loners and rogues that journey the world share stories of cats who follow the stars, each believing their ideals righteous and their group most important. no two clans are truly the same, the travellers joke to each other.

in a far off grove twolegs have begun construction, building out their cities and chasing away the wildlife. no longer able to hunt and with their sacred stone destroyed the clan leaves. adaptable and quick thinking they still struggle to survive the perils of journeying, turning once again to the stars in desperation for answers.

secluded in an old untouched forest reside another group of cats. they see the stars in everything: the blood of
their leader, the formation of clouds and the rustling leaves. tradition is everything to them, signs and omens guiding their life in many ways. they are always looking and listening for the stars.

we begin at camp in leafbare just before dawn is about to break. the deputy, sleetwhisker, succumbed to an infected wound the previous day after a long fight with fever. the clan has been restless and saddened, awaiting moonhigh for a successor to be named. harrierstar, mourning the loss of her trusted deputy left camp to clear her head and deliberate on her choice. moonhigh came and went without an announcement and worried, a patrol consisting of [names] left to find harrierstar. they have just returned carrying the body of their leader.

in the midst of a chilly leafbare when prey was scarce and the frosts stunted the forest growth smokefur gave birth to her first and only litter: bearkit, elkkit and wolfkit. she never named the father of the kits to the clan but the deep brown pelts of bearkit and elkkit showed an uncanny resemblance to a fellow warrior mudstripe. however they were raised alone by smokefur and the two never acted as mates. as kits the three brothers were inseparable.
the three were later apprenticed to senior members of duskclan and were excited to start their journey to warriorship together. however the happy times were shortlived when in a particularly violent border dispute with dawnclan, wolfpaw was murdered by a young and cocky enemy warrior. their grief over losing a sibling drove a wedge between the two remaining brothers choosing to cope in opposite fashion. bearpaw, vowing to never let himself be overpowered like wolfpaw was, threw himself into warrior training. however elkpaw could not do the same, becoming imbittered with the lifestyle he had idolised since kithood. instead he sheathed his claws for good to train under redberry as the next medicine cat of duskclan.
bearpaw was the first to recieve his title and rank, become bearfang - a young warrior respected for his strength in battle. bearfang made it a point to rub it in to elkpaw, jeering about how the other chose a soft and weak life. 'better than being a fool that is nothing without his claws,' elkpaw would often snap back. their relationship was a far cry from the closeknit bond they once had by the time elkpaw earned his medicine cat name, elkwhisker.
many seasons passed and redberry retired, leaving elkwhisker as the solitary medicine cat driving him closer to the leader of the clan, oakstar. he had suggested that elkwhisker was due to take an apprentice and with the recent arrival of a litter in the clan was to take one under his wing at 6 moons. so as redberry had to him, elkwhisker taught toadpaw everything he had learnt and in seasons he had earned his full title of toadnose. while elkwhisker was assertive yet prickly, often challenging the ideas of the leader, toadnose was meek - a quality that gave him an excellent bedside manner but made him somewhat conflict avoidant.
six moons ago was when the unimaginable happened, oakstar lost his last life and the steadfast deputy stormclaw was the new clan leader. many were pleased to see him rise to power but only a few were aware of his true intentions [bearfang among them], most were simply hoping for a firmer presence at gatherings. elkwhisker accompanied stormclaw to the moontree where he gained his nine lives. with his rise came harsh changes, the clan no longer had a duty of care to the young and vulnerable adopting rogue like values of every cat for themself. enraged by the abandonment of the code elkwhisker confronted him as he would've under oakstar and was left shocked with a bloodied ear and stripped of his title. fearful of persecution and worried for the other cats in his clan toadnose turned his back on elkwhisker.
shunned from his clan and without a title elkwhisker spends his time helping the queens hunt and ignoring the sharp remarks from stormstars loyal subjects. too stubborn to be a warrior and too proud to be an elder, he felt lost without his role and was relieved when starclan whispered the prophecy in his ear.

these cats were born and raised in dawnclan from before stormstar attacked and overpowered the clan. those who didnt flee or perish in the battle now live under his reign, with those refusing to comply being killed. cats trained in running the moors and fishing in streams must now scale trees and rocky mountain cliffs with those who have done so their whole lives effectively or be branded as weak.

mothdapple was born as a kittypet under named bella to a handsome pair of bengal cats: charlotte and theodore. she did not struggle in her adolescence, following in the pawsteps of her parent's and being given to a new family of twolegs to live the comfortable life of a house pet. she enjoyed her new home and befriended the neighbouring cat, opal, who reminded her of her mother. opal was wise, patient to her endless amount of chatter and she was expecting kittens of her own. bella would help opal to rest by look out for the kits when she needed a break, becoming an older sister to them. when the kits were grown enough they were given new homes. it was a quiet life and it was all she had ever known. had she been one who explored maybe she would've noticed the sudden emptying of homes. it was opal and her family moving away that opened her eyes to how much things had changed in her neighbourhood. her twolegs did not stick around either leaving the house cold and empty. bella waited and waited, expecting her owners to return and collect her but they never did. distraught by the bitter sting of rejection bella did something she had never dreamed of: she left for good.

bella found out quickly that the world beyond the gardens she was accustomed to was harsh, loud and unbearable. rats scuttled in alleyways, foxes lurked in the streets at night and the scraps she had been forced to scavenge were few and far between. attempts at hunting had been fruitless, even the most distracted pigeons seemed to notice her a fox length away. the lack of food and rest had made her feel weaker and she decided to flee all together hoping her hunting would be better in the grove. her hunting did not improve and bella was weaker than she could have ever predicted. questioning herself on where she had gone wrong, taking a needed rest by the roots of a tree a mistclan patrol found her. at first furious that there was an intruder on their hunting grounds the cats began to interrogate her but at second glance they halted. once sleek shiny fur was now dull, ribs visible and bella; who had prided herself on being elegant; was now dishevelled. the hostility sputtered out into pity and she was taken to camp, to inform their leader and apparently to meet a cat who would examine her? she was anxious but had little option but to comply.

bella could count the number of cats she had known in life on one paw and the sheer amount of cats was overwhelming. after being checked over she was permitted to stay by [name]star and was treated in the medicine den. during her time slowly recovering bella learned about clan life, the code and so much more then she ever knew existed - according to her companions in the medicine den the stars were full of once deceased cats? she was doubtful but having the community feel was soothing. while recovering she tried to make herself useful around the camp despite [name] forbidding her from overexertion. bella found herself being drawn into the nursery, caring for the kittens and allowing the burned out queens some time to themselves. healthy once again she asked to stay and learn to hunt so she could properly take care of herself in the wild to which they agreed under the assumption she was to leave soon after. many cats found her lack of skill embarrassing ["imagine being out paced by a kit fresh out of the nursery"] but the she-cat never really cared, it was impossible to know what hadn't been taught to her.

during her time while training to hunt disaster befell the clan with the loss of a queen. initial grief descended into panic with a litter now left motherless - the remaining queens too stressed to care for extra kittens and bella stepped in agreeing to raise them as her own. it was an opportunity to truly repay the cats for their generosity, continuing her training in the little free time she had. by the time they were ready to be apprenticed it was clear there was an unspoken agreement between herself and the leader, bella had truly become a part of the clan during the moons spent in the nursery. when her litter were apprenticed she was nothing but proud of them but before dismissing the clan the leader called their attention once more.

"bella - step forward."

she did, nervous for what [name]star had prepared for her. "spirits of starclan, you know every cat by name. i ask you now to take away the name from the cat you see before you, for she has left behind her kittypet life in favour of serving our clan. by my authority as clan leader, and with the approval of our warrior ancestors, i give this cat a new name. from this moment on, she will be known as mothdapple. we honour her compassion and drive to improve." mothdapple, she thought to herself purring. although she had likely never chosen to leave her kittypet life out of her own volition she had never been more glad to be a clan cat.
