Tally hated the cold. More than being cold, she hated being too cold. And that was what it was like that night.
She looked over her shoulder, a loose strand of hair swaying gently in the cold breeze. Aunt Orla was sitting around her outdoor wooden table with some of her adult friends, a feast laid out before them. But Tally wasn't hungry, and Tally didn't want to sit with those adults all evening, discussing politics and whatnot. She wanted to watch the sky.
Tallulah Gray was a queer girl. She was unlike most other girls her age. As she looked up at the dark sky, she blinked her wide peridot eyes. The sky was truly beautiful to her - more than beautiful, actually. It fascinated her. How the sun rose and fell, how the stars could still glint behind clouds. It was amazing how it was even a possibility - amazing how the world was. People often didn't appreciate how beautiful the world really was. Although, Tally had to admit, it had been much more beautiful many years ago. All the same, she often wondered how people couldn't understand, couldn't see how absolutely fantastic the world around them truly was. How it was possible that, without even putting effort into thinking, that humans could function - could move, could register things in their mind. It was because of her oddness and strangeness that Tally stood where she was standing right then. She wasn't like everybody else - she was different.
She continued walking, until she found the Tall Tree. Well, that's what she called it anyway. It wasn't because the tree was tall - though, it was the tallest one Tally had seen nearby since she'd moved in with Aunt Orla - but rather because it was the tallest tree there. The first thing she had done when she had arrived was explore, and the Tall Tree was the first thing she climbed. Orla was surprised at her adventurous streak - like her mother, Orla told her. That made Tally feel a little better about things. She had never known her mother, but hearing the occasional comment about her from Orla seemed to brighten her day. Tally could almost picture her mother just based on what she had heard.
Just like that first day two months ago, Tally reached up to the first appropriate area of the tree and pulled herself up. She climbed right up to the top of the tree effortlessly, like a monkey. Just as she perched herself on the highest branch, she beamed. She had about a split second before, at last, it began. She had been waiting for it for almost a month - but it had felt like a millennia to Tally.
A streak of glittering stardust trailed behind the first of the shooting stars. She let out a small gasp, her eyes widening even more than usual and hundreds of stars shot across the sky, imprinting their dust across the inky canvas, if only for a little while. Tally found herself laughing.
Make a wish, fool! her mind giggled at her.
She slowly stopped laughing. She was happy - but she hadn't always been. She appreciated what Orla had done for her, but.. at the same time, she felt as if she was a burden to the young woman.
I wish.. I wish I wasn't a burden. I wish I could run away all over again, become the adult I know that I'll someday be. I wish that I could be somebody different to the rest of the crowd, somebody that seems in their own league of difference. I wish.. I wish I was me, and nobody else.
Tallulah blinked. The stars had stopped streaking across the sky, and all seemed silent and dark. She steadily climbed down from her perch, landing lightly on her feet - that was, until she stumbled, and had to lean on the Tall Tree to regain her balance. She frowned, shaking her head - her mind was throbbing, and the pain was so terribly intense that Tallulah felt faint. She struggled across the grass, over towards Orla's house again. Not much further, she told herself, as she stepped up to the little white wash gate. Clutching the bar in her shaking hand, she pushed it open. She stepped forward, swaying, slowly beginning to lose her balance again. She swore under her breath, one hand still resting on the gate while another was reached up to her temples. Her eyes flickered towards the table of adults, her Aunt laughing at some joke. She must have shrieked from the pain, because suddenly all the unusual eyes were turned towards her. Some stood in surprise. Others blinked in confusion.
"Tally?" echoed a familiar voice. But that was all Tally's mind registered, and she stumbled to the ground, just barely caught by her Aunt's willowy, thin, shaking arms.

Alexis gently pushed her trolley along, having long said goodbye to her parents at the entrance to King's Cross. She stayed silent as she walked, the gentle squeak of her converse shoes rubbing against the tile floor drowned out by the chatter and general doings of the Muggles at the station. Her cat, Emerald, seemed insistent on being let out of her cage."Not yet, Em." Lexi murmured, continuing to walk through the station alone. When at last she arrived between Platforms nine and ten, she walked directly to the barrier, concealed by a crowd of Muggles. Sighing inwardly, Alex continued to push her trolley across the platform, the steam billowing around her as she approached the gleaming Hogwarts Express. Silently, she lifted her trunk by levitating it with her wand, and lifted Emerald's cage with her other free hand. She walked down the corridor, which was currently rather empty apart from a couple of Hufflepuff kids. Seeking a compartment, she poked her head into one. It was empty, as she had expected. She lifted her trunk up onto the rack overhead, and set Em's cage on the seat, allowing the cat to be free at last. She prowled at Lexi's feet, before perching herself on Alexis's lap. Stroking the cat fondly, Alex looked out the window, watching as more people came through the barrier and onto the platform.
Jenjo wrote:Nikki KingNikki blinked. The sun was high in the sky now, its strong rays flickering through the branches. She was sitting deep in one of the forests of District Seven, leaning back against a tree. Riley and Aaron were cracking nuts and eating them, but Nikki's appetite had long gone. She watched her brothers as they tossed the nuts into each other's mouths playfully, mirroring each other. This was her last Reaping. She just had to make it through this one, Nikki told herself. "Race you up the tree?" Riley smirked at his two siblings. Aaron was up on his feet. "C'mon, Nikki." he said with an encouraging smile. So, Nikki pulled herself up. They each took a tree of similar height, and when Aaron called 'go', the three began to scale the trees, like monkeys. All were equally fast, but Nikki triumphed. She managed a smile as she stuck her tongue out at her brothers, scrambling down the tree again. Her wild, wavy hair was in tangles now. The trio took the remains of their food, left the forest, and went home to their grandmother, who was waiting patiently for them. Each washed, then changed into their Reaping clothes - Aaron and Riley in similar brown suits and Nikki in a slightly-battered beige dress. "Ready." she murmured, walking with her family down the lanes of District Seven to the square. Although her brothers wouldn't be Reaped, it was still proper to wear considerable clothes, no matter what age you were. "Good luck." her grandmother, Anna, whispered to her as Nikki went for registration. "Thank you."
