you read all about superheroes, but you don't hear about the young adults who accompany them. there's a reason for this. a while back, some superheroes became concerned about the public's knowledge of their actions. whether a mission was supposed to be discreet or not, the press would end up catching wind of the plans, inevitably ruining any subtlety the heroes had been hoping for. these superheroes came up with a solution: form a team of young heroes to do the work they could not. this team would stay out of the public eye, yes, and they wouldn't receive any public gratification for their services, but their work would be just as important - if not more so - than anything the big name heroes were doing.
for various reasons - namely, a heated debate among the superhero community about the ethics of bringing young adults into dangerous situations with a perfectly capable hero, never mind letting a team of them undertake sensitive missions with little supervision - this plan never came to fruition. the "sidekicks" faded back into obscurity.
and then - then, a group effort by villains led to the death or permanent injury of many heroes. the superhero community returned to the idea of having a specialized team of young people to carry out covert missions. this would decrease the strain on the remaining heroes. besides, there were rumors that the villains were planning another group attack. after some debate, the majority agreed that this was necessary, and a dozen protégés were selected for the team.
there was just one little issue: the whole "team" aspect. many of the sidekicks worked individually with their mentors. they didn't do teamwork. additionally, only a few of the dozen candidates had met before, and some of them actively loathed one another. the success of the team - and, some of the more dramatic heroes thought, the survival of the human race - depends solely on whether these extraordinary young adults can manage to put aside their disagreements for the greater good. maybe somewhere along the way, they'll realize that they're a force in their own right, not just someone's sidekick.
