[ yep, since they're going towards the plains, they should be coming about now. ]

Hayley shivered, feeling like every drop of blood in her veins went cold. She shook off the feelings, trying to smile and be happy. As happy as you could get when you were about to pretty much get yourself killed. She nodded at Phyllis as she explained it was time to go, and where they'd be going. The plains were too close for comfort already, and she wasn't ready to go head first into the mess, not ready to get her neck bitten into and her blood sucked from her body faster than you could blink. It was a terrifying thought, really, and she didn't want to die that way. She smiled up at Tobias. "Ready?" She smiled, heading out with the others, sure he was following her, but really didn't check to make sure. He was a good, no, great, fighter, and she knew he could handle himself.

She shook her head as they headed into the vampire's territory, the grass high around her feet. She strung an arrow in her bow, keeping it at the ready to let it fly into the heart of the nearest vampire around, as soon as he or she appeared to herself. Her heart was pounding in her rib cage, which annoyed her because she knew they would be able to hear. Vampires had the super hearing to be able to pick up on the faint sound of a heart beating inside of a living human being, signifying that fresh blood still ran through her veins, keeping her alive. If a vampire found her caught unawares, her heart would stop and the blood would stop as well. She'd be dead. So she kept looking around her to make sure that she kept a sharp eye on her surroundings.

She let a sharp gasp escape her lips, since Toby was still a bit behind her, she let the small action of fear escape herself. She didn't want to be doing this. But her family kept her going. The thought of doing this for her family was the only thing that kept her going. She wouldn't let them die in vain, and if she was killed they would have died for no reason. She would never, ever let that happen. She stopped suddenly, realizing she was alone. "Toby?" She called out quietly.

A life spent wandering was definitely a different life. Ever since Jared became a vampire he'd found himself hopping from place to place in search of food... at first, humans had been everywhere and it was not difficult to feed, only difficult to stay undiscovered. But now that the remaining humans lived in fear and in hiding, it was definitely nigh on impossible to find good food. Ruthless and cold, he wasn't like some of the other vamps;; he spared no one and he didn't care about anything. He and the rest of his large hunting party had settled in on the plains, hoping some human would discover their camp and be curious enough to wander upon them... But no such luck, yet. He was part of a five-vamp watch that had been sent out to the outer parts of the plain to scout and found himself slowly exploring the perimeter of their camp when he heard a faint noise.

A beating heart. His throat suddenly drying, his head whipped to the side and his pale hazel eyes flickered from side to side only to spot a young girl standing not a hundred yards from him. He narrowed his eyes, focusing on her and watching as she turned around and called out a name. Tobias. He didn't recognize the name but he also didn't see anyone around her, so in a split second he was at her side and reaching out to touch her light brown--dare he say blonde?--hair and cooing "Hey there, gorgeous..." in a smooth tone. The moment she met his eyes he winked at her and then grabbed her violently by the shoulders, forcing her to the ground with vampiric strength. He was sure she didn't come alone by the fact she had weapons on her--lots and lots of weapons--and she looked clean and fed. He cocked his head to the side, pinning her down forcefully enough to bruise her shoulders. Crouching over her he purred "What's a pretty little thing like you doing out here all alone?" and lifted a hand to drag a thick, long, sharp fingernail down the side of her face. It didn't do much damage;; just enough to leave a narrow slice. He lifted the finger to his lips and stared her in the eyes, muttering, "Pleasure to meet your acquaintance, by the way."

His eyebrows perked up and he chuckled deeply. His entire attitude was sarcastic and condescending, and he was being extremely theatrical. The true Jared wasn't like this at all--he wouldn't play around and he wouldn't joke at all... But this was a cute, scared--judging by her heartbeat when he first found her--blonde and he couldn't resist. That is, until strong hands closed over his shoulders.

Hayley asked him if he was sick, but Tobias kept to himself and simply kept walking forward. He wasn't sure how to respond to that. Yes? Why bother lying? Instead he just swallowed nervously and pretended that he was just anxious for the attack. His feet trudged through the tall grass and he took in a deep, refreshing breath of air--it was so freeing to be outside. It helped him with his hunger, seeing as he wasn't completely surrounded with human smells. Just three other little humans, him, and the open earth. His mood improved but he had to hide it so that the rest of the group wouldn't be weirded out by his behavior. After several minutes of walking Phyllis finally turned around and declared that they were splitting up, at which point Tobias almost felt regret. Why? Did he actually care about the fact these humans would probably die at the hands of his brethren? Did he honestly have any sort of sympathy for them? He shook it off, walking away with Hayley.

A sound distracted him. He could hear something off in the distance... a crackling fire, perhaps? He narrowed his eyes, stopped walking, and honed in with his hearing. Sure enough, with his added focus, he heard that of vampires speaking and hollering and being loud in general. Normal human ears wouldn't catch the noise, but he could... and he felt a sort of anxiety deep in his chest. He wished he could just join them and be with his true people;; he missed not having to hide who he was. Alas, it wasn't an option, and what he was doing was truly benefiting the vampires. He refocused his eyes on the scene before him... only to realize that Hayley had disappeared from view. He groaned, following her scent in the air only to spot something strange up above.

There was an odd parting in the wild grass. He zipped quickly to the spot with his superhuman speed and his bright blue eyes fell on the back of the head of none other than Jared Ryker. The monster of a man had cut open Hayley's cheek and was staring at her feverishly, and Tobias suddenly realized why. Jared had an odd obsession with blondes and was rather prone to "taking them out of their human misery" as he sometimes put it. But no, this could not happen, not today. Tobias knew he was already under so much suspicion. Leaning down and grabbing Jared by the shoulders, he nearly put his lips to the man's ear and whispered in a voice quieter than a human's ears could pick up "Heya Jared," before ripping the man off of Hayley.

Jared spun around with fire in his eyes, crouching and getting into a very predatory attack position. His eyes fell on Tobias and widened only slightly. "Lach--"

Tobias shook his head, leaping forward and jabbing a knife at Jared. He had to keep up appearances. Even though Hayley wouldn't be able to tell they were speaking, she'd be able to judge by their actions what was going on and if Tobias hesitated too much it'd be very suspicious. Jared dodged out of the way but only after Tobias got close enough to swing up onto his back and cling on, murmuring "You're going to have to hit me. Make it look real and then get the hell out of here." Then, without further warning, he stabbed the blade into Jared's chest and twisted it, only narrowly missing the man's heart. Jared screamed out in pain, a furious roar, before violently tossing Tobias from his back.

Tobias landed heavily on the grass, exhaling in a cough from all of the air that was knocked out of him. He widened his eyes, surprised at the animalistic appearance Jared had when he stood over him. "You asked for it," Jared muttered in an amused tone before leaping at him and biting viciously down at the side of his neck for a split second. Tobias stabbed at him again with a second knife, only to get it between his ribs. At that point Jared pulled away and put all of his strength into a single punch aimed for Tobias's temple. Light burst behind Tobias's eyes, and when it faded Jared was gone. Jared had been smart, Tobias realized, because he was running low on blood and therefore would take longer than usual to heal. This would then cause his injuries to stick around longer and thus the humans would not be as suspicious about him being something strange. He turned his head to look over at Hayley, crying out weakly "You okay?" He knew he'd be okay soon enough and he hoped that Jared would send word up ahead that he, Lachlan Alexander, was back.

Hayley was walking through the tall grass, when suddenly a smooth voice spoke right in her ear and stroked her hair. "What the hell?" she turned quickly to see who it was, fearing the worst. Her worst nightmare came true when he gripped her shoulders with a supernatural strength, then slammed her to the ground faster than she could grab a weapon, practically smashing his hand into her shoulder, keeping her pinned to the ground, making her unable to draw a weapon. Would this be the end? Was she going to die, right here and right now? "Let go of me!" she protested as he kept her crushed against the ground, using a fingernail to tear open the flesh in her cheek, causing a small pool of blood to dribble down her face. She winced, not wanting to die like this. She couldn't die like this.

Then, she heard Toby's voice, and he pulled the vampire off of her, a small sense of relief as his weight was lifted from her body. She sat up weakly, her head fuzzy from being thrown to the ground. They were fighting, and Toby stabbed the vampire in the chest, and was thrown to the ground. Then the vampire was gone. She crawled over to toby, seeing a somewhat deep bite mark on his neck. "i.. I'm fine. Are you okay? That looks like a nasty little cut there." she tried to ignore the bruises flaring up on her body, and the stinging cut on her face. Toby was worse off, and she knew it. She tried to sit up, but was too dizzy still, so she lay back down. "We.. We have to get out of here before he comes back.. Can.. Can you stand?" she asked, thanking God that her injuries weren't worse. The force to her head was the only thing keeping her back right now, and it annoyed her. She should be up and ready, ready to shoot the thing in the heart. But her stupid head kept her from even sitting up. How was she going to survive out here? She groaned, shakily sitting up, thankfully staying upright this time.

Her body was shaking, and her heart pounded like a drum in her chest, tears gathering in her eyes. She wiped them away quickly, trying to be strong. But it wasn't easy, not here, not right now. She had almost died the way she had never wanted to die. She looked down slightly at Toby. "Y-you just saved my life... Thank you." She spoke quietly, thankfully. She was so thankful he had come in where he had, or she might not still be here if he hadn't. She knew they had to get moving, and fast now. surely they wouldn't be left alone for long, especially since they were both still bleeding lightly. Thankfully the wounds weren't too bad, and they should be fine. She stayed seated, but this time drew her bow, keeping an arrow drawn, really feeling ready this time. Next time a vampire came into sight, she'd shoot it through the heart.

"Isn't he just an idiot?" Coran watched the scene before him with dull interest, a bit mad that Jared had gone for the kill without waiting for him first. He knew Jared of course, but even Coran knew to steer clear of the guy. Coran was standing further away than the cruel vampire had, his hands shoved in the pockets of his black jeans. "You two have plenty of blood to share, but does he think about us? No, of course not." he clicked his tongue in exasperation, shaking his head slowly. "He never thinks twice, does he? Not that you two would know of course, but I guess I'll just have to finish the job." He was in a chatty mood clearly, in the mood to strike up some terror before he went for the kill. His throat ached for the hot blood, deciding to kill them rather than save some blood for later. He took a deep breath in through his nose, smelling the iron tang of blood that emanated from their minor wounds. He took a hesitant step forward, a regular, human paced step. He knew they were armed...but it didn't worry him. "So lookie here. We've got the maiden, and the idiotic knight in shining armor." He nodded at the two in turn, planning out his attack. "Put down the bow, sweetheart. I'll make it quick. You know, probably." Another slow step forward. His black shoes crunched into the dry grass, his hazel eyes steady and almost friendly. Coran cracked his knuckles. Once they'd had a chance to respond of course, he was interested in how they would respond to his sarcasm. In his eyes, it was always just hilarious watching the humans struggle for a suitable reply before he killed them. They were so weak, so oblivious. Did they really think that they could take down a vampire so easily? An arrow would sting if it didn't hit his heart, but it would heal quickly. He'd be more mad than hurt. Perhaps he would savor the blood of the girl, she was pretty. It was always fun to watch the light die from their eyes. He was not as cruel as Jared, but he enjoyed killing nearly as much. Coran took a few more, delicate steps forward. "Ready to die?"

Hayley was looking around her, keeping a close eye on her surroundings. Then, after a few minutes, another young man appeared, a sarcastic smile on his face. She knew it was a vampire by the words that followed. Put the bow down, sweetheart. Are you ready to die? She shivered, fear tearing through her. She didn't do as he said, and she could see his eyes settling on tobias. She wouldn't let him kill her friend, her best friend, she woudln't let it happen. She let the arrow fly from the string, and it hit the vampire in the arm, not enough to do damage or maybe even slow him down. She sighed, feeling frustrated and completely hopeless. She didn't want to die like this. She just couldn't. "Go ahead and get it over with, will you?" She muttered, glaring up at him, her heart pounding. This day wasn't turning out too good, now was it? She sighed, almost unbelieving that this might be her last few moments alive.

She shivered, dropping the bow to the ground. If her death meant letting Toby escape, then... well, fine. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she watched her friend die in front of her. She just hoped she had bought him enough time. Would this really be the way she was going to die? The blood being sucked from her veins, a slow, painful death, no matter how fast it was done. She was too weak to get up and try to run, and it would be useless to try anyways. Vampires had a supernatural speed that could catch up to a human running at full speed in half a moment, and in her state it would take less time than that to catch up. She just wished he would do it so it was over with.

"Hey, I don't need to be asked twice." Coran smiled wanly. “It doesn’t hurt...much.” He shrugged, walking up to her with a sideways glance at Tobias. “If you think I’m going to fall for something like this, then you might need to think twice.” He whispered in her ear, pointing to Tobias. He kicked the bow away, watching it clatter to a rest a few yards away. He tilted her head to the side, now that she was unarmed he wasn’t wary. Her blood coursed beneath her skin, tantalizingly delicious. He looked Tobias dead in the eyes as he plunged into her throat, not in the right place to kill her, but it wouldn’t exactly be pleasant. Hot blood dripped slowly from the wounds, the iron scent filtering through the plains with terrifying determination. He drank his fill, which was less than a liter. She would not die. He had already killed some random deer a bit back, which honestly tasted like dirt. Human blood was so much more satisfying. He shoved her aside, again, not hard. He didn’t want to waste her blood and kill her. Hayley was a cute little thing, killing her so quickly wouldn’t be an incredible waste. She wouldn’t be unconscious, maybe a bit light headed, but nothing more. Coran brushed off his pants, which had grown bloody from his feed. With cold hazel eyes, he turned to Tobias, his back now to the girl. He didn’t expect her to do anything of course, she would probably be in shock. But he wasn’t going to let Tobias get away. If her plan was to distract him long enough for her friend to escape and get the others, she was sorely mistaken. Coran wouldn’t be fooled by idle trickery. He ran a hand through his hair, looking at 'Tobias.' "Tobias. Toby." He drew out the word. "Not bad, I suppose. Could have done better name-wise." Coran gave him a wink, mouthing the words 'welcome back.'

Hayley shivered when he stood in front of her, crouching down and tilting her head to the side. That's when he plunged his teeth into her neck, and a high pitched scream tore it's way from her mouth. She hated pain, no matter how small, and this hurt like hell. Tears involuntarily fell down her face as he drank her blood. He thought she was unarmed, right? She pulled a stake from her belt before he let her go and stabbed him in the stomach, just before he let her go and pushed her to the ground, now weakened even more greatly and dizzy now, her vision blurring in and out now. "I... I bet that hurt.. just a bit more." She smirked slightly, but was too weak to really make a snide comment right now. She would do anything to keep him from killing Toby. She honestly didn't care about her own safety at the moment. "L-leave him.. alone." She growled, weakly sitting up as her own warm blood ran down her neck too fast, making her lose blood a little too quickly. "J-just... kill me already." She moaned before falling backwards to the ground, not passing out, but too weak to move now. Hopefully that stake would slow him down enough for Tobias to get out of here, or maybe get to Phyllis and Eric, if they were still alive, that is. Tears were running down her face, fear coursing through her. She had never been this scared, or protective, in fact. But these people were the only people left in her life, and she would never let them die if she could help it. She was too stubborn and caring for that.

[ehh so is this, sorry!]

Tobias attempted to move his body as Hayley informed him she was fine, but he was incredibly weak from the injuries Jared had inflicted on him and the fact he was hungry enough to probably kill her if she got too close. She asked if he was okay and he half-shook, half-nodded, muttering "It's just a bite... I'll be fine." He groaned under his breath, trying to push himself up into a partial sitting position. He felt oddly faint and strangely human in that moment--the lack of human blood in his body was weakening his ability to recover and the sluggish sensation he was suffering from was frustrating him greatly. The bite was very deep and if he was a human, he'd probably have bled out. It looked gruesome enough, he was sure, but he was determined not to let anyone take too close of a look at it until he could let it heal a little. Hayley murmured that they needed to leave before Jared came back and asked if he could stand up, to which he just grunted and kept trying to clear his head. She set up near him, looking down at his eyes and thanking him for saving her life. He looked up, unsure what to say. He had so many witty comebacks... if only she knew he was a vampire, they'd be hilarious. Alas, he just offered a simple "You're welcome," and pushed himself into a slight sitting position.

"Isn't he just an idiot?" a familiar condescending voice declared from not too far from them. Tobias's head snapped to the side, locking on that of none other than Coran, the live-in vampire sarcasm king. He had his hands in his pockets, casually locking on at them like they were just actors in a movie he was directing. He made a belittling comment in regard to Jared, but Tobias wasn't paying attention. He just stared Coran straight in the eyes, knowing he'd recognize him. Knowing, just knowing, that Coran would know better than to reveal him. More than anything, he wanted Coran to see and understand that he was weakened and that he needed help--soon. "He never thinks twice, does he? Not that you two would know of course, but I guess I'll just have to finish the job." Coran's voice permeated Tobias's eardrums and he nearly rolled his eyes. Coran was all for theatrics, he always had been, and he was ten times as dramatic as Tobias was about being a vampire. The other vampire hesitantly stepped forward with a human pace, calling Hayley a maiden... and oh-so-kindly slipping in that Tobias was "the idiot knight". The irritated, threatening glare that overtook Tobias's face was hardly an act in that moment. Tobias was torn, unsure what to do. Tell Hayley what to do so they'd survive, or fight for his own team...? Coran's command to Hayley to put down her bow reminded Tobias all at once whose team he was supposed to be playing for, and he shot Hayley a violent look that read "do not put down that bow." He continued to stare at her even after Coran asked "Ready to die?"

Just then, in a moment of brilliance, Hayley shot an arrow at Coran and hit him square in the arm. Tobias flinched, practically feeling the pain, but was proud of the girl. She was fighting to survive and he could respect tha--her next words stopped him straight in his mental tracks. Get it over with? Those were words of weakness, words of surrender. Was she really giving up so easily? She'd just shot Coran, she could keep fighting! "Hayley, what are you do--"

"Hey, I don't need to be asked twice," Coran's sly words interrupted Tobias and he glared once again at the other vampire. No, no, no, this was horrible. He was too weak to do anything, not without feeding, and his body was healing so slowly! Coran advanced on the girl, kicking her bow away, and Tobias struggled to get to his feet... but flopped down from exhaustion. This was the weakest he'd felt in a long time. Tobias was forced to watch as Coran tilted Hayley's neck to the side... and drank from her. Hayley's high-pitched scream filled the air and reverberated inside of Tobias's head. The pain was excruciating and he shoved his face into the ground, his back arching involuntarily. He was frustrated and irritated and angry. Why did Coran have to be so stupid? Why did Jared have to be so stupid? Was everyone just stupid? Tobias was as much good as a human, laying there defenseless and practically comatose. After a few moments the pain faded to faint ringing and Tobias faced them again. Coran met his eyes and Tobias shook his head, his eyes reading "dammit, Coran, help me."

The other vampire shoved Hayley aside just in time for the girl to pull out her emergency stake. Tobias rolled his eyes, not feeling even slightly bad for his supposed friend--it was his own fault for overlooking the weapon. The wood sank deep into Coran's stomach and Tobias found himself suppressing a laugh at Hayley's comeback. "I bet that hurt just a bit more," she murmured with a weak smirk and faint words. But then her next words just screamed of selflessness and weakness, at least in Tobias's eyes, and he nearly growled upon hearing them. Leave him alone? Just kill me already? Words of weakness and words of failure. Tobias glared at Hayley, hoping she'd see the disappointment in his eyes. Giving up wasn't an option. She fell back where she lay and seemed to still be conscious, but was hardly moving. Tobias bit his bottom lip, crawling the last few feet to Coran.

"You n-need to help me," he whispered in a voice quieter than human ears could pick up. His voice shook from fatigue and he bit his tongue to keep from making another pained noise. "I need to get back to the group and get blood, but I need you to make it look like I was captured." He met Coran's eyes, his gaze stern and his blue eyes set. "Can you handle that?" If Hayley was even able to see him from where she was laying, it would just look like Tobias was trying to crawl close enough and muster enough strength to finish Coran off.

"T-toby… What are you doing?" She stammered as he crawled towards the vampire who had almost just taken her life. he didn't seem strong enough to take him, at least, not right now. She could tell he was weak from the wounds the last vampire inflicted upon him, and was wondering what on earth he was doing. "I… i'm sorry. I'm supposed to be strong, but instead i'm weak. I'm so weak, toby, i'm surprised i lasted this long in the army." She muttered, almost too low for anyone to hear, but she was sure he could hear her. She sighed, laying back against the ground, staring at the cloudy sky. What was he doing? he had gotten close enough to the vampire for either him to kill it or the vampire to kill him. "T-toby… Kill him..." She murmured, struggling to keep her eyes open.

She sighed, trying to sit up, but couldn't. So she then tried to crawl towards Toby and Coran, her gun in her hand. "T-toby..." She sighed, and she realized she was still bleeding from her neck. Dang it. She loaded the gun, but ended up just dropping it, her head hitting the ground with a slight thud, her gun hitting the ground as well. She lay less than twelve inches away from toby and coran, too weak to move now. She didn't want it to end like this. She didn't want to be weak, but she was. She was supposed to be strong, supposed to stand up and fight back. But she was too weak and too scared to try and kill him. She shivered. She wanted to shoot that stupid vamp in the head, and kill him.

She knew she should try and get up and get out of here, but she had lost too much blood to stand up straight, let alone run. She wanted so badly to get up and be strong. But she physically couldn't, and she wasn't sure she could even mentally do it. This was her worst nightmare, and she was reliving every moment after her parent's and brother's deaths. She felt tears in her eyes, and she shivered at the horrid memories. She had seen their bodies. their neck's were torn apart and their bodies were drained of blood. She was told that she was lucky their bodies were even found, but she wished they hadn't.
