The tangle of wermz hits Guilla like a falling meteor, with all the same force, fanfare, and fiery light. The Fetch scrambles around the larger werm, his claws tearing through some of Guilla's leaves as he does. All the while the fluffy werm thrashes, howling in that low droning whine, flashing rapidly now. Guilla squeezes their eyes shut and claws against the dirt, slithering across the sand to free themself from the squabble. They blink the dust out of their eye, brow crumpled in pain.

"S-stop!" They croak out. "What you are doing isn't nice. It's hurting them! I didn't want..."

Just as they step forwards to intervene, a large clawed hand clamps down on their shoulder. A sweet voice washes over their leaves like the moonlight--

"Well, we wouldn't want you getting hurt either."

The merchant moves over them with what seems like impossibly nimble movements for his sheer mass. He’s a lean werm, but hefty, and the cheap tchotchkes stuffed into every coat pocket normally rattle around at the tiniest motions. Not now; he glides like a shadow between the Fetch and his quarry.

The merchant’s formidable tail looms over Guilla. Guilla shrinks as some of their own leaves are crumpled underfoot. The hand comes closer, and closer, and closer, until it blots out their view of the moon. They squeeze their eyes shut—and shoot their claws out.

Nothing.

Guilla almost loses balance. They stumble over, but find purchase on the merchant’s enormous tail. How had they missed? They open their eyes and blink at the pouches and satchels that broke their fall. They follow the werm’s tail to its tip.

The Fetch wriggles furiously in the merchant’s iron grip. Guilla feels a firm paw return to his shoulder.

“’Ey now. Play nice, you two.”

“What--? What are you doing?!” The Fetch kicks his hindpaws and spits. “You’re lee-əə-eetting it get away! You’re ruining everything!”

Guilla blinks. The Fetch is right—the other werm is missing. They scan the horizon and find a little white streak, there. It disappears into the howling winds of the wasteland.

“You idiot! Let me go! You promised! I did my part, you said you’d help me--!”

“I changed my mind.” The merchant opens his hand, unceremoniously dropping the other werm on the dirt. “And now you’ve blown our ‘ole operation. How do you like that?”

The Fetch just sits there and looks up at him like an outraged mockingbird. He doesn’t know what to say to that.

Returning to the ruins yesterday brought up nothing for the search for Veil, the few tufts of fur were nowhere to be found. If it hadn't been for finding a relic, Cedar would've been completely put off by scavenging today. They decide to bring the team to the same general area, slightly hopeful for something again.
