The Wise
Tenzin
(Resin)
Gender: Male
Age: Middle aged
Species: Liger
Dwelling: Grand Library
Personality and History: Tenzin remembers little of his imprisonment within the zoo. He suspects that he's tried to block it out. What he does remember is that he was born to a golden tigress and was later sold as a pet. His new owner wasn't very creative and gave him the name Goldie. When both he and his appetite grew, the human soon realized that they could not care for a Liger. Soon Goldie found himself in a circus where he was soon deemed unfit for show. Later he was given to a private collector. When the old man died, the Liger was finally placed within a city zoo.
The facility was large, but not large enough for the tastes of the animals within. On more than one occasion Goldie or "Golden Boy" as they called him, attempted to escape. Though he was fed regularly and had a lioness to keep him company, a part of him always ached for freedom. He yearned to taste the outside world. He wished with all of his being that he could see the world without bars obstructing his view. He wished to walk from the deep stone basin that was his prison and never look back.
It was a typical day. Goldie had been sprawled atop a strategically placed viewing boulder, ignoring the crowd that gawked at him when a loud boom shook the earth. Soon the humans were coughing and gasping. Then they began falling like flies. One kind soul saw fit to hit the emergency door release buttons, allowing the big cats their freedom.
There was little bickering. Everyone was ecstatic at the idea of freedom. Once they found their way from the building, they all stopped in their tracks. All of the humans were dead. The ground was littered with them. An unearthly silence took hold of the land. Without the drone of humans, the world seemed too quiet.
Other animals had been released as well, it seemed, for they roamed about the grounds. The animals meandered about for days until they gradually made their way into the outside world. With each step he took, Goldie's giant paws stirred up clouds of odd smelling dust.
The animals stuck together; something that normally would not happen in the wild. They began signaling one another, pointing out this and that. Soon the began to speak to one another aloud. Each beast was surprised when the first of them, a female grey wolf, opened her maw and produced words. They all tried and found that they were capable of the same.
Over time, Goldie developed a fondness for this female wolf. They became a team of sorts. Soon their intelligence rivaled that of humans. As their minds grew, a council was held. The decision was unanimous. Goldie and his wolfen counterpart would be the leaders of The Wise, which they were now calling themselves. They took up residence in the Grand Library and have lived within ever since, expanding their minds with the aid of the books within. One book spoke of a man called the Dali Lama and Goldie took the name Tenzin, naming himself after the last Dali Lama that lived.
((^To clear things up, these two are not in a relationship. They're best friends/co-leaders and hold one another in the highest regard.v))Oresia/Ora
(Resin)

Gender: Female
Age: Middle aged
Species: Cascades Wolf
Dwelling: The Grand Library with Tenzin
Personality and History: Oresia only rarely speaks of her past. Her 'simple years' are behind her and that's where she would like to leave them. She was not, however, bred in captivity. She had been a wild wolf living in the Cascades. She has never forgiven the humans for stealing her from her home.
Once she gained the newfound intelligence that they had all been given, she was the first to speak. This attracted the attention of the liger, Tenzin and the pair have been together ever since. Those that have become close to her are able to call her Ora. Others are to address her by her full name. She's a firey female with a bit of a temper, but it's never shown unjustly.
She lives in the Grand Library with Tenzin, her constant companion. There they spend the majority of their time reading books and learning as much as possible. Occasionally they have visitors asking to borrow said books which she doesn't mind as long as they're returned. Because of this, she is sometimes called
Oresia the Librarian or just
The Librarian. She doesn't mind this title one bit.
Though every beast is their own, she and Tenzin are the leaders of the group. They try to be fair and just, giving every beast a chance to be heard. They will, however, mete out justice swiftly and unmercifully when needed. The rules were made for a reason and they expect them to be followed.
Name of character: Calaphan
(Soriams)

Gender: Male Age: Getting OldSpecies: Corvus corax, Common RavenDwelling: The largest tree of New Isolia's City Park.A massive oak, it is one of the greatest surviving human cultivated plants in the city, and it has been a regular roost for him even in the time before the humans were lost. Yet, he has no true ties to the place and his wings take him wherever his whims drive him.
Personality and History:Calaphan is, and always has been a bit on the outside of the others. Though he had been a frequest visitor to the zoo where many of the other animals were kept, he was a wild bird, and free to come and go as he pleased. This perhaps, brought him a bit of resentment from the others who remembered his visits from their simpler years, and it was a long time before he spoke to anyone. As a raven, his intelligence was already rivaled the humans whose city he lived in, and he knew much of their ways and speech long before the awakening. It often seems that he knows more than he lets on, and there is something uncanny about him. His keen black eyes and unreadable features holding a stillness and wisdom that no longer seem to belong in this world.
For years, he kept vigil over the others as they discovered themselves, and it was only by chance that he met Oresia and Tenzin whilst they shared a meal. As had been the way of ravens for all times, he flew down to join them, brazenly taking his small portion of their kill while they ate. Of course, they ignored the bird as most predators would, and he managed to listen in on their shared conversation. The great liger quoted something they had read, and to this day, his words still cary great weight with the raven. Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them. Nodding, the wolf replied once more with a quote, I find hope in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe. Their words impressed him it seemed, and the great bird spoke to them for the first time, We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace within ourselves. his words eerily similar to those of the human they now discussed.
Ravens had long held close a practice of nonviolence, they never took life nor feared death. Truly, death had always been their companion, and they thrived in the deepest winters when life was most difficult for others. His quote had been an old Raven proverb, and it was with much curiosity that he questioned the liger and his canine companion on the works of this human scholar. Calaphan still frequents the library, tapping on the upper windows to be let in and continue their studies.
Merikh which means Death, Destruction, Slaughter
(Resin)
Gender: Male
Age: Old
Species: Saltwater Crocodile
Dwelling:The large pond in New Isolia Park.
Personality and History: Merikh spent the majority of his life in the Phillipines where he was king of a vast expanse of swampy marshlands. Measuring in at over twenty feet long, he drew a lot of attention from both the inhabitants of Bunawan and the tourists that came through. For the most part, he ignored the attention, going about his business. He kept himself busy protecting his females and his territory from invading males.
His immense size and threatening stature made protecting his land very easy. It was rare that he was challenged. He ate first, he mated with every female that he wished, he helped bring tons of little marsh kings into the world. Life was perfect.
One day, as Merikh was basking upon a sunny bank, nets and ropes were thrown about him. No matter how many times he death rolled, he was unable to break free. Shortly after, he was loaded onto a cart and taken to a small concrete pond, barely big enough for him to turn around in. There he stayed for years. People came to look at him daily, sometimes throwing things at him to get his attention. That's where his hatred towards humans began.
The day came when the nets and ropes were thrown around him again. This time he managed to kill one of them. Merikh was put on a cart once more, then loaded into a plane. Hours later he landed in the United States and was transported to the New Isolia zoo where he killed a second human.
Rather than euthanize him, his grizzly past brought him fame, thus bringing the zoo fame. He was well taken care of, but his distrust for humans made him dangerous. He was in a small, holding cell when the illness struck the humans. The emergency release button was hit and he wandered free, finally finding his way to the New Isolia park and it's lovely, massive pond.
Whereas most of the newly enhanced animals have chosen to forget their pasts, Merikh clings tightly to his. He has never felt simple as the others have. Merikh is quite proud of his heritage and can be rather cocky and pompous at times. He sees himself as better than most. He does, however, hold respect for Oresia. The fact that the female speaks her mind and rarely holds back places her on the same level as the humongous reptilian.
Name of character:Mavric
(Mavric)
Image:
Gender: Female
Age: early twenties(if in human years)
Species: wolf; with a minimal trace of dog. Technically called a wolf-dog, but she much prefers to simply be referred to as wolf.
Dwelling:A small hut near the river, far from most others, close to nature
Personality and History:Mavric was always quite odd for both sides of her genome, wolf and dog. She avoided others due to her consistent fear of being hurt. She was always quite simple minded, and didn't really care for humans ever, especially not the human who kept her. The woman was a dirty blond, and that was not the only dirty thing about her. Her 'dirt' seemed to penetrate down into her soul, if she had one that is. Mavric knew for certain that this woman had no heart, that was easy to see. The woman had a daughter, a 16 year old red headed, green eyed girl who was also very solitary due to the fact that she was consistently abused both physically and verbally by her mother. Mavric and the girl had created a bond, two outcasts, one friendship.
The day that the death came started normal for her, avoid being seen by the evil woman, and comfort the poor battered girl. She snarled loudly as the evil one came close to once again harm the girl, the woman stopped and spit something at her in her human language, which only egged her on more. She blocked the path between the woman and girl her head low, begging the woman to take a step so that she could attack her. Then oddly this powder started to fall from somewhere she could not see. The woman gasped and fell to the ground, as the girl shot into the upside-down fruit crate that acted as Mavric's shelter. Mavric followed the girl inside whom was coughing and holding an old rag to her face. The girl knew that death would also come for her as it did her mother, so she said softly to Mavric, whom for the first time understood human babble "I love you Mavric, thank you for being my guardian angel" Mavric whimpered softly and shocked herself by also speaking the babble "I love you too little one, may you find peace." Though this was so outlandishly strange, the girl only smiled, and buried her face in the wolf's thick fur and faded away.
Mavric buried the girl, under the willow tree that they had hidden under so often, and found a good sized stone to mark the young ones grave. As for the woman, she allowed the woman's body rot out in the open, being defiled by flies and other vermin. Mavric stood by the fence that had for as long as she could remember, been a border for her world. With her new found knowledge she wanted to explore, find a den maybe that suited her more than the box that had been her den. With one large leap she cleared the old rusty fence and leaped directly into her new life, as a free creature.
Mavric was free, she raced down the empty street enjoying her solitude, and howled for all the world to hear that freedom was hers. She continued to travel from one place to the next hunting when hungry, sleeping when tired, and moving on when not. She was happy for the longest time until she found herself lonely, she longed for the red headed girl again, to play and cry with each other.
Finally Mavric found the perfect place for her. It was an old cottage that lay by a wide and slow moving river with much life all around her. It lay on the outskirts of a large city that she never really bothered herself to venture into. She was content, still lonely, but still content.
Name: Mabaya ('Evil' in Swahili)
(Fearless.Leo)
Gender:Female
Age:The equivalent of 19 in human years, so a young adult.
Species:Margay
Dwelling:Mabaya chose to live in the botanical conservatory. There are many trees, which makes her happy. One of the 3 large domes was smashed, which leads outside to more trees. Her nest is in the dome furthest from the smashed one, nestled in a 'v' of a large tree.
Personality:Mabaya lives up to her name in some aspects, which is why she chose to adopt it and keep it. She is used to being solitary, and thus isn't good at interacting with others. She speaks and acts before she thinks, which makes her come off as rude and rough. It can also cause issues, which can range from dangerous to just annoying. She does care more for herself than anything, but she is willing to help others at times.
She is quiet and doesn't like talking to others, making her seem cold. She rarely shows emotion, and much prefers to keep to herself. Anger seems to be her most normal emotion. Her rashness makes her seem less intelligent than others at times, but she is still decently smart. She has read a few books that she found in the conservatory, though they weren't very interesting to her.
History:Originally, Mabaya had been a wild, nameless margay. She lived in the cloud forests of South America, spending most of her life in the vast treetops. She easily moved through the large, dense wilderness, and was more than happy to spend her time alone. She hunted for herself and took care of herself, and she was happy. Everything changed, however, and far too soon for her liking.
A storm rolled through her home. It wasn't horrid, but the winds were enough to make the edges of things fuzzy. Though she has good eyesight, she wasn't able to see the trap before her. It was a simple snare, which lifted her into the air by her back feet. She was soon retrieved by a group of men and taken to the United States.
She was sold to a rich man, who kept her in a small cage in his basement with many other animals. The person that dropped him off spoke mostly Swahili. Mabaya attacked him, hoping for freedom, but it didn't work. The man yelled at his master that she was 'evil', thus giving her her name. She was only there a week before the man was arrested for one reason or another. This landed her in the zoo, where she lived for 3 months before everything changed again.
Looks:Mabaya is rather average in terms of appearance, except for her back legs. Because of the snare, there are stripes of oddly patched fur around the lower parts of her back legs. The skin there is disfigured, but it isn't that noticeable unless her fur is wet.
Name: Varg ('Wolf' in German)
(Fearless.Leo)
Gender:Male
Age:The equivalent of 21 in human years, so young adult.
Species:Maned Wolf
Dwelling:Varg chooses to live in an apartment building. It's only three stories tall, and he has claimed the top floor to himself. One large apartment has a nice bed that he's made his bed in.
Personality:Varg is a rather sweet fellow, sort of a mixture of a nerd and a jock. He loves anything that's athletic, including running, jumping, and swimming. He has issues sitting still for too long, and he seems to have infinite energy. His constant motion can be annoying to others, but it does have good benefits at times.
Since he has gained his intelligence, Varg has been an avid reader. He doesn't have a photographic memory, but he does have a knack for remembering many things. He is only calm while reading and sometimes sleeping, so he can be much more placid while involved in a book.
Because he is used to a more 'pack' life, Varg is very used to being around others. He actually prefers this, and thus often talks to others. He is rather chatty, and is more than willing to help others out of a sticky situation. He can be emotionally damaged easily, though he tries to hide it.
History:Varg's history is rather bland. He was born in the zoo, as were his parents. His mother's parents and father's mother were all born in the zoo as well. Thus, his wild streak was inherited from his father's father. He was captured directly from South America and transferred. Nothing large ever happened in his exhibit, seeing as how his family was rather small. After they broke out, however, he decided to go off on his own. He stayed nearby, but his family set off and left, never to return.
Varg was born nameless as well, his mother only calling him 'pup'. A young girl that visited the zoo once called him Varg and he stuck.
Looks:Varg has no real defining features. His fur was always a bit brighter, or at least he thought so.
Illusion
(Apocalyptic_Punk)
Image:

Gender: Female
Age: middle aged.
Species:Ocelot
Dwelling: A small house.
Personality and History: Illusion is a pretty secretive fae, she tends to keep to herself, but will speak to other's and interact with them if she is approached. She is a very laid back and pretty calm female. She rarely if ever holds grudges, and has a deep understanding of life and spiritual things. She has a deeper connection to the spirit world then others (no Magic, just a deep understanding and respect, IE: She prays to the ancestors and such) Illusion like her species is pretty secretive, but like the others around her, she was raised in one of those glass cages, but unlike her more brazian kin, she was rarely seen. When the humans all died she slipped her cage and found her way in this new world.
Nos
(Apocalyptic_Punk)
Image:

Gender: Male
Age: Young
Species: King Cheetah
Dwelling: A dilapidated old apartment building,
Personality and History: If there was one word that could be used to describe Nos it would be
FAST. He talks fast, moves fast he does everything at a rate of speed that would make most others around him dizzy. He has an inability to sit still for long. But that is generally in new circumstances, he is young and with the right amount of patience can eventually settle and sit and listen. Though he still will respond to questions at the speed of light, he tends to not know how to moderate his speech. He though is not unintelligent, he actually has a pretty good head on his shoulders. He lived with a human sense he was just a few weeks old, never having a cage, he was used to being walked on a leash, of all the other animals he actually misses his human, who was very kind to him, and never mistreated him.
Hapi.
(Wormgod)
He named himself after Hapi, the hamadryas baboon headed son of Horus who guarded the lungs of the deceased, and was sculpted on the ceramic jars used to hold the dead's lungs.
Gender: Male.
Age: Young adult, about 25 for humans.
Species: Hamadryas baboon. Also known as dog-faced baboon, sacred baboon, or as Hapi calls himself,
Papio hamadryas.
Dwelling: The Grand Library, where The Wise live.
Personality and History: Hapi was once a simple, unnamed male borned and raised in this cities zoo. He never knew a life in the wild, and in his "simple years"--as he calls the time before the humans died and he was inexplicably gifted with sentience--did not want to. He was not the leader of the troop, but he was good friends with him, and lived a relatively nice life as one of the higher-ups in the group. Of course, he could not mate with any of the females, and he would never be able to, but in that time he was perfectly okay with that. Still, he yearned for more freedom, and a new troop, with a mate (or mates) of his own. But, that all changed when he became an adult, and the plague hit the humans.
The zookeepers were late that day, and forgot to feed the troop. They were angry, and the leader stirred up all the other primate species in that section of the zoo. Then the head zookeeper guy came in coughing up fluids. He hit the emergency release button, and all the doors in the zoo opened at once. For a moment, no one moved. Then the zookeeper started shouting, and the animals rushed for freedom. Hapi ran with his mother, but in the chaos he lost track of her, and the rest of his troop.
He soon found himself lost among the strange human habitats. He walked for weeks, learning which marked buildings held food, which held water, and which held the dead humans. He scavenged around this new territory and left scent marks in case his old troop came by. Soon he realized he was recognizing the symbols, and forming a mental map of the territory. It was like a fog was lifted from his mind! He collected as much of the symbol-marked thing as he could and stuffed them in a human skin-sack--called a "leather purse"--and wrapped the strap around his torso. He studied them as much as he could. His favorite was a symbol-thing full of sheets covered in pictures and symbols--a "book"--on a place called "Ancient Egypt." This placed loved his species, he read. They had many hamadryas gods--Hapi, Babi, and Astennu--that were worshipped. His kind didn't even live near Egypt, but far south, and they still loved them! He identified with Hapi, and soon took that name.
Three weeks into his trek, and the newly christened Hapi found a building full of books. There lived two other animals, also sentient. They called themselves "The Wise", and taught Hapi how to speak. They asked him to join, and although the decision was hard, he agreed. By living in the library, he had access to more books than he could ask for, and he had two new troop-members. Life was, once again, good.
Name of character: Thayer(Slayei)
Gender: Female
Age: Early Twenties
Species: Himalayan Wolf
Dwelling: Thayer lives in the old opera house that stands in the corner of the area. It is very spacious and lively, always seeming to keep her entertained.
Personality and History: Thayer was raised on an animal reserve where she ran wild, but there was always fences. She stalked the edges of the reserve for years, always trying to find a way out into the world, but never quite getting there. When the world began to go downhill, so did the reserve. The park rangers stopped showing up, food bowls were left empty, water reserves dried up and…the fence began to rust. With the encouragement of no food, she finally broke free from the reserve. She traveled for miles until she finally settled in the place she is now.
Thayer is quite a direct personality and if not taken lightly she can come off hurtful. She has a serious slyness about her that makes her unmatched when it comes to figuring out difficult situations. She is accepting of new opportunities and advances when they come her way, enjoying to learn new things. When given a task she learns quickly and can adjust to a situation no matter the cost. She does not be friend easily, however. She prefers to stick to herself, so as to not have to let anyone else in.
Asali (LittleStarWolf)
Means 'Honey' in Swahili.
Named because of the light cream color of her fur and her taste for honey.
GenderFemale
AgeYoung Adult
SpeciesFennec Fox
DwellingOpera House
PersonalitySweet, playful, silly. Very playful. Loves to go about making little mischievous. Mostly she just likes bothering the others to see what they are up too. O and she really likes honey, pastries, anything sweet tasting. Most of the time, you can find her in the Opera House, exploring its many rooms.
HistoryWas born in the wild in South Africa, but her family was killed by hunters, leaving her abandon as a pup. She doesn't really remember this though so she holds no grudges against the humans, because all her memories are of her with a human mother, feeding her with a bottle and playing with her as a pup till she got older and they placed her in the zoo, but she hadn't been in the zoo long as she is barely old enough to mate. When the change came and freedom was upon her at the zoo, Asali really didn't know what to do about it. She liked the idea of roaming free, but was a little scared of it at first. Lucky for her, she has a big case of curiosity and soon was exploring everything.
Name of character: Musaleh (Max) (Soriams)

Gender: Male Age: Middle AgedSpecies: Canis lupus familiaris, Longdog (Greyhound x Wolfhound)Dwelling: Suburban MansionHe lives with his new master, Joost.
Personality and History:In his former life, Musaleh was a coyote dog. His master had trained him and his siblings to hunt and kill the wily canines for sport. Possessing the size of a wolfhound and the speed of a greyhound, he excelled at this task and soon became a favorite of his humans, and was brought in as a pet. Inevitably though, disaster struck and they were killed by the mysterious powder that fell from the sky. Stricken, he stayed with them as along as he could, but soon hunger drove him from the house.
Already a skilled hunter Musaleh had no problems filling his belly once he was free. Thus he lived until the intelligence began to creep into him. It was a strange thing, to suddenly have understanding, and the use of words as his humans had used all his life. Looking back, he was suddenly able to comprehend the things they had said around him, and with it, awe poured into him. Had they known this secret all along? What wonders they must have created with this keenness of mind that they all now shared. He literally devoured all the information he could find about humans, the way they thought and the things they wrote about, and became convinced that they were everything he had thought and more. In this way, he mourned their passing, and vowed to keep their memory alive.
Continuing his travels, Musaleh discovered that many of the other animals around him could speak as well. Needless to say, he never killed another coyote after that. There was simply something wrong with killing another intelligent being. For a while, he tried to teach the others, the wild beasts that now wandered the city, but many of them would not listen. They had been ill-treated by their masters, and could not understand the dog's affection. And though the soft spoken and respectful canine made many friends among the creatures he met, none of them truly understood him.
One day, Musaleh encountered something he had never expected to see. There, plain as day was a human, trying desperately to break into a building. Overjoyed, he almost called out to him, wanting to speak, but silenced his voice before uttering a word. Who was he, to expect to speak with a human on their level? He was still nothing more than a dog, and this, whoever this human was, was his master. Remembering what he was meant to be, Musaleh did his best to act like nothing more than the happy animal he used to be, and approached the human. Much to his delight, the man accepted him and he now had what he had longed for: a new master and a friend.
The human, a man named Joost, brought Musaleh in and has kept him well. Though he does seem to have some sort of issue with his name, and insists on calling him Max. For Musaleh, that is nothing more than a minor curiosity, and he loves him just the same. As of late though, he has overheard some unsettling things while at his master's side. Joost doesn't seem to understand the creatures around him, and has been increasing his hostilities towards all non-humans. This saddens Musaleh, as he had hoped to at one time share his thoughts with his new master, and now fears that he would never be accepted on the same level. For now, he keeps his silence while in Joost's presence, and hopes for a time when they will all find peace.
Name of character: Keres (Soriams)

Gender: Female Age: Middle AgedSpecies: Crocuta crocuta, Spotted HyenaDwelling: New Isolia Public Works BuildingA great squat building of stone and iron, it is full of long halls and a maze of cubicles and other offices. The dark and twisting place suits Keres' personality to a tea, and she is seldom seen outside in the daylight.
Personality and History:Keres was a relative newcomer to New Isolia's zoo when the plague struck, only having been in captivity for about a year. Before that, she had ruled over her clan in sub saharan Africa a lone matriarch, she stayed strong for them though it was a lonely and difficult life. However, due to humans preference for great cats, she and her clan were forcibly removed from their lands to make more room for lions. They were captured, and her family was scattered to the four winds, never to be seen from again. Horribly depressed and defeated, Keres was placed in the zoo with the existing hyenas.
Unable to really connect with them, and continually at odds with the resident princess, Keres found herself drawn to a young female called Ayanna. Sweet and gentle, she had been born in captivity and had lived among them all her life. The two found a sort of kinship in one another and for the first time in her life, Keres had not just a subject, but a friend.
When they were set free, Keres and Ayanna went their own way from the other hyenas they had shared the pen with. Enjoying their newfound freedom, Keres taught her captive friend what it meant to hunt and be free, to be the master of ones own destiny. As their intelligence grew, so too did they draw closer to one another, until friendship blossomed into something much deeper. Eventually, the two thought of one another as mates, and happy in their newfound love they made their home together.
One day while out hunting, the two stumbled upon something neither of them ever expected to see again: a human. Ayanna was intrigued, as the two of them had long been talking about the humans she knew when she was a pup, and wondered if she could now speak with them. Despite Keres misgivings, she was determined to go and speak with him. At first, it seemed as if the human understood her words, but suddenly, things went horribly wrong, and he killed her in cold blood.
Devastated, Keres mourned for days over Ayanna, feeling as though she had lost everything that was light in her life. The senseless and unprovoked killing immediately renewed her old hatred and mistrust for the two-legged monsters, and Keres soon became one of the most vocal animals to speak out against them. Wallowing in her despair and loathing, she is a very angry hyena, and seldom visits the WIse or any of the others. Somewhere deep inside, she knows that she must find a way to move on, but the weight of life is too great for her to lift it on her own.

The Humans
Dahlia/Doll
(Resin)
Gender: FemaleAge: 27 years oldSpecies:HumanDwelling: The apartment where she lived with her family. The building is two blocks away from the library and one block from the park.Personality and History: Dahlia, Doll to her friends, was back home and living with her parents when the illness struck. She had been attending college in another state and had almost received her degree in English. Dahlia had been on break and had returned home to visit her parents. Her flight had been long and she'd decided to sleep in the next day.
When she woke, she went into the living room to find her parents and there they sat, in their chairs in the living room. Dahlia said hello, went to the kitchen, poured a bowl of cereal, then went and sat on the couch. It was only after she took her first bite that she realized something was wrong.
She grieved for days, not eating or bathing. She didn't even venture out of the house for a week. The smell is what finally prompted her into action. She had to bury her parents. She chose the park as their final resting place.
The next few months were spent collecting the things that she would need to survive. She collected food, water, weapons. Dahlia went through the entire apartment building, ridding it of dead bodies, though she couldn't bury them all. Instead she piled them outside and burned them.
The animals had been there from the first day. She assumed that someone had let them out of the zoo. Not once did she threaten them and not once did they threaten her. The only one that frightened her was the giant crocodile that made it's home in the pond at the park. She saw him every time she went to visit her family.
In time she and the animals became comfortable seeing one another. And then they began to speak. Dahlia was taken aback when the liger spoke to her. She was convinced that she'd dreamed the whole thing. After they had a lengthy conversation, she accepted things as they were.
From that day on, she had a decent relationship with all of the beasts that now lived in the city. They helped her collect the dead and she burned them until the whole of New Isolia was cleared of corpses. She comes and goes as she pleases and is rather happy in her new life. She converses regularly with The Wise and is generally accepted among them.Name of character: Josephus Smith (Joost) (Soriams)

Gender: Male Age: 35Species: Homo sapiens, HumanDwelling: Suburban MansionThis place once belonged to a very rich family, now, its luxuries are worthless, and Joost has made it his home. The many rooms affording plenty of space for any humans wishing to take shelter.
Personality and History:Before the plague hit, Josephus was just your normal, run-of-the-mill guy. He had a crappy job as a sergeant for the New Isolia Police Department, as well as a wife and two kids. However, as soon as the sickness came, he lost all of that. They all died in front of him, and there was nothing, absolutely nothing, he could do. While he was one of the few lucky ones to be immune to the deadly powder, he really didn't feel so blessed. He carries a tremendous amount of guilt with him, as though there was something he could have done to save someone, even just one person.
Stepping out into the empty world, Joost's grief soon turned to hunger and desperation. He raided what places he could find and gathered food, soon migrating to the richest part of town hoping that they would have greater stockpiles. As he wandered the streets he was surprised to see so many exotic animals, but eventually rationalized that they must have escaped from the zoo. What he could not come to terms with though, was that these wild beasts could speak. It was a gradual thing, and at first he simply avoided them, assuming it was a trick of his mind that he heard words from these dangerous beasts. For a while, he simply shook it off as a coincidence, the ramblings of a lonely mind, until one day he came face to face with a hyena. Rather than attack him, the animal stopped and looked at him and, much to his surprise, actually began speaking to him. Terrified, he used the last of his bullets on the creature, thinking it was a demon. Surely, if such things here could talk, he must be in hell.
However, the next creature Joost met was far different. He had been trying to break into a locked convenience store when the dog appeared, brown and shaggy, it approached with tail wagging. At first he was unsure of the animal, but at the same time, he reminded him of the puppy he once had as a child. Rather than bark or make a fuss, it simply walked up to him and nuzzled his hand and then turned away, as though trying to get him to follow. Taking the hint, he followed and the dog lead him around the side where there was an open window. Impossible for the dog to reach, but an easy climb for Joost. Surprised, he scratched the animal behind the ears and found that is still wore a collar, embroidered with the name Musaleh. Thinking that was a silly name for a dog, he started calling him Max for short, and the two have been inseparable ever since. It is a very simple relationship: the man feeds the dog, and the dog protects him from the wild beasts of Isola. The dog does seem to have an unsettling level of intelligence though, and he soon discovered that he could issue complex orders to it and Musaleh would see them completed.
Eventually, Joost came across other humans in his travels, and quickly persuaded them to join him. His former position of authority and quick wits drawing them to him. Together they have managed to scrape together what was left of human civilization, clinging to the ways of the dead. Still holding onto his former position as protector, he believes all human life is sacred, and above all else, must be preserved. From this standpoint, he has ordered all people to take up arms to protect themselves from the creatures that stocked the city. Food, shelter and other basic necessities are also becoming scarce, and they must make use of the resources at hand. That meant sending out hunters and gatherers into the city to claim what they could back from the demons who now inhabited it.

She cares really only for her snake friend.
History
Charm was an orphan girl who roamed the streets. Eventually she was caught and put in the foster system. She has gone by many names, each new foster home, giving her a new name. But there is only one name she truly response to and that is Charm. A random lady who only spoke spanish in the city that Charm was found in, called Charm by many bad names... so meaning devil. There was one that stuck out though.. Snake Charmer. And thus, Charm named herself Charmer. She liked it. There was a reason behind the name though. For at the time she was found by this spanish lady, Charm had a boa constrictor wrapped around her shoulders. It was a friend of hers. It helped her catch the mice on the street and kept the wild/stray dogs away from her. When the disease came, many died, including Charm's newest foster parents. Not really sad about that, Charm set out to find her snake friend and since then, they have became inseparable, specially since the snake now could talk to Charm.
