Samuel was born in England to a poor family. His mother left soon after he was born to get away from their father, who drank a lot. When he was only four, and his sister was sixteen, she suddenly disappeared one day, and never returned. He left his house as soon as he possibly could, at eighteen, and bought his own place in Florida, and found work at a surf shop.

Personality

Sam is a amicable young man that is willing to risk a lot for those he cares about. He is a gentle person, unlike his father, and is sensitive to other people's feelings and needs.

Ekene is tough. Life has worn her down and made her bitter, and she is not sympathetic or overly kind. She is very guarded, and only allows close friends to see the events that made her change. Though she doesn't show it, she cares very deeply for her tribe, and would die for a fellow mermaid. She is proud to be a mermaid, and over the years, learned to hate humans for the horrors they've committed. Ekene is very fair (with matters not personal to her), and is good at keeping a calm head while negotiating. It takes a lot to break Ekene, but when she falls, she falls hard. Once she's upset, it is very hard to calm her down. She can get very angry, but only for a good reason.

Ekene is conceited about her voice. It is the one thing she brags about, and she often leads the tribe to sink ships purely to show her voice off. She sometimes bullies other mermaid's about their singing ability. Her voice is the one thing she feels confident about, and she cannot resist loving it and using it to put others down.

I'm really proud of her. My friend and I honest to god almost wrote a book about lowcountry mermaids who were all slaves who tried to escape through the marsh but instead turned into mermaids and lived in the creeks and had a blast.

If the reef tribe gets super full/popular, I'll make another coral reef tribe set off the coast of Turks and Caicos.
