the large wolfdog opened his eyes from his light resting moment to see one of the pack's hunters, a small dog who appeared to be much "too" little for the alpha, standing in front of him with a feathery grouse lying at her paws. the alpha gave a sniff at the dead bird, his face like stone as he studied the catch. he had always been particularly hard on some of his pack mates including the tri-colored dog that stood before him. fluffy, in his eyes, was way to small to be a hunter in the pack. she lacked the strength and power that most of his other hunters possessed, and he didn't see what use she was on the hunts to bring prey home for the entire pack. a buck could easily step on the dogs leg and injure her severely and she was too short to do any damage to the larger prey besides nip at their heels and annoy it. he could see that she was a determined little dog, but determination meat nothing if you didn't have enough power behind it. caleb didn't see why the fae still wanted to be hold her position, but he had to admit that she did bring in a few decent snacks every once in a while. he looked over at the female once again before releasing a sigh and pulling the grouse over to himself. the alpha male growled lowly to dismiss the hunter before returning his focus to the small bird.

these might make my nest a bit more comfortable. the black german shepherd hybrid thought to himself as he carefully plucked away at the brown and white feathers. they tasted weirdly in his mouth and left an odd texture on his tongue as he spat them out on the rock surface next to him. he didn't mind too badly, however, because in the end it would be worth it to have extra comfort for his large body. the cold stone floor wasn't very nice to the male, especially because of his past injuries that still liked to bother him every once in a while. once he reached the skin of the bird, he tore into it hungrily. the meat of the bird was tender and soft in his jaws as he chewed the sweet prey while looking out over the pack. he could tell that some of the pack dogs, like fluffy, were patiently waiting for him to be finished so that they could fight over the small portion of leftovers. he didn't plan on leaving much for the rest of the pack as their wasn't much meat on the bird as it was, but fortunately for them a tall dark brown and tan coat caught his attention. it was the second command of the pack, a dog who had proven his loyalty and strength to caleb by fighting for it.

it was no secret that if any dog wanted to move up in the pack hierarchy they had to fight for it. it was the pack's tradition ever since caleb had decided to make the rule, and he didn't plan on changing it. the alpha found it very interesting and entertaining to watch two dogs fight over a rank to prove themselves. it was a way to gain honor for at least a short while, and the alpha thought it was a good way to weed out the weakest dogs within the pack. all the way from a beta to the omega, any dog could challenge another to a dual. if the omega desired a hunting spot all they had to do was announce it and fight a current hunter, if they won then they got the hunter spot and the previous hunter would be the new omega. caleb had witnessed many of the fights with some of them, like the most recent one, had ended in a death. a poor dog named pip had fallen victim to a patrol dog when he tried to challenge him, he had been nearly two times less the size than the patrol dog and had simply lost his life due to one powerful swipe of a paw. it sent him flying into a sharp rock in the clearing, killing him instantly. the death didn't have a big impact on caleb, any dog with any sense of logic knew that ole pip was foolish for being greedy.

a huff escaped the male as he rose to his paws, licking the blood from his jaws while savoring every last bit of it. lucky for her, fluffy had earned caleb's happiness for the morning. the wolf mix tossed the remains of the bird towards the small dog with his nose and gave her a very faint nod, giving her permission to finish the rest of the bird off. "eat now. go back out later and catch something else." he said gruffly to the fae before he locked his gaze onto the pelt of his beta. with a final growl the alpha male leaped from the rock hovering above the camp and landed confidently in the camp clearing. dust flew up in all directions but he opted to ignore it before striding over to marmaduke. the more dominant male approached with his tail slightly raised, a well known sign that showed his wolf habits. "marmaduke." the male growled lightly, staring directly at the large brindle striped dane.

lexie couldn't wait to get out of the camp and hunt. she hadn't been able to go out of camp since early yesterday morning, and it was beginning to take its toll. she was an athletic dog, she needed to run, hunt, and well, be able to feel freedom. no matter how thankful she was for the pack and having shelter every night, she still felt like she was lost within the pack. it almost felt like she was in a cage on most days, when she couldn't be out of the camp and in the open air. it was relieving to know that she was only a few minutes away from freedom. "alright then, I don't think we will need any one else to hunt with but feel free to grab someone on the way out if you see fit!" she said with a bit of impatience in her tone. she wanted to at least bring back a couple hares and maybe even a larger mammal for the alpha, maybe then she could earn some free time away from camp herself. she didn't know which of the other hunters might want to tag along, but she knew that they probably shouldn't push the limit of three dogs on one patrol. it became too cluttered and disorganized when there were too many sets of paws after one piece of prey. even when taking down a deer lexie preferred to have the maximum of three dogs to avoid bashing into one another during the chase.

lexie waited a few more heartbeats while looking around before nodding her head and bounding off, heading straight for he camp exit. she squeezed past the wall of thorns and vines with ease without taking a look behind her to see if chase was following. she figured that the fast male would catch up to her anyways, so why slow down and risk missing out on a hare? the golden brown fae's ocean blue eyes appeared brighter as the sky reflected on them, making them appear to be more of a baby blue color. she, however, didn't take notice of the bright sun shining down on her as she raced through the trees. the softness of the grass beneath her paw pads was soothing as she slowed to a stop near the tree line. she had always enjoyed nature even when she had lived with her longpaws. they had often taken her on walks in the forest when it hadn't been so hot out and she had enjoyed them thoroughly. back then she had been amazed at all the different bushes, trees, and flowers but now it was like she had never lived any other way which made her both relieved and sad. she didn't want to forget her longpaws and the life she had before the big growl but it was nice to finally feel comfortable with her surroundings.

in front of her, a wide expanse of water flowed downhill with a couple rocks sticking out from the surface. it was the pack knew as the stepping stones, which allowed them to safely cross the river without drowning. after the big growl, however, the flowing water had become contaminated and unsafe to drink from. it was a shame really, lexie would glad take a drink from the water if she hadn't seen what it had done to the dogs who drank it before. she had no desire to die so horribly... maybe there would be a puddle of water amongst the grass in the meadow. the fae sighed before slowly lowering her paw to one of the first stones, testing its sturdiness. once she deemed it safe she allowed her full weight to be put on the stone before looking to the sky. dark grey clouds were beginning to form in the sky, a sure sign that it was going to storm later that day. "looks like its going to ra-" she had began to say out loud, guessing that chase would have caught up to her by now, but was cut short when a strange scent drifted across the tall grass. it was strong, and she could tell that whatever it was, was nearby. immediately lexie turned tail and leaped back onto the bank, she wasn't going to risk being shoved into the water by some malicious stray.

the female retriever gazed across the meadow and sniffed the air carefully. it wasn't everyday that she ran into something so...exciting and new. everyday it seemed to be the same thing, but not today. lexie huffed and looked behind her shoulder, "i think the scent is coming from over there. let's go." she pointed with her muzzle to a tall patch of grass on the other side of the river. a small jingling sound rang in her ears as she leapt back down onto the stepping stones and hopped from one to the other. she recognized it immediately, it was a collar. lexie wagged her tail slightly before carefully picking her way through the grass siliently. to her surprise, it wasn't long before she could actually hear a voice above the calm wind. no wait, two voices! lexie stopped in her tracks and waited for chase to catch up before she approached the pair of dogs. then, slowly she started forward once more until she broke through the grass. in front of her, two hunting dogs appeared to be in an argument, but over what? only a few moments later lexie was able to detect the cause, a freshly killed rabbit. the pack's rabbit. lexie's ears went flat against her head as she looked up to the larger dog of the two. he was a handsome dark chocolate brown pointer with bright amber eyes and a muscular body frame. "what are you doing here?" she demanded, feeling relieved that she hadn't gone out by herself instead of brining chase with her.

riley was amused to see the look of surprise that appeared on the fae's face as she realized that he didn't mean any serious trouble. he imagined that the look was caused by the rest of the strays, because he too had witnessed quite a lot of strays who had been much ruder. he could see multiple scars and even more recent injuries that had been inflicted by other dogs on the female's pelt. it wasn't hard to pick out the patches of missing fur and torn skin, but riley tried to ignore it the best that he could. he had nearly gotten his head bite off before by a dog who was sensitive to other dogs staring at his injuries, and he wasn't about to do it again. she appeared to be like himself, quiet and reserved, but there were many differences between the two dogs besides their looks, he was sure. riley had always relied on his wits to get himself out of bad situations and nothing else. he wasn't as big as most of the other strays that he came across so he needed to be smart in order to work himself out of situations. he had found it quite easy to outsmart the biggest of dogs purely because of the reason that they weren't as quick and witty like himself, and besides, it was quite funny to trick the largest of dogs.

as riley returned his attention on the collie mix, he could tell that she was lost in her own thoughts. he tilted his head to the side slightly, perhaps she was reliving one of those moments right now? maybe seeing another stray was too much for her and it had reminded her of some memories that she would have forgotten had it not been for him. maybe, just maybe she would want to leave now because she was too uncomfortable to stay in the same building as an enemy? that would sure make it easier for riley and he secretly hoped that it was the case with this fae. he didn't see how he could possibly live alongside another dog, especially after the big growl had ruined so many opportunities for food, water, and shelter. so one of them would have to go most likely, but who? would he have to fight for the meat shop, and more importantly if he did, would he have a chance of winning? he couldn't be so sure either way.

the female in front of him started to move once more with a sigh escaping her jaws. a faint glimmer of hope swelled in the dog's chest as he thought about the possibilities of what her next words would be. he remained calm on the outside, however, and managed to catch the slightly uncomfortable glance that she gave him. her words were not very relieving though, and he realized that she had just continued their conversation from before. a very small frown formed across his muzzle, "i see..." he murmured quietly, his mind was too busy working out his response to sound too enthusiastic. "and when do you plan on leaving this shop?" he inquired directly, bringing his brown eyes up to meet hers cautiously.

The first traces of warmth from the sun danced across the female's fur, heating it considerably as she awoke from her slumber. Though she had only just awoken (and slept very well throughout the night) the pleasant weather was already trying to persuade the sleepy canine to take a nap. No, I can't she groaned internally as she slowly forced her eyes to open, the light blinding her for a few seconds before her brown eyes adjusted to the new light. She remembered the days when she would wake up like this in her longpaws' house, the sun shining brightly through the windows and smiling at the young dog. Her dog beg, a sky blue bed just the right size for her to curl up in, was directly under the window of one of the few upstairs rooms, and so each morning when the sun chased away the night, sun beams would race through the windows and land on her silky fur. What could she complain about?

The sound of movement around her pulled Bluejay from her thoughts. She looked around to see that some of the others were already awake, including her brother Chase. Yawning, Bluejay used her long legs to push herself up into a sitting position, small stones leaping from her pelt as she did so. Before the big growl, Bluejay would've thought this day to be fantastic: the sun was shining, the sky was a brilliant blue, and there was a warm breeze drifting through the air, however now that food and water were scarce, rain had become one of Bluejay's favourite things, and sunny days were just as unwelcome as fleas.

More and more of the pack appeared to have woken up now, and so Bluejay stood and stretched out her legs, planning to soon go scouting out the surrounding areas for anything unusual or unwanted in the pack's territory, perhaps even leaving the territory and exploring past their boundaries. Glancing briefly up at the Alpha, she gave a small nod of respect, though her attention was soon elsewhere as she planned out in her head where she would go scouting today.

The thought of chasing after prey in the meadow sent a rush of adrenaline through Chase's body. His ears perked as the huntress spoke. His eyes scanned the camp for any others, though his response was quick, as he had picked up on the slight impatient tone to the female's voice, "I think two should be fine. We don't want to bring too many dogs with us" he replied calmly. He was eager to start the hunt, like he was any day when he went out hunting. It was perhaps one of his favourite things to do, besides laying about in the sun after a good days hunting. It didn't seem like he'd be sunbathing once he got back today though; a storm was on it's way, he could feel the air changing even as he followed behind the huntress.

Chase ran after Lexie, eventually coming to a comfortable, constant pace. The feeling of the wind on his fur as he ran, the feeling of being free and just running, it was a feeling Chase had grown to love, and made him wonder how he had ever survived being chained to a tree in the longpaw's garden. Day after day, just sitting there, not really doing anything...How did he manage to get through it? It would be hard to believe that the hunter he was today and the sorry looking dog he was before were the same canine.

After what only seemed like a few moments, Lexie came to a stop, and so Chase slowed down, coming to a halt beside the hunter. In front of them was a wide expanse of water, with various rocks reaching up from the murky, contaminated water. Chase watched as Lexie tested the rock before jumping on to it, and moved forward to jump down when she moved on to the next rock, though cast a glance to the darkening sky as Lexie spoke but was cut short. He looked round at her, wondering what was wrong, though his question was quickly answered when he too caught the strange scent being carried by the wind. He nodded to Lexie as she suggested which way she thought the scent was coming from, and followed as they headed towards the unfamiliar scent of a stray.

The two hunters broke through the grass. In front of them stood two dogs: they both appeared to be pointers, chocolate brown and white in colour. The jingling sound had been coming from one of the dog's collars. Chase had to hold back a sneer at the sight of it, why would he keep a longpaw collar on?

Chase's ears pulled back, though he didn't say anything as Lexie had already asked the question he was going to say. He glared at the two strays, taking note of the dead rabbit at their paws. A quiet warning growl escaped Chase's jaws as he waited for their response.

xxxxxThe spaniel's head popped up quickly as she heard Caleb start to eat. By
his hungry looking demeanor, she knew that a dog the size of this one wasn't likely to leave leftovers from a tiny, puny bird. Fluffy shook her head, sometimes she could be too optimistic. Optimistic to a point where she didn't even believe herself. Caleb and the other dogs had always been more serious and negative than her, and she had always found this boring. If you never looked at the brighter side of things, what was the point? But lately, Fluffy had started to think that maybe being a little negativeand serious at times was a good thing. If you never tried to make the best out of things, you wouldn't get your hopes up too high... Right?

Fluffy was licking her paws when the smell of her catch got stronger and something bumped her side. Looking down at the source, she realized it was the grouse remains that Caleb hadn't finished yet. She licked her lips but tried not to act too hungry as she stood. She was about to thank her alpha for letting her eat the rest when her eyes widened by his next response. Catch something else? What did she look like? A hunting machine? She sighed and looked up, B-but I just... Fluffy stuttered. He didn't possibly think she would go out again, did he? But once again, Fluffy's words were ignored and Caleb was already walking away.

She sighed and lid down, digging into the remains of the bird. Get something else. why must the day of a small dog be so much work? The Spaniel thought. No matter. If another 'snack' is what he wants, I shall get it. She nodded her head quickly as if talking to someone else and finished her meal. She felt uncomfortable as the eyes of other dogs pierced through her. No doubt they were waiting for leftovers, which weren't coming anytime soon. At least, not yet. She quickly walked off, feeling the stares of canines slowly leave her body and wander to other things. She sighed and decided to head to the river, after all, fish were easy kills...

xxxxxBustling around as he let his fur get heated by the sun, Marmaduke heard his name get called lowly. He recognized the voice no doubt and immediately put on a stern face and turned around. Standing before him with his tail up for dominance was the alpha, Caleb. Marmaduke bowed his head slowly and put his tail down yet not fully between his legs. Just enough to show respect yet make sure others didn't forget who he was. After all, beta wasn't a rank to take lightly, it was a great honor. Sure, Marmaduke won the battle between the old beta, and sure he thought very well that he deserved the spot. But, Caleb respected the Dane enough to approve of his new rank, and that part was what was really something to be thankful for. Marmaduke nodded a second time, almost as if to thank the alpha for his acceptance of the brute. Once finished, he started to speak, his voice deep and stern but not as much as Caleb's. Good morning alpha. You're looking hungry. No food yet? Marmaduke asked. Although he wasn't the highest ranking dog and still had to respect Caleb, it didn't stop Marmaduke from teasing the alpha every so often. Although, was it sarcasm that sometimes came from his words? It was always so hard to tell, for Marmaduke had always been the overly serious type of dog. Especially when it came to the pack. Looking his alpha, he awaited his commands patiently.

Just standing in the presence of the alpha that fine morning made him proud. Proud that he was finally up there, up in the high rankings with the alpha and healers. In all Marmaduke's time of being in the pack, he had never imagined being beta. Oh, who was he kidding, of course he was! Marmaduke was always awaiting the day he could move up to the spot. Be up there with the big guns. The old beta was an OK size dog. Large, muscular, but no match for a Dane the size of Marmaduke. He was easily beaten and the dog finally got a chance to prove himself to his leader. Being beta definitely had his benefits and there was no doubt in Marmaduke's mind that he wouldn't trade those benefits for the world. He could eat before the others, was trusted more than the others, and participated in alpha duties and conversations more than the others. It was simply a great feeling.

If he wasn't so content with his position, the Dane might have even tried to overthrow the alpha. It was a thought he had always thought about just for the fun of it. Marmaduke was about the size of Caleb, if not a little bigger. He was very strong but so was Caleb, making his imagination run wild about the fight that would be a much equaled match. But Marmaduke respected his alpha too much to do such a thing. These thoughts were simply things to keep him from getting nipped at the heels by the steady jaws of boredom. And, as much as it amused the dog, Caleb was a friend (well as much of one as he'd ever really had) and he wouldn't risk picking a fight. Marmaduke pawed at the ground, already itching to know what he was to do for his alpha.

xxxxxRiley wanted her gone. She could sense it just by the way he talked to her. He wanted the food for himself, to rid of the mutt without a fight and simply get on with their lives. This dog didn't possibly think she would give up that easily, right? Surely not, this dog had to be much smarter than that, some dogs would get deeply offended by the fact that they were forced to leave, she would know. She looked up from her meal that she had continued eating and blinked a few times. Surely you didn't think I was leaving anytime soon. Did you? She asked with a tilt of her head, Because I was planning on staying a while to finish my meal. She returned to her meal, although kept her eyes on the male with quick side glances. Every now and then he would look at her scars, making her shift awkwardly. Quickly though, he turned away, proving that he had met a 'scar shy' dog before.

She looked up again, that one right there, She said, gesturing to the one Riley had looked at, It came from a killer after I came too close to their pond. Hard to resist fresh water nowadays. She sighed. She remembered the day like it was yesterday. A small, meek young mutt creeping over to a small pond filled with water, only to get a jaw of a large German shepherd to the side. Iris hadn't had the tender skin heal for weeks, and even after that, got the scars to prove it. She eyed the male. Might as well start conversation if you were awkwardly in a meat shop with another fellow canine. She pawed the ground again, any scars that you remember well. Are proud of maybe? Riley didn't exactly look like the kind of dog that picked fights, and the way he talked to Iris before proved that. He seemed more like the talk it out stray. One that wasn't big on risking everything he loved on his fighting skills. The thing that he loves being his life. Although, he did have a few scars, and didn't exactly look like he was well groomed. None of the strays did after the big growl. She guessed that he was part of a few small fights, nothing serious though.

Iris looked at her own wounds and then back at Riley, awaiting an answer about the question she had asked. Hopefully he didn't try to act stubborn and not answer her question. She hated when strays were stubborn and selfish, it never helped anyone.

Yoshi decided he might want to try to catch up to the rest of the patrol dogs if they had already left without him. He wagged his tail put on a smile and then went on his way out of his fellow pack members sight into their territory. He didn't want to go to fast since he had a scar on his right front paw from glass. It tended to open up when he moved that paw too much. Like if he ran for a very long time, that had happened to him once. He had run so much around the territory that by the time he was done his paw's scar opened up and his paw seemed to be covered in blood. Not a giant coat of blood, it just gave a red tint to his silver brindle fur. He had gotten a couple cuts along his back from barbed wire. That was before he joined the pack, he had stolen some dog's food. That dog chased him for awhile. He only escaped because he had found a hole under a wire fence. He had gotten stuck at first but he was in such a hurry that he had gotten multiple cuts along his back. They weren't that deep though which was good. He thought they might leave a scar but he didn't know, hopefully they didn't. He didn't think scars were that cool, they sometimes tell the stupidity of some animals. He didn't notice but his surroundings started to change. Before he noticed the grass under his feet turned to concrete and his surroundings were the remnants of old buildings. He finally stopped to notice his surroundings, he had run straight to the city. His eyes scanned his surroundings. Broken down buildings, everything was just as rugged as it always was. Hopefully there wasn't any broken glass laying around from the windows of the buildings that crumbled. Glass was hard to get out, it could get stuck as small shards. Yoshi noticed a scent differentiating itself from the rest of the smell of dust and death. He didn't wait long before heading off towards the smell. It smelled like a dog but then again his nose could be wrong, it has before. He stopped for a second and sniffed again, definitely a dog. Hopefully the dog wasn't crazy from the polluted water, those dogs were always scary. They always are mad if they drink the water, well that or dead. He noticed the smell coming from the alley and crouched down slightly in case he had to dodge a lunge. He peeked down the alleyway and noticed a dog, they didn't look crazy. Then again he could be fooled, maybe they were crazy. He straightened up and wagged his tail slightly. Friendliness always seemed to get him out of situations. Well, except when he dealt with the dogs who couldn't be swayed. Those sad dogs seemed to trust no one. Such a sad life to live, thinking every single dog will cut you open while you sleep just to get a small morsel. It was no way to live! "Hello there! Are you crazy, wait what am I saying, you wouldn't answer if you were. Probably. Well....Hi!" He said with a wag of his tail. He tried to not look threatening which was easy to do with such a playful nature. Hopefully this dog was fond of dogs otherwise he might have to fight them. He hated doing that though, hurting others was a thing for the untrusting. Trust was a big part in his life, he was in a pack of course. He relied on the hunters to hunt and the alpha to lead. Not to mention he relied on the other dogs also doing their jobs.

beast was patrolling the areas around the territory. His head hung low to the ground in case he picked up any scents of strays. His tail didn't wag, it didn't cower between his legs, it didn't stand straight up, it just hung. his 20lb coat of fur was covered in fur and he was sweltering. his tongue hung out as he attempted to pant himself down to a decent temperature but all he really wanted was to be covered in cold water. he started walking back towards the territory, his head raising up. he had been awake for hours. sometimes he wished he was back with his old humans due to the grooming, and the shaving of his fur in the summertime, but those were the old days. he had become accustomed to living in constant sweltering heat, and until the winter came, he was going to be uncomfortable. it's been like that for so long that he had completely ignored the heat. he was hungry but not starving so he ignored the growling in his stomach.

as he came into view of the territory he walked towards the river, once there he sat at the edge of the river before dunking his head in, the cool refreshing water cascaded over his head and halfway down his chest. he quickly dove in and made sure he was completely soaked before getting out, letting the water pour off his thick coat. he didnt bother shaking off but he laid by the river, watching around it just in case. he didnt know what he would see but he hoped he didn't see any strays. the water soaked fur felt a lot better and it brought his body temp down a lot. after five minutes he got up and shook himself off, his now damp fur keeping him cooled. he started walking back from the lake, his head held low again.

Huffing, the fae quickly scampered close to the dog of the alley. She looked at him hesitantly and noticed he was pale gray dog... or for what she could see. Her deep brown eyes scanned his form. Obviously not a stray, too well-fed. A curled tail, long snout, and pointy ears. Shiba Inu, definitely, or a husky mix, Mel wouldn't know unless she knew the canine. Their pelt looked marbled and dappled with white, and he seemed to be alert and constantly aware but generoud, his chocolaty orbs glancing back and forth. Prying her eyes off the silver hound, she considered whether fighting, which she's lose at, or making a run for it. He seemed rather short for a dog like himself, but very strong from the normal, but inviting appearance.
`Maybe they're nice. Hopefully. But... What if they trick me and injure me? Shut up, Mel, you can take it. But... What if I can't? What if he rips my throat out? He won't. He seems nice!` Two parts of her mind contemplated over occurrences well known to happen. She backed into the shade provided by piled debris on the structures on either side. When Melani began arguing in her mind, she noticed the temperature had changed since she chased the scrawny yet quick raccoon. A scratch close by startled her and caused her to flinch, and she turned around to face the darkness behind her, the Inu behind her pretty much not really a problem anymore. The aussie didn't notice a portion of her nub tail was visible outside the alley until she heard nothing but city surroundings, situating herself safely in the passageway.
    Skrch.
There it was. It sounded like something climbing, or tiptoeing on loose asphalt. Little dots glinted in the shadows, and then a little gray body peered out, a dark gray raccoon; the one from before. She growled, sending it off down the backstreet, heading right into the silver Shiba Inu she had began to slightly ignore. With a slick movement, she swiped it away.
``So- sorry. I'm not a brutal dog, no, not crazy. You're a pack dog though, right?`` Mel asked, acting like the raccoon didn't exist.

[ "gunther and dodge" ] [ post two. ]

Postby deftonesly » Thu Jul 07, 2016 8:50 pm

        G U N T H E R──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
        ( age: five years ) . ( breed: gsp ) . ( rank: stray ) . ( location: green meadow ) . ( tagged: dodge, chase, lexie ) . ( words: 1682 )
        ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
indent it took everything in gunther not to lurch forward and clobber dodge as the younger german shorthaired pointer got to his paws, reluctantly, and padded forward with his head down. and he found himself almost losing all control and snapping when dodge, plaintively and sassily, said from where he was hanging his head a few strides away, "don't call me that. i'm not your son. i'm not a female in need of defending, you know, gunther, i am grown." gunther stiffened and his back and docked tail went rigid as dodge lifted his head and muzzle up. there was a defiant light in his hazel eyes, and he was holding himself differently, keeping his posture more erect and formal. was the younger dog.. challenging his authority? was he trying to look more mature? what had brought this change on? half-pleased that his scolding and teachings were, maybe, finally catching on in the dog's head, and half-furious for the fact that dodge had missed his cue and almost cost them breakfast, gunther was opening his mouth to bark out a reply when dodge interjected, going on. "look, i'm sorry for not going after the stupid rabbit, all right? if i'd known how much it meant to you, maybe i would've, but you seemed to have handled things perfectly fine to me." dodge tilted his head to the side, and gunther's neck fur bristled at his sudden rational approach; usually he was the rational one. what game was his brother playing now?

indent gunther hesitated, lips twitching as if they were urging to peel back and reveal glinting teeth, and his upper body quivering softly. he wasn't about to let his anger go; it was the only thing keeping him tethered to not losing it with the smaller dog before him. when he was positive that dodge wasn't going to interrupt him again, the white-flecked pointer growled, harshly, "you claim that you're an adult, yet you sure aren't acting like one." his gaze grew sharper and colder, his expression darker, and his face wrinkled as he frowned. to counteract dodge's little display of dominance, the older canine drew himself up onto the balls of his feet and barked right in his brother's face, absolutely unafraid to spit if it took showing who was in charge. "an adult would have the sense to not chase their stumpy little tail while a fellow adult is stalking. an adult would have the sense not to wander off constantly, and have the sense to not chatter their superior's ears off every chance they get and every time they see something as insignificant as a blade of grass, son. so don't even try to play the mature card on me, because i know exactly what you are: and that is a disrespectful child that really needs to learn his place, else it'll be shown to him."

indent he grunted, snuffing hot air into his brother's thin face and enlarged eyes. his eyes narrowed triumphantly; he'd rendered dodge incapable of speaking with his words of truth. and though it. . deep down. . hurt him to see the other dog so put-off, he ignored the guilty twisting of his gut. he woofed, "now, remember what i just said and remember it well. i don't want you to speak another word until we get back to our makeshift den. grab the rabbit and let's get going." his amber eyes darted upward briefly to examine the sky and decipher the time of day - not a cloud was to be seen, and the sun continued to blaze on and scorch the earth in its full glory - before returning to dodge, who was studying his forepaws as if they were the most interesting thing in the world. "we've wasted too much time here anyway, and the pack dogs could be here any moment with the racket you made-"

indent he'd been bowing in a stretch to loosen up his legs before setting off, still speaking as he did so, but he shut his jaws quickly as a familiar scent met his nose. dodge had obediently picked up the rabbit as gunther had been talking, and was now looking at his older brother curiously, his hazel eyes round with fear and concern. of course, gunther realized, he probably couldn't smell what he smelled - pack dogs - through the scent of the rabbit and its blood. so when dodge asked, "gun? what do you smell? what do you hear?" after setting down the rabbit, gunther was prepared and didn't snap at him. with his intense amber eyes transfixed on where a thicket of grass was gently quivering and where the pack dog's - dogs', because he smelled more than one - odor was emanating, he murmured, not taking his eyes off of the thicket. "dodge. it's the pack dogs. they've come to their senses and found us at last." he swung his head back around to face his brother as the rustling in the grassy thicket grew louder and the scent of the other dogs grew stronger. he hissed, "get ready to take that rabbit and run as fast as you possibly can on my signal. i will have to find you later, as i'll be staying here to hold them off for you to escape." he paused. "just do what you do best: run. and don't stop."

indent dodge looked ready to protest, and a small, whimpering "no!" escaped from his throat, but then two dogs burst into the open a few tail-length's away from the brothers, and the pup canned it. gunther shot him a warning glance, and mouthed, "be ready," before he pivoted back and away from the younger german shorthaired pointer to face the two arrivals that had presented themselves like surprise gifts: one a retriever, the other a collie of some sort. both of them were gifts that gunther couldn't say that he wanted. the retriever, a beautiful, long-furred thing that quickly caught gunther's eye not because of her beauty, but because of the confidence and self-assurance that he saw in her, stepped forward first without hesitation. her black-and-white comrade - too cowardly, gunther presumed, to come very close - stayed behind her, growling softly all the while as he let his partner do the talking. "what are you doing here?" the female asked him, voice calm, polite. . but wary. the pointer had no doubt that she would attack if he made a move; he could tell my the tension in her muscles and the look in her eyes. he suspected that he was going to like the lass; she seemed to be a lot like him, on some levels, he concluded as he sized her up. but, unfortunately, that means nothing and doesn't make this situation better. she and her friend just caught us stealing their prey, and times are already rough between our worlds: the world of the strays, and the world of the group dogs. even though this retriever intrigues me (a lot more than the collie behind her does), if i had to choose between dodge and a still-warm rabbit and chattering, i would choose my family and my food any day.

indent he made a conscious effort to wrench his gaze away from her and direct his focus to the dog that backed her up. gunther made sure to stare at the collie for longer than one would deem necessary, his amber eyes bleak and cold and saying: "watch who you growl at, boy." once he was sure that he'd spooked the younger brute, he faced the retriever again with a nod of his head. "morning, miss." the greeting was sincere, but a little on the brusque side. he needed to get dodge out of here with the rabbit as fast as possible. he was confident that his younger brother could outrun the retriever, but the collie? maybe not. collies were trained to protect flocks of sheep from wolves, which could outrun any of them, and he knew that it was wise to assume the worst of the black-and-white: that he had been raised to kill wolves and to protect at all costs what was his. gunther decided to attack him first when he shot dodge the signal. "oh, we're just simple strays, and we were about to be on our way. now, if you'll be kind enough to excuse us..?"

indent the dark-furred, intense-looking male waggled his little stump of a tail: the signal was being displayed. not a heartbeat later, there was a pounding of paws, a whimper of goodbye, and then a dark shape streaking across the green meadow out of the corner of gunther's eye. . . with the limp form of a rabbit in its jaws. gunther watched his brother leap across the meadow to the line of trees far in the distance; he admired the speed that he had. . the precision with which he moved and angled his paws and shoulders to carry him just so. . . the power and muscle under his sleek, thin fur. if there is one thing that that dog is good at, it's being a runner. he switched his gaze back to the retriever and collie, a growl already formulating in his throat. without further hesitation, the tall, lanky pointer crouched slightly, and, before both dogs could wake up and realize what had just happened, he was barreling into the collie. as he pinned him by the throat against the earth, one paw splayed against his neck and the other on his violently jerking torso, gunther looked up at the retriever. the smallest of smiles - what was this? a smile? unheard of from the pointer! - graced his lips. he said to her, "i don't fancy harming females, you know. i'm not that type of ruffian, and, besides, i actually like you, fae. but your friend here? i'm going to have a lot of fun with." in a flash, his lean head was swirled back to the collie, whom was still bucking and kicking beneath him in feeble attempts to free himself. gunther bared his teeth, and, snarling, removed his paw from the dog's throat and put his teeth in its place.

        ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
indent it had all happened so fast. dodge had been a fool to think for one second that he could try to act more. . his age around gunther in the first place. had been a fool to try to get on gunther's level and try to talk and see things from his perspective. the wise, older male had seen right through his façade, and had crushed the mask of calmness and rationality that dodge had slapped onto his face in a matter of seconds. and now, after a brief lecture on - guess what? - his foolishness and immaturity (two things he was only too aware of), the pack dogs were upon them, apparently. dodge had been unable to smell their approach with the smell of the rabbit clogging his nostrils, but somehow gunther, the killer of the rabbit itself, had detected the "group canines". before dodge could even fully react to this new information that his brother was sharing - about how gunther wanted him to take the rabbit, wanted to sacrifice his own life in order to give dodge a meal - two pack dogs came bounding out into the open to face them.

indent another gurgling "no!" was getting ready to come out of his maw at his brother's mouthed words, but the word died in his throat when he saw a red-brown retriever - he swore he'd never seen a dog so stunning before in his life - and a not-so-stunning collie slide from the meadow's tall grasses. his ears perked in slight interest as he eyed the blue-eyed fae, and his tail started to subconsciously wag at the sight of her, but she didn't even notice him. the retriever only had eyes for the rabbit in his jaws - which he'd snatched up seconds before she and her pal had arrived - and also. . . (though dodge couldn't even believe it) eyes for gunther. she removed her attention from the dead rabbit and locked eyes with gunther as the german shorthaired pointer spoke, words calm and smooth and well-spoken. the slightest bit of jealousy stirred in dodge's chest (deep down, he knew that it was silly, getting a little ticked off with the fact that a pack dog seemed to be admiring his superior). but that jealousy that threatened to turn him green with envy died a moment later when he caught sight of gunther's gently bobbing tail.

indent as soon as dodge's hazel eyes locked onto that tail, his paws were already in motion before he could even tell them to spin him away and send him off running. whimpering out a goodbye to gunther - would he ever see the pointer again? he had to; he knew that he would, right? - he sped off. he lowered his head so far that the rabbit almost touched the ground, and focused on elongating his legs, lengthening his stride, and breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth. but as he ran, his strength and agility or his desire to eat didn't drive him: it was the thought of gunther and how he was putting so much faith in him that pushed him on. well, if there's one thing that i will never fail to please him at, it's running. not too many dogs can screw that up. he risked a glanced backward as he flew across the green meadow's rolling hills and dashed through or around clumps of wildflowers. he watched gunther watching him for a brief second, and then the older dog twirled around; in the blink of an eye, he was pinning the collie with a paw to the throat. i will do you proud. i have only seen the beginnings of a fatherly love in your eyes on the rarest of occasions, and i have never forgotten those occasions. thinking about his brother allowed him to mentally focus. dodge went harder, faster, than he ever had before. just thinking about the pride in gunther's eyes and the smile on his snout gave him an incredible burst of speed over a particularly large and steep grassy hill. panting hard with froth foaming from his jaws and collecting on the rabbit's now-cold body, he rocketed up its side with his hazel eyes wild and lanky legs a chocolate brown blur.

indent when he had reached its summit, he, once more, risked a glance behind him. his pelt was breaking out into a sweat - it had salty white streaks along it - and he was huffing uncontrollably. he was in the clear; none of the pack dogs had chose to give chase and pursue him yet. there gunther was, below him, looking akin to an ant in the center of the meadow, and there was that poor collie, whom now had his brother's fangs in his throat, from what dodge could make out from the fair distance away. dodge smirked to himself around the rabbit; he was sweaty and drooling all over their meal and was more than a little frightened for gunther, but all in all, he knew that the pointer could handle himself. that both of them could, because there was no way in doggy heaven or earth that the retriever or the collie could catch him now. that, tonight, when they relocated and found a new makeshift den, their bellies would at long last be full. he tightened his grip on the rabbit, but not enough to break any skin, and then began running again, this time a tad bit slower now that he had escaped. still, he went at a fast jog down the hill and across the remainder of the meadow, all the while thinking: do gunther proud, do gunther proud. i will do whatever it takes to make you look down on me with pride and love. especially after being starved of it from you for so long.

xxxgender. brute x age. seven years x rank. alpha x tagged. marmaduke, dodge. x word count. 1,029

the alpha male was pleased to see the other brute give his respect and dipped his head ever so slightly to return it. no matter how much he disliked speaking with his packmates, marmaduke would always be one of the dogs that he could at least stand being around. he was noble and brave, and unlike the other dogs that swelled his ranks. he didn't bother caleb and knew his own boundaries without the wolfdog having to tell him, but most of all he knew where he stood. the dark-hued male heard a hint of amusement in the dane's bark, "good morning alpha. you're looking hungry. no food yet?" caleb grunted with slight annoyance, he may like the male a bit but he didn't favor his teasing words. the tall brindle coated brute gazed at him patiently, pride radiating from his pelt as he stood in front of the alpha male. "don't flatter yourself too much, marmaduke." he woofed brusquely with a hint of humor hidden deep in his own amber eyes. "I've eaten a snack." he added on with slight displeasure, not happy about his empty stomach.

he couldn't be completely unhappy, however, it wasn't like he was starving. his pack made sure of that, no, he made sure of it. without hunting, or at least trying to hunt, the pack would go hungry and would grow weak, which was not ideal under the current situation. the pack couldn't afford to fall back on the food chain, especially with their enemies territory bordering their own. there was always competition for food between the two large groups, but unfortunately it seemed as though the killer group was always a paw step ahead. caleb growled lowly at the thought of the sleek furred shepherds that roamed the gated yard, always watching and always waiting for a chance to show their dominance. I guess there is one thing that I got from my mother, determination. except, i'm determined to destroy her beloved family! the brute's ear twitched as he was brought back to the present, with marmaduke looking down at him thoughtfully. caleb got a weird feeling from his gaze, almost as if he was sizing the alpha up. immediately, he rose to his full height and narrowed his eyes slightly, feeling a bit challenged by his second-in-command. he only felt reassured when the look died from the great dane's dark brown orbs, "why don't we go outside of camp? I need to have a word with you." he said bluntly, swinging his large head to where the camp exit was located. with a sweep of his tail, he beckoned the long-legged dog to follow him.

out in the forest the birds chattered loudly, causing the brute to feel a spark of annoyance. "they just never shut up..." he grumbled to himself while ducking underneath a low hanging branch. the brute led marmaduke away from the heart of the territory, closer to the edge of the territory that bordered the meadows and then the city. the wolf hybrid gave a sniff of disapproval at the sight over the rolling hills. off in the distance he could make out the outline of the tall buildings that marked the large city grounds, they looked tiny from where he stood now but he knew that they were much bigger up close. "I've been noticing that there are stray scents showing up on the territory, do you know about this?" he asked curiously, wanting to know if there was something that he needed to know.

at night caleb often slipped out of camp and into the woods to think by himself without the eyes of his packmates on his ebony pelt. it was his way of reassuring himself that not everything was lost after the big growl hit, there was still hope for his pack. the previous nights he had been able to faintly detect the nauseating smell of a stray on his territory, which made his pelt prickle uneasily. there wasn't any exception for any unwelcome dog on his land and he was determined to get to the bottom of the situation. caleb growled as he remembered the scent, it was reeking with youth and excitement, he remembered it like it was right in front of him. but wait, caleb hadn't been in this area when he had smelled the young brute so why did he still smell it? of course! the scent here was much fresher, almost like he was right on the other side of the undergrowth. the wolfdog growled and bared his teeth, itching for a confrontation with the trespasser. he glanced back at marmaduke, giving him a signal that something was up by pointing his muzzle ahead. his amber eyes narrowed as he braced himself, and then leaped through the bush. on the other side, he collided with the much small body of a youthful pointer dog, inside his jaws was a rabbit.

anger coursed through the brute as he stared into the male's hazel eyes, "how dare you trespass on my territory!" he snarled furiously with his eyes blazing as he kept the much smaller to the ground with his outstretched paws. he felt satisfied to see the canine looking back at him through wide, scared eyes. by now, caleb had completely forgotten about marmaduke behind him, his eyes were completely set on the wriggling frame underneath his large jet black paws. he pressed down a bit harder and dug his claws into the dog's brown and white speckled chest. "do you think it's okay to eat someone else's prey, mutt? did you think you could get away with your crime?" he growled deeply, lifted his head from the young canine to look at his deputy. "looks like we have a prisoner, a thief, on our paws, marmaduke." he said harshly. "i can smell another one too, on this..." he paused and shoved his muzzle in the struggling dogs face, "ones fur, and on the rabbit as well." he kicked the dead creatures body away with a paw. the brute's eyes gleamed angrily while also showing his eagerness, finally! a reason for him to protect and defend his territory!

xxxgender. fae x age. four years x rank. hunter x tagged. chase, gunther, dodge. x word count. 1,135

there was no way of getting out of the situation now. she had already challenged the two strays, which would come across as danger in their eyes. any sign of nervousness or wariness would be seen as weakness, which was something that the two pack dogs could not afford. the retriever could hear a smacking sound as the largest of the brutes snapped his jaws shut, for a moment lexie could imagine the other canine's jaws clamping around her own limb or even her neck which sent a shiver through her body. don't be silly, lex! you have your own set of teeth to cause damage with as well. the light brown fae bared her teeth in a silent threat; she wasn't about to let these two trespassers think that they were going to get away with this! remember your training! a tiny voice in her mind reminding her of the countless hours that she had spent training with the alpha when she first joined the lost pack.

"you must be quicker!" the alpha's snarl echoed around the camp clearing as his newly found pack members squared up against one another, their eyes glittering in the moonlit clearing. lexie huffed loudly with a glance towards the ghostly figure watching overhead. he always looks like a phantom in the night... she thought to herself, forgetting the dog on the opposite side of her. almost a split second later a large force slammed into her side, driving all of the breath out of her body. the fae landed on her flank with a thump, a gasp escaping her maw. she glanced up to see her opponent staring at her through glinting eyes, a look of pride hidden deep within their golden depths. a groan escaped her as she tried to rise to her paws only to be slammed back onto the ground. a sharp pain shot through her chest and she gazed up, blurry-eyed, into the striking amber orbs that belonged to none other than her alpha. she was shocked to feel his strength rippling beneath his ebony pelt as his paw pressed down on her white chest, making it nearly impossible to breath correctly. "you think you're going to win by staring off into space, stray?" he sneered, baring his yellow stained teeth and glaring at her through narrowed eyes. "what do you think your doing? wishing your way back to your warm bed? think again!" his voice rose to an angry yowl and for the first time ever, lexie feared that the large brute was going to hurt her... or worse. "n-no, of course n-not. I was j-just..." the fae stuttered while trying to shy away from his sharp jaws and lolling tongue. "i didn't think so! now get up, fae. you have work to do!" he snarled while lifted his large paw from her chest, allowing her to catch her breath briefly. "again. this time though, pay attention! for the love of the earth-dog above!"

the memory faded from the female's mind as she stared at the brute before her. this time, she would be ready. lexie allowed her ocean blue eyes to flicker from one male to the other, noting that the two dogs were obviously close. she could tell by the eager look in the younger male's hazel eyes as he gazed up at his peer. like a trainee would do to his mentor. she noted silently, allowing her blue gaze to rest on the older canine. she studied his build once more, bringing in as much information about him as she could by just looking at him. his frame was muscular and she could see that he was fairly well fed, she could see his orange color around his dark brown neck. he looks to me like a hunting dog. she thought curiously, glancing down at the rabbit that now lay at the younger male's paws. yes, definitely a hunting dog. she blinked thoughtfully, hearing her packmate's low growl behind her. she breathed in deeply, her sides expanding as her lungs enlarged to let in the air to her body. lexie growled in response to the quiet atmosphere, taking a small step forward. she was about to repeat her question once more, seeing as if the two brutes in front of her were too busy looking at each other to answer her inquiry, but instead the larger chocolate brown male spoke up. "morning miss." he greeted calmly after sending an icy glare at her comrade through his amber eyes, which made Lexie's hackles raise. she wasn't looking for no friendly conversation, she was only interested in the lifeless body of the hare between his companions jaws. "oh, we're just simple strays, and we were about to be on our way. now, if you'll be kind enough to excuse us...?" a bad feeling crept alone Lexie's spine as she listened to his distracted woof. wait! what was that? a very simple flick of the tail sent the brute's younger companion fleeing with the dust kicking up behind him. lexie snarled and barked loudly, glaring furiously at the remaining pointer.

before the fae could fully make sense of what was going on, the stray launched himself forward and bowled over chase. lexie gave a yelp of surprise, her attention brought back from the disappearing rump of the pup over the hillside. a grin-like smile formed across the brute's brown muzzle, making lex fill with a bit of fear. "i don't fancy harming females, you know. i'm not that type of ruffian, and, besides, i actually like you, fae. but your friend here? i'm going to have a lot of fun with." she couldn't hide the shock that filled her bright blue eyes as she stared down at the two, did he just say that he liked her? a tiny unknown feeling flitted through her chest before she drove it away. no! help him! she almost screamed out loud. no matter how handsome or charming the male appeared, he now had his sharp teeth bared across her packmates exposed neck. "not if I can help it, you're not!" she snarled, lunging forward with her jaws parted to bite down on his leg. through the adrenaline and the shock, the female wasn't really sure if her jaws had made her mark but at least she had managed to capture his attention. with all of her strength, the slightly smaller dog barreled into his side, knocking him sideways and away from her packmate. "nice try, stray!" she growled, standing next to chase's white and black body with a growl rumbling deep in her throat. she risked a glance sideways to where the brute's friend had disappeared amongst the treeline, but the truth was, the rabbit was the last thing on her mind.

there was no doubt in his mind that his words had caused the female to become even more guarded. he noted that she seemed genuinely curious about why he had asked such a question, but he didn't feel like speaking at the moment. instead, he pondered his options. there was a chance that if he fought the female he could win, and then he would have the entire shop to himself for at least a short while. though if he chose to defend his prize he risked getting hurt which was a possible death sentence for any stray, not to mention the conditions that he would be fighting in were less than ideal. riley gazed around the shop, looking for any possible area where it would be clear. to his dismay, however, he was greeted with the site of tables and chairs knocked over, tight spaces, and slippery tile floor. the dane mix huffed in disappointment, narrowing his eyes ever so slightly as he noticed that it was getting darker in the lowly lit room. a cloud must be passing over... that storm will be here soon. he thought to himself with a flick of an ear. he had never favored storms but he was especially worried about this one... what if it was just like the big growl? he hadn't even gotten rid of the ringing sound that was still in his ears from then!

the male eyed the female carefully, looking for any sudden movements or changes in mood. "surely you didn't think I was leaving anytime soon. did you? because I was planning on staying a while to finish my meal." she spoke with an edge to her voice, giving away her curiosity. he felt his heart drop in his chest and his stomach felt like it possessed a large stone inside. "of course, after all you found the meal. didn't you?" he narrowed his eyes as he looked at her black pelted frame. she moved over slowly and began to eat once more, leaving riley sitting in the middle of the floor by himself. he was unsure of the fae, wondering if he should really press her to leave. what if she really needed the food? could he really drive her away? he let out a tired sigh and licked his lips in boredom. at least he didn't need to make the decision that moment, he noticed as she pointed her white flecked muzzle to a large scar on her side. " it came from a killer after I came too close to their pond. hard to resist fresh water nowadays." she said with a sigh as memories flickered in her eyes. "i'm sure it hurt." he muttered somewhat quietly but quacking realized how rude that he sounded. "i mean, it looks like a nasty bite. those dogs are nothing more than oversized dachshunds if you ask me, they are always looking for ways to prove their strength but never use anything other than their teeth. they must be weakened by something, somehow." he said more clearly, hoping that he had made up for his insincere comment before then.

the brute felt himself begin to relax slightly as they chatted. he was starting to feel more comfortable and at home in the little meat shop. oh sure, because i know what a home is like, right? he scoffed silently at himself while looking over to the fae close by. she was still eating her choice of the meats, making his stomach growl with hunger. no use in going hungry. he thought before rising to his paws and reaching forward to grab his own chunk of meat. he settled down in a corner, still keeping one eye on the ebony and white canine. after a while of silence, she spoke again. "any scars that you remember well. are proud of maybe?" her question shocked him slightly, but he wasn't about to ignore her. "oh...no not really. I would much rather keep out of confrontation if I can help it." he spoke calmly, determined to keep his strategy to himself, but then again what harm would it cause to tell a little story? "you see this one here?" he asked while touching his nose to his chest, where a long scar ran from his neck down to his leg. "i got this from a pack dog, actually. an ugly brute he was too... he looked like some kind of a wolf, except he had german shepherd markings!" he explained the odd color of the dog with a thoughtful look in his eyes, "i think he must have been the packs alpha or beta, because he was so bossy. he was constantly snapping at his packmates while he held me down. if it weren't for my quick thinking, the brute would have killed me right there! but I talked one of his comrades into feeling bad for me, and after some convincing he let me go." he said with a small flash of amusement in his brown eyes. "of course, he didn't let me escape without a reminder." he added on while looking at his chest once more. he looked up at the fae while chewing a chunk of the meat in his mouth, realizing that he was actually enjoying the company that the other canine provided. how could he possibly deny her shelter and food? he knew deep in his heart that he couldn't ever be that cruel, especially when she didn't seem too keen on confrontation either. "so... where are you from? were you a leash dog before the big growl?" he inquired, obviously trying to make the conversation last longer. with the storm on the way, there wouldn't be any time to leave and search for shelter in time. looks like we're both stuck! he thought with an uneasy feeling. even though he enjoyed the kind fae's company he wasn't sure about having to stay in the same building as her, what if he couldn't trust her?

If only the border collie had been paying more attention, he may have been able to jump out of the way when the stray attacked him. Instead, Chase's attention had flickered briefly to the other dog, who had begun to run away. Though his attention was only off the male who remained for a few, short seconds, it was enough for him to end up being knocked over by the stronger dog, his head thumping on the ground and causing the canine's vision to blur. Blinking his eyes a few times, he wriggled underneath the dog's paws, which were firmly pinning him to the ground. Chase knew he had no chance of escaping: the pointer was stronger than him, and he had now lost his main advantage, agility. Chase could dodge attacks fairly easily, but had allowed his attention to drift when he should have been focusing on the older male.

After a few attempts to break free, the collie finally laid still, realizing his attempts to push the other dog off were pointless, and he'd have to think of another way to escape. A low growl rumbled from Chase's throat as the pointer spoke, replacing the large paw on his throat with a set of sharp fangs. Using his back legs, Chase kicked out at the dog's belly, hoping to at least leave a mark on the pointer's flesh. He let out another growl, meeting the other canine's amber eyes. When Lexie barreled into the side of the pointer, he was relieved to find that the stray's fangs were no longer hovering dangerously close to his neck. Chase almost let out a sigh of relief, though his brief moment of solace was soon destroyed when an unbearable pain shot through his leg.

The pointer, while being pushed off of him, had managed to grab hold of one of Chase's leg, sinking his fangs into the flesh. While this on it's own might not have been all that bad, the pointer fell sideways, still with the Border Collie's leg clamped in his jaws, and with a crisp snap, a searing pain shot up his leg and through his whole body. The hunter's leg was broken.

Holding back a yelp, Chase quickly scrambled to his paws, letting his weight rest on his three good legs while the fourth hung limply just above the ground. Things weren't going to well for the hunters, though the other dog was now outnumbered. Chase snarled at the stray, refusing to show any weakness despite the agony of his legs and the fact that his vision hadn't completely recovered after the sudden impact with the ground.

xxxxxThe spaniel's head popped up quickly as she heard Caleb start to eat. By
his hungry looking demeanor, she knew that a dog the size of this one wasn't likely to leave leftovers from a tiny, puny bird.

She sighed and decided to head to the river, after all, fish were easy kills...

xxxxxMarmaduke's slight, almost invisible smile soon turned back to it's serious expression when Caleb responded, Don't flatter yourself too much Marmaduke. Marmaduke always had a way of making other dogs put him back into his place. It was always accidental and he never really meant to seem menacing, But I guess when your bigger than most dogs, they seem to trust you less. He thought to himself. He nodded when Caleb clarified he had a 'snack' and instantly thought about the smaller dogs. They usually were the ones who brought the small catch, and it wasn't usually as helpful as they would think. He could recall many times small dogs would come to the pack, itching to join, only to be turned down by Caleb and chased away. He almost felt bad for some, the starving or the injured, but who was he to judge. It wasn't as if he had much of a say in the matter, and why would a dog that can't protect nor feed the pack, be good for the pack anyway? Exactly. He thought to himself, They wouldn't. He dwelled on this for a bit while his alpha was deep in his own thoughts, and quickly snapped back to reality when he was spoken to.

Watching his alpha intently, he noticed that Caleb seemed to grow in height. He was raising up to his full height, which made him almost meet the dane's eyes, even when he was at his normal posture. Knowing that the Wolf-dog felt sized up, Marmaduke quickly showed some curtsey and shrunk down, his tail slightly between his legs to show that he meant no harm whatsoever. With his posture as low and small looking as it could be, he seemed quite smaller and weaker than his alpha before him. This being a good thing, for it was better to act small in front of the powerful wolf-dog than to even dare raise to full height. Cursing himself slightly for even suggesting sizing Caleb up, he listened as he spoke. Why don't we go outside of camp? I need to have a word with you. At this, Marmaduke's ears shot up with the idea of adventuring out of the cramped camp Marmaduke hardly ever got to leave. He was tempted to let out an excited bark but knew that this pup-like gesture wouldn't earn a good reputation from such a hard and serious beta. He nodded his head and stood to walk comfortably, Yes alpha. I'll gladly follow. He started to walk, It has been a while since I've left Camp. And with that, he followed the alpha into the cluster of trees, not quite beside him but still close enough to discuss the matters at hand.

As he walked, Marmaduke remembered how him and his boy would always take walks together, something he just loved to do. He recalled one time very well, a memory from when he was still young, and playful as ever. 'Dukie? You wanna go for a walk!' His boy had yelled to him, the sound of his leash jingling in the small boy's hand. You can tell that he's almost as excited as his dog to go and get some fresh air. In a heartbeat, the sound of loud, barreling paws is heard from upstairs. They charge through the hallway and race down the stairs, in a flash, there's Marmaduke, jumping up and whining gleefully at the word 'walk'. He scrapes the leash impatiently but is careful not to bowl the boy over, something he was taught never to do. As the collar is put around his neck, the boy calls his mother to let her know he is going. With a quick reminder not to cross any roads, the boy and his dog are gone in a flash. No one dares to lay a finger on Marmaduke or his boy, not with him there. They are happy as can be, running up and down the streets like their insane. It's perfect... it was all perfect... That was one of the last walks he had taken with his boy, the one where he had fallen down and scraped his knee, and Marmaduke had sat there with him until he was spotted by a fellow neighbour and brought back home. It was all very fun, except for the scrape of course, and they both had loved every minute of it, too bad things would never be like that any more. Marmaduke knew that someday he would find his boy again, and they would finally be reacquainted. He would never lose hope...

They just never shut up... Marmaduke looked up, caught off guard as he was hauled out of his thoughts. It wasn't until he registered what his alpha was talking about that he grunted in response. They can be quite annoying. He agreed as he looked up at the trees. It was always so hard to spot the birds up there, but it was no doubt they were. Nestled up there, constantly chirping, a 12 hour shift of being a complete nuisance. He smirked at this, but quickly remained straight faced when his alpha continued on again. This time with nothing at all about the birds, completely ignoring them and moving on. I've been noticing that there are stray scents showing up on the territory, do you know about this? He asked, almost as if Marmaduke might have been part of the scent trails showing up in the first place. Slightly offended by Caleb thinking he would do such a thing, yet understanding that he would be protective of his pack, the brute shook his head with wide eyes. Of course not alpha, I don't hate strays too much, but I would never tolerate one trespassing. He spoke calmly and slow, to make sure he didn't come across as a liar or anything. He knew too well that if you sounded as if you were lying, no one would ever believe you were telling the truth.

He was about to continue that he hadn't seen anything, when Caleb growled and bared his teeth at the bushes in front of them. Confusion coursed through Marmaduke's veins as he tried to see through the thick leaves. It wasn't until he got a certain 'there's someone here' look from his alpha did he recall the scent of this loner being much too fresh to be from earlier. He crouched down and barred his teeth, ready to defend his alpha, if he needed it that is. Without a second thought Caleb had leapt into the leaves, with Marmaduke close behind. Marmaduke was surprised to see that the mutt on the other side was a Pointer with a rabbit in his jaws. Marmaduke stood tall, his eyes filled with anger but keeping his distance until he was needed. Caleb had him now, it wasn't as if he was escaping now. Looks like we have a prisoner, a thief, on our paws, Marmaduke. Marmaduke growled nodding. He heard Caleb growl as he towered over the terrified dog, sniffing him a moment before looking even more angered than before. I can smell another one on this... one's fur, and on the rabbit as well. This got Marmaduke excited, ready to run and already bouncing on his paws. I can find him alpha. Or would you like help with this thief? He spat, wagging his tail slightly and ready for any excitement that would come.

xxxxxI'm sure it hurt. At this Iris perked her ears, feeling a bit offended of the dog's clear lack of interest. She soon relaxed a bit when Riley explained himself, I mean, it looks like a nasty bite. Those dogs are nothing more than oversized dachshunds if you ask me, they are always looking for ways to prove their strength but never use anything other than their teeth. They must be weakened by something, somehow. At this, Iris laughed softly, amused by the way he had insulted the killers. Iris looked up at the dog, a smile in her eyes yet not forming all the way to her mouth. Yes, they do seem like the cowardice small dog stereotype. I assume they can be beaten my something, if you're correct. She said, hearing a low rumble from far off in the distance. Iris's fur bristled and she hooked herself to the ground for a moment, a few anxious tremors running through her body. She couldn't stand storms! Not one bit. The sound of the thunder always sent shiver down her spine since she was just a young pup, mostly because a storm was what killed her father after a tree fell over on top of him, killing him almost instantly. She never got to see her father's resting place, her mother would never allow her or her siblings to. This just made her mind wander about the gruesome images she was keeping from them, they were all equally terrifying. She hoped that this storm wouldn't be like the Big Growl, not this time.

After her quick and fearful memory clouding her brain, Iris turned toward Riley once more, asking if he was proud of any scars, or had any even. She felt better talking to him than staying there awkwardly, for it was as if she had a temporary companion to keep her company. Something she never had growing up before, not even her siblings were too close to her. She waited a moment before Riley responded, seeming kind of surprised by the question until eventually answering it. Oh... no not really. I would much rather keep out of confrontation if I can help it. He spoke. Iris nodded That's understandable... it's not something most dogs like to get into. She said, a slight glint in her eye knowing that she was completely different, fighting any moment she felt overall threatened. But in the meat shop, she didn't feel threatened at all. She was about to change the subject, knowing it could be a touchy one for some dogs, but Riley spoke first, talking about a scar on his chest that had come from a wolf looking dog with German Shepherd markings. Iris looked at him curiously, Wow. That's weird. I've never seen any dog like that before... She said, eyes slightly wide of the thought of some wolfdog being from the lost pack a pack she certainly didn't have an interest for. They were much too sappy and worked as a team to solve everything out, something Iris wasn't a fan of. She was her own alpha and she liked it that way. I think he must have been the packs alpha or beta, because he was so bossy. He was constantly snapping at his packmates while he held me down. if it weren't for my quick thinking, the brute would have killed me right there! But I talked one of his comrades into feeling bad for me, and after some convincing he let me go." Iris raised an eyebrow at this, impressed by the brute's strategy. So you're more of the talking type? I can respect that. She said with a small approving nod, she bent down her head to take another bit of her meal.

So... where are you from? Were you a leash dog before the big growl? Riley had asked, making Iris almost laugh at loud by the question. Her? A leash dog? Didn't he see all the scars she had formed over the years? Me? Oh no, I've always been a stray. I've never really called a certain part of town my 'home' as you would say. She clarified with a nod of her head, I've just been here and there, never resting on one place. What about you? How long have you been a stray? She asked in return, now sitting down. She looked back to where she had heard thunder and saw storm clouds from outside the shop, she shivered slightly before resuming her attention to Riley. Looks like we'll be here for a while. She thought, hoping the storm didn't last too long, for the decision to stay in the same shelter with a fellow stray could be quite complicated and dangerous, if you didn't play your cards right...
