Silken Kats - Base Coats - DNP

Postby Thelastsilhouette » Sun Sep 07, 2025 12:39 pm

Base Coat:

Silken Kats can show a rainbow variety of color due to their Base Coat

R - Red , B - Blue, Y - yellow

Capital letters are dominant and will show, lower case are recessive and will not show.

RR/bb/yy - Is red dominant and will always pass the red gene to their offspring
Rr/bb/yy - Isn't red dominant and might pass a dominant red gene to their offspring

rr/BB/yy - Is blue dominant and will always pass the blue gene to their offspring
rr/Bb/yy - Isn't blue dominant and might pass a dominant blue gene to their offspring

rr/bb/YY - Is Yellow dominant and will always pass the yellow gene to their offspring
rr/bb/Yy - Isn't yellow dominant and might pass a dominant blue gene to their offspring

What happens if a dominant blue gene and a dominant red gene pass? good question!
Then we get;
Rr/Bb/yy - Which means that the Silken Kat is going to show a purple base coat
RR/Bb/ yy - Does this mean purple too? Yes it does!
RR/BB/yy - this does as well
Rr/BB/yy - So many ways to show a purple base coat

That's all the ways we can show purple but we can also end up with green and orange base coats in a similar fashion.

If we have a dominant blue gene and a dominant yellow gene we get green like so:
rr/Bb/Yy - Green base coat here we go
rr/BB/Yy - Green again my friend
rr/BB/YY - You see what I mean when we get green
rr/Bb/YY - Now we get blue (Just kidding!) Still green

Third time's the charm, if we have a dominant red gene and a dominant yellow gene we get orange just like the first two;
Rr/bb/Yy - Orange you glad I didn't say banana
RR/bb/Yy - I have no more orange jokes but this is orange as well
RR/bb/YY - Orange again
Rr/bb/YY - Duck a l'orange but without the duck, lol.

Now what happens if a dominant gene from all three pass? I'm glad you asked, then we get black
Rr/Bb/Yy
RR/Bb/Yy
Rr/BB/Yy
Rr/Bb/YY
RR/Bb/YY
RR/BB/Yy
Rr/BB/YY
So on and so forth, as long as one of each base coat gene is dominant, then black should be expressed.

What happens if no dominant genes pass? Then we get white!
rr/bb/yy

Can we get white any other way? Not as the base coat, this is the only way to pass it through the coat color but piebald is available to add a splash of white to any fun colorations we have available.

When the base coat itself is white, no marking should be available to be seen on the Kat, consider them similar to an albino animal in real life.

Silken Kats - Genes Available in the Breed - DNP

Postby Thelastsilhouette » Sun Sep 07, 2025 1:04 pm

Genes Available so far are as follows:

Free:

Socks
- Causes a white marking to show up on the paws, can be just toes or to about midway up the legs.

Under
- Causes a lighter accenting marking along the underside of the Kat. Should be similar to the base coat of the Kat.

Tears
- Similar to the markings you'd find on a cheetah but with a bit more of a variety of how the tears can express, should flow from the eyes down but can choose to connect with the mouth or extend to the cheek instead. It cannot do both.

Minimal White
- Can add a splash of white on the face, tip of the tail or somewhere in the neck/chest/belly area. Should show as white and shouldn't look patchy or have multiple splashes of white that might be mistaken for a form of piebald.

Common:

Dorsal
- Causes a darker stripe of color to go along the center of the back, can range from the top of the head along the tail to the tip. Should be similar to the base coat in color

Scruff
- Fur around the neck of the Kat can show darker or lighter than the base coat. Scruff should be easily identified and shouldn't be confused for the Under marking.

Flecking
- Causes flecks of darker coloration across the design, can range from looking similar to freckles on the face or over the whole design, should be darker than what it sits over but similar in color to the base coat

Sooty
- Acts like Siamese on cats and causes areas around the legs, tail, face and ears to be darker than the rest of the body, should be a smooth blend from lighter to darker areas and similar in color to the base coat.

Dapple
- A marking that causes subtle spots to be lighter, similar to sunlight peeking through the foliage of a tree.

Uncommon:

Masked
- Think of a raccoon, the masking should be around the eyes and can choose to connect inbetween the eyes or not.

Tabby
- Can express like tabby in cats.

Piebald
- Think of piebald on horses for ideas on this gene.

Rosettes
- Leopard like, can choose to have the dots in the center or not

Rare:

Clouded Leopard
- I think this gene is self explanatory

Panda
- Similar to panda markings but can be dark or lighter than the base coat

Calico
- Koi fish type calicos

Diluted
- Dilution gene cause the base coat to soften to a pastel color across the whole body

Very Rare:

Barred
- Similar to the barring that can be seen on various bird species

Roan
- Roan like horses

Okapi
- Get ideas on the design from the okapi animal.

Mutations:

Vitiligo
- A genetic mutation that causes patches of white in various shapes and sizes across the bod. Hereditary.

Shift
- When a Kat should show green/orange/purple etc.. the Shift gene will separate the combination to it's primary genes.
Ex: If a green Kat gets the Shift mutation, instead of the whole body being green, the kat will have a yellow shift to blue base coat instead. Hereditary

Chimerism
- When two genotypes fuse and cause one Kat to look like a patchwork design of two separate Kats fused into one. Random.
