history: life is seldom kind to orphans, and especially not to little
girls on the streets of the chicago slums. for as long as she's been
alive, she's known that she's nobody, nothing, too small and too
weak and not even plain enough to slip under the radar. it wasn't
a good thing, being a pretty slip of a girl with not a soul in the
world to look out for her. so she joined a gang, thought she'd found
a family, found people who had her back. sadly, expectations rarely
coincide with reality. the scraps she got into, she didn't mind (at
least not too much). it was everything else, everything she was
not allowed to refuse, and understood too late. unhappy people
were prone to doing vindictive things, and that's how she ended
up with her head held under the pond's surface one night, icy water
rushing into aching lungs with every gasp, every reflexive inhale as
she struggled against their grip. only, it didn't go quite to plan, for
both parties soon realized that she wasn't actually drowning,
though her lungs had long since filled with water. that was right
around about that time when the waters began churning, ghastly
wraiths and screaming phantoms rising from beneath the surface.
spooked, the gang members abandoned her and ran. avangeline
took this opportunity to slip away, coughing out water between
chattering teeth with every step, half-delirious and not wholly
convinced she wasn't dreaming. she's been running ever since,
not quite sure what happened that night, not knowing how she did
what she'd done, slowly coming to the realization that she wasn't
powerless after all (and that she did not know herself half as well
as she had thought she did).
once she'd come to terms with the fact that no, it hadn't been a
miracle or a fluke, that she was indeed different (inhuman), she
resolved to do something about it. she could only keep on running
for so long, (and she was so sick of being nobody, nothing).
seeking out the government was out of question, of course, but
there had been whispers on the streets, rumors of a rebellion
right under the government's noses. she'd been a gang member,
so being a rebel sounded just fine to her. there was one small
issue though: actually tracking them down. it's taken her almost a
year of following every hint, trading favors and bargains and
pieces of herself (that she really couldn't afford to lose) but
she thinks she's finally found the right place...
now all that's left to for her to do is to pray to deaf gods or
the cruel universe that something would finally go right, and
that all her efforts wouldn't be proven a waste.
