When Roxie was a kid, she would help her mom around the salon. She always act like she was cleaning, but really she was watching her mom. She loved to see people's faces light up when they were happy with their new look, and wanted more than anything to be able to do that for them. Through the years, she kept that dream. Currently, she owns her own salon/boutique that she runs with her best friend.

The young woman’s paws danced gracefully across the glossed violin, the bow ticking back and forth with beautifully rythmic strokes. She opened her maw wide, a sweet and thick voice pouring from her throat. The words she sang were French, the syllables smooth and strong. The song continued, her violin growing loud and more vigorous as the melody went on, her voice growing in volume. The sounds met at a high point, the woman’s voice reaching the high peak without a crack. The violin grew more quiet, the last few moments of the song calm and soothing. Belle smiled, ecstatic eyes releasing the tension from her shoulders. The crowd roared in front of her, their voices mingling together in a wave of praises. Bright red roses floated onto the stage, Belle leaning to pick a few up. She laughed gleefully, blowing a kiss towards her bustling audience before walking off of the stage, violin in paw. Belle loved the thrill of performing, and loved the feeling of the powerful violin strings beneath her paws even more. Her music was a flowing escape, one that she loved with all of her heart.

A gentle shake woke Cami from her sleep. She sluggishly lifted her head, eyes struggling to adjust to the bright sickly lights of the waiting room. “She’s alright, sweetheart.” Cami stiffened in her chair, tension apparent in her grip on the fabric. “She’s stable for now. You’re allowed in the room.” The nurse walked off down the hall, Cami’s gaze following her until she disappeared into the busy hospital walls. She got up slowly, legs creaking beneath her like rusting metal. She carefully grasped the homemade bouquet of flowers beside her, taking care not to tare the wrapping paper around it. Cami stiffly walked to the front desk, telling the woman who she was going to see. The woman told Cami the room number, but she had memorized it by heart by this point; room 72. She walked through the halls in a haze, her eyes unfocused and confused. Her paws carried her to the door, where she stopped to stare at the handle. Cami reaches out, paws shaking. She carefully grasps the handle, closing her eyes hard before pushing the door open with a deafening creak. Cami slowly blinked her eyes open at the silence that followed, and regretted soon after. The young woman—no older than 17— laid in the bed, motionless. She breathed shallowly and rasped every time she took air in. Her entire neck and chest were wrapped tightly with off-white bandages. Tears began to swell behind Cami’s eyes as she closed the door behind her, walking towards the bed. She pulled out one of the chairs, sitting down beside her. Cami reached toward the clipboard at the end of the bed, snatching it up and going over the notes written in blood red pen. Cami’s vision blurred as she read the diagnosis and life expectancy. They didn’t think she was going to live, and it was apparent that they weren’t even going to try to change that. Cami threw the clipboard to the floor, tears dripping onto the yellow petals of the sunflowers in her paws. She gasped in as she cried, voice shaking. “Look, Em. I finally made you a bouquet. I know I promised to do it a long time ago.. I’m sorry I never did..” Cami’s voice lowered to a whisper as the sentence ended, struggling to breathe through her tearful rasps. “I can’t do this.” Cami lept to her feet, tossing the flowers into the chair before moving to open the door. As her paw met the handle, a loud beeping noise echoed through the room. Cami turned as the machine flashed a flat line, the beeping continuing. Doctors and nurses burst through the door, pushing her aside as they rushed to Em’s side. They pounded on her chest, struggling to breathe life back into the girls chest. The line didn’t move. Her body had given up. The world silenced at that moment, the beeping echoing through Cami’s head. She could’ve swore that her heart stopped then, too.

“Emma Carina died on January 17th, 2019 at 6:34 p.m. She had been fighting for 2 months before her injuries were too much for her to bare. Officials say that she and a friend were driving at night when the crash that ultimately killed Emma took place. Emma was not the driver, and only she received injury. The driver, a close friend of Emma’s, asked for us to keep her name confidential-” Cami quickly turned the TV off, a dark expression passing over her features. She looked in the mirror as she fixed her hair, straightening out her black dress. Tears rose to her eyes as her mother called for her, but she pretended to smile as she joined her in the car.

Em’s funeral was not special. It was held at the small church on Main Street, with only about a dozen people coming to see her buried. Speeches were given as somber music was played over the speakers, half-hearted jokes rewarded themselves with half-hearted laughs from the crowd. The service only lasted about 45 minuets before Em was buried. Cami sat in her mother’s car and cried into her paws as she was buried, being unable to face what she had done.

Everyone retired to their vehicles and left about an hour later. Cami’s mother came, and she watched as her daughter got out of the car and slowly trotted towards the new grave. There was no headstone yet, only a tiny marker with lazy writing. It seemed like a joke. Cami kneeled down, laying the sunflower bouquet onto the upturned dirt. Fresh tears fell onto the grave as she silently cried, internally saying her goodbyes and apologies to the best friend she’d never get back. 30 minuets later, Cami sat in the passenger side, silence stretching across the car.

Cami slowly opened her bedroom door, stripping off her shoes as she flopped onto her bed. She buried her face in the pillow, hollowness filling her chest. Cami lifted her head as extremely bright sunlight beamed through her window, sending a blinding glow into her eyes. She lifted herself out of bed, grumbling as she got up to close the window and then the curtains. She paused in front of her desk, a breath of air paused in her throat. A single sunflower sat on the wood, it’s petals bright and lively. Cami picked up the flower with shaking paws, tears dribbling onto the petals. The sunshine filtered through the window, sending a halo of light over the girl.
