I can go into more detail on mine, but (I think) the general answer is that they serve foreshadowing purposes. The events are happening at the same time as Estella/Akira are chatting and Rigel/Haruna are having their conversation.

Think of it as if youn have two towns about 30 minutes apart. The time is noon, and you are seeing events happening in both towns. Town A is the main action, town B is the side story. The sidestory gives you, the writer, a hint of what is going to happen.
