Miles grew up always taking care of his siblings and mother. His father was out on the farm with the hired help all the time, so someone had to be the man of the house. He always made sure that his siblings were going to school outside of harvest season, encouraging them to think about college and high-skill jobs. He wanted to make sure that they knew that they could do anything in life if they wanted to. His father has pressured him to take over the farming business, but Miles refused, not really caring for farming. He wants to be a journalist, writing books and for the newspaper. However, he has to keep all these hopes and dreams to himself. There are more important things for him to be doing, like worrying about the gang. Since his mother died, he has resented the gang and their crimes. He's quiet and keeps mostly to himself when he's in town. However, Miles can be pretty naive and gullible. He can't see through many lies and trusts the people he cares about easily. He's a hopeless romantic, falling in love pretty easily. When he was about 19, he had a crush on one of the hired help that was working with his father, still hiding the fact that he was bisexual. He confessed his feelings to the man, only to be rejected and insulted. Miles hides his crushes and feelings since, not telling anyone. However, he'll write down all his feelings at night in his journal.

- grew up on a ranch that was bought out by a competing landowner through
underhanded means. his family suffered for it, and carp left home at an early
age to pursue other employment to send money back to his parents
- worked for a few years as a cartographer, but eventually turned to bounty
hunting
- harbors a silent disdain for the law as it did his family little good. he
believes in the goodness of people over what he sees as a corrupt power
trying to to exert control. still operates under a moral compass, but he's
willing to bend more than a few rules. sympathetic to the freedom trials gang
as they do little to harm the common folk (he's yet to interact w/ any member
of the gang, however)
- prefers to talk first, shoot second. he's charming enough when he puts his mind
to it. always tries to bring in outlaws alive rather than dead
- has garnered a local reputation for being a generally helpful guy

- recently suffered a debilitating shot in his dominant hand. currently on the
hunt for a capable doctor to extract the bits of lead left inside. until then, his
shooting prowess is severely inhibited (i was thinking if the medic role in the
gang gets filled, it could be a plot point for carp to seek them out for assistance?)
