..nothing but a ghost of the previous sheriff’s transgressions; deserae a reverent that doesn’t know justice from vengeance. in
..another life, the white hat thinks he might have been something like her, hadn’t he decided to spare the man that had done in
..his father. the thought terrifies him. he can’t hate her, no matter how many times he lays bleeding in the sand.

..dreams, blurred as motion on film the moment he wakes. a man with soft features, asking him peculiar and nonsensical
..questions. it’s always the same dream, though sometimes, they seem older than they’re supposed to. isaiah learns to think
..nothing of it, they’re just nightmares, he reminds himself. they shouldn’t mean anything to him. he’ll learn soon enough that
..there are things he can’t run from, that meeting his maker might be a more regular occurrence than he imagines after all.
