Raising a stark eyebrow, Luka looked at Colby while she allowed the smirk to stay persistent on her lips. "You may be taller, but I'm sure I run faster, weasel." she gave a playful wink as well as licking her lips. To be quite fair, she'd love to chase Colby around, outsmart him, and pounce on him. Perhaps even give him a few scratch marks along the way, just for good measure. We all know how cats like to play with their food. However, the small shift in atmosphere around the three shifters suddenly changed when the moose began to act rather bashful, so Luka decided it was best to shut up. Cocking her head to the side rather evidently, the Siamese cat looked up at the moose an raised an eyebrow of curiosity. "Why, moose, no need to become uncomfortable! We're all pals here~" she grinned, standing up on the tip of her toes so she could manage to playfully rub her knuckles against his head. Perhaps she was becoming a bit too personal, but despite waking in a awful mood, she felt rather chipper today -- let alone friendly. "Come on, you're probably the life of the conversation -- compared to 'grumpy gus' over here." Luka then pointed her thumb at the stout she stood right next too, snickering slightly. "So, what exactly were the two of you talking about before lil ole' me came over here?"

he was a bit amazed by the man's sudden change of manner. though james' demeanor still resembled one of a mouse, it became more meek and shy than the previous talkative fool. it's clear to see the moose is uncomfortable with the stoat and siamese cat shifters, but why? he was so animated not only five minutes ago. for some reason, colby's words had hit him to the point he changed attitude, or was it not colby's words, but the girl's?

curiosity takes over the stoat shifter's mind as he wonders what caused the sudden change, and what will cause another?

colby's figure follows james' pose unconsciously, but in a power manner, not meek like the moose's. the boy's hands drift into his pockets, his phone as well with his sweatshirt hanging from his elbow, and relaxes. his chin tilts up and his feet separate a bit more than before. "i wouldn't say stupid." colby shrugs, his voice coming out as monotone. boredom laces his words, though he may have a slight interest in the man's sudden change. just a slight, though. "a fool, but not stupid. if you were stupid you would have ignored what i said and talked even more."

the stoat really doesn't like the cat. it is understandable, though, since she has this crazed look in her eyes that causes colby to shiver internally. what was she thinking? could she possibly have been imagining a scenario colby certainly wouldn't like one bit? such as the cat chasing the stoat around, maybe even suffocating him by pouncing on him? he almost shivers visibly. that would be some sort of sick torture for him.

though he noticed the moose's sudden change, he didn't expect the cat to as well, nor comment on it. she is a bit more observant than colby originally thought, maybe as observant as him. she had picked up on the man's strange behavior just as easily as the stoat and reacted to it, even physically. he would never do that; he would never "knuckle sandwhich" someone, especially not make an effort to stand on his toes just to do the action. luka and him are so different in many ways, such as the way she grins like any cat would, and her outspoken personality. colby could be like her, if he really tried (and anyone could be like him,) but why would he want to? what is so appealing about being talkative and social and meeting people? he can't imagine himself acting as the feline does, interacting with strangers and acting as if they are close friends. it just doesn't fit colby at all.

the way she said "pals" as if she was so sure about it, and without any hesitation, irks colby. they never met before, yet the girl can say that. how can she claim all of them to be friends when she barely knows any of the people in the shop? how does she know they are all friendly or even like her? "pals" aren't people you just met, they are close to you. if anything, the girl has acquaintances, though colby wouldn't mind being labeled as her enemy. "we're not "pals,"" he huffs, not liking the sound of her words one bit.

"and i'm not grumpy, i just don't like annoying cats that get into other people's business." actually, he doesn't like anyone who gets into other people's business, especially when they try to get into his.

someone's voice came and colby looks towards the counter to see a blonde boy behind it. he looks as if he is waiting on colby, which helps colby register that the boy is ready to take his order. without needing to think, the stoat replies, "yeah, i'll have black coffee but with caramel." he doesn't know the proper name for the coffee he always gets (or even if it has one) but he wouldn't use it even if he did. the boy before him smells strongly of feline, causing colby's nose to scrunch in displeasure. "great.. another cat shifter.."

he had heterochromia, the man that was approaching me. one eye was blue, while the other was a chocolate brown. to most this wouldnt be anything but cool, seeing as it was rare and had a certain beauty to it. he also had a tattoos and piercings. normal. he had brown hair. normal. his shape shifting form was canine like, from the smell of him. again, this was normal (to other shape shifters, at least). except for the fact that he looked like my brother a little too much. the one i had lost when humans raided our camp years before we started to understand the concept of "blending in". and this man, whom didnt know me, nor did i know him, had the same voice. rough and scratchy, like this was the first time it had been used in decades; at least thats how it sounded from my distance to him, which was pretty close, considering he had settled down next to me on this old, rickety bench. now, im not usually one to accept such things as this and would reject such, but i was unfortunately temporarily mute and unable to move as well, at least for the moment. at least thats what i thought, until i heard myself utter out something that sounded /somewhat/ friendly. "well, i mean, its america, isnt it? nobody can kill you for being yourself or different in the promised land, eh?" now, before you argue that what i had managed to say was cruel and unholy, the very opposite of sweet or friendly, this is my definition of nice, not yours, which is probably very different, im assuming. plus, its not that unjust. just a mere joke showing that i knew what he was, and that i also knew that he was aware of what i was. so yes, this is nice for me, though im still sure you're not convinced. nevertheless, i felt obligated to be nice to this man, for what reason i was assuming is because he looked like a twin to my own brother, and lord knows i was up for any familiar face, whether it the real thing or not i do not care. so i was going to be "nice" to this stranger, whom's name i finally comprehended was alec. how i was going to do this was going to be difficult, seeing as i have never really known how to introduce myself or how to ask if they wanted to hang out again or not. but i was going to try my hardest, even if i looked like an idiot in the process, which i believe had already begun to take place, seeing as i hadn't even mentioned my name. this, i am guessing, is a big part of the whole hey-lets-be-friends-because-you-look-like-my-dead-brother thing. and if it was, i was failing big time, so like the nonchalant person i was, i abruptly announced to what i assumed was the whole city. "my name is alaska, like the big, cold state, if you get my drift."

"okay, good," rilli responded, running her fingers through her hair as she used her foot to wipe around the napkins to clean up the remaining mess. she gave a quick smile to the employee who came and offered to soak up the rest of the hot mess. she stepped back, now standing beside the boy.

when he said that he didn't want to order anything now, she felt a pang of guilt. did rilli ruin his appetite? did she stop him? he had been standing in line when she clumsily bumped into him. but then he asked if she wanted to sit with him. rilli had lost her appetite too, so she shrugged and then looked at him with her grey eyes, "um, okay, sure." she added a nod to her response to sound a bit more confident. "yeah, if you want me to."

Zach smiled at her answer. "Okay, um..." He looked around until he spotted an empty table in the corner. "How about over there?" He suggested. He squeezed through the waiting peoplr, glancing behind himself to make sure Rilli was following. He pulled out a chair for her, then sat down across from the squid-shifter. "Uh..." he began nervously, his confidence suddenly deflating. "I, um, I saw your watch." He said in a low voice, as if he was worried about anyone overhearing. "Youre a shifter?" He asked, pushing up his sleeve to show her his own watch. "I'm Zach, by the way." He introduced himself. "I, uh, I'm a deer," he continued. "A musk deer. From the antlers community?"

realizing that, even with a coffeehouse-full of shifters, she probably wouldn't catch anyone else to talk to, airy stood, pushing the chair in out of habit and grabbing her two cups. having both her hands full probably wouldn't aid her with anything, so she ran her gaze over basil's number multiple times and, after seeming to have remembered it, tossed the empty cup into the garbage on her way out of the building. the bell once again made a little jingling noise before the door swung on it's hinges and closed, leaving airy outside in the gentle breeze to find another place to go. she looked around and was headed towards a little bakery when she caught sight of the library: now, even though she wasn't the biggest reader ever, she enjoyed wandering through the endless aisles of books, books, and books, reading the titles and sometimes even looking at the fronts and backs to get a gist of what it might be about. her mind completely forgot about the shop of treats she was headed towards as she fixed her route to take her to the library, pushing open the door and stepping inside, immediately glad for the warmness it brought her. the girl took another sip of her iced coffee as she went through the many aisles, her pointer finger sliding against hardcovers, books worn with age, and new ones with a fresh feel. it was in one certain aisle between two taller bookcases that she got to the end and began to turn, when she nearly ran into a man (seeming to work here) with black, neat hair (lawrence c;). luckily, she pulled the hand that held her cup back quickly and retreated a step backwards to avoid yet another crash. "oh, pardon me! i didn't see you there, sir.." what was she apologizing for? she wasn't sure. but maybe this man was one to be offended by near-physical-contacts with strangers, and she wanted to speak her apologies before he let loose his rage on her... that was, if he was that type of person.

rilli nodded when zach asked her about going to sit at an empty table in the corner. she was glad it was further away from the others - she hated knowing that other people could hear her. always a bit paranoid, you could say, almost a bit like the giant squid really: a creature that refuses to crawl out of the depths of the ocean.

"thank you," she said, as she watched him pull out a chair for her and sat down. she drummed her fingers against the table, rubbing her hands together in slight nervousness. but when she heard zach's voice falter, showing that he was anxious too, her grey eyes flicked up to meet his face instead of the table she'd been looking at.

at his first words, she gulped, and her gaze darted towards his wrist. her physical tension released slightly as her shoulder relaxed and her collar bone became less prominent with her chest muscles loosening; the whole human world didn't know. just another shifter. just another shifter. it wasn't as bad as she'd thought. "zach, a deer shifter," she repeated in a low voice that zach could still hear. she smiled slightly, looking down at the table and let a nervous chuckle out before looking back up at him. "you scared me. i thought you might not have been a shifter."

she paused, and an awkward silence ensued before rilli realized that she should probably introduce herself. "oh, sorry," she said, slightly flustered. "i, i'm not that good with others...i'm rilli. i'm a, uh, uh, a giant squid shifter." she paused for a moment, cringing slightly. she didn't like her animal. how useless, how pathetic, how gross. her grey eyes met his gaze again. eye contact is good, rilli, she thought to herself. "i'm from the...uh, seafood community."

Zach watched Rilli's nervous behavior as she listened to him, then relaxed as she realized that he was one of her kind. "Rilli, a squid shifter." He repeated in the same manner as she had. "Well, uh... I suppose we should stick together? Maybe we could be friends?" He suggested. "I, uh, I mean, not in a weird way! Only if you want to." He hurriedly added, trying not to seem too hasty. You can't just rush into friendships, he reminded himself. "I, uh, I've just never met another shifter before, that's all." He looked around at all the other seemingly normal people. Now that he'd met Rilli, he wasn't sure how many others were shifters as well. You just couldn't tell, out here in the human world.

Wren combed his fingers through his hair as he waited for someone - anyone - to walk in. He sighed, then ducked under the counter and glanced over the messy stacks of books under it. Some of them were reserved books, like Colby had come in to get, and some were returned books. He could either call the people who'd reserved books to remind them to pick them up, or he could shelf the remaining returned books. He decided to do the latter of the two tasks, the one that involved less social interaction - or so he thought. It wasn't his most favorite thing to do, but it passed the time. It wasn't as if the library was especially busy that day, even though he had to stay there just in case, because it was his job. He did get a lower salary, but he was the only worker besides his boss - actually, there was a human girl, but she was rarely at her job because she was 'sick'. It was a wonder she hadn't been fired, but it was probably just a perk to being human - Lawrence didn't do it well, but at least he did his job. He didn't hear Airy walk in as he searched through the pile of novels to collect the unmarked ones that needed to be returned. He walked down the aisle, finding the spots for the missing books and replacing them. When he reached the end of the aisle, he turned, only to run right into the girl. His books were knocked out of his arms, and he immediately dropped to the ground to gather them. Wren didn't look up at her, blushing out of embarrassment as he collected his books, holding them in his arms. Man, did he wish he had his sunglasses to hide his expression. He heard her apologize. "That's okay, it wasn't your fault." He mumbled loud enough for her to hear.

airyanna bit her bottom lip after the boy's response, wondering if she should help him or not. "no, i'm sorry, i really should have watched where i was going, sir... let me help you." kneeling, the girl reached for one of the books that had gone flying farther than the others and was currently out of his reach, grasping it and holding it out to him. "are you alright?" airy took this chance to take a peek at his face, and a small smile spread itself across her lips when she saw the rosy color of his cheeks. she felt incredibly sorry for running into him, and especially since he was the second boy today she'd made contact with... on accident. and in more of a random crash than a gentle poke or something. no matter how random and awkward that would be if she poked a random boy, it was better than humiliating them by knocking books out of their hands or splattering their sweatshirt with vanilla iced coffee. making sure to not absentmindedly take a sip of her iced coffee as she waited for him to take the book from her, airy lowered the cup onto the floor, though still kept a firm hand on the lid and the uppermost part of it. she didn't want to accidentally kick it and have it make a mess, or have to go and bother basil again about needing just one more medium vanilla iced coffee. gosh, she'd thought about iced coffee a lot today. she'd probably wait an eternity before ordering it again.

Lawrence looked up at her as she knelt to join him on the floor, realizing that she was holding out a book to him. "Thank you," he mumbled, taking it from her and adding it to the pile in his arms. "I'm fine, really." He assured, standing up. As before mentioned, he didn't have a very good nose, but was sure that he smelled something different about her... was she a shifter? It seemed like a bird, a smaller bird. But he wouldn't ask until he was absolutely certain. It would be awkward, not to mention confusing, if she was just a strange-smelling human. She wouldn't know what a shifter was, and probably think he was crazy. "Were you, um, looking for something? Can I help you?" He asked, trying to change the subject while he shifted the books in his arms, as some of them were slipping. "I, uh, I work here." He said, making sure she knew that.

❝There might be a lot of fish in the sea,
But tell me, are there any other squid?❞

rilli raised an eyebrow as she noticed him repeating her facts just as she had done. was he teasing her? making fun of her? she couldn't tell. Ahe, well, wasn't that great at reading body language. but, at his offer to stick together, she wasn't sure what to say. She hadn't had many friends - and the few she had were human and didn't know of her secret. maybe she'd have more "seafood shifter" friends if she ever saw anyone else around that community. but heck, who else was a seafood shifter or even remotely wanted to be one? useless powers. useless powers.

"well, i've, uh, never met any other shifters either," rille responded nodding slightly and playing with her fingers again. her eyes darted from his to the group of shifters on the other side of the shop. "i think those guys over there might be shifters though. i think i've seen some of them before, heading over to the communities." she shrugged, unsure of what else to say. "i don't really know them though, so i could be wrong...but yeah, okay." she gave a subtle, light half smile as she looked down at her fingernails. "friends it is."

oh gosh, this was awkward. what to say now? was there anything to say? what do friends even talk about? how do you even make friends? what just happened? was there any more for her to say so that the conversation didn't get awkward? she hated being in the middle of an awkward conversation, but she also hated small talk and continuing conversation. but she had to choose the one she hated least. "since you say you don't know any shifters, i'm assuming you don't know many of the others in the antler community?" she asked, after waiting for his response. "there aren't many - or well, uh, any that i know of - in my community." she hated saying seafood. all the rest of the communities had a neutral name - why did the sea creatures need such a demeaning and derogatory name?!
