Firebird knew at heart that Hawkclaw was trying to help, but she felt like tearing at that feathery pelt. Couldn't Hawkclaw see that four warriors and an apprentice had no chance at all against this clan? Maybe a better idea would be to swim out. To swim out! Firebird had always been able to swim, as Feathertail had taught her, so two of them knew how. They could teach the others, and the others might even know how to swim! The masked clan had only prepared for attack on one side, so the side that was open to the water was never even checked. Swimming would be a perfect way out.

Hawkclaw saw Firebird glance at the water, then at Hawkclaw with a look of fury and doubt. Good thing the she cat thought she was fake sleeping. She wondered if she ought to tell about Frostfall. It just seemed like she shouldn't. The guard came over, and she hurriedly shut her eyes. The guard jabbed her with a paw and said,
"Wake up lazybones! Time for your initiation!" Hawkclaw feigned sleepiness, and said,
"What?"
"The ceremony to welcome you to the clan, of course." He said with a snicker.

Firebird stood at the guard's words, eying him sleepily. The leader, Bloodstar, jumped onto the lowest branch of a tree and turned to face the clan. "We have some new recruits." The entire clan laughed wickedly, and Firebird's stomach trilled. Bloodstar jumped down again and paced around them, reaching out a claw and tapping on the side of Journeypaw's head. "Two apprentices, three warriors. Easy prey." Firebird glanced at Hawkclaw, wondering for a moment what he meant by two apprentices. Then she realized she was the second. Bloodstar thought she was an apprentice, and she hoped her friends wouldn't say otherwise.
Bloodstar purred evilly, gazing at his clan. "Softtalon, Blankeyes, and Stonepelt, hold them for 'the procedure'.". Three extremely ugly cats with cobwebs covering their faces stepped out of the crowd and held Hawkclaw down. She struggled against them, but the slight she-cat couldn't push them off. Bloodstar unsheathed his gnarled claws and scraped them along her muzzle in an 'M', leaving a trail of blood. "Tinybrain, Mouseheart, and Maggotclaw, keep her calm. Somebody get Uglyeyes.". Softtalon, Blankeyes, and Stonepelt moved to Silverscale and Bloodstar used his claws again. Another cat slunk through the crowd, dipping her greying head to Bloodstar. "You called for me. I brought these and these." She sets down two leaf bundles, one with poppy seeds and the other with nightlock. Lifting a few poppy seeds with another leaf, she stepped on Hawkclaw's throat, forcing her to open her mouth. The minute Hawkclaw opened her mouth, Uglyeyes dropped the poppy seeds in and forced her to swallow. Hawkclaw immediately went limp and stopped fighting, and Uglyeyes lifted one of the nightlock berries. Firebird gasped as the medicine cat squeezed the juice of the berry into the cut, and the blood fizzed. Silverscale jerked, trying to escape his captors, but Uglyeyes did the same to him. Shellclaw pressed against Firebird, and Firebird pressed against Feathertail. Journeypaw squirmed in between Shellclaw and Firebird, shivering as Bloodstar came closer. Tinybrain, Mouseheart, and Maggotclaw grabbed Feathertail, pulling him away, and he squeezed his eyes shut. Bloodstar sliced into his muzzle, and Firebird felt a pang of sadness for her friend. Uglyeyes dropped poppy seeds into his mouth, and dribbled the juice of the poisonous berry into the cut. Journeypaw was pulled away next, then Shellclaw. Firebird was forced to wait until he very end.
Bloodstar hissed at her, and she recoiled from him. She tried to force her way backwards, but the crowd pushed forwards, unforgiving. Paws pushed her down, and Bloodstar stood over her. "The traitor. This is the apprentice that killed your deputy, Waterheart! Now she will pay for it!" His claw dug into her, and it was all she could do not to cry out. Uglyeyes stood by Bloodstar's side, and he glanced at her. "Make it hurt." Uglyeyes purred. "Oh, I will." Cats pressed down on Firebird everywhere, and she faced the medicine cat. Uglyeyes lifted a nightlock berry, hovering it over the cut. She squeezed, and Firebird prepared herself for the pain. But when it hit her, it was worse that anything she had ever experienced. It was like fire, licking at her muzzle. She shook it out of the cut with a pained yowl, and her mouth snapped open as Uglyeyes pressed on her throat. The poppy seeds rolled into her mouth, and she swallowed willingly, wishing the pain would just go away. Then the sleep came.

The pain was immense. Bloodstar's claws were coated with grime. The dirt mixed with her blood, and it was all she could do to keep from howling. She snarled and fought her captors, but they were too strong. Suddenly, a new cat shoved her paw at her throat, and her mouth snapped open. Poppy seeds were dropped in, and she began to fade. Suddenly, she felt the cut boil. She was certain she must have been struck by lighting. She gladly welcomed the black of sleep.

The Gathering seemed to go by quickly as he wasn't paying attention to what was going on. He was too worried on what was happening to the cats that were being taken away. Going back to camp was worse. He felt like he was leaveing his apprentice and the others behind. He wasn't focused on what was going on around him and missed what Shadowbreeze was saying. He continued to pace the clearing, not noticing everyine going to sleep. Finally looking up, It was dark and the sun was begining to rise. He had worn himself out and his leggs felt like they were going to give way. He headed over to Aspenstar's den and meowed, "Aspenstar?" outside his den. He felt guilty for not speaking up sooner and his worry for the taken cats was increasing rapidly.

Shadowbreeze felt proud of herself as she trotted back into camp, with two squirrels, a mouse, and a fish. She could smell Fallenleaves by Aspenstar's den.
'Good. He can tell Aspenstar what's bothering him.' She thought. She bounced over to the warriors den, suddenly remembering she was supposed to go on patrol with Oakstorm and Suncrow. She poked each of them in turn to wake them up and said,
"We have patrol. Hurry up."

Hawkclaw woke to a throbbing muzzle. Above her stood the cat she vaguely recalled. She thought his name was Softtalon.
"Is the princess awake?" He snickered. Hawkclaw growled, and he pushed her upright.
"Go collect cobwebs. I'll make your mask." He ordered. She obeyed, not in the mood for a one on one with the stronger cat. She came back with her paw full. On her way, she looked about. Her friends were nowhere in sight. He shoved her down again, and began padding the cobwebs on her face, making extra sure to cover the m shaped scar.
'Thats why they wear masks. So no one knows if they have been forced into the clan, and that no other clans know they scar themselves.' She thought.

Feathertail glanced down at the grey scar across his nose when her woke up. A cat who he remembered as Maggotclaw stood over him, glaring down. "Get up. Your naming ceremony is soon. You need cobwebs, so go get some."

Firebird awakened to see Uglyeyes and Bloodstar standing over her. Bloodstar grunted. "Uglyeyes, the scar isn't showing. Why?" Uglyeyes hissed at him. "I told you a million times, giving them the poppy seeds first helps the scarring. It won't scar without." Bloodstar's tail flicked angrily. "Fine. Give me those!" He snatched cobwebs out of Uglyeyes' paws and pressed them onto Firebird's face. "Get up. Your naming ceremony will be soon. I think I'll call you Traitorpaw. Either that or Killerpaw."

He continued to pace around Aspenstar's den. Thinking that maybe he didn't hear, he called again but louder. "Aspenstar?" He was getting worried. He forget to check the apprentice's den for his apprentice. He didn't want to go now in case Aspenstar answered. He was tierd enough to sleep for a moon, but his worry made him sick and unable to sleep.
