He leans forward slightly, the glint in his eyes betraying how much he enjoys a good literary analysis.

"Say for instance that you're someone naturally curious at heart. You have a burning, intrinsic desire to know more about the world and wish to hear the thoughts of your fellow kalons. It would be difficult keeping this curiosity to yourself, no? This is why those such as myself cannot stray away from a promising conversation. And why you, I assume, greet those who enter with such a thought-provoking question." Harper briefly raises his eyebrows for confirmation. Receiving nothing more than a fascinated smile from the bartender, he takes a sip of his coffee.

"Mmm, that is wonderful. I've always been a fan of a good French Roast. I tend to drink more acidic roasts these days, but nothing brings back fond memories like that smoky flavor." He quickly finishes the remainder of the cup and passes the empty mug over to Suni. He smiles bashfully.

"That was a lot on my end, I appologize. Although I suppose that's what you're looking for with a question like that. You're quite the listener to have gotten me going for as long as I have!" He laughs sweetly before sliding over the cost of the drink.

"I really must get going, but this was much nicer of a chat than I expected to find here. If you haven't gotten enough of my ramblings yet, I'd love to make my way back here." He politely bows his head, flashes a shy smile, and slips out of the coffee shop.

Themis decides to write the quote Suni offered down on a napkin to take it with her to contemplate. Finding a quiet corner, she cozies up to do a little thinking. While she could just explain the quote given to her, what does it really mean to her personally? That's probably what Suni wanted as an answer to get to know Themis more as one of her customers, but Themis wasn't sure if she was ready to open up like that to someone she had just met. She twiddled her pen in her paws and stared out the window, deep in thought...

"I guess I have a mask... I try to put on a smile and kind face whenever I'm out around other kalons. I hide my anxieties behind a friendly smiles in hopes that it will get me out of situations quickly. In reality, I'm quick to hide and can't bear the thought of lengthy social interactions, especially with strangers. The loudness of everyday, busy life is stressful and scary, and I wish it would muffle to save me from overhearing what everyone around me is saying, regardless if it's about me or not. I hide behind a mask to cover up my general insecurity thanks to being able to hear the world around me clearer than most, and most people don't get to know the real me because of it..."

She sighs, realizing this is way too heavy to share to Suni. Themis walks back over and simply explains what to quote means on a basic level, seemingly pleasing Suni and earns her drink voucher: a good prize to use to mull what she just thought about over. Who knew this trip would come with so much self-reflection?

Airina just kept staring at the paper with a blank face. Her eyes kept tracing the words over and over again, yet she just couldn't figure out what they could possibly mean. After hours of staring at that one line, she finally pieced it together, but she was still left confused.

She thought to herself and was bewildered at the fact some people pretended to be someone they weren't. Airina grew up in a secluded wetland and didn't have too many friends so she never really understood what it meant to adapt someone's personality. She started thinking about however since she took this vacation to the festival she started feeling more lively from being surrounded by happiness. But how could this be the same? It had a positive effect on her after all.

As she thought it over she realized even though she had few friends she certainly did act very different around them. She tried to put on a cooler vibe which led to her becoming exhausted every day. Her exhaustion led to her taking a much-needed vacation in the first place. All of a sudden the quote clicked to her. This happiness she felt was her true self which she had lost along the way of trying to make herself cooler for her friends.

She thought to herself about how much a simple quote meant to her now. A few words on a piece of paper made her realize who she truly was so she could live her true self.

Or maybe perhaps Alaska was just not used to these sorts of friendly interactions. She furrowed her brows in thought. She enjoyed literature analysis, so it wasn’t so much so understanding the quote was but putting her feelings about the quote in words out loud proved to be difficult.
“Well, I suppose the meaning of the quote is that one person cannot pretend to be someone they are not. That someone’s best self is one where they do not lie about who they are to themselves or others.” She relaxes and opens up a bit, perhaps talking a bit more to herself then Suni. “To me, being myself authentically can be difficult. I want to sometimes pretend I’m this kalon whose all this and that, but I’m not really. I hope one day I feel confident to be who I am around both myself and others.”
Alaska smiles awkwardly. The beat of silence that follows makes her nervous so she rambles on.
“Oh, did I get this all horribly wrong? Is this how this question works? Am I holding up the line?”
