❝There might be a lot of fish in the sea,
But tell me, are there any other squid?❞

she stayed, leaning against the wall in one of the nooks in the cozy coffee shop, her fingers intertwining as she held the warm cup with both of her hands. rilli blew over the top of her coffee, sending the foggy steam away from her. she took a few sips and shifted her position slightly.

rilli listened in to a couple of the conversations nearby. there was a group of three: two male shifters and one female. they seemed to strike up the most interesting conversation. well, it wasn't exactly conversational; it seemed more like a tense argument that was barely staying civil. and it seemed to be about small little insignificant things too, like height and stuff. rilli shrugged and let out a tiny sigh as she puffed on her coffee once more. it was quite hot.

her fingers began to burn as they held the coffee cup and she moved to go put the cup down for a second. as she scooched around the shop, she saw a small bit of the counter where she could place her drink for a moment. she had to cross the line first, though. with a deep breath, rilli moved, her agile and lean body slipped between people. as she began to cross in front of a shifter that she sort of recognized [zach], reaching to put her coffee cup down before she dropped it, she accidentally stepped on his feet. "oh my gosh, i'm sorry," she said, checking to make sure she hadn't spilled any coffee on him or on the ground.

Zach glanced around, more intent on warming himself than paying attention to what was around him or blocking an entrance. He barely saw Rilli slip past a few other customers and hardly had time to react before the cup collided with the ground. He jumped in fright but realized it was just a spilt drink. "I-it's okay," he reassured, nervously reaching down to grab it, relieved that it hadn't splashed on himself. The floor, he was sad to say, was not so fortunate. "Um," He gave the mangled, half-empty cup a quizzical look, as if he was unsure what to do with it. "I don't suppose you want this?" He asked rhetorically, then reached over and dumped it in the trash can. He wasn't present to see the other accident which had happened merely minutes ago, ironically with a group of other shifters. "I, uh, I can buy you another one?" He offered, glancing at the mess on the floor. He supposed he'd have to tell an employee about that. He turned his attention back to the girl, waiting for her reply. Unlike most others of his kind, he couldn't smell other shifters.

"ah, shoot," she mumbled under her breath as the somewhat inept girl clearly didn't know what to do. she took a couple of the napkins from the counter and bent down to try and contain the mess. as she had reached over to grab the napkins, her jacket sleeve slipped up and exposed the special shifters' watch. she heard his question above her, feeling his eyes watching her as she bent down on the floor and covered the spill with napkins. the girl did seem slightly jumpy, as rilli was always a little -if not a lot- unsure of herself.

rilli stood back up, bumping into zach again, as she got up a little too close to him. she jumped back. shaking her head as she avoided looking him in the eyes, tossing her hair back. "oh, don't worry about it," she said with a nervous giggle. "i was almost done anyways." she obviously hadn't almost been done, looking at the amount of coffee spilt on the floor. "i didn't get any on you, did i?"

hearing his words, airyanna quickly side-stepped out of the way, grinning with amusement at the weasel before taking her two cups and heading over to one of the lonely tables with no one accompanying its chairs. she passed two shifters looking at a puddle of coffee that had somehow leaked onto the floor, and another pair where the boy was offering the girl a cookie. she knew memories were being made in the coffeehouse right then- aside from the tall, male shifter and the much shorter female and male entwined in what seemed to be nothing near a conversation, and more like an argument. but hey, in the end there might be something good made out of that! finally arriving at her destination, the bird took a seat, glancing out the large window facing the city streets as she drank some of the delicious iced coffee. many people made their way about the sidewalks and street, navigating to meeting places or even just buildings that housed books or food. people that had normal lives, who lived in houses with families and didn't have to bother about getting back to their confined communities in time, as to not anger the government. airy shook her head, releasing her eyes from the sight of the outside world and instead allowing them to roam back through the small coffee shop, setting her chin atop a hand propped by an elbow on the table.

Zach watched her clean up the mess, feeling a little guilty that he didn't help her, instead he just stood there awkwardly until she was done. He noticed the watch on her wrist and immediately knew what it meant, but decided not to say anything about it. He couldn't talk about it in the open. "Huh?" He asked, blinking and withdrawing from his thoughts as she asked him a question. "Oh, um, no, I'm fine." He assured her. He wrung his hands behind his back. "Uh, do you want to sit down with me?" I, uh, I wasn't going to buy anything, anyways." He said quietly, though it wasn't true. He had intended on buying a drink, something to keep him warm, but he was eager for a chance to talk to the girl about her watch. He hoped that she'd accept his offer to sit with him, praying that she wouldn't be uncomfortable around him; after all, they had just met.

it became clear to colby that james' large size isn't what makes the moose shifter appear as a "bumbling fool." the man's way of speaking seems so apologetic and clumsy, and he reminds colby of a fish out of water. moose shifters are known to be intelligent and elegant, strangely enough, but the man before colby seems to be the complete opposite. sure, james is large with a tan complexion and the signature brown hair, but when he speaks, he reminds colby more of a mouse than anything. and honestly, the mouse like moose was starting to give the stoat shifter a headache.

the boy pinches the bridge of his nose. "you talk too much," colby comments with annoyance dripping from his voice. colby is obviously not the talkative type, unless the conversation has room for many snarky comments or is serious enough to make colby actually listen. he can't understand how someone could talk so much it makes his ears hurt. at least 90% of the time, he truly thinks of sewing the person's lips together or knocking them out.. well, he does "knock them" out in some way with the bluntly honest words he tells them. colby huffs. "maybe if you didn't talk so much, you wouldn't come out as a "bumbling fool.""

honestly, colby wouldn't mind the moose's presence if he were a bit less talkative. although colby chooses to be alone, one or two people won't cause him to break. bring in groups or crowds, though, will. such as right now. too many people means too many people to be annoyed by, and too many people to ruin his day (though this one in particular isn't the best.) but he always liked to be alone; all by himself with his own mind and thoughts. he is able to enjoy the little things when he isn't with anyone, and can truly feel happy. he is a beacon for people and social incidents, sadly (take the three people who ran into him for example,) but when the signal drawing the people near breaks, colby can actually enjoy his day and life, no matter how twisted today's life and socitey is.

sometimes, though, the air may get chilly without someone near,
but colby doesn't mind a bit of a chill.

just what he needs, another person to get on his nerves. colby noticed the girl just as she was making her way towards him and the bumbling fool, but he didn't expect her to actually comment on the conversation. "gah, the people beacon must be on full drive today," colby thinks, cursing. (see my last post if you're not sure what the "beacon" is ^^'.) immediately the girl's scent drifts to colby and he cringes; a cat shifter. of course she has to be a cat shifter. the feline like smirk could have given her shift away without her scent. great, now he has a mouse of a moose and a feline who probably wouldn't mind chasing his stoat form around. he groans audibly, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. "if one more person comes up i swear.."

he is able to ignore her first words, but when his height comes into the conversation yet again, he scoffs. "i'm taller than you, cat." hmm.. maybe he has something against cats. (well, they are a predator of his shift, and his childhood was his aunt leaving him alone with feline shifters... hmm..) but looking at the girl next to him, he was truly a good three inches or so taller, being five foot ten and all. he could see over her head clearly, with her head coming barely to his eyes. what exactly makes him short?

      just gonna casually repost these

"okay, good," rilli responded, running her fingers through her hair as she used her foot to wipe around the napkins to clean up the remaining mess. she gave a quick smile to the employee who came and offered to soak up the rest of the hot mess. she stepped back, now standing beside the boy.

when he said that he didn't want to order anything now, she felt a pang of guilt. did rilli ruin his appetite? did she stop him? he had been standing in line when she clumsily bumped into him. but then he asked if she wanted to sit with him. rilli had lost her appetite too, so she shrugged and then looked at him with her grey eyes, "um, okay, sure." she added a nod to her response to sound a bit more confident. "yeah, if you want me to."

he had always had a problem with talking too much. it was a bad habit of his. when he got too nervous or was unsure of himself, or afraid of making himself appear to be a fool, he tended to ramble on and on, which easily annoyed many people/shifters and gave him the exact appearance that he tried to avoid. when he was young, his father, an elk, was verbally very abusive, so he learned to keep his mouth shut and hardly say a thing. but when his father left and he started public school, at his mother's request, he was teased for being too quite. so it became a habit to be the talkative person, since it seemed to make him much more liked/likeable than being the quiet/shy guy. of course it had its bad moments, like right now. he felt like an idiot as his flaw was pointed out clearly by the stoat shifter, and than again by a feline of some sort that approached out of, what felt like to him, to have been no where. he was unable to help himself as his cheeks flooded with a dark crimson color in his embarrassment, and he ducked his head a bit, causing his shaggy brown locks to cover his eyes in an attempt to subconsciously hide his embarrassment. "n-no he's not. i'm the stupid one for rambling. s-sorry about that.." he muttered, his loud voice at a much softer tone, shoving his hands in both of his pockets as he shifted his weight uncomfortably.

realizing that, even with a coffeehouse-full of shifters, she probably wouldn't catch anyone else to talk to, airy stood, pushing the chair in out of habit and grabbing her two cups. having both her hands full probably wouldn't aid her with anything, so she ran her gaze over basil's number multiple times and, after seeming to have remembered it, tossed the empty cup into the garbage on her way out of the building. the bell once again made a little jingling noise before the door swung on it's hinges and closed, leaving airy outside in the gentle breeze to find another place to go. she looked around and was headed towards a little bakery when she caught sight of the library: now, even though she wasn't the biggest reader ever, she enjoyed wandering through the endless aisles of books, books, and books, reading the titles and sometimes even looking at the fronts and backs to get a gist of what it might be about. her mind completely forgot about the shop of treats she was headed towards as she fixed her route to take her to the library, pushing open the door and stepping inside, immediately glad for the warmness it brought her. the girl took another sip of her iced coffee as she went through the many aisles, her pointer finger sliding against hardcovers, books worn with age, and new ones with a fresh feel. it was in one certain aisle between two taller bookcases that she got to the end and began to turn, when she nearly ran into a man (seeming to work here) with black, neat hair (lawrence c;). luckily, she pulled the hand that held her cup back quickly and retreated a step backwards to avoid yet another crash. "oh, pardon me! i didn't see you there, sir.." what was she apologizing for? she wasn't sure. but maybe this man was one to be offended by near-physical-contacts with strangers, and she wanted to speak her apologies before he let loose his rage on her... that was, if he was that type of person.

he was a bit amazed by the man's sudden change of manner. though james' demeanor still resembled one of a mouse, it became more meek and shy than the previous talkative fool. it's clear to see the moose is uncomfortable with the stoat and siamese cat shifters, but why? he was so animated not only five minutes ago. for some reason, colby's words had hit him to the point he changed attitude, or was it not colby's words, but the girl's?

curiosity takes over the stoat shifter's mind as he wonders what caused the sudden change, and what will cause another?

colby's figure follows james' pose unconsciously, but in a power manner, not meek like the moose's. the boy's hands drift into his pockets, his phone as well with his sweatshirt hanging from his elbow, and relaxes. his chin tilts up and his feet separate a bit more than before. "i wouldn't say stupid." colby shrugs, his voice coming out as monotone. boredom laces his words, though he may have a slight interest in the man's sudden change. just a slight, though. "a fool, but not stupid. if you were stupid you would have ignored what i said and talked even more."
