Unable to locate the source of the howl, Ahote eventually gave up and forced himself to move on. It seemed as though Xani couldn't locate it either, and there was simply no time to spend searching the snows on a whim. Giving one last look around, he turned and once again picked up his pace to keep in time with the trail end of the pack. For all his tired aches and the exhaustion from three days hard travel, this movement was doing Ahote some good. The light jog loosened up his stiff muscles, and he soon fell into an easy, loping pace.
Before long, Ahote could hear greetings being shared ahead of them, and he knew they had caught up with Ash and RIver. Head on a swivel as he took a quick head count, he trotted into the midst of the pack with Xani at his side, and turned his attention to Resin. Her short speech was a bit abrupt and to the point, but at the same time, completely appropriate. The honesty of it was reassuring, and he couldn't help but feel proud to have been recognized by her. For the time, he stays silent, simply nodding his agreement to her words.
Soon, everyone is ready to move again and Ahote is grateful, already the short rest has caused him to feel sore and he hopes the movement will loosen him up again. Before they can set off again, he hears another distant howl, and immediately recognizes the voice as belonging to the same wolf as the yip he heard earlier. The ominous warning makes him even more curious about its owner, but before he can bring it up to Resin, it is time to leave and he lets it drop. The pack is paramount, and for now, the straggler must fend for themselves. For the minute or so it takes for the pack to file onward, Ahote pondered the fate of one who must wander alone, and a chill sets into him. Such a fate sounds worse than death than the fighter, and he shakes his head as though to chase the thought from his mind.
The loping pace set as they travel towards the wall fits well with Ahote, and before long he finds himself having to slow his pace as he catches up with the body of the pack. Then, as the light fades and he can see the ice wall looming against the newborn stars, their pace slows again to a frustrating, plodding walk. As anxious as everyone else to reach the safety of the wall, he does his best to simply urge everyone on without snapping at them. As gentle as he is, even he has his limits, and quite simply wants this leg of the journey to be over and done with.
At last, they reach their destination, and without stopping, Ahote runs past the others. He lopes a quick perimeter of the area the pack is bedding down in, looking for all possible routes of attack. He must know that everyone is safe and sound before he will be able to rest. By the time he has finishes, Resin is calling once again, and he pads up with the others, just a few seconds late. As the alpha speaks, he shakes his head, chuckling a bit to himself.
"Ah, good. So someone else did hear that. I was starting to think I as going crazy," he said, sitting back on his haunches to scratch at his ear while the others spoke. While the others seemed fearful for Resin, he knew that there was no way she was going alone, none of the assembled wolves would have any part in such a foolish endeavor.
As ash turns to leave, Ahote calls after him,
"You look after your sister... The last thing I want to do is have to drag my butt out of bed to save your sorry hide." Though his tone was joking, there was a grim thread to his voice. He would watch Grimshaw closely, as would Xani, even if it meant loosing another full night's worth of sleep.
