"Babe-it's time."
Sherry nodded, looked up at the clock, then down at her son. Andrew would normally be asleep right now, but she'd made him take a long nap that afternoon so he wouldn't be too sleepy when it was time for them to leave. She tightened the laces on his little hiking boots, zipped his jacket, and pulled up his hood. She looked around their little house checking locks and windows, and oddly found herself straightening stray cushions on the couch. She was stalling. "Time to go kiddo, let's go find your sister." She reached into her pack and pulled out a lollypop. "It's blueberry."
She slung her pack onto her back, pulled her son up onto her hip and went out the door. With winter, Larry had been warming the car while she locked up. She locked the front door, and walked to the van. After buckling Andrew into his seat, she got into her own, opened the thermos she had put there before the sun went down and took a swig straight from it. Larry pulled out of the driveway and meandered his way through backroads. They had planned to cut through the woods, though it was a longer route, to get from their secluded little home to the city. There weren't very many clubs left that were still open, and Jules had said that he'd left the girl at a club near his own. The route they were taking would take a good deal more time, and they wouldn't be getting into town until well after dawn the day after tomorrow. They'd decided that they would stay in the van for tonight after they'd made a good distance. Andrew was already nearly asleep and Sherry reached back and took the sticky lolly stick and wiped his hands with a wetnap.
About three hours into their drive, Larry said, "I think we should stop. It's getting late, and we really should let him lay out on the seat. He looks so uncomfortable with his neck cricked sideways like that." He pulled into the woods, and stopped the van near the creek. He got out of the van to stretch his legs and check the tires before they went to sleep. He walked down to the creek and saw a teenage girl stooped across the creek washing her hands and arms. It wasn't until she turned, just a touch, that he saw not only the machete on the ground next to her, but also the bottom tips of her wings.
He quietly made his way up the stream about fifty yards and cut across, then backtracked to near the girl. "Hello, please don't get upset or anything. I'm with the resistance. My wife and I are on our way to save another young Tendit that escaped presumably the same time you did. You look tired and hungry. We have food, and our van is warm. Please, my name is Larry. I don't want to hurt you, I'm asking that you please not do anything to hurt me or my family. You Tendits are remarkably strong and fast. I've no doubt you'd best me if you tried. I only want to help..." He paused, not sure what else to say and keeping his hands opened in front of him, quietly waited for an answer.
