the arctic weather was known for its frigid temperatures and snow clad landscape.
eight dogs, trained in the ways of sledding were out and on a mission. their mush
er on a research escapade on the melting of the ice caps and the effect that it he
ld on the animals themselves. the dogs were well fed and taken care of for the m
ost part, doing their job without complain and enjoying the new area they were c
urrently located in. deep within the colder regions of alaska, they continued thei
r journey with little trouble. a few days in and this peaceful journey turned into t
hat of a nightmare. a blizzard struck them out of the blue and their trail was lost.
the dogs continued on, though little did they know they had left their musher beh
ind, the young man having lost his footing on the sled and tumbling down the slop
e. when the blizzard cleared, it was then that they noticed they were alone and w
ithout the man who had brought them here. not only this, they were now in prime
wolf country. home to the north american wolf, a subspecies of the gray wolf.

the land is covered in snow no matter the season. trees are sparsely covering the
land though they hold no leaves or substance. there a many water sources, some
of which are covered in small breakable ice. the prey consists of caribou, hares,
fish, seal pups if you are smart enough to catch one, musk ox, and any birds that
make their home here. some predators that pose a threat to the canines, wolves
included, are polar bears, grizzly bears, and orcas if in deep water and stranded.

it had been nearly a week since the incident and of course, they had all struggled. while they were not the well fed dogs they were a week ago, they had managed not to starve to death for now. the winds were cold and the landscape nothing but snow and the female was currently curled up with the rest of her former team, what was left of it anyway. so far there had been no sighting of the wolves that made this place their home but she knew they were still there, probably watching them. the team had come across one of their older kills and eaten what little was left on it, it was better than nothing in her mind. while use to the cold, she did still miss the warmth of the house and the general affections of the mushers she had.

mercury was pulled from her sleep when a small wind gust ruffled her thick coat. eyelids peeled open to show her bi-colored eyes. she squinted at first before she blinked away the sleep from her eyes. ears were slightly pinned as she uncurled herself from the ball she was in and then pushed herself up to her paws, her muscles were stiff from the cold and the lack of movement in her sleep. she yawned, exposing her yellowed canines before she dropped her two front legs down in a bow, stretching both her stiff legs and her back. she glanced around her for a moment, the dogs around her either still asleep or just waking like herself. shaking her coat out, she sniffed the air, wondering if they would be able to find anything to eat around here.

the agouti husky lapped up the snow and used that to quench her dry throat, while fresh water had been easy to come by, the snow also provided cold liquid to help. after all most places they had to break through a thin layer of ice just to get to it. she sighed, moving away from the group of dogs and looking down at the snow, wondering if there would be any tracks for her to follow that may lead her to food, of course she would have to share it, she was far from selfish in the matter of survival.

xxxxxxxas the sun appeared on this new day, they had once again survived a night without an attack. they were vulnerable like any other wild life that lived here, trying everyday to survive but the threat of death always lurking on their mind. without their human she felt less protected, but she still had her team surrounding her and she knew most of them had her back and the same for them as she had theirs. but a occurring dream kept disrupting her sleep, the blizzard that set them off course and the lose of their master. she kept thinking was there anything she could of done? anything she could of done to save the human that had taken care of them all these years. nova felt as if it was her fault, the horrible accident that happened before her eyes. however, she couldn't change the past and had to move on with the guilt.
xxxxxxxnova the young husky stretched her achy muscles, they were stiff from the position she was laying in but also was still hurting from the accident. she didn't think she had broken anything but maybe just pulled something. as she stretched the snow fell to the sides of her but also she pushed it out the way with her paws. with a yawn she slowly got up onto her all fours before shaking the rest of the snow off her pelt, she blended in well with the white snow due to her white fur. she was lucky to have white fur in this situation as it would be hard to see her within the snow so it increases her survival rate, but some of her team did stand out.
xxxxxxxthe snow fell from her pelt she looked around from where she was standing and saw mercury up but had wondered off away from the team. with a small huff, she nosed the snow before having a lick of the snow as it melted in her mouth. she didn't have a lot but enough to clench her thirst. with her ears perked she listened to her surroundings, she knew they were in dangerous territory since she could smell wolves that had walked through here but she wasn't sure how long that was. the female decided to sit and wait for the others to wake up to see where they were to go next.

august woke to the bitter wind stinging his nose. he snuffled and put his paw over it to try to ease the sting. after a few beats of attempting to fall back asleep, he opened his eyes. all that he saw was the endless white that coated everything he looked except for his team. his stomach dropped as he snapped out of that lulling post-dream haze and remembered what had happened about a week ago. his ears flattened to the sides of his head as he remembered the desperate search for their master. he still missed the human that had lovingly raised him since he was a pup, and the wound was still fresh in his mind.

he got up and stretched, uncharacteristically silent as he yawned and shook the snow off of his pelt. a chill ran down august's spine as the young husky came out into the daylight, the wind howling as it passed by. his muscles twanged with pain as he walked out onto the frozen plateau, reminding him of the accident. august wondered if they would ever see anyone else again as despair came over him. he sat down suddenly, squinting against the sun to try and see if there were any landmarks on the horizon. all that he could see however, was white upon white. he could faintly smell the scent of wolves, although it seemed like they'd passed through a while ago. august still shivered and glanced around nervously, as he knew they were in dangerous territory.

he spotted mercury not too far off, and august wondered what she was doing. he curled his tail over his paws as he saw nova, her white pelt disguising her within the snow. he looked back at the rest of his team, still sleeping, and decided to walk a bit to see if he could see anything.
