♦︎Magic

Magic essence is taken from dragon blood, which is normally poached from dragons and (rarely) given as a gift from a dragon, and in order to actually unlock the abilities of the magic one must either soak a wearable item or charm in it or drink it. The wearer of an item can only use the magic if they are wearing it or have it with them, and it is as strong as the surface area it takes up (so larger items like armour give more powerful abilities as opposed to a pendant). If you drink dragon’s blood, you can use the magic for around an hour. A single drop could give you abilities for around 15 minutes, where if you drink an entire cup the high concentration could kill you (unless you’re a dragon).

The type of magic you get is automatically the type of magic used by the dragon the blood is from, and it has null effects if someone drinks it and they are what is referred to as a Scale Descendant. Scale Descendants are more rare than dragons themselves, because this means they quite literally have dragon blood going through their veins. Extremely old/strong/Titan dragons can take on a human form and though it is extremely unlikely, a few create close enough relationships to a chosen human to pretty much become human themselves. This is very uncommon because in doing this, the dragon will forfeit their ability to transform along with their immensely longer lifespan (and also most dragons see themselves as above humans socially so they usually won’t bother with liking a human in some way. This is also why the dragons that can transform usually don’t take on human riders). Because the dragon’s new entirely-human form still holds the condensed magic from their dragon blood they are known as Sorcerers who have magic that is more powerful than the magic of a normal dragon. Any children the sorcerers have also have magic that can be used without an item, but it is weaker than the sorcerer themself.

- dragon blood is purple so the colour is worn by a lot of royalty and higher classes because it is associated with magic and strength

- Some magic items are heirlooms and are passed on through families; there are definitely some pretty tricky thieves that find these targets easier than dragons themselves

- There are spellbooks that exist, but you must use them while drinking dragon’s blood
And that would cancel out the effects of the dragon’s element. These are typically stronger than normal magic. These are also what sorcerers used to seal away Hotei in the story

♠︎Dragons

Dragons are beings with magic blood that gives them the abilities they are known for, the majority of these abilities including various elemental breath abilities. There are rarely others, such as certain psychic abilities and creation/summoning magic, though they have been practically wiped out from the dragon hunting. The hunting of dragons has greatly decreased the biodiversity of dragons, and because of this there are none left that are old enough to be Titan dragons.

- dragons communicate between each other through unique hums that sound almost like a song! The more a dragon uses their breath power the more their voices get garbled though, and while this fact is often used to determine if a dragon is friendly or not, this is not a definite factor! Some dragons use their breath ability often specifically to sound intimidating and others use their breath ability for nonviolent cases.

- scales are normally protective armour, but for lighter and faster dragons their scales are actually softer like feathers and (rarely) fur! They are still protective but work more for the elements (helping with keeping cool and making sure the dragon isn’t overheated/freezes). They are a lot easier to pierce with human weapons though, and this makes them more of a target for those searching for dragon blood.

- Titan Dragons are considered to be the strongest type of dragon; many are large, ancient, and extremely powerful, however this is largely in part because older dragons tend to understand how exactly to become a Titan dragon more than younger, more rash dragons. A dragon can become a Titan if it bonds with a specific nondragon creature enough to swear it’s loyalty, which is both very insulting and potentially dangerous for the dragon. This most commonly happens between humans and dragons since the bonded pair has to have a high enough intelligence to understand fully what is going on. The reason for this is that, once pledging loyalty to the being, the dragon and creature must take on a task from a deity that is life-threatening for both of them. In the case that they fail and one of the pair dies whilst doing the trial, the deity will strike down the surviving being. So far, Hotei and Justine are the youngest bonded pair.

[Terms To Know]


•Multenera - The nation this rp will take place in

•New Heartessa - the inland capital, where one of the two ruling human families reigns

•Navem - the port capital, known for trade and the first to introduce new technology to the people. This is somewhat close to the Scorched Expanse but it had good enough defences to persevere through the fires. This is where the second ruling family lives
* there are two capitals in order to have some stability if one is lost to disaster (again)

•The Scorched Expanse - a blackened land of ash and ruin on the south end of the continent. It is still as destroyed as the day it fell, though there is a small amount of new growth that has fought its way through the harsh conditions. It is said that treasure can still be found here but humans will rarely set foot nearby

•The volcano - the largest volcano in the land, offshore of Navem. This is the fabled resting place of Hotei the Titan Dragon

•Dragon Blood - Exactly what it sounds like. Dragon blood is the life force of magic and can grant the abilities of the dragon it is from to humans that drink it or wear an object infused with it. Please see the ‘Magic’ lore for more information

•Titan Dragon - these dragons are large and often ancient compared to human standards. The title of ‘Titan’ refers more to the abilities of these dragons than their actual size. These kinds of dragons can also take on a humanoid form and many have given up their long lifespan to become fully human. The last known Titan Dragon was Hotei, since these were the very first dragons targeted when humans and dragons began officially fighting.

•Sorcerers - Titan Dragons who have chosen to become human. They hold a high status in human society because of their magical capabilities, however since they still have dragon blood there is also a constant threat of assassins if they out themselves. Not many sorcerers remain, and the few that do are very old.

•The Underground - the black market of Multenera, a group that deals in dragon blood and magic items. They work for the very wealthy and their antics are sketchy, doing anything they can for a quick dime or dragon powers themselves.

•Scale Descendant - more rare than dragons themselves, Scale Descendants are the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of a sorcerer. Since part of their blood concentration is dragon blood they will be able to use small amounts of elemental magic from their relative. If they use other dragon blood it cancels out any magic effects for the time they use it. The ruling family currently in New Heartessa is known for having this kind of bloodline

Brief History: he was one of the young dragons that fled due to his mother’s prompting when the clash happened, curling up on some steep cliffs of a mountain not far from Navem. As he slept he grow to be a juvenile and woke with the resurrection bird’s prompting.

Brief personality traits: He is, like his power, naturally cold and indifferent most of the time. He doesn't mean to offend anyone or anything but he does prefer doing things his own way and holding onto a 'loner' type of lifestyle. He also seems to look down upon others fairly often, though he will help others if he deems the project within his ability to complete. Lukas is also a very prideful dragon and is known for using his intelligence, keen judgement, logic, and flexibility to his advantage. He will often overestimate what he can do and doesn't like to waste time. Lukas can send very mixed signals with his responses and is rather blunt at times, though he is often unaware of the confusion he can cause because of it. His strength and arrogance are his two biggest faults.

Likes: fruit, roots, mushrooms, birds, snow, cold weather, clever banter, being looked up to, a good spar, being dramatic

Dislikes: human activity, humans, fire, heat, overreacting, anyone in his personal space

Brief History: Her parents are both part of the city’s guard, but are too young to know the attacks of dragons. They fought against bandits and any crime within the city, and with this influence Aria and her siblings have grown tough and protective of those they care about. Despite her parents’ positions, their family is actually from Thealus, the nation that just gave Multenera a revival bird.

Brief personality traits: defensive, friendly, battle-ready; morally grey, though not cruel; money-driven but will typically help others out for free (though will make sure those she helps are quiet about it); missions take first priority, she is extremely loyal to those who pay her, and if betrayed then she is very petty

Likes: the concept of dragons, money, sleeping under the stars, open minded people, friendly fighting, her dog, food

Dislikes: bugs, cheating of any kind, being retrained, expectations, posh people

Their bangs are longer and there is shoulder-length hair in front of their ears; their expression is often full of hope and innocence, and their smile can brighten a room

Brief History: He was raised with the tales of Justine and their dragon, and has grown up thinking it the fault of the dragon that Justine died. This has skewed Jack’s perspective enough that he blames all dragons for the destruction and death of a lot of humans (starting with Justine). Aside from this his family was not exactly a noble but still quite well-off. He only recently moved to Navem.

Brief personality traits: peppy but very spiteful, quick to make decisions, can be very inspiring and agreeable, is pretty selfish in survival situations and priorities his own visions. Has remarkable leadership skills and is quite popular with those of a higher status. He wears mostly violet and black clothing, meaning that he can be seen as intimidating or a hero (since violet is associated with dragon blood). They can be a bit of a narcissist.

Likes: human progress, being powerful, magic, those close to them, their looks, short hair

Dislikes: ‘friends’ based on their position, dragons, being vulnerable, people who oppose them

Physical Description: Dusk is lean, muscular, and athletic with sun-tanned skin. Anyone can tell he is an active young man. His unkempt brown hair is somewhat long and always a thick tousled mess, but he loves when it blows dramatically in the wind. He has stormy-grey eyes that dance with mischief.
Brief History: Dusk grew up on the sleepy outskirts of the city. He learned swordfighting from his mother, who would train him when she came home from her city guard job. Occasionally this little punk would try following his mom to work. He was always busted and kicked out because twelve-year-old boys can't be guardsmen.
Personality: Dusk has a laid-back attitude and loves to have a good time. Nothing seems to intimidate this bold-spirited youth. Despite his outgoing and prideful nature, he's not a self-centered jerk; instead, he uses his high confidence to lift others up with him. This young man has a heart of gold, but that is also his fatal flaw. Any assertions that people are 'dangerous' will bounce off his back because he insists people are good at heart.
Likes: Hearty home cooked meals, lifting others' mood and confidence, making friends, catching and releasing fish, a good ol' sparring match
Dislikes: Formal clothes, the idea that anyone is 'born evil', hurting others, pessimism and defeatism
Abilities: Dusk has no magical abilities, but he's a talented swordsman. He's great at incapacitating others without bringing serious harm. Even when opponents are reckless and brash, Dusk is able to hold back from severely injuring them.
Strengths: Physically strong, can run fast and far, talented fighter at close range, great at fishing, maintains an upbeat attitude in difficult situations, amazingly talented cook
Weaknesses: Unaware of surroundings, easily manipulated, underestimates others' dark sides, has difficulty coping with hunger, pride can cause issues

Physical Description: Standing at 5'4", Maleena is well-toned with white-blonde curls not quite falling to her shoulders which contrast somewhat with her warmer shade of skin. Her down-turned eyes have grey-green irises and she has high cheekbones and bow-shapes lips.
Brief History:
Maleena's great grandmother was a prominent figure in the Underground's attack on Justine and Hotei. She was always taught that dragons were a scourge on this world, good only for their blood. As sellers of this scarce magical liquid the Briarwood family are affluent in the Underground, though their wealth has begun to dwindle alongside the dragon blood.
Brief Personality Traits:
Seemingly confident and leaderly, even enough to seem arrogant, Maleena secretly worries she'll never match up to her family's legacy. Though dragon blood has provided her with luxury, her dealings with the underground has left her thick-skinned and stubborn, refusing to back down from those who think themselves superior.
Likes: Luxury, selling dragon blood, feeling superior.
Dislikes: Magic, dragons (particularly Hotei), that volcano, being told what to do.
Abilities: Maleena strongly believes in the merit of one's own abilities, not trusting anyone who uses magic, even if she sells the ability to do so. However,though she doesn't realise, a necklace handed down to her, its pendant a vial that once held dragon's blood, is actually the real reason she has such accurate aim.
Strengths: Accurate with any ranged weapon though only knows how to use a crossbow, fairly handy with her fists or a decent knife too, persuasive and has plenty of contacts.
Weaknesses: Stubborn, determined to prove herself worthy, being caught face-to-face with any real melee weapon would probably prove fateful, proud, poor defense against magic.
Trivia: • Absolutely freaked out by those earthquakes
•Has helped her family sell dragon blood since she was 13, now that the dragon blood is running low she's having to think about having to look into some of the Underground's less pleasant jobs.

Appearance:
Feroz is a feathered serpant-type dragon and so has no wings nor legs, looking much like a snake only he is covered in feathers. These feathers are in a gradient of purples (see the image of the bird) and are sleek and smooth over the majority of his serpentine body. Large tufts of these feathers are present of Feroz's head and tail however. He has narrow golden eyes and a tough forehead plated with bronze coloured scales, the only place on his body not covered in feathers, which can be used to ram opponents. He has long, snake-like fangs which are always sharp and a narrow-forked tongue. His voice is quite garbled, sounding more like gusts of wind than the pretty dragon song of a pure dragon voice, since his breath power is used to assist his wingless flight.
Personality:
Feroz acts haughty enough in front of humans that they'd believe him to be an ancient dragon, not just a mere juvenile. He is certainly intelligent, though not as wise as he'd like to seem, but his stubborn nature and unwillingness to compromise detracts from his smarts. Despite his contempt for humans suggesting at an apparent belief that dragons are the superior species he's also quick to jump to their defence, showing admiration for their creativity, resilience and determination. Amongst his own kind Feroz's ego is less profound, though he can still be irritable, and he treats any dragon elder than him with the utmost respect. He is in awe of Hotei, as with all Titan dragons, gazing at them with admiration which was partly the reason why he agreed to teach a scrawny human to ride. His words are generally careful and well-measured and is fairly naive when it comes to what, he would call, 'human emotions'.

'The Undergound', humans, his old rider Io, the cold and dark (AKA the cave he woke up in)
Strengths:
With his serpentine movements Feroz is fast and graceful, very difficult to catch and able to fly through the smallest crevices. He has sharp teeth and the plated patch upon his head gives him a strong headbutt. His feathers are also unlike a bird's, being armour-like in strength and also water repellent, allowing Feroz to do well in water as well as in air and to resist arrows. He is also fairly intelligent.
Weaknesses:
Feroz is clearly a dragon of speed rather than one of strength. Though his feathers provide some armour there are many angles in which an arrow could pierce his hide. Lacking limbs means that his only offenses revolve around his head, putting him in greater danger. His breath power allowing him to create gusts of wind is also not the most powerful of offensive weapons.
Extra Information:
• Before hibernation Feroz was given the task of teaching a human, Io Brie, to ride in the hopes that she would one day be able to ride alongside her dear friend Justine Beaufield. He accepted simply in the hopes that he would end up with the great honour of flying besides the great Hotei. Io and Ferox were a tempestuous duo, always arguing about her poor riding skills and pretty much everything else though oddly the pair never gave up on the lessons. Unfortunately their dreams of flying alongside Justine and Hotei were never fulfilled, as the underground attacked before Io built enough skill to do so.

Brief History: With a family tree marred by young deaths and mysterious disappearances and later muddled with adoptions and changes in identity, Xiaoyue has no real way of knowing who she might have any blood ties to. As such she isn't actually aware of where her dragon blood came from or how long it has been in her family or even if the people who raised her have any. A semi-recent incident has left her disowned and disinherited from her name with more questions and no answers. She has taken to performing in the streets as a dancer and fortune teller to make a living until she finds some greater purpose.

Brief personality traits: Xiaoyue has an optimistic streak large enough to eclipse the sun, much less the shadow of her past. She delights in attention and enjoys making somewhat of a spectacle of herself, often telling stories between her dances to lure a large crowd. She holds her convictions close to her heart and doesn't mind to put herself in danger to uphold them--part of the reason she's been disowned in the first place.

Brief History: Adam was sold to a notoriously cruel captain as a boy to get his family out of debt and has spent his life since aboard various ships. He had lied, cheated, and stolen his way through the ranks and used his ill-gotten gains to buy enough loyalty to overthrow the captain before him and seize control of the ship as the new captain, turning the crew to piracy with the promise of further riches and the plunder of every port city--his current sights set on the royal treasures of Navem and whatever dragon blood remains.

Brief personality traits: Adam has always been cruel and selfish--a side effect of his upbringing no doubt, but one that has made even life long members of his crew grow worried as the years go on. He's arrogant, often going out of his way to taunt port authorities by openly displaying a brand on his wrist that marks him as a pirate and deliberately braiding his hair to resemble a noose hanging loosely around his neck.

Abilities: Growing up aboard a ship Adam learned to be proficient with swords and firing cannons, though this is a learned skill rather than a magical one. After a particularly worthwhile haul he had tattoos done on his arms infused with dragon blood, strengthening the effects when he manages to steal more to drink. This also has the effect of making the tattoos react to the blood, glowing and springing to life with flame. His current stock is empty, though he's looking to fix that.

Physical Description: Standing at 5'4", Maleena is well-toned with white-blonde curls not quite falling to her shoulders which contrast somewhat with her warmer shade of skin. Her down-turned eyes have grey-green irises and she has high cheekbones and bow-shapes lips.
Brief History:
Maleena's great grandmother was a prominent figure in the Underground's attack on Justine and Hotei. She was always taught that dragons were a scourge on this world, good only for their blood. As sellers of this scarce magical liquid the Briarwood family are affluent in the Underground, though their wealth has begun to dwindle alongside the dragon blood.
Brief Personality Traits:
Seemingly confident and leaderly, even enough to seem arrogant, Maleena secretly worries she'll never match up to her family's legacy. Though dragon blood has provided her with luxury, her dealings with the underground has left her thick-skinned and stubborn, refusing to back down from those who think themselves superior.
Likes: Luxury, selling dragon blood, feeling superior.
Dislikes: Magic, dragons (particularly Hotei), that volcano, being told what to do.
Abilities: Maleena strongly believes in the merit of one's own abilities, not trusting anyone who uses magic, even if she sells the ability to do so. However,though she doesn't realise, a necklace handed down to her, its pendant a vial that once held dragon's blood, is actually the real reason she has such accurate aim.
Strengths: Accurate with any ranged weapon though only knows how to use a crossbow, fairly handy with her fists or a decent knife too, persuasive and has plenty of contacts.
Weaknesses: Stubborn, determined to prove herself worthy, being caught face-to-face with any real melee weapon would probably prove fateful, proud, poor defense against magic.
