- XXDarkness still covered the camp when Crowpaw awoke and left his den. He had gone to sleep at sunset the previous day after vigorous training that afternoon, therefore he had woken early and discovered that he couldn't go back to sleep. He suspected, though, that there was some reason he woke up with his nest scattered about around him and perhaps that was why he could not sleep anymore. It was a good thing that he hadn't kicked anyone while having a nightmare; he'd kicked Stagpaw before, and he wasn't sure if the brown tom had quite forgiven him for it. Nevertheless, he was awake before anyone else, as far as he knew. So, with nothing to do, he spent a short while grooming, and then left the den so that he didn't wake his denmates. He then paced about the camp, venturing into the forest for a short way, but then returning when he remembered that apprentices shouldn't go out without a warrior accompanying. His restlessness surprised him, so he reverted to his spot near the gnarled tree where Heatherstar conducted clan meetings. After a moment of daring, where he hopped up onto the fallen tree and sharpened his claws, he settled onto a tuft of soft moss on the ground and collapsed onto his side. He kept his yellow-brown eyes slitted, though he did not fall asleep.
The sleek black and white apprentice waited, head resting on his foreleg, for the sun to come up. Crowpaw stayed there, even when others started waking and going about their business. The sun was peeking up through the towering pine trees of FlameClan territory, just beginning to warm the chilled air, when Heatherstar emerged from her den. At her appearance, Crowpaw lifted his head. He had always thought the leader graceful, though he supposed that everyone thought that of the leader of their clan. The apprentice stole a glance at Jaywind, whom he noticed Heatherstar watching for a brief moment before looking away again. Perhaps not everyone felt the same as he did.
Crowpaw watched as Heatherstar began her walk to the High Tree. His dull yellow-brown eyes followed her, sparkling with interest. He knew that she was going to call a clan meeting, and he wanted to hear what she had to say. He had noticed, when he first went out that morning, that the moon was nearly full. The black and white tom nonchalantly licked a paw and ran it over his whiskers as Heatherstar passed him, but his eyes never left her, even as she ascended the fallen tree and looked over the cats in the clan. Then, he found it nessesary to sit correctly, and not act like a lazy mouse during the meeting, so he pushed himself up. His eyes then went back to Heatherstar, bright and expecting.
