Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Attican felt as Lani sidled into his left flank. Again despite it all he smiled a bit, his own satisfied murr escaping his mouth. It did feel nice to have someone laying with him for once. A strange sound came from his 'partner' and he chuckled a bit, relaxing even more.

The brute's breathing was just getting regulated and even when a howl carried in from the outside world. He tipped his head up for a second to try to decipher the call, but the thick stone walls distorted and skewed it enough to make it quiet and unintelligible. The voice was one that he had heard before, but not something he could quite pin out. With an err of caution the Keeper laid his head back down, this time without closing his eyes. He tried thinking, trying to run through all the possibilities for the howl .

It appeared to be in defiance of his efforts though, the fuzz still sat in his head. It was like a thin sheet of film, crinkling itself into the thought process of his brain and not letting many trains of thought in. His brows furrowed, trying to clear it. It was different from the normal cloudiness that usually dissipated with sleep, instead it felt almost as if it wrapped around his head, blocking certain processes altogether. The more he tried to think the more it seemed to blocked.

"Ugh," the brute mumbled, bringing a foreleg up to scratch near his temple. He tried not to move to much in order to not disturb Lani, but the sudden lack of intellect raised some concern. Trying to not jump to too many conclusions though he tried resting once more, forcing his head to rest on his paws. Perhaps he was just tired.

He looked to the white wolf that still appeared as happy as a wolf could be. Her face etched with zero potentials of concern and he sighed again as he looked. Yes, perhaps just the recent past events just made him paranoid. He was tired from his run and everything else and a good drabble of rest would do him good. Attican nestled in a bit tighter, curling his tail so that the tip rested on the female's back paws. His eyes closed, for the second time preparing to doze.

...... It didn't last long.

Mirage lept from his spot howling, literally careening his body through the cavernous space. There was scrabbling against the rock floor as the still-decently-young wolf ran his way around until he came up to the now very confused figure of the Keeper. His hackles had instinctively raised to the sudden noise, both the hairs on his shoulders and rump standing on end.

Sir, may I speak with you please?

The black adolescent looked at his face with both expectancy and fear. With his face pinched Attican nodded fervently, still partially laying down since Lani was still there. "What is it?" he asked, voice laced with concern. The young brutes' fright did not match up with the normal kind that usually accompanied wolves with normal nightmares. No, this was different. "Are you alright?"

(This post feels so subpar for me... Must be out of it.)

Xani
- Female - 21 - Fighter -

Xani once again fell into a quick, deep sleep. She knew it wasn't healthy to live like this, but she couldn't help herself. She had so many responsibilities as of late and along with the added drama, she was just dead tired all the time. While she slept she had no dreams, but there was an uneasy feeling around her. It was with a rather unpleasant jolt that she awoke, her head nearly hitting the top of her small den.

Rumbling, she fought to get herself out of the small hole she was in. It took a bit of work, but she finally managed to get out. After a quick shake to get rid of the knots in her muscles, she glanced around the cave. Everyone was still just lazing around, so she decided to go outside and see what Resin planned on doing. Exiting the cave, she turned to the right. However, Resin and Ahote were no longer there.

A strange feeling settled within her. Ahote and Resin were gone, and Hrafn was most likely still gone too. Had they gone after him, or had they gone off somewhere else? A quick snuffle allowed her to pick up a leading scent that happened to go in the same direction that Hrafn's trail had earlier. A light growl escaped her as she once again took off after her packmates.

As Xani passed Hrafn's earlier resting place, she noticed that he had left. A curse escaped her as she continued on, the scents of Resin and Ahote growing stronger. Suddenly, she stumbled upon the group. Hrafn was between the alpha and Ahote, bringing an odd twang of something to Xani's forethought. It was quickly banished as her eyes were drawn to the horizon. She stepped silently up next to Ahote, her eyes focused on the land before her.

A bright glow had engulfed the forest as a dark black cloud covered the sky. She could almost feel it as it drew closer, the tightening in her lungs making her want to run. She had never seen anything like it in her life, but every fiber of her being was screaming 'run'. "We have to leave... There's something... something not right about this. I can't say what but we have to leave..." Her voice was almost pleading. Maybe she was overreacting, but she couldn't be sure.

((Now that we've got Christmas out of the way...))

Resin- Alpha Female- 40 Summers

Though others came and spoke, the Alpha's eyes remained locked securely on the writhing mass of light. It was utterly mesmerizing. She watched as it turned from a small, bright ball into a long burning snake of light. The trees were being eaten alive by this mass of yellow and orange and she finally snapped out of her hypnotized state. Anything that could eat trees that fast could surely eat them much faster.

When she had joined Hrafn, who still sat staring, they hadn't been able to smell or hear the light from below. Now an acrid, thick stench met her nose and she shook her head lightly, trying to rid her nares of the scent. This was a bad smell. The light must not be the sun. It must be a hungry monster, bent on devouring everything around it. They were nestled atop a hill and were able to look down upon the scene in the valley below. Dark shapes ran away from the writhing mass of bright tendrils and as they drew slowly closer, she made them out to be animals of all shapes and sizes. Ice cats, muskox, rabbits, reindeer... everything ran for their very lives.

Xani's pleading tones caught her ears and she turned her attention to the newly appointed Beta and nodded. "Collect the pack. We have to move fast. Out and around this bright, hungry monster." Taking a step towards the other female, she continued. "I'm going to need you to take the lead. I still can't run fast enough, so I'll head up the rear and make sure no one falls behind." Truthfully, if anyone would fall behind, it would probably be her. As long as everyone else escaped safely though, it was a risk she would take.

Expecting Xani to rush back to them immediately, the dark female moved back to Hrafn and placed herself between him and the monster below, cutting off his field of vision. "Time to go, Hrafn. Follow Xani. Help her run point and lead the others West, around this hungry beast." Before he took off, she stopped him with an afterthought. "Don't let them see this. Take them far around."

When Hrafn dashed off after Xani, Resin took the initiative to try and wake the pack before they arrived. She howled long, hard and loud. The distance eating howl was filled with notes of urgency and danger. The call was made several times. During the first howl, her voice had been the only sound. During the last, a dull roar was coming from behind her. Roaring, screeching, screaming... Resin's eyes rolled white with fear momentarily as memories of dreams resurfaced, and then she dove forward, her paws moving as fast as they were able over the snowy landscape. Had she stopped to look over her shoulder, there was a possibility that she never would have stopped.

Hrafn- Hunter- 46 Summers

Tendrils of wafting smoke blew straight up his nose as Resin caught his attention. He listened through his coughing. The smell was unpleasant and was nothing like he'd ever smelled before. His first thought was that this monster should take a break and roll in something that smelled nice like wolves were prone to do. His second thought was that everything the monster touched, it ate, so it couldn't roll in something nice.

Pushing his imagination away, he looked at Resin, though he could barely see her. The bright light from behind her made the female look like nothing but a jet black shape with no discerning features. He could still hear her though. When her instructions were given, he nodded, gave one last long, dumb look at the bright, hungry beast then took off after Xani.

His large paws took him far and fast. Though he'd run for his life earlier, he was running for all of their lives now. That thought alone made him feel no pain, no muscle weakness, no shortness of breath. Soon he was running in stride with Xani; the light wolf and her dark counterpart running full out, side by side. Already the path that led to the cave could be seen up ahead. Seeing the path gave him a new spurt of energy and he dove ahead, entering first the path, then the cave at breakneck speed.

"Wake up!" He roared; the echoing in the cave would ensure that no one still slept. "We're all in danger and we must move out immediately!" Not wasting any time, he ran to the right, shoving his nose rudely into the sleeping forms of wolves and ferreting them out of their hiding places in the rocky walls. He made his rounds, harshly bumping each wolf, young and old. Not only would it wake them, but the possible anger in such an abrupt rousing would make them snap out of their sleepy stupors more quickly.

Isis
{{Fae||fighter||36||With Kuolema ||

She stared at the young brute, blinking slowly she turned her head just a bit before finally speaking. "Why would anyone name their child such a word?" She asked her tone cool distant, she was not ready to except that this pup had survived being raised by Drago, unscathed, undamaged. She slowly sat in the cold snow, wrapping her tail about her haunches she studied the younger brute. He did not have the look of his father to him, nor did he carry her own looks.

"You look like my father, your grandfather," She said softly keeping her eyes on the wolf that sat before her. She didn't know what to say to him, if anything at all. She didn't know if she could trust him, taking a deep breath she let it out with along drawn out huff waiting for his next words.

Mirage
{{Brute||Omega||10|| W/Attican|}}

He looked from Attican to Lani and then back to the wise keeper. "My...dream," he said slowly uncertainly now. "perhaps it was just a nightmare, but it was of us, being here in this cave, and we were choking on fog." He swallowed he could still feel the burn in his throat. "We were all choking and some were dying, and we could not find our way from this cave," He said quickly. "I think perhaps we should leave, tell Resin it is not safe,"

He fidgeted letting his front paws dance across the stone, a low uneasy whine escaping him. "we are not safe, Attican, I feel it not just in my mind, but in my bones and in my soul, we will loose many if we stay on here..." he words trailed off as he looked down.

Kuolema
{{Brute||Loner/fighter||14||W/Isis

He blinked at her first question then laughed, before correcting himself quickly. "He never named me, I was pup, or child.." He said calmly softly. "I did not gain a name, until I joined the pack Ieft to find this pack," he said softly. "When I first came among them after leaving father, they did not speak as you or I or even father spoke, they had their own...language, and the word that is my name, Kuolema, means Son of Death, and I felt then it fit me well, so I took it as my namesake," He said softly concluding the small store.

He watched this wolfess silently before speaking. "Are you Curse?" He asked and when she shook her head he knew. "You are Isis," A sharp nod. "He lied...you are not dead," He paused and blinked at her next statement. "My grandfather, I always wondered this..." he wished to continue this conversation, when a loud howl filled the night air, he and the Fae Isis, his mother were both on their feet. He glanced at her. "They'll most likely need our help...shall we continue this later?" He asked and when she nodded he lept through the bushes headed for the cave the pack were sleeping in.
Tentatively returning to Rping

Xani
- Female - 21 - Fighter -

As Xani finished speaking, she turned back to stare at the glowing mass. Her tail sunk a bit, but she refused to cower. She might be scared, but she was by no means weak. The light before her held her attention as she took it all in. The cloud burned her lungs as she breathed it in and the light seemed to have its own life. It took Resin's voice to snap her out of her reverie. She turned her complete attention to her alpha.

At Resin's words, Xani took pause. She would be running lead? It was definitely a step up in responsibility. Instantly, however, she was upset at her words. If Resin was to run rear, there was a chance that she could get left behind. She had never had a wound as grievous as Resin's, but she had seen the difficulty Resin had while moving. She opened her mouth to protest, but snapped her mouth shut and nodded. The second Resin turned away, the beta turned and bolted.

For the third time today, she followed the trail in the snow. Though she ran full out, Hrafn was soon sprinting beside her. The way they moved together was something to be admired, but there wasn't time now. She was focused on returning quickly, and thus keeping her paws level and fast. When they reached the cave, Hrafn sprinted in right before Xani.

The beta followed Hrafn's example, rudely awakening every wolf within sight. Many turned to growl, but held their anger when they saw their bristling beta hovering over them. "Everyone up! We are leaving, and we are leaving now! Hrafn and I will be running point. You are rested and full. Let your energy serve you now." She turned, exiting the cave. She wanted to round up all the wolves around the cave's opening, leaving Hrafn to ferret out the stragglers. Throwing back her head, she howled loud and clear- 'ScarPaw pack assemble!'

((Yay, it's finally over! I'm so happy when the holiday season is over... Just call me scrooge.))

Ahote
Male | 46 | Fighter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

When Xani appeared out of the darkness, Ahote startled, flinching back before he realized who she was. Shaking his head, he closed his eyes to keep from being blinded once more, and held close to her, taking some small amount of comfort from being sandwiched between the two large wolves. Unfortunately, closing his eyes off to the sight below only sharpened his other senses. Just on the edge of his hearing, he could pick up a strange crackling, a groaning roar that seemed to grow larger the longer he listened. So too does the heavy scent of smoke, stinging at his sensitive nose, no matter how he tries to rid himself of it, the smell clings to his nasal cavity, forcing him to sneeze and open his eyes once more. Next to him, he heard Xani's pleas, and was about to agree with her to help convince the other two to move, but Resin finally hears them.

Turning his back to the monster below, Ahote listened to Resin's instructions, feeling fear grow in him the longer he stood there. It was as though he could feel that light clawing its way up the hill towards them, and it made his skin crawl. Before long, Xani and Hrafn had leapt away to attend to their duties, leaving him alone with the wounded Alpha. Perhaps he should have gone with them, to help Xani is seeing that the pack moved, but he felt rooted in place. There was simply no way he was going to leave her behind.

Seconds later, Resin lifted her head to send out another warning howl, and Ahote joins her, lending strength and distance to it. Behind them, the roar of the monster seemed to grow stronger, as though their defiance of it had angered it, and it sought to drown them out. He could feel its maddened, hot breath on his back and his eyes grew wide and he looked to Resin, urging her silently to run.

Finally, she leapt forward and Ahote was close on her heels. He pulled up next to her, and forced himself to stay there, shortening his stride to ensure he kept close to the injured Alpha. Though their path took them back towards the cave, he couldn't help but feel worry grow inside him again. Her wound was perhaps nothing to worry about normally, but in these circumstances, the fresh gash would torn open and that would only slow her further. The thought brought with it a sort of grim determination, and Ahote would do what he could to make sure they stayed with the pack. Even if it meant staying behind and helping her follow the trail.

Lani
Female | 57 | Hunter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Lani lay with her paws crossed in front of her, looking up at Mirage with a bit of curiosity. Her little ears were perked forward while he spoke, trying to take in everything he said. For being northing more than a dream it sure seemed to have unsettled the young wolf, and his insistence is unsettling even to the normally laid-back hunter.

Still snuggled close to Attican, Lani tipped her head back to look at him, a bit upside down, wondering what he would have to say. However, before he could open his mouth, Xani and Hrafn burst into the cave, yelling and waking everyone up. Startled alf out of her skin, Lani leapt to her feet and looked around, trying to figure out what was going on. There were no explanations, but the urgency in their voices was quite plain and she looked back to the two brutes beside her. One young, the other old, but both of the same mind now. THe irony of it all hits her suddenly, and she chuckles, her accustomed smile returning. "Well pup, it looks like you'll get it your way for a change," she said, then stepped back to nudge Attican. "You ready keeper? Looks like we'll have to take a rain check on that nap as well as the rest of your bath," she finished, and shook out her pelt, heading towards the entrance, ready to run with the rest of them.

Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Attican listened intently to every word that Mirage spoke. His amber eyes bore into the black young wolf, subconsciously standing up as he did so. He flitted his eyes to Lani, cocking his head up in motion for her to stand as well. Everything that was said to him the Keeper took as true fact. Simplistic nightmares did not warrant such a reaction or look as this. No, this was very much different.

"I believe you." He gruffed, already turning his head to the sleeping wolves around him. "We must move them." Naptime was over. Whatever exactly it was that Mirage had seen Attican was not sure, but he did not wish to wait and find out. He did not know that Resin and other high ranks already had visual on the unknown danger, or the fact that they had even left. The brute sucked in a large breath to belt out orders, but when he came to actually speak a different male voice seemed to come out instead.

"Wake up! We're all in danger and we must move out immediately!"

Hrafn came bursting forward, eyes nearly rolling with the ferocity of his call. If there had been a need to confirm Attican's suspicions this was definitely it. He joined his own barking to the brute's call, heading towards the entrance. What it was he didn't know, where it was he didn't know, what the plan was.. he didn't know. All the Keeper did know was that it was time to go.

Just as he was going to poke his head out the entrance Xani too came bursting in, her fur bristling just as much as Hrafn's. She came barking the same types of calls and rallying the pack. His teeth grit. "What exactly is going on Xani??" He asked hastily, catching her before she ran out of the cave. Resin's howls could be heard from the distance and it only frustrated the brute further. Obviously everyone in high rank had been in on something that he hadn't and the lack of knowledge was getting to him.

"Where's Resin?"

Pilot
32 - Fae - No Rank

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Pilot was suddenly awaken by gruff echoing calls through the cave, something or other about danger and having to get up. Huh? There was no danger here.. she was.. The wolfess yawned... fine...

Suddenly a sharp nip to her tail startled her truly awake. The big blackish brute had nosed and nipped at her as he made his rounds to find and awaken everyone. "Hey!" She called, scrabbling up so that she popped out of her mini sleeping hole. Her voice was drowned out though by other calls, yelling at everyone to get up.

The insides of the cave was not matched by really any other word than 'chaos.' Wolves were running about, pups getting scruffed up, and others still were being shoved awake. All the while more orders were reverberating around the walls, sounding like they were coming from every angle. She ambled her way to the others, more instinct than anything else kicking in. Her mind was still foggy from sleep, but where the others went for now she did.

{{Okay I'll be honest and say right out that I know that this post is really nearing the "garbage" state. But I've truly been staring at this pile of words for over an hour now and nothing seems to be getting any better. Eh, maybe it's just the post-Christmas... if anything I'll blame it on that for now. haha.

Xani
- Female - 21 - Fighter -

Just as Xani prepared to leave the cave, she was stopped by a mass of fur before her. It took her a moment to collect herself and recognize the mass as their Keeper. Attican was obviously distressed, as were many other wolves. While they were following her orders, they were definitely questioning what was going on. Taking a deep breath, she turned a bit.

Projecting her voice through the cavern, Xani addressed the pack. "I know most of you are wondering what is going on. Please just trust in me and Hrafn. Once we get to safety, Resin will explain all to you. Once we are assembled outside, we will move out!" Taking a deep breath, she relaxed a moment before turning back to the wolf next to her. She lowered her voice drastically, and the chaos around her made it so only those within a foot or so would be able to hear.

"Resin is coming, Attican. She will be running rear guard this time." The beta tried to mask the worry in her voice, but she didn't have much time to try that hard. "I am not exactly sure what is happening but... something is wrong, Attican. There was a bright light in the trees and a noxious black cloud and... it burned my lungs and eyes... We just have to leave, and we have to leave now." Backing up, she turned and exited the cave to rally the pack.

((Consider me Scroogette then. I did get some good news this Christmas though. I'm going to be an aunt in a few months. I'm not a fan of kids, but that's kind of exciting.))

Resin- Alpha Female- 40 Summers

A strong gust of wind blew a billowing cloud of smoke towards them. They were running, so of course they were breathing deeply. The sudden assault of smoke to her lungs brought Resin to a quick halt as she coughed hard, her yellow eyes watering profusely. By the time she was finished, her throat felt raw, as if torn to shreds. The roaring beast behind them was growing steadily louder and she searched Ahote's face, noting the obvious fear etched into his features.

As soon as she was able, she began to run again. Unfortunately, her lungs had become slightly accustomed to the smoke. Though she still coughed as they ran, she didn't cough as much or as harshly. The wound in her chest ached as she pushed herself and soon she felt a wetness upon her foreleg. Her short time of healing had been all for naught it seemed, for the wound had been ripped open once more just as Ahote had feared.

The dull throb of the bloodied wound turned into a lancing pain and the dark female had to stop, her head hanging low as she panted and gulped in the contaminated air. Taking a moment, she looked behind her. Big mistake. Yellow eyes widened as she saw the path of destruction that the bright beast made. Both she and Ahote were in that path and the beast was coming right for them. A large tree, infected by the writhing tendrils of the light beast came crashing to the ground, flaming hot cinders rocketing towards the pair of canines. One landed upon Resin's cheek and she yelped aloud, leaping away from the screaming tree and pawing at her burning muzzle. There was barely any damage. Just some singed fur, but the sensation had been shocking.

More trees could be heard screaming as the sap bubbled out of them and the roars became louder still. Once more she was on her feet, nudging Ahote to make sure that he would follow her. They ran and they ran and yet it seemed like the bright monster was gaining. As they ran, Resin turned her attention to Ahote, calling out over the chaotic din that surrounded them. "You have to go ahead! Warn them of the urgency! If they dawdle, they'll never make it out in time!" Knowing that he would argue, she shook her head. "You're faster than I am right now. You run and help our pack. Take everyone West!"

Not giving him a moment to argue, she quickly gave him a lick upon his muzzle, then turned on a dime and ran in a different direction. "I'll meet you out West!" She moved as fast as her shoulder would allow, which, after being reopened, wasn't that fast at all. The good thing about getting this head start was that the wind seemed to be blowing the monster straight North. If she cut to the West, she should be able to run out of the wide path that it was cutting.

More than once she had to stop just to breathe. Digging a hole in the snow, she placed her muzzle within it, inhaling the crisp, cool oxygen that had been trapped within. Her lungs thanked her heartily, and soon she was on her way once more. It seemed as if she ran for hours. The sound of the bellowing beast had lessened, but she could still see the light of it off in the distance.

After a time, she slowed to a walk. Blood had been steadily dripping from her shoulder for a while, leaving the story of her journey in her wake. Too much blood loss and too little fresh air eventually brought her to a stop. She sat, leaning against an old, thick pine, the sap sticking to her fur though she hardly cared. Her body wanted nothing more than to sleep and her mind fought with it, willing her limbs to move. It seemed that her body would be the victor. Wobbly legs gave way and the Alpha was deposited upon her stomach, her muzzle covered in snow. Her last thought before sleep claimed her was for the safety of her pack. She pleaded with the ancestors to keep them safe.

Hrafn- Hunter- 46 Summers

With a glance he gave a slightly apologetic look to Pilot, the blonde female that he had bitten roughly. Once everyone was rounded up, he pushed them out of the cave like a slave driver, barking and gnashing his teeth at their heels. They needed some oomph in their steps and hopefully this would give it to them. With a final quick run of the cave, he made sure that no one was left behind. Achieving certainty that he was the only one inside, he rushed through the entrance and back outside.

The pack was already running, Xani at the lead. Again he took up the rear, howling and snarling as if the hounds of hell chased them. Perhaps that was closer to the truth than they knew. What if that bright, angry beast was from the underworld? Then they had better run faster, hadn't they? He continued pushing them forward. When a wolf dropped behind, young or old, he nipped at their rump or tail, giving them small jolts of adrenaline here and there.

Dark amber eyes scanned left and right, watching both the approaching beast and the wolves ahead of him. He made sure that no one would fall behind to be forgotten. As he ran, he ticked each wolf off of a mental list, counting them just to double check. As he was counting, he saw an puff of snow. A younger pup had tripped up and had fallen. Wasting no time, Hrafn latched into the scruff of the small wolfs neck and carried it along with him as he ran. Which pup it was, he didn't know. Everything had happened too fast.

The air had been thick and hot near the cave, but as they ran it had become thinner and cooler. In time, they were all able to breathe normally once more. West had certainly been the direction to go. Deciding that they were far enough out of dangers way, the massive black brute slowed and deposited the pup on it's paws once more. With a nudge, he sent it on ahead of him. "Keep running, little one." As the pup ran off, Hrafn took a moment to breathe in as much cool air as possible before starting off again.

Before he broke into a full run, he glanced over his shoulder. The destructive, rampaging monster was far behind them, but they still weren't far enough from the path of danger. If the monster changed its course, they could still be eaten by it. This would, however, be a good opportunity to let the pack slow for a few paces to take a much needed breather. Hrafn howled ahead to Xani, suggesting that they slow their pace to a gentle lope for a mile or so to let the young and old catch their breath.

Kona
female-11-freaking out running from the fire

Kona shrugged and began to tear into the carcass. The rich meat was like heaven for her empty stomach. She squeezed into the ribcage of the beast and picked out strips and chunks of meat that had stuck to the bones. She dug out bits with her claws and teeth, savoring each mouthful. Mentally, however, she chastised herself for being late to the meal. There really wasn't that much left, probably just enough to fill her belly, but there would certainly be no leftovers. From inside the cave, Kona heard Attican telling some story about his puphood.

She grunted unappreciatively. She never was one for storytelling. What was the use in them? They didn't need to reminisce about the past when it was the present they had to pay attention to and the future they had to think about. The stories that weren't true were even less useful. Who needed to know about some giant purple caribou that drank an ocean? How would something like that help you hunt, or dig a den? She tuned them out, to better concentrate on her eating. It didn't take much to pick the skeleton clean, and she made her way back into the den, curled up into her little hollow, and began snoring quietly.

Thankfully, she slept so deeply that she had no dreams, just a deep sense of contentment.

* * *

She opened her eyes to a fog creeping through the cave. Kona raised her head ever so slightly, one eye still gummed up. As she took a deep breath, however, she retched and coughed. This fog burned her throat and stung her eyes, making them water. Immediately, she jumped up, still wheezing, but alert, with her hackles raised. The fog had almost filled the cave now, and Kona could see the indistinct forms of her pack mates, anxious and confused, yelling and yelping in fear.

Another wave of this strange fog brought tears to Kona's eyes, and she fell to he stomach, feeling like she was swallowing a pinecone. To her shock, she found that the air was clearer on the ground. Awkwardly, she began to shuffle and crawl out of the hole, grasping with her front paws, shoving with her back. It only helped a little, and it slowed her down considerably, but she made it out of the den.

Staggering to her feet, she saw everyone in a panic, and soon, she saw why. The forest was infested with some leaping, crackling monster. It roared in he ears, and she felt waves of heat rolling over her fur. She squinted, both because of the black fog that emanated from this strange being, and because of the blinding light it gave off.

She blinked the afterimage away, then dashed through the disappearing underbrush. As she ran, she turned her head and watched a small branch blacken and shrivel as the creature devoured it. Kona yelped as she stumbled over a glowing log and felt it bite her, searing into her leg. Now she limped as she ran, trying to keep as little weight on her back paw as possible. A thin sliver of light leapt out in front of her as she ran, and she snarled, snapping her teeth at it. This was an enemy of the pack, and it must be taught to stay away! Then she felt her fangs clack together and yelped again as she felt intense pain on her tongue. Now resolved to avoid touching the monster at all costs, she marveled over it while at the same time, feeling an intense hatred of this creature. A creature that hurt you, just by touching it? Her stomach turned as she envisioned a battle between it and her pack. How could you even kill it? It had no bones, had no blood. It wasn't there, but it was, and it hurt.

Iparok
male-22-same as Kona

At the first whiff, Iparok jumped up, instantly awake. He could smell something-- and he didn't know what it was. That was unusual for him. Iparok usually was able to identify any scent that he came across. He had smelled so many, you see. He was just about to call attention to it when Mirage skittered about the cave, yelping about dreams and death and fog.

Within a few minutes, all the high-ranked, important wolves were yelling commands, and the cave was filling up with a strange, stinging fog. He choked on the fog spreading throughout the forest, feeling it sting his eyes and needle his throat. Iparok looked up and saw the forest being devoured by a giant, blinding bright thing.

The sun has come to earth, and it is eating everything up, he thought in his terror. He watched as it sent out tiny flecks of itself, like pollen, and he watched as the bright pollen fell and took root, spreading more and more of the thing, taking more and more of the forest. He couldn't bring himself to move at first, just gazing as the sun crept closer and closer. Everything seemed to fade away as the thing grew bigger and bigger, taking up his entire field of vision. Mighty trees fell before it, and he could see the snow fleas springing away from its dribbling, fluttering maw. His wide-open eyes were dual mirrors, reflecting naught but its gargantuan radiance.

Then he heard someone's voice, as from very far away, and he wrenched himself away. He heard the command to flee, and he bolted. Iparok felt the hot wind ruffling his fur, and he blinked as the sun's pollen blew into his eyes, stinging as they collided against his skin. He willed himself forward, his paws pounding into the snow. As he raced through the forest, it dissolved around him, devoured by the sun. He sprinted faster, letting the wind in his ears wash away the crackling of the sun and the hissing of the trees and the panicked cries of his pack mates. As before, everything faded into the background. However, this time he was concentrated on self-preservation, on outrunning the sun, not staring mesmerized at it.

Self-preservation had always been one of the most important things to Iparok. Nothing would make him give up his short time on this world. Survival was one of his strongest instincts, even over the impulse to find a mate and have pups (strangely, that was one of his weakest). He expected to live a lonely life, for what far would want a brute who would save himself over her? But at least a lonely life was better than none.

Iparok came to his senses moments before crashing into a smoldering tree. He swerved to the side immediately, grazing his shoulder on its bark. Mentally, he cursed himself. On the run from the sun was not the time to muse about his identity and speculate his future.

You fool, he growled inwardly. Focus on the present.
