Soft feminine voices managed to find their way to the prince causing his head to turn towards the sources. The details were a little hushed from where he was standing with the wind blowing in his ears. He paid closer attention untik he realized the chosen topic was of Romeo and Juliet. The conversation wasn't much of his business anyway so he tuned it out to the best of his ability. It turned out surprisingly easy as his mind began to wander. This would be the first time he met the daughter, the younger maiden known as Fayette. What if the meeting didn't go well? To have the burden of peace resting upon his shoulders truly wore down on him though it was not outwardly expressed. All of his doubts remained internal, not even a slight grimace gave them away. He was fairly hard to read, at least to those who didn't know him well enough. Well it was no doubt obvious that he was quite lost in thought as he stood though, his gaze was turned up to watch the fluffy clouds in the sky. He let out a soft sigh at the sight. The clouds moved slow forming into different shapes while they were carried to uncharted lands. Their paths were of freedom, sometimes he wished he could be a cloud. He wouldn't ever had to do anything, besides eliminate on the common beings below in the form of rain. He found himself chuckling at this thought and then he pushed it away to get back to the more inlmoprtant subject.

This arranged marriage only had two outcomes in his mind. Success and failure. With success there would be peace, health, and prosperity, perhaps even happiness? With failure there would be blood, war, famine, death, and sorrow. With the two outcomes there only came one option. He had to succeed for the sake of his people. He was unsure if a real love could be found, his heart didn't call for anyone yet, but could the same be said of her? How awful that would be. To be forced to be with someone while your heart yearned for another. Well he was unsure what that felt like and he just hoped that nobody else would ever have to know. Oh dear...What about children? He dearly wanted little ones, but how would that work? Would they be born human or dragon? Maybe they would be some sort of freaky mutant thing with a human body, but wings, horns, and a tail whipping around. Oh and what about scales? Maybe weird scales, and an odd color to match. Such a child were surely be looked down upon, it would have to remain hidden. That, of course, was assuming they would even have children. He didn't know if she even wanted any, and even if she did that didn't mean she would just agree to have any with them. He had agreed to this because he thought it would be simple, but it was really quite complicated and that drove up a little insane. He was pulled from his thoughts by a voice. It was calling to him. Even in his daze he could recognize his name when be heard it. He blinked himself back into reality and turned his head.

Two ladies stood, the two who had been chatting of Romeo and Juliet. Was that conversation still being upheld? How long had he been drifting inside the confines of his own head? He turned his body to face them taking in the cursty given to him by one. He looked closer realizing it was Eden, and then he looked to her company. Ah. So she was conversing with Mira. As he was beckoned to go to them he found his body moving without a second thought. He was fairly comfortable with Eden, Mira made him a bit nervous though. Only because he did not know her all that well and he was typically more withdrawn around strangers, or relative strangers. He strode over to them placing his right hand over his waist and giving a little bow.
"Greetings my lady Eden, and as well to you lady Mira. What a beautiful morning it is to be outside, wouldn't you agree?" His question was directed towards both of them, there was a formal manner about everything he did. He referred to all women and 'lady' even the commoners. Just as he referred to all men as either 'sir' or 'lord'. It was a personal preference for him. He gave each of the ladies a gentle smile as he stood before them with a relaxed, but proper, posture."Forgive me for I may have eavesdropped a little, but was Romeo and Juliet your chosen subject of conversation?"Perhaps he would join in as he had read Romeo and Juliet a fair few times himself.

Brushing away a stray strand of hair Mira waited patiently for Edens’ answer, if The Lady was interested in her past it could be detrimental to the trust she had built with the royalty and if Eden wasn’t interested then Mira didn’t know what else to tell her. For as bad as she needed this information Mira would not betray her friends to get it, revealing anything about them was a great risk especially for Fayette, for if anything compromised the princess's integrity war may be the result.
"The Prince of Verona is indeed an interesting character. What his past was perhaps I could guess, but rather I would impart a warning to him. The Prince in the story leaves punishment too late and many of the characters end up dying because of his laxed efforts. To uphold the law sometimes one must stop threats before they even become such instead of waiting for them to happen first." The Lady said her gaze calculated and meaningful. "Benvolio, now there's an interesting character. Practically Romeo's brother and yet so different in character from the love struck young man, he is about as unromantic as a man can be. Yet, he is intensely loyal to Romeo. I would think, though I must admit I do not know for sure, that he would act rashly against Juliet in anger at his friend's banishment rather than in understanding. Loyalty overcomes the desire for peace." Eden said with a pleasant smile on her face.
This gave Mira pause for a moment, did this woman know of her past already? There was no way, she had never spoken of it, the only thing that may have given Eden a clue was her slight aversion to soldiers that while subtle was still present. Trying to shake off this uneasy feeling Mira moved her gaze over the scenery "Yes, perhaps but at the same time, it seems that the prince is in a position of false power, no matter his actions the people only have a surface respect for him while their true feelings run deep. As you say this may be his fault but I believe that those of the houses are just as much to blame for the tragedy that follows.", clearing her throat Mira glanced at Eden sheepishly, "Pardon my tone, I can occasionally become too passionate, a fault that I adopted from my father." About to move onto Eden's thoughts on Benvolio, or rather her seemingly rather limited knowledge on the subject at hand Mira was interrupted as Eden noted someone coming down their way.
"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse
thy name;or if thou wilt not, be
but sworn my love and I’ll no longer
be a Capulet.
"

With a soft chuckle Eden stood and called "My lord Dareos." before executing yet another flawless curtsy. The young prince was standing a ways away and it seemed that like them he had taken a morning stroll. Upon hearing Eden's voice the prince seemed to come out of his revere and headed towards them.
Standing alongside Eden, Mira gave a deep bow of her head with a murmured "Your highness." In truth she did not know the younger prince, not as well as she knew the king and many of the lords. The few times she had spoken with him were during meetings as they debated back and forth on agreements and amendments.
"Greetings my lady Eden, and as well to you lady Mira. What a beautiful morning it is to be outside, wouldn't you agree?" He asked, his usual polite manner just as it always was.
Returning his smile Mira's gaze moved across the beautiful scene before her "I must confess that very few places I have seen have such a beautiful view." Her silver eyes capturing and reflecting the scene like two mirrors Mira slowly looked back to the prince hoping that the truth of her words reached his ear.
"Forgive me for I may have eavesdropped a little, but was Romeo and Juliet your chosen subject of conversation?" asked the prince. To this Mira was unsure, saying no outright could -and most likely would- be taken as rude, not something common for a diplomat but if they did say yes then it would only be that much more difficult to continue their previous discussion.
"Yes your highness, we were discussing the complexity of the secondary characters throughout the novel and hypothesizing what these characters may be going through throughout the stories progression." she said smiling softly Mira brushed yet another stray strand of hair away from her face, "forgive me but I find it a little surprising that such a tragedy would hold your attention, your highness."

Eden had noted the small glimmers of surprise pass through Mira's eyes as she mentioned the past of their figurative Prince. Was it really so surprising that she could guess at the diplomat's background? It was written on her, one just had to know where to look. Her carriage, for example, was that of a warrior's and not a politician's no matter how much she hid it. To the lady's discerning eyes such small details became glaringly obvious and the little pieces fitted together to tell the story of someone's life. Yet even with that she could only guess.

In a way it was almost disturbing the way she read people, it was a little to exact as if some sort of devilry lay under cover behind it, yet none did. She had simply been trained to be observant of people in such a way that they could not easily hide from her the truth. This was for the young noble both a blessing and a curse. To know such intimate details about a person without ever having been told left her often shunned by her contemporaries for they feared her eyes.

What good was a noble who could not hide his own secrets?

It was a world that dealt only in using. There were no friends, only those to be used or who used her. Such was the life of a noble, for the most part anyways. Perhaps Eden's was overly somber and too full of intrigues, yet in many ways she enjoyed it. How boring it must be to not know.

Knowledge was the fulcrum of her world. She spun on an axis around it, forever pulled close by gravity and yet never quite close enough to satisfy her. It was a dance that would never end with her spinning always in a circle, forever straining to move just a little closer.

But with a genteel smile, the weary thoughts departed from her overburdened mind and focused once more upon the topic of their conversation.

"Yes, the lady Mira and I were discussing Benvolio and his possible reactions if he had discovered that Juliet was the cause of Romeo's banishment."

A strong sense of pride swelled wothine the heart of the young prince at the agreement that he received from the diplomatic dragon lady. A grateful gleam appeared in his eyes as he cared highly for the opinions of others in these rather trivial matters. He wished for hood impressions alone after all, keeping himself in high regard to the dragons was important if this betrothal was to be a success. He knew not everybody was bound to find his presence as charming as he wished they would. He cast his gaze out over the gardens appreciatively before glancing back at the two ladies, both beautiful in their own respects. Lady Mira was the first to speak on the matter of Romeo and Juliet, he gave her a thoughtful expression. They were discussing the secondary characters? He leaned back on the heels of his feet his hands resting at his sides as he gave some thought to the subject. He never really thought about the second characters though they were important to the overall plot in their own regards he supposed. Not a bad conversation to be held in the least. The comment made to him about his attention being caught by the tragic romance caused a puzzled expression to appear upon his features. He very well could be forming a tragic tale of his own right now, but he dearly hoped not. He wasn't sure how this all would turn out, but hopefully death would not be where this story ended, hopefully it brought peace. That was swhat he wanted.

His gaze settled on Mira, he wished not to express these thoughts which left him with the dilemma of how to then answer her. He could ignore her, but that wasn't something he did often, not on purpose anyway. It wasn't as though the question was a heavy burden, just not expected at this time.
"Alas! I must be well read as a prince, and not only that, but I do enjoy the story as a whole. For even with the tragic end to the love between Romeo and his dear Juliet their sacrifice to be together was not in vain. The houses of Montague and Capulet ceased their feud. That is what I believe to be important." Oh how ironic it would be if such a situation were to turn out to be real. That would bring much pain to the people, but perhaps it would also bring peace and serenity. It wasn't an option he was currently taking in consideration, but if it were to happen perhaps some good could come of it. When Eden spoke his head slowly turned so he could look at her with a gentle smile. Getting into more specifics they had been conversing about Benvolio. It was an interesting thought to have, what would Benvolio do if he discovered that Juliet was the reason Romeo was banished. It was a head scratcher indeed, but it could not be known for sure, only guessed at. Why not throw his opinion out there and see what they though of it?

"Well Benvolio clearly cares for Romeo and his well-being. His loyalty cannot be questioned, and he seems to be the rational thoughtful type. He tries to keep the peace, only fighting when he has no other choice. I believe based on this he may try to gather information as to why this happened and as he is so loyal to Romeo I feel as though he would try to help his star crossed cousin and the fair Juliet if it meant Romeo's happiness." He ceased his short monolog at that point to allow the ladies time to take in the words he just uttered and recite their own opinions on them if they so desired. Truly he wished to know more of what went on in their minds, not to try and understand them, heaven forbid, such a thing seemed impossible, but rather to get a refreshing opinion or two that were not his own and see if, perhaps, they agreed with him. Of course if they did not he would not get offended, but rather respect their insight. He was merely curious. Always curious.

Seeing the pride and satisfaction shine through in the princes’ eyes gave Mira a sense of relief. Looking about her Mira couldn't help but smile a little, it was very true that these scenic paths were one of the most beautiful but even this view could not compete with the open sky just before setting of the sun, to that nothing could compare. Feeling something heavy in her heart Mira tried to think of the last time she had flown freely, weeks? Months? It had been so long it seemed that the closest she had come to that feeling was the beginning of her nightmares before they crumbled into darkness.
"Alas! I must be well read as a prince, and not only that, but I do enjoy the story as a whole. For even with the tragic end to the love between Romeo and his dear Juliet their sacrifice to be together was not in vain. The houses of Montague and Capulet ceased their feud. That is what I believe to be important.” The prince said pulling the diplomat out of her thoughts. Nodding her understanding Mira didn’t ask anything further, the way he chose his words made her feel as if he did not wish to speak of the matter in great deal. That could be understood though, there were many parallels between the situation before them and the tragic love story, to some it could be considered a prophecy to what the future held, to Mira however it was a cautionary tale of a grudge too strong to overcome it would not be their future.
"Yes, the lady Mira and I were discussing Benvolio and his possible reactions if he had discovered that Juliet was the cause of Romeo's banishment.” Eden added a smile only adding light to the womans' face. Truly Mira found it amazing how well mannered and elegant the Lady before her could be. Honestly to someone so new to the human court Mira found Eden fairly intimidating, a feeling that would never see the light of day.
It took the Prince a moment to word his opinion "Well Benvolio clearly cares for Romeo and his well-being. His loyalty cannot be questioned, and he seems to be the rational thoughtful type. He tries to keep the peace, only fighting when he has no other choice. I believe based on this he may try to gather information as to why this happened and as he is so loyal to Romeo I feel as though he would try to help his star crossed cousin and the fair Juliet if it meant Romeo's happiness.” he answered thoughtfully. From what she could sense this was a real opinion about the character from the story, unlike the conversation earlier between herself and Eden.
The diplomat was unsure as to how continue this conversation, Eden had obviously called him over to gain his opinion of his brother but how to get that was where the diplomat felt she was on shaky ground. The Prince did not know Mira that well so if she asked outright it would seem strange and above all suspicious, something the diplomat wished to avoid. Glancing at the lady to her right Mira decided it best to allow her to swing the conversation in an advantageous way, she was more familiar with The Prince and vice versa it would be easier for Eden to ask such personal questions. Smiling thoughtfully Mira tilted her head to the side “That is an excellent point your highness, the young however can be very foolish and are easily swayed by their feelings. The end result may be as you say but I can see Benvolio loosing control at least momentarily and perhaps blaming Juliet.” she responded a slight smile crossing her face.

Eden took in the prince's opinion on the matter nodding in agreement with it. Had they been talking about the real Romeo and Benvolio, that surely would have been the case, however the personalities of the true people they spoke of did not quite match. It was an interesting dilemma, how to direct the Prince without making clear what they were actually speaking about. The challenge of it made the noble lady smile.

"A fair point indeed your highness. I too would tend think the man would take that path being a lover of peace but yet I find it is often those who love peace most who find their minds clouded. While in the play, Benvolio is certainly an intelligent man, he is a rather one dimensional character, as he should be of course. He is merely a secondary character. But let us speculate here for a moment and add to his character." she gave pause adopting a thoughtful expression, planning out the rout to take to get their desired information. It was a delicate little dance, seeking knowledge without letting the person know he or she was being coerced. To do so to the prince was especially delicate since Eden valued staying in favor with the Royal family.

Her thin, crimson lips pursed prettily for a moment and then she continued, "I would think it reasonable to say that Benvolio is obviously loyal to his friend for their bond is closer to that of brotherhood than anything else. Yet, say for instance that, as heartfelt as his love is for Romeo, he is easily swayed by the opinions of other. Even those who make the peace must eventually take one side or the other, and being swayed by the opinion of those closet to him, namely his relatives the Montagues, he decides to take action. Do you not think he would believe perhaps he could help foster a good relationship between Romeo and his first infatuation Rosaline?"

An eyebrow crested the pale waters of her forehead, putting into that single movement surprising gravitas. "If we consider that, perhaps his reaction would be different."

Eden reflected back on her words, deciding that they were a good start to the path she really wanted to travel down. It was difficult to reconcile the two drastically different persons of Benvolio and the elder prince, but now Eden had some semblance of an idea of how to get there. She just had to wait and see what Prince Dareos would say in response.

For a secondary character this conversation seemed more in depth than he would have thought. Why such curiosity for a fictional character? He studied each word spoken carefully looking for clues to the puzzle he had now worked out for himself. Certainly Benvolio could not be so complex as to warrant all this chatter. He looked between the two ladies for a moment something in his gaze changing subtly for a moment. It might have been suspicion, or amusement. There were a great many things it could be. Regardless of all that these inquired details were making him weary of this conversation. Quite clearly there was more to this, though he was hardly bothered by it. Underhanded tricks were not something he enjoyed truthfully, but perhaps some good would come with simply playing along. At the mention of the bond of brotherhood Dareos found himself thinking that this was not just some sort of figurative conversation. He pondered his next choice of words carefully as he was still unsure what to make of all this. He turned his gaze out towards the gardens, blue eyes taking in the scenery for a moment before returning to Eden and Mira to address there words. He folded his arms and tapped his fingers lightly, leaning his weight on his right leg.

"Of course he may very well try to do that. Perhaps we are overthinking his love for Romeo though. Maybe he would wish to help himself once he discovers Romeo's love for Juliet. Benvolio being a second character we don't get to truly learn his thoughts. Say he feels betrayed and thus scandalizes Romeo's reputation and gains favor for himself, earning the heart of a special lady he may want and swaying the people to his side." What might they think of these words? They might have been a little harsh though spoken in a pleasant tone as he still wished to give off the illusion that he thought this coversation was still about the play and nothing more.

Eʟʀɪᴄ Aᴠᴇʀɪʟʟ
of the Royal Guard

[ tagged: Chelsea Karien ]

Elric and the others listened attentively as Chelsea spoke. Men and knights of the Royal Guard, yes, but they were anything but rude. Well, terribly rude anyway. Elric was aware that they were prone to little outbursts every now and then, but at heart it was never meant. He supposed the people he knew understood that well enough and therefore why he hadn't many scars of his own simply from conversations with women in the past. But Chelsea was different by the long run. She herself had said not to be called a lady, and clearly preferred the rough-and-tough lifestyle they were well-accustomed to. And she was even skilled in swordsmanship, which was a surprise in itself in all regards. No need for his services then.

"That's one thing I admire about you dragons. You know how to take care of yourselves." Rowan said. "See, if we started training able women and accepting them into the Guard, we'd have twice as many warriors." And he had a good point. While Elric himself had yet to see a woman (here, at least) who admired a sword for its capabilities and not its wielder. There may have been some promising ones in the younger generations, but they were probably too far off from that concept to even consider it at this point.

"Funny stories, eh?" Larkin chipped in with badly-masked excitement. "Now there's something I can help you with." Elric couldn't help but grin at that. Larkin did have his fair share of stories to tell, especially since he, along with the rest of them, had seen a bit of battle in his time. Perhaps not fully-waged war, as the tension between humans and dragons had begun to die down before they really got a taste of the bloodshed. Regardless, Larkin was lucky enough to have gathered a few adventures up until now, and he was glad to dive right into them, no matter how embarrassing.

the diplomat

[age] twenty|four hundred [dragon] diplomat [ location ] garden [ tagged ] eden & dareos

Listening to Eden spin her story of the situation was fascinating to the young diplomat, from what she had observed from many ladies of the court it seemed that their only concerns were amusement and finding a good husband. Granted there were a few who broke this established character but many it seemed were content with where their futures were headed. Lady Eden on the surface seemed to be the perfect lady and yet watching her now she was a different person. Lady Eden had been playing this game all of her life it seemed while in comparison Mira felt more and more like a novice unable to contribute. This while frustrating Mira had to acknowledge as true and the only solution to her annoyance was practice and time just like the art of warfare and strategy. Quickly withdrawing from the path her thoughts had her on, Mira returned to the present conversation, just in time it seemed for the prince was responding to Eden’s supposed conditions.
"Of course he may very well try to do that. Perhaps we are overthinking his love for Romeo though. Maybe he would wish to help himself once he discovers Romeo's love for Juliet. Benvolio being a second character we don't get to truly learn his thoughts. Say he feels betrayed and thus scandalizes Romeo's reputation and gains favor for himself, earning the heart of a special lady he may want and swaying the people to his side.” The prince said his pleasant tone offset by the harshness of his words.
Something in the way the prince spoke ignited a feeling of uneasiness in the diplomats stomach, did he realize that they were trying to get something from him? If that was the case and they pushed him any farther the end result would be disastrous for both of them. Smiling thoughtfully Mira nodded “ That may very well be, many of the secondary characters are deep rooted in the more real human emotions, each are there to contrast the two main characters whose actions speak of the innocent and naivety of a youth.” Mira hoped that the general observation would make the prince feel more comfortable and less like he was being questioned. Speaking of youth though Mira couldn’t help but think of Fayette judging by the height of the sun in the sky she should be close to arriving, worry seeping into her silver eyes Mira didn’t know what her reception would be in this city. While normally the people seemed only to whisper quietly as she came into the city Mira had, had a few more bold townspeople who did everything from shout insults to throw fruit. Would Fayette really be okay with only Jannik? True, Mira trusted Jannik with her life but it would’ve been more reassuring if Fayette had both Jannik and Chelsea to protect her.

I was surprised at how quiet all the knights remained as I spoke but then again from what I had heard the knights did have a code of honour, I mean what would they be without that? Part of me wondered if they remained silent out of respect or maybe out of a faint inkling of fear that all humans seemed to hold against the dragons. The latter was a whisper, a murmur at the back of my mind, as were many of my darker thoughts about mankind, about humans and bout the joining of our races, things I would never speak of out loud. I smiled when one of the guards said that he admired the dragons for all knowing how to fight but in fact the reason we all knew how to fight was because there were so few of us.

"Aye, well all of my kind may be able to fight for themselves but even in our species I became more of a warrior than a lot of the rest of our kind." I said to them, "Fighting has always come naturally to me, though I suppose in your culture if you started to train your women people would have a hard time adjusting to it. After all tradition is hard to break." I knew that many human males looked down on women and thought themselves better than them, if it were up to me I would end that. Maybe that was part of the reason why people were unhappy with the linking of the species, many dragon women were strong willed and maybe people felt threatened at the thought of having people who might oppose them.

My interest was captured when one of the knights spoke up about having many stories and I looked at him with an interested grin on my face, "Well come on then spill, we don't have all day now do we?" I said to him. I looked over at Elric who hadn't spoken in a while, clearly he had been taking in everything that I had said, he seemed quite curious of my kind. And why wouldn't he be? He is young, most of them are, too young to have really fought in the war, too young to have met many dragons. I thought to myself.
