Oh goodness no you don't have to read everything! Most of it is just background and territory description on the second post of the main thread.
The only thing that needs to be read, in theory, to join are the roleplay rules, ranks (to see which to put on your form), and the code for your character
The basics are that they live in a wrecked ship on a peninsula and worship Arcadia, which is the land where their deceased ancestors go. Swashbuckler is the evil force behind Arcadia, like the Dark Forest.

if nobody ends up being interested in adopting Spirit, I might be willing to adopt her! She seems like the kind of character i can write, plus, nine characters would be 100% doable for me, especially since summer break is coming up real soon [like the start of the second week of May] and my work load is going down, which means longer/more frequent replies.

even though i said eight would be my last but this is special circumstance
but 10/10, 9 would be my permanent, definite cut-off haha ten is too much pour moi

There is three little paragraphs on the first page of the roleplay thread.
They are listed as follows: Roleplay Rules, Tribe Rules, and Surgeon Rules
The roleplay rules are the leftmost paragraph, and it has a code word within it to ensure that everyone reads the rules. If you can't find it I'll screenshot it later.
