-sacrificing to an alarming degree, and he is m
ost content when his work ethic displays his se
dulous mindset. roland has never been one for
false displays of chivalry, though. while moder
ately courteous and even refined to a certain
extent, roland is not the type of knight to fea
ture a gaudily gallant exhibit. he does not car
e for immense praise or acts that are showy b
y nature; roland prefers solitude over anythin

does not have much of a connection to his homeland. he has littl
e interest in dornish customs and even less of a fascination with
its culture. in fact, he has only visited starfall a handful of times
since leaving for highgarden as a child, and the longest he's ever
stayed at his family's ancestral home since childhood was for the
funerals of his two siblings. as a result, roland has very little con
necting him to dorne and its people. having grown up in the reac
h, roland was raised beneath the ascendancy of tyrell agitprop a
nd indoctrination. most of his political beliefs and opinions align
with those of the crown's, as he was quite literally raised by thos
e who participated in the tyrell rebellion. according to roland's
maternal aunt, "[ser roland] is far more of a reachman than min
e own children"—a telling assessment when one realizes that, p
er the iron concordat, his aunt took to husband a lord of the rea
ch. as expected, roland is not a beloved figure amongst the subj
ects of house dayne and house martell; there is even less love f
or him amongst the people of dorne III. despite having spent a m
ajority of his life outside of dorne, roland possesses one hundred
percent dornish blood. the paternal side of his family, house day
ne, is one of the oldest noble families in the seven kingdoms, as
well as one of the most enigmatic (there have been records of l
ords and ladies of house dayne being born with amethyst eyes,
despite having no clear lineage to valyria or essos). his mother
's side of the family, the martells, rule the southeastern deserts
of westeros from the city of sunspear. one of the great houses
of the seven kingdoms and the ruling house of dorne, house ma
rtell has suffered greatly for their participation in the rebellio
n. a number of its members perished during and after the war,
with roland's mother and her older sister, princess ismerei, the
sole survivors of house martell's massacre following the conclu
ding demise of their father. since ascending the dornish thron
e as a teenager, princess ismerei has deposited herself as one
of westeros's few ruling noble ladies, untethered from the tra
ditional principles of the seven kingdoms. her marriage was a
joint arrangement created between her father and the crown,
and shortly before the prince of dorne died ismerei was wed t

o a lord of house oakheart in an effort to soothe strained relati
ons between the reach and dorne. evidently, it did not work. th
ey have two children together with their eldest child, prince da
lton, the current heir of sunspear. he is betrothed to a lady of h
ouse peake in appeasement of the iron concordat's wishes. mar
cher lords from the dornish marshes, the peakes have historical
ly proved meddlesome for the people of dorne as they proudly
defended the realms of the storm kings and kings of the reach
against dornish incursions; the crown hopes that a marriage al
liance between the martells and the sly marsher lords of hous
e peake could help strengthen the relationship between the t
wo regions. it is not a popular betrothal arraignment, especia
lly with the princess of dorne. known as the queen snake of d
orne (the similarities between her and her sister are not unin
tentional), princess ismerei is just as inhospitable, scornful a
nd cunning as her sibling. she has little love in her heart for t
he tyrells and has not stepped foot outside of dorne since king
rickard's coronation decades ago. she sends her husband and
children in her stead whenever dorne's presence is required i
n king's landing, and she does not care if the royal family per
ceives her actions as an insult or not. in most cases, her deci
sions are made with insincere intentions, as she has no troubl
e making her displeasures apparent IV. roland was anointed s
word of the morning several months ago by his father after d
efeating rogue bandits skull face and the laughing knight in s
ingle-handed combat. leaders of a fearsome coterie of highw
ay robbers and raiders known as the brotherhood of raven's r
ook, skull face and the laughing knight were infamous for pil
laging, murdering and burning their way along the banks of t
he trident, and the crown soon dispatched a handful of its kn
ight inquisitors, gold cloaks and ser roland dayne to handle th
e threat. while the king's men were successful in eradicating
the brotherhood of raven's rook, it cost them a number of liv
es and a plethora of nasty injuries to boot. roland was succe
ssful in killing skull face and the laughing knight in a 2v1 but
not without obtaining injuries of his own, with the most taxi
ng being a fracture of his right femur from skull face's bloodi
ed mace. until recently, he was bedridden on maester's orde

rs in order to heal quickly, effectively and safely V. roland is a prisoner of the rules he lives by. while some may call it unwilling naïvety, ser roland calls it comfort. there is consolation to be found in uniformity and honor but a golden cage is still a cage, no matter how gilded you insist it must be. roland is not the type of person to put himself out of his comfort zone, and that includes entertaining the hard truth. roland has lived a lie for so many years that he truly believes in his own self freedom, and he truly believes that every choice he has made in his life is one hundred percent influenced by his own rationality, not by his troubled childhood and desire for stability. is he truly a loyal man or were those senses of devotion instilled in him by those who trained him to be the man he is today? he has no identity in the form of a homeland or proud family, and he appears to operate for others more than he does himself. he hides from the cold truth by surrounding himself with familiar settings and objectives. he is more avoidant and evasive than anything else, if not somewhat delusional to the circumstances surrounding his childhood. roland is not the type of person to face his problems head-on. it is easier for roland to take comfort in falsehoods than handle the unpleasantries of his own emotions and family turmoil. he is an escapist that way and tends to bury himself into the tedious acts of knighthood to avoid his own disturbances. it is one of many reasons he takes his duties so seriously. he tends to uphold certain values to an almost unreasonable degree in order to maintain a semblance of control over his own personal being. the notion that he may have been a prisoner to state of affairs rather than a opportunist of fate growing up disturbs him, damn his attempts to hide it.
